Shut up and behave”–Liverpool should be given points deduction following Klopp outburst, FA told

Liverpool should be given a points deduction in order to help control the behaviour of manager Jurgen Klopp after another outburst at match officials.

The German tactician has been heavily criticised for some of his antics on the touchline, and particularly after he accused Paul Tierney of lying after the 4-3 win over Tottenham.

Ref Support UK CEO Martin Cassidy now believes clubs need to be given points deductions to keep Klopp and others quiet.

“Unless the FA start addressing this behaviour with a points deduction it will never change,” Cassidy said. “Giving Liverpool a £30,000 fine is nothing. Start giving them points deductions and watch them shut up and behave.

Jurgen Klopp doubles down on Liverpool’s ‘history’ with the Premier League official after Spurs win

‘I didn’t lie!’: Jurgen Klopp denies refs chiefs’ claims he was wrong to call out Paul Tierney in his furious outburst and reveals referee’s ‘unacceptable’ remark was about how he planned to send him off

Jurgen Klopp has urged that he ‘didn’t lie’ about Liverpool’s history with Premier League referee Paul Tierney, but admitted his remarks ‘shouldn’t have been said’ following his side’s 4-3 win over Spurs on Sunday.

The Liverpool manager was shown a yellow card by Tierney after wildly celebrating Diogo Jota’s injury time winner at Anfield and subsequently accused the official of having an agenda against his side.

As the Portuguese forward netted deep into added time, Klopp rushed over to celebrate in front of fourth official John Brooks and pulled his hamstring in the process.

The German was still incensed by the officials’ decision to award Tottenham a free kick, which led to Richarlison’s equaliser moments before.

Mail Sport reported on Monday that Klopp is set to be charged by the FA over his furious comments about the referee in his post-match interview.

Jurgen Klopp has urged that he ‘didn’t lie’ about Liverpool’s history with referee Paul Tierney

According to the Reds boss, Tierney told Klopp how he initially planned to send him off rather than issue a yellow card after Liverpool scored their last-gasp winner against Spurs on Sunday

Klopp said in his press conference on Tuesday: ‘I shouldn’t have said what I said but I didn’t lie. It’s not my hands what goes on now.

‘We won the game 4-3 in a spectacular manner and only headlines I created [were negative]. We expect a reaction because everyone tells us something (punishment) will come.

‘I probably have to expect a punishment. Refs think I questioned their integrity which if I am sitting here now calm, I don’t do. The red card versus City was the same spot and player, Mo Salah involved.’

The Reds boss explained that his explosive outburst was brought on by Tierney’s remarks on the touchline.

According to the German’s claims, Tierney told Klopp that he initially planned to send him off rather than issue a yellow card, which subsequently prompted the manager’s post-match tirade.

He continued: ‘The whole situation shouldn’t have happened, a lot of emotion, anger in that moment, that’s why I celebrated why I did.

‘That was the situation, the “no foul” on Mo. Free-kick for Spurs then the goal. Then we score. I should be happy but I was still angry.

‘I couldn’t get close to the fourth official, I felt my muscle. That’s it. Then when Paul Tierney came over to me, I didn’t expect a red. I expected yellow. He said to me: “For me it’s red but because of him (the fourth official), it’s yellow.” I said “red card for what?”

‘I went in, tried to calm down and couldn’t when I spoke to press. Then I said that what he said was ‘not OK’. I thought it wasn’t OK because it wasn’t a red but I opened the box with that. I should’ve just said he said it was a red card. Rest was how I felt at that

Liverpool must wait for double injury return as Jürgen Klopp explains Paul Tierney conversation

Liverpool is awaiting a double injury boost as the season end edges closer, but the Reds will still be without the same players that they were at the weekend for the next game against Fulham.

What’s happened?

Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp has confirmed that Roberto Firmino and Naby Keïta are getting closer to making a return to action after injury but they will not be available for the match with Fulham on Wednesday.

What’s been said?

“No scan [for me]!” Klopp said during his press conference. “Six weeks if I was a player! Bobby (Firmino) is training, but not ready for the (Fulham) game. Pretty much the same for Naby Keïta.”

Klopp was also asked about the incidents and fallout from the match with Spurs at the weekend including the confrontation with referee Paul Tierney.

“The whole situation should not have happened,” Klopp explained. “It was out of anger. That was the situation, the ‘no foul’ on Mo Salah. Free-kick for Spurs then the goal. Then we score. I should be happy but I was still angry.

“Paul Tierney came over to me, I didn’t expect for a second a red card, and he said: ‘For me, it’s a red card but because of him (the fourth official) it’s a yellow’. I opened the box which I didn’t want to open.

“I probably have to expect a punishment. Refs think I questioned their integrity which if I am sitting here now calm, I don’t do.”

What does it mean?

Neither Firmino nor Keïta would have started the match on Wednesday even if they were fit, but with their contracts running down, it will be interesting to see whether either will play again before the end of the campaign.

Firmino would be the likelier to get minutes on the pitch, though his injuries in recent times mean that it is the right call for him to move on at the end of his contract.

Diogo Jota, Klopp said, was ‘struggling’ with a back injury but that was sustained before the win over Tottenham in which he featured, so the Portugal forward cannot be ruled out here.

In terms of the refereeing incidents, hopefully this can draw the line under the situation. Tierney will referee Liverpool again at some point, but that perhaps can wait until next season with so few matches left to play.

Klopp has responded as well as he could to the situation in an attempt to cool things down. Stuart Attwell is the man in the middle at Anfield for the Fulham fixture, and he will be hoping for a quieter evening.
