Fantasy Premier League: Four of the best captains for GW38

For the final time this season, we’re on hand to offer our Fantasy Premier League advice and offer up four selections for your crucial captaincy.

Is it time for one last roll of the dice? Or are you attempting to maintain your position at the top of a mini-league? Whatever the case, making the right decision in Gameweek 38 is vital.

Ahead of the Premier League’s final day, we look at four of the best captaincy options.

Four of the best captains for Gameweek 38 of Fantasy Premier League.

Erling Haaland v Brentford (A)

Pep Guardiola incurred the wrath of Fantasy Premier League managers in Gameweek 37, after making wholesale changes to his side for the 1-0 win over Chelsea.

Manchester City had £477.3m worth of talent on their bench alone, including FPL perma-captain Erling Haaland who came on as a substitute to earn a single point. The Norwegian could return for his second fixture of GW37 at Brighton, before concluding what has been a record-breaking individual season at Brentford on the final weekend.

The risk of rotation is prominent as Guardiola looks to find balance between rest and momentum, for a City side chasing treble success this season.

Haaland, however, has been an almost permanent choice as captain for many managers this season and for good reason. No player in FPL can better his 267 points to date.

Harry Kane v Leeds (A)

Choosing a captain with something to play for can often be the best strategy in Gameweek 38 and perhaps no fixture has more riding on it than Leeds vs Tottenham.

The former must win to have any chance of survival, while Tottenham must better Aston Villa’s result against Brighton to secure European football.

Leeds’ need to win could open up opportunities for Spurs, who remain excellent on the counter despite their struggles this season. Harry Kane has been exceptional this season with only Erling Haaland having outscored the England captain, who has set a record for the most games scored in (25) in a Premier League season.

Kane has scored 10 goals in his last 11 league appearances and three in five Premier League appearances against Leeds. He earned 11 points in his last meeting with this weekend’s opponents.

A brace for Kane this weekend would see him become just the second player, after Alan Shearer, to score 30+ goals in multiple Premier League seasons.

Mohamed Salah v Southampton (A)

Mohamed Salah will be an interesting option to captain your FPL side this weekend as Liverpool travel to face relegated Southampton.

The Reds are unbeaten in 10 Premier League games and Salah has been central to that upturn in form, with seven goals and four assists across that period.

Since Liverpool’s last league defeat on April 1, only Newcastle’s Callum Wilson (8.88) has a higher xG figure than Salah (7.95).

Salah needs just one goal to make it 20 for the season in the Premier League and he could become the first player in the division’s history to reach 20+ goals and 10+ assists in a season on three occasions, surpassing the record he currently shares with Thierry Henry.

Eberechi Eze v Nottingham Forest (H)

Eberechi Eze will be celebrating this week after the uncapped midfielder was named in Gareth Southgate’s squad for June’s Euro 2024 qualifiers with Malta and North Macedonia.

The 24-year-old has been in excellent form during Crystal Palace’s revival under Roy Hodgson and has scored six goals in nine appearances since the veteran coach returned to Selhurst Park. It’s a marked improvement from the midfielder, who had managed just five in 40 appearances under predecessor Patrick Vieira.

Eberechi Eze has completed more take-ons than any other player in the Premier League this season:

◎ 37 games

◉ 71 take-ons completed

◎ 67 shots

◎ 55 chances created

◎ 10 goals

◎ 4 assists

Eze could be a differential captain choice as Palace host newly-safe Nottingham Forest this weekend. A game without pressure could see the free-spirited Eze thrive and he has three goals and 25 points across his last two home matches.
