Liverpool could secure $48m bargain transfer Cristiano Ronaldo loves despite familiar problem

Liverpool could join Bayern Munich in the race for a Serie A star who has admirers including Cristiano Ronaldo as Jürgen Klopp looks to bolster his squad ahead of next season.

With a host of first-team stars leaving the Reds this summer, it is clear that Anfield’s recruitment staff have a major job on their hands as they look to bring in fresh reinforcements following a disappointing season.

Although midfield and the center of defense do seem to be the primary problem areas that require surgery in the coming months, Klopp has already confirmed that the club will not rule out strengthening in a variety of different positions in the transfer window.

Over a month ago, the German boss appeared to be keeping an open mind about what additions would be made this summer, saying: “We cannot make 24 changes [this summer] and say ‘here we go’ — not even 10 — but it is just that we have to make changes — smart changes — and then we go again.”

One player who could well fit the bill for Liverpool is Federico Chiesa of Juventus, with the Italy international potentially set for a move away from Turin and attracting interest from the Reds and Bayern Munich, according to Gazzetta dello Sport (via PaisleyGates).

As per the report, the Euro 2020 victor could be available for as little as $48m (£38m/€44m) this summer, with the Old Lady potentially ready to cut their losses after an injury-hit couple of seasons.

The versatile 25-year-old winger moved to the Allianz Stadium after starring for his country as they won the Euros back in 2020 but has struggled with injury in the past couple of campaigns following a solid first season.

In his debut campaign with the Italian giants, the former Fiorentina star played alongside the aforementioned Ronaldo and gained the admiration of the Portuguese football legend with his displays.

During the campaign in question, the talented attacking ace scored 15 goals in 46 appearances in all competitions, notching 11 assists in the process, while also gaining a spot in the Serie A Team of the Season.

According to football agent Ivan Reggiani, speaking to CalciomercatoTV in late 2021, Ronaldo was among the many people in Italy who ‘appreciated’ Chiesa’s talents during their season together at Juventus.

He said: “Chiesa is the second or third best player as a talent in Italy. Appreciated across the channel, he is heavily sponsored by Cristiano Ronaldo.”

Over the past couple of seasons since then, he has managed 17 goal involvements — seven goals and ten assists — but has also missed over 60 games during that time.

Liverpool.com says: There is no doubting Chiesa’s quality and he would clearly be a great addition to pretty much any side, but concerns will abound about his fitness record.

The Reds have just lost two players who struggled with injuries down the years in Naby Keïta and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, so club chiefs may have concerns about the player’s record in recent years.

Having said that, the chance to sign a player of his ability for such a knockdown price does not come around often and he could prove a shrewd buy if he can put his injury woes behind him.
