BLOOD RED: PLAYER RATINGS | LIVERPOOL 1-1 ASTON VILLA

Hello and welcome to the ECHO’s dedicated Liverpool news and transfers blog on Tuesday, May 23.

Liverpool still have a mountain to climb in their unlikely pursuit for Champions League qualification, and it looks as though they will have to settle for a place in the Europa League instead next season. Newcastle booked their place in the marquee European competition with a draw against Leicester City on Monday night.

As attentions turn to the summer window, the Reds are hoping to sign Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton as Jurgen Klopp considers further options. Mason Mount and Ryan Gravenberch are among them, after the club’s initial plans to target Jude Bellingham were shelved.

Elsewhere, there are suggestions Liverpool could swoop for Harvey Barnes and James Maddison in cut-price deals from Leicester City if they are relegated. Crystal Palace duo Marc Guehi and Eberechi Eze are also doing the rounds right now, while Eze has broken silence on such rumours.

Neil Critchley makes Blackpool return

The former Liverpool U23s manager left the then Championship outfit last summer to become Steven Gerrard’s assistant at Aston Villa. However, Gerrard was sacked in October 2022

Firmino thanks team-mates for celebration during Anfield party

Roberto Firmino has thanked his Liverpool team-mates for the “unforgettable” send-off he was awarded during an end-of-season celebration at Anfield on Sunday.

The Brazilian is one of four players who will leave the club at the end of June once their contracts expire, with James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita also drawing the curtain on their careers on Merseyside.

And to celebrate the Liverpool careers of the soon-to-be departees, who have won every top-level honour since making their respective moves to Merseyside, the Reds hosted a farewell reception at Anfield on Sunday afternoon less than 24 hours after Firmino marked his final appearance on home soil with a last-gasp equaliser against Aston Villa in the Premier League.

Reds linked with Wolfsburg defender

Liverpool could make a summer swoop for Wolfsburg defender Micky van de Ven, according to a new report.

The i claim soon-to-be sporting director Jorg Schmadtke could look to lure the defender from his former club to Anfield this summer as he prepares to help Jurgen Klopp revamp his Liverpool side. The 59-year-old is, the ECHO understands, due to fly to England this week to iron out the final details of a three-month contract at Anfield, where he will be tasked with succeeding the outgoing Julian Ward.

And due to his previous ties at Wolfsburg, where he served as the sporting director before leaving in February, the Reds could make a move for Van de Ven this summer.

The report in the i, adds: “The 22-year-old centre-back is one of the division’s most sought-after defenders and sources close to the player have indicated that Liverpool are one of the clubs who have been tracking him”.
