Trent Alexander-Arnold has revealed the mood at Liverpool remains low despite their recent upturn in form boosting hopes of European football next season.

Liverpool recorded their fifth consecutive Premier League win on Wednesday, as Mo Salah’s penalty proved enough to beat Fulham 1-0 at Anfield.

The result strengthened Liverpool’s hold on fifth place in the Premier League, which would earn a Europa League spot.

Alexander-Arnold admitted the late season form has not raised the mood after a difficult season, with Liverpool out of title contention and facing the prospect of missing out on Champions League.

The 24-year-old admitted the victory over Fulham was typical of the season, after the Reds were unable to maintain a strong start to the match.

Mo Salah’s penalty gave Liverpool a 1-0 victory over Fulham and a fifth successive league win

‘We won the game and that’s all that matters,’ Alexander-Arnold told the BBC. ‘They are a good side and have performed well this season.

‘We dominated a lot of the first half and they had counter-attacks but then they grew into the second half.

‘It’s becoming a bit of a pattern. We haven’t been able to sustain our good starts. It’s something we probably need to look at.

‘It reflects where we are in the league and what we have to play for left.

‘It’s not where we want to be and that’s as a club as players, staff and fans.

‘We want to be in title races at this stage of the season or in genuine top four races. We’re not in that right now and that might be why the mood is a little low.’

Liverpool have only a faint hope of qualifying for the Champions League after moving to within four points of fourth placed Manchester United.

United still have two games in hand on their rivals, meaning Europa League qualification looks Liverpool’s likeliest prospect.

Alexander-Arnold said the squad want to be the race for the title and the Champions League

Jurgen Klopp’s side are five points clear of sixth placed Tottenham in the race for a Europa League spot.

Liverpool will host Brentford and Aston Villa at Anfield in their final four games.

The Reds also have away trips to relegation threatened Leicester and Southampton.

Klopp explains why Alisson was ‘close to crying’ as Liverpool teammate ‘like a racehorse’ in…

Jurgen Klopp has explained why Alisson was “close to crying” after Liverpool’s 1-0 win over Fulham and likened another one of his Reds stars to a “racehorse”.

Mohamed Salah became the first player to score in eight successive home matches for the club with his penalty enough to secure a 1-0 victory over Fulham, making it five wins in a row and 12 goals in his last 16 games.

He was starting alongside Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz, which at the start of the season was the expected first-choice forward line until the latter sustained a serious knee injury which sidelined him for six months.

As a result, the Fulham game was only the fifth time they had all begun a game together, but it was Nunez’s return to the starting line-up for the first time in half-a-dozen games which produced the key moment in the first half.

Having lost control 30 yards from goal, he set about regaining possession and nicked it back off Issa Diop inside the penalty area only for the defender to bring him down.

Manager Jurgen Klopp felt the spell among the substitutes helped reignite the Uruguay international, who was played through the middle as opposed to his more regular position out on the left in his maiden season.

“Darwin was like a racehorse, really motivated, really on fire,” said Klopp, who was particularly pleased with how the 23-year-old adapted to the vital counter-pressing role through the middle which has been performed so well by fellow new signing Cody Gakpo recently.

“Absolutely. I think for us it’s super-important. You could see in the beginning, defending the centre against Fulham is really important because Palhinha is there and that is their connector.

“We were a bit too early out there from Darwin, we tried to fix that, but he was like a racehorse – go, go, go, go for everybody.

“We opened up and that’s where we struggle slightly. We could sort that and apart from that he played a really good game, he was always a proper option for us and we needed that.”

But with only a slender lead to protect it was goalkeeper Alisson Becker who, not for the first time in this up and down season for the team, came up with the key moments to keep his first clean sheet in six matches with a good save from Carlos Vinicius.

The Brazil international has now made 100 saves in the current campaign, the first time he has reached triple figures in a single season since joining Liverpool.

“Alisson was close to crying with a clean sheet. It’s pretty rare for us this season. It’s very nice, especially for him,” Klopp said.

“He is is for sure the most consistent player we have this season.

“That’s actually not bad news, it’s good news, because if we are not in a great shape and the level of the goalie drops as well then we would have been completely lost. So, that’s fine.”

Reportedly valued at £70m, Mac Allister has been one of the best midfielders in the Premier League this season and a key clog behind Brighton’s incredible rise up the ranks under Roberto De Zerbi, with the 24-year-old also playing an exceptional role for Argentina in their 2022 FIFA World Cup triumph.

With Liverpool targeting central midfield as their main priority for new signings, securing a deal for Mac Allister early could be massive for Jurgen Klopp’s summer plans, with the German manager keen to wrap up business before the start of pre-season in early July.

Although Liverpool need more than Mac Allister, the Brighton man would be a great first addition for the Reds ahead of a massive summer window, and this update from Romano is more than encouraging.

Mac Allister’s rise this season has been nothing short of incredible, with the Brighton star one of the most exciting midfielders in the Premier League and a player who could add plenty of value to many top sides, and Liverpool wrapping up a deal in the coming weeks could be huge.

Indeed, Liverpool know that getting as much business done early will be key if the Reds are to push on for the Premier League title next season, and with Mac Allister one of the best options out there in the market, the Merseyside giants are playing it smart by making an early play for the Argentine.
