Souness picks out one signing Liverpool need to solve issue; claims duo are ‘fighting for their …

Graeme Souness thinks Liverpool “will be fine” but he has explained why they need to sign a midfielder who “continually puts the ball under pressure”.

Liverpool have boosted their hopes of qualifying for Europe with four wins on the bounce in the Premier League.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have been made to work for their victories, though. On Sunday, they gave up a three-goal lead against Spurs but Diogo Jota’s late goal earned them a vital 4-3 win.

The Premier League side are expected to sign several players this summer as Klopp looks to revamp his squad. Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain, Naby Keita and James Milner are all likely to move on when their contracts expire in June.

One of their priorities heading into the summer is to sign two or three new midfielders. Brighton’s Alexis Mac Allister, Chelsea’s Mason Mount and Wolves’ Matheus Nunes are among the players they are looking at.

Liverpool’s current players could be impacted by the arrivals and Souness has warned Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott that they are “fighting for their future”.

“Some of them are fighting for their future at the club,” Souness told Sky Sports.

“The young boys – Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones – they have to show the manager you don’t have to buy expensive midfield players, we’ve already got them here.”

Souness added: “This year they’ve shown they’re not up for the fight on a regular basis, every single week.

“We talk about passion. It’s not a light switch, you can’t turn it off and on. When you play for a big club, you’ve got to be on it all the time. These players this year have shown this has not been the case.”

Souness also thinks Liverpool’s defenders are not “their normal selves” and he has explained why his former club need to sign a midfielder who can play like Georginio Wijnaldum.

“Well, maybe centre back, and depending on whether they persist down the route of trying to push Trent [Alexander-Arnold] in there, but going forward for them they have enough firepower – you don’t have to be playing well to win games if you’ve got goals in your team,” Souness continued.

“I think that back four – with [Joel] Matip – have been fabulous for a number of years but the midfield, if you go back to the start of the season, we were pointing fingers at Liverpool’s back four, and for me, yes, some of them weren’t their normal selves.
