Liverpool’s attempt to sign André from Fluminense last year is still a subject at Fluminense.
As club president Mario Bittencourt this week spoke to the local media, he detailed what happened around the midfielder, as they held him until the end of the Copa Libertadores campaign.
Quoted by Globo Esporte, the club chief claims it was all worth it, as they won the title. And he even gave some details of how much Liverpool had put on the table.
“We had an offer for André of €30m from Liverpool and we said ‘no’ because we had agreed with the player that we wouldn’t sell him because we wanted to win the Libertadores. Since then, we’ve had a second offer, from an English club, for well under €30m, which we turned down because we felt it was below what Fluminense expects for the player,” said Bittencourt.
“The situation doesn’t worry us because the relationship with André and Carlos Leite (the player’s manager) is very good. They both agreed to stay and both understood that he has to go somewhere he wants to go.”
The important thing is that Fluminense are fully prepared to sell André now, with Globo Esporte featuring a story saying the club have 24 hours to do so.
They expect the midfielder to be their biggest sale in history, and consider a good offer to be over €35m. The problem is that since that hasn’t arrived at their table yet, they’re starting to think no European club would spend that in the middle of the season.
We shall now see if Liverpool will show up with a few million more, although we wouldn’t rule out that the same summer offer would be accepted this time.

Xabi Alonso has already named next Liverpool manager after Jurgen Klopp
The next Liverpool manager could be one of the Reds’ 2005 Champions League-winning midfielders – but while Xabi Alonso remains the hot favourite, the Spaniard has already tipped one of his former Anfield team-mates to succeed Jurgen Klopp.
Nicknamed the ‘midfield maestro’ during his time on Merseyside, Alonso was one of Rafa Benitez’s first singings in 2004 and went on to become a hugely popular player with the club’s supporters thanks to his passing range, cool presence and eye for the spectacular.
After leaving the Reds as a Champions League winner in 2009 he went on to greater success with both Real Madrid and Bayern Munich before transitioning into football management. A promotion to Spain’s Seguna Division with as coach of Real Sociedad B put him in the spotlight and earned him a higher-profile move to Bayer Leverkusen where he guided the team out of the Bundesliga relegation zone and on to a sixth-place finish, qualifying for the Europa League.

This season has seen even greater progress with Leverkusen sitting at top of the German top flight and currently unbeaten. Alonso’s rapid rise and strong Anfield ties have positioned him as a natural choice to replace Klopp when the Kop boss finally calls him on his managerial tenure at the end of the season, particularly among ECHO readers. But when previously asked who could possibly replace the German in the Anfield hot seat, it was Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard who Alonso tipped for the role – though the Spaniard also admitted that he would love to take the job himself.
Speaking to journalist Guillem Balague in January 2018 (as per the Express), Alonso said: “Yes for sure, I have dreamt of that, but first I have to prove myself and prepare. If I decide somewhere along the way to take my chances as a manager, my link, my commitment, my passion with Liverpool is there. Why not? We will see if we can cross paths in our ways.”
At the time of the interview Gerrard was still U18s manager at Liverpool, which may have influenced Alonso’s belief that his former midfield partner would become the Reds’ manager “… sooner rather than later”. Alonso said: “I think that Stevie will go earlier than me for sure, it’s the natural way. Stevie is already there so it’s going to be sooner rather than later I guess.”

Since then, Gerrard enhanced his reputation by winning the Scottish Premier League title with Rangers, but after moving back to England to manage Aston Villa he was eventually sacked following a poor run of results and is now plying his trade in the Saudi Pro-League with Al-Ettifaq, recently signing a new long-term contract.
But while Gerrard’s managerial stock has taken a dip since its peak at Rangers, Alonso appears to be heading in the opposite direction. Should the Basque 42-year-old send a shockwave through German football by clinching the Bundesliga title with Leverkusen this year against all the odds, he will surely be among the favourites for a shot at one of the biggest jobs in world football once Klopp’s long goodbye comes to pass.

Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones On Bill Belichick: ‘There’s No Doubt In My Mind I Could Work With Him’ In Shocking Admission

The Dallas Cowboys are sticking with Mike McCarthy as their head coach for 2024, but his future isn’t guaranteed beyond next year.
Jones recently declined to extend his head coach, but praised McCarthy’s role in the Cowboys’ offense that led the league in scoring and ranked fifth in yardage. Dak Prescott was named to the All-Pro second team, as he led the league in touchdowns (36) and ranked second in passer rating, his 105.9 the best mark in his eight years as a pro.
“His work with Dak, his work in the offense was really good,” Jones said of McCarthy. “I feel and he feels, we all feel, that there’s notable more to do improving with Dak.
“Best way to get the meat that’s on the bone is continuity.”

