Man City in panic mode as Guardiola’s old nemesis plans swoop for vital player as contract talks stall

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez wants to sign Man City star Rodri
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez wants to sign Man City star Rodri

Rodri has undoubtedly been one of Manchester City’s most important players in recent years but a shock report suggests he could be on the move.

Pep Guardiola values the Spanish international extremely highly and has been doing everything in his power to tie him down to a new contract, but has so far been unsuccessful.

Rodri‘s current deal is valid until 2027 but it’s thought that some of Europe’s biggest sides could test the Cityzen’s resolve with a big summer offer.

According to journalist Joan Fontes, Man City sporting director Txiki Begiristain has informed people close to him that Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has ‘set his sights’ on signing Rodri.

The LaLiga giants’ interest in Rodri emerges only a week after they were knocked out of the Champions League by Carlo Ancelotti’s side.

Of course, Guardiola also had many battles with them when he was Barcelona boss – so he certainly won’t make a deal easy for a multitude of reasons.

Real Madrid already have an array of midfield talent at their disposal, with the likes of Jude Bellingham, Eduardo Camavinga, Federico Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni in their ranks.

However, with veteran duo Toni Kroos and Luka Modric set to leave at the end of the season, signing another world-class centre-mid like Rodri certainly wouldn’t go amiss.

Real Madrid planning big move for Rodri
Fontes’ report states that Real Madrid are aiming to bring in Rodri this summer or next as they look to ‘take their midfield to the next level.’

Man City signed the 27-year-old for £62.5m from Real’s local rivals Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2019.

Rodri has gone on to make 250 appearances so far for Guardiola’s team, scoring 25 goals and winning a staggering 10 major trophies in just five years.

He is a key component of the Man City side that has dominated English and European football and is arguably the best defensive midfielder in the world.

Rodri makes an average of 2 tackles and 0.7 interceptions per game but is also superb with the ball at his feet, with a pass success rate of 92.1%.

With that in mind, it’s no surprise to see Real Madrid chasing Rodri’s signature, but luring him away from the Etihad will be very difficult.

Reports suggest that Man City value the Spaniard in excess of £110m, so it will be interesting to see how high Real are willing to go with an offer for him.

Meanwhile, the Cityzens continue to try and convince Rodri to put pen to paper on a new big-money contract to secure his long-term future in Manchester.

‘A very top player’… Manchester City told they are sitting on a serious talent in their EDS

Manchester City are known for having one of the best academies in the world – and it looks as though it is playing host to yet another gem with a huge future.

City have splashed a lot of money on established stars over the years, and fans have been royally treated to watching some absolutely amazing players for the first-team.

But the club have also invested a lot of money in the academy.

The infrastructure has been in place for a while now, and the club have managed to build a really exciting Elite Development Squad.

There are a plethora of exciting young talents on the books at the moment, and fans may well be seeing some of them in the first-team in the coming years.

One youngster who is probably still quite far off making the first-team is Divine Mukasa – but he is very much a name to look out for…

Isaiah Dada-Mascoll says Manchester City have signed a serious talent in Divine Mukasa

Manchester City completed the signing of Divine Mukasa back in September 2023, after he came through West Ham United’s academy.

He is described by the club as ‘player that thrives in tight spaces and well capable of scoring and assisting goals’, and someone who ‘adds an extra level of creativity to every side he plays in’.

Mukasa is still only 16 years old, but he has gone straight in with the U18s.

It has been a relatively successful stint for far for Mukasa – who is already an England U17 international. He’s made 19 appearances across all competitions for the U18s, scoring two goals and making five assists.

Mukasa’s solid start has earned him praise from fellow teammate Isaiah Dada-Mascoll, who believes the club may well have signed a top young talent. He said (via mancity.com): “It’s been good getting to gel with new players too. Divine Mukasa has just been signed and I think he’s a very top player.

“I’ve been working alongside him in training and been able to understand more of his game, how I can like feed him the ball for example, and so that’s been a good relationship that I’ve gained.”

Remember the name

The early signs over Mukasa are very good, and City will be confident of developing him into a great player.

The EDS has really borne fruit in recent years. If players do not make City’s first-team, like Phil Foden, Rico Lewis, Oscar Bobb and Cole Palmer before he was sold, then there tends to be a good chance of them making the club some good money.

We will see in time which way it goes for Mukasa, but he certainly sounds like someone we should be watching out for.

Manchester United are facing a defensive nightmare ahead of Sunday’s Premier League meeting with Liverpool after losing both Jonny Evans and Raphael Varane to injury during their 4-3 defeat at Chelsea on Thursday evening.

Varane was withdrawn at the end of the first half and replaced by Evans, who himself was replaced 20 minutes later after picking up a knock. The Red Devils are currently without Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof in this position, both of whom are sidelined for another month, ensuring Erik ten Hag has only two fit centre-backs to call upon at present.

Harry Maguire and academy prospect Willy Kambwala represent Ten Hag’s only options in this department, offering Liverpool a real incentive to deploy an attacking game plan at Old Trafford this weekend. Speaking after Thursday’s chaotic loss at Chelsea, Ten Hag offered updates on Evans and Varane by admitting he was unsure of the severity of their respective setbacks.

“That doesn’t help. They know how to deal [with pressure] and how to bring the win over the line I can’t tell now what it is in prospect of Sunday but we have to take them both off.”

Pressed specifically on whether Varane will be fit for the visit of Liverpool, Ten Hag added: “In this moment, I don’t know. I can’t help.”

Anthony Martial has not featured since December and is still recovering from groin surgery, while Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia are also sidelined.

FOOTBALLLiverpool are pushing to close a deal for Sporting manager Ruben Amorim before the end of the seasonby Ben Moore5 April 2024

Liverpool are pushing to close the deal for the appointment of Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim before the end of the season, according to Portuguese journalist Pedro Sepulveda.

The 39-year-old has just dropped a huge hint regarding his future, telling reporters that he cannot guarantee that he will stay at Sporting going forward.

Having missed out on Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso, Liverpool shifted attention to Amorim and other candidates, and he is now set to agree a deal to join them from the look of things.

A move for Brighton & Hove Albion manager Roberto De Zerbi was also mooted as he scored well on their initial data research, but Liverpool had reservations due to his outspoken nature and confrontational approach to player recruitment.

Amorim has impressed since becoming Sporting manager in 2020, and while the Anfield gig is a much bigger job, he will fancy his chances of getting it right should he join the Merseyside club.

He won the Primeira Liga at the end of his debut campaign and has since landed two Portuguese League Cups and one Portuguese Super Cup, so Liverpool are hiring a proven winner should they decide to go after him as the replacement for Jurgen Klopp.

The former Braga manager has more than enough experience despite his age, an
