West Ham United to announce Tim Steidten as director of football on Friday
West Ham United are set to announce the appointment of Tim Steidten as their new director of football on Friday, according to journalist Dominik Schneider.

The Hammers had been keen to appoint someone to help with transfers this summer after being left disappointed by the performances of players after splashing £185m last season on new players.

But after an extensive process and talks with several candidates, German Steidten has now been handed the role and is set to start work on July 1st.

“Tim Steidten becomes new Director of Football at West Ham,” he wrote on his personal Twitter account (27 June).

“He starts with the Hammers on July 1. Official announcement will be made on Friday.”

Paris Saint-Germain interested in signing 25-year-old West Ham midfielder

Paris Saint-Germain have reportedly set their sights on acquiring the services of Lucas Paqueta.

That’s according to a recent report from 90min, who claim the French giants, who are known for their ambitious transfer strategies, are keen on bolstering their squad ahead of next season.

Paqueta, 25, has been in impressive form for West Ham, showcasing his technical ability, vision, and versatility in midfield.

However, West Ham will likely be reluctant to part ways with their prized asset. The Brazilian playmaker has quickly become a vital cog in the team’s midfield, playing a pivotal role in their recent success, including providing the assist for Jarrod Bowen’s Europa League Conference goal earlier this month.

Fabrizio Romano claims West Ham could sign Denis Zakaria after his Chelsea exit

West Ham United reportedly could sign Denis Zakaria after he left Chelsea to return to his parent club Juventus.

According to Fabrizio Romano, West Ham are one of the clubs who are keen to prise Denis Zakaria away from Juventus in the summer transfer window.

Juventus are allegedly demanding around £30 million for Zakaria (The Daily Mail).

Zakaria is a defensive midfielder by trade but crucially as far as West Ham are concerned, he can play in the centre-back position as as well.

The Swiss international is incredibly dynamic and energetic. He is a tenacious tackler and has the kind of physicality needed to succeed in the Premier League.

If he was given a regular run of games by David Moyes at the London Stadium, I’m certain that he would prove his true worth.

Former BSC Young Boys coach Uli Forte told Mondo Napoli in July 2021:

“He is an incredible box-to-box [player]. He has exceptional technique and grinds kilometres. All his characteristics were appreciated from a very young age, and he made his debut at the age of 18. He has offers from England, he has the right characteristics for the Premier. He will become a devastating player. Zakaria is a champion and has characteristics more or less similar to [Napoli midfielder Diego] Demme. Quantity, but a lot of quality.”

His struggles with Chelsea were well documented, but I believe he just needs to play regular football in order for everyone to see just how good he is.

And if West Ham sign Denis Zakaria this summer, I believe he would be a very good addition to Moyes’s ranks at the London Stadium.

West Ham United transfer news as Atletico Madrid midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia wanted

West Ham United are pushing to sign Atletico Madrid midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia with the two clubs currently negotiating a potential deal, according to journalist Aaron Dominguez.

With West Ham resigned to losing their star man Declan Rice this summer, the Irons have been linked with a number of potential replacements including Edson Alvarez, Joao Palhinha and Kalvin Phillips.

And Atletico Madrid midfield destroyer Kondogbia has now emerged as the latest name in the frame to replace the England international, having played a bit-part role for Diego Simeone’s side.

According to Spanish journalist Dominguez [22 June], the Central African Republic ace is also attracting interest from Besiktas and Lyon but West Ham United are said to be in talks with the Spanish giants for his signature.

Taking to his personal Twitter account, he wrote: “West Ham have been pushing hard in the last few hours to sign Kondogbia.

“Already negotiating with Atlético de Madrid. He also has offers from Besiktas and Lyon.”

Decent option

While the likes of Alvarez, Palhinha and Phillips represent attractive and quality names to replace Rice this summer, there are no guarantees West Ham United would be able to acquire them.

Certainly, with Rice set to leave for big money soon, the Hammers will be expected to splash the cash to rejuvenate the squad after his departure and while that may seem exciting for fans across East London, it’s important the club do not pay over the odds for potential targets.

The Irons should have alternative targets lined up and Kondogbia represents a decent and sensible option to target. He may not be one of the more acclaimed defensive midfielders in Europe, but his experience on the continent, making 397 appearances for the likes of Inter Milan, Monaco Sevilla, Valencia and Atletico Madrid, and his destructive presence in midfield shouldn’t be discounted.

Who Scored also takes into account that Kondogbia was strong in the tackle in La Liga and successfully won around 1.9 challenges per match for his side in the Spanish top-flight.

According to FB Ref, the Nemours-born midfielder excelled in comparison to his positional peers across Europe’s top five divisions concerning interceptions, nipping in to steal the ball 2.41 times per 90 minutes across the last 365 days, putting him in the first percentile for this metric.

Should West Ham United fail to acquire any of their top midfield targets, Kondogbia definitely represents a sensible acquisition.