But the Dallas Cowboys owner has been linked to Bill Belicick, who appears will be out of coaching in the NFL in 2024. If McCarthy doesn’t get Dallas over the hump next season, the 6-time Super Bowl winning coach could be next in line.
According to a recent piece by Jori Epstein of Yahoo, Jerry Jones seemed well aware of the narratives that his desire for power and control could conflict with the vast personnel control Belichick seeks, a level of control that, Yahoo Sports’ Charles Robinson reported, derailed his candidacy for the Atlanta Falcons’ head-coaching role.
None of six other teams interviewed Belichick for their openings this cycle. Four jobs have been filled, while the Washington Commanders and Seattle Seahawks’ top spots remain open.
Collaborative coaches who work with, rather than above, personnel staff have dominated this cycle’s hirings. Multiple front-office executives told Yahoo Sports on Tuesday at Senior Bowl practices that front offices will only continue to expand across the league as the potential for integrating analytics and technology explodes.

Less than two weeks after Jones issued a statement indicating that Mike McCarthy will return for a fifth season after an embarrassing first-round exit from the playoffs, Jones spoke openly about the prospect of eventually employing Belichick.

With McCarthy seemingly on the hot seat for 2024 — and a feeling like noting short of a trip to the NFC Championship will secure his job — Epstein got the Cowboys owner to open up about Belichick possibly coming to Dallas.
But as he considered the state of his team from the Cowboys’ designated suite overlooking Senior Bowl practices on Tuesday, Jones eventually connected the dots.
The question on which he ultimately changed his tune was not about Belichick’s candidacy nor his compatibility with the Cowboys.
Yahoo Sports asked Jones what he respected generally about Belichick. Jones’ response quickly veered away from Belichick’s merits.
“I know him personally and I like him,” Jones said. “There’s no doubt in my mind we could work together. None. None.”
As previously noted, Bill Belichick has repeatedly praised Jerry and Stephen Jones for the organization they’ve built and the talent they amassed with the Dallas Cowboys. And Belichick continues to be available to anyone who wishes to hire him.

Jerry Jones knows that hiring Belichick wouldn’t guarantee a Super Bowl win. But Jones also knows he could do a lot worse than the coach who has won six of them.
“We all know that he’s certainly excellent, maybe at the top of his profession,” Jones said. “To say that any one person automatically assures you a Super Bowl is ridiculous. That’s too high [an] expectation for him. But is he maybe the greatest pro football coach of all time? Could very well be.
“He is a friend and I like him and I want to make real clear: I wouldn’t have any problem working with him.”
Ezoic
It certainly sounds like Jerry Jones is keeping the door open for Bill Belichick to coach the Dallas Cowboys if things go south with McCarthy next season.

Ben Jacobs has shared what Bayer Leverkusen’s CEO ‘told’ him regarding the club’s stance on Xabi Alonso amid the 42-year-old being touted as the potential successor to Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.
Fabrizio Romano has indicated that the Spaniard is a strong ‘candidate’ to be the Reds’ next manager, while German outlet SportBild claimed (via FourFourTwo) that the 2010 World Cup winner has a clause in his contract which’d allow him to leave for any of the three major European clubs for whom he played – LFC, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich.
In conversations with BayArena chief Fernando Carro, Jacobs outlined that no such stipulation exists, although it was claimed that the Bundesliga leaders wouldn’t stand in Alonso’s way if he did wish to move on.
The journalist wrote for GIVEMESPORT: “Former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso will be a leading contender. Alonso has done a fantastic job at Bayern Leverkusen, who are currently top of the Bundesliga.
“Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro told me back in November that there is no formal clause allowing Alonso to leave for Liverpool, or any of his other old clubs, but he added no one at Leverkusen will force him to stay if he does want a new challenge.”

Few managers in world football currently have a higher stock than Alonso, who in little more than a year has taken Leverkusen from second bottom of the Bundesliga to the very top, masterminding a genuine challenge for their first-ever league title this season.
They’re still unbeaten in the German top flight in 2023/24 and have dropped just eight points out of 57 available, putting them in with a firm chance of being the first team other than Bayern Munich to win the division since 2012.
Barring an inexplicable collapse or major in-house fallout, the 42-year-old looks set to be given the freedom to end his time at the BayArena on his own terms, even though anyone associated with the club must surely be praying that he stays put for the foreseeable future.
Carro’s apparent assertion that Leverkusen wouldn’t try to block Alonso from leaving if he wishes to do so may offer encouragement from Liverpool if, as expected, Anfield chiefs pursue the former Reds midfielder to take over from Klopp.
On current form, the Spaniard is bound to have his pick of jobs whenever he moves on from the Bundesliga pace-setters. Let’s hope it’s LFC who can make the most convincing case to acquire his services when that time comes.
