Manchester City drew 3-3 in a Champions League thriller with Real Madrid full of quality from two of the world’s most talented teams. Bernardo Silva caught Andriy Lunin out with a free-kick in the second minute, but two deflected strikes sent the Bernabeu into raptures thanks to Eduardo Camavinga and Rodrygo in the first half. Then a pair of incredible strikes from Phil Foden and Josko Gvardiol stunned the hosts before Federico Valverde similarly hit back with another fabulous volley to set up a blockbuster return fixture at the Etihad. Here, Express Sport runs the rule over the biggest talking points, including a taunting celebration.

Phil Foden ends Jude Bellingham debate
Both Foden and Jude Bellingham were handed central roles with plenty of freedom, as the duo staked their claim to Gareth Southgate as to who should be given an advanced role for England at Euro 2024.
Bellingham had seemingly won the Three Lions boss over, as Declan Rice and another midfielder have been used most recently in the build-up to the tournament, but Foden’s recent form and tonight’s display are impossible to ignore.
Fortunately for Southgate, Bellingham has also excelled in a deeper role at Borussia Dortmund and may have to sacrifice some attacking elements of his game to accommodate Foden, with the City star’s wondergoal clear evidence of the magic Foden is able to produce.

Pep Guardiola handed new dilemma
Once again Foden has shown that he thrives in a central role, this time afforded to him through the absence of Kevin De Bruyne. The Belgian missed out through illness but likely would have forced the England star out wide to accommodate his ability as a number 10 if available.
But Guardiola cannot keep turning Foden away and the time has arrived for he and De Bruyne to play through the middle together. The boss has experimented with two attacking options alongside Rodri recently against Crystal Palace and although the Premier League run-in won’t be seen as the time to tinker, both players in their preferred roles could elevate City to an even higher level.

Jude Bellingham shows bite in Ruben Dias duel
Bellingham can perhaps feel fortunate that he is not suspended for the second leg at the Etihad, after biting back in his battle with City centre-back Ruben Dias.
The Portuguese defender had crunched Bellingham in a bruising tackle on the half way line in the first half, leaving the 20-year-old in a heap on the floor, but Bellingham was quick to get his revenge.
A few minutes later, Dias passed the ball onto Manuel Akanji and with the ball heading towards its intended target, Bellingham came through the back of Dias, likely with the intention of letting the defender know he cannot be bossed around.
However, as one of four Madrid players who were a yellow card away from missing the second leg, Bellingham is fortunate that his elbow into Dias was not deemed an offence worthy of a caution.

Crafty Bernardo Silva
Without De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva stepped up as City’s conductor and with just 109 seconds played, the Portuguese midfielder gave Lunin the eyes and embarrassed Madrid’s goalkeeper.
The Ukrainian stopper had placed just Vinicius Jr in the wall after Jack Grealish earned the visitors a free-kick 25 yards out. Lunin had expected Silva, not on the ideal side for a left-footer, to lift the ball into the box for a cross.
But Silva had another idea and cheekily bent his free-kick around Vinicius and Lunin was unable to react to the quick-thinking in time, helpless to prevent an opening goal and a nightmare start for the La Liga leaders.
City taunted by Rodrygo
Despite being 39 and playing his football in Saudi Arabia, Manchester United legend Cristiano Ronaldo was able to haunt City once more, this time through Rodrygo.
City supporters will have watched on as the Portuguese forward transformed into one of the football’s greatest at Old Trafford, inspiring a new generation, including the man who grabbed Madrid’s second goal.
Rodrygo burst through before his deflected effort rolled past Stefan Ortega, before he busted out Ronaldo’s iconic ‘Siu’ celebration, rubbing his goal in City’s nose by taunting them through one of their rivals’ favourite sons.

Kyle Walker sorely missed
Kyle Walker has so often been Guardiola’s foil against the world’s top forwards. As often as City dazzle in possession, defence wins Champions Leagues and Walker has been key against the likes of Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr, Ronaldo and Lionel Messi before them.
Without Walker’s pace, City struggled to keep as high a line as they would like, while his ability to defend one-on-one was sorely missed.
As capable a defender as Akanji is, Madrid were able to find joy down his flank and the right-back was unable to fill the boots of Walker. City will be desperate for the England defender to return in time for the second leg.

MADRID (AP) — Manchester City playmaker Kevin de Bruyne was ill and was not included in Pep Guardiola’s starting lineup against Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal on Tuesday.
Guardiola told TNT that De Bruyne started to vomit in the locker room after the team arrived for the match at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.
The Belgium international did warm up with his teammates before the match and started on the bench for the defending champions.

We have to punish them – Pep Guardiola calls on Man City to ‘hurt’ Real Madrid
Press conference with Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola ahead of his side’s Champions League quarter final against Real Madrid. City knocked Madrid out in the semi-finals last year on their way to winning the trophy for the first time.
De Bruyne was replaced in the lineup by former Madrid player Mateo Kovacic.
De Bruyne scored twice in City’s 4-2 win over Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday and provided an assist on Erling Halaand’s goal.
De Bruyne’s double took him to 100 goals for the club since joining from Wolfsburg in 2015.

Rodrygo and Vinicius Jr of Real Madrid and Kevin de Bruyne of Man City split
Getty Images
Real Madrid and Manchester City meet in the Champions League knockout stage for the third straight season as Los Blancos will host Pep Guardiola’s gang at the Bernabeu on Tuesday.
The two sides have split the last two meetings, and on both occasions, the winner would go on to lift the trophy. In 2022, Real Madrid turned around a 4-3 first leg deficit with a 3-1 win at home in the second leg to reach the semifinals. The following year, Man City clobbered Real Madrid 4-0 at home in the second leg to book a place in the final.
Oddly, while the two clubs both enter sporting lengthy unbeaten runs, neither side comes into this matchup in particularly lights-out form.

Real Madrid have not lost to anyone not named Atletico Madrid all year, but they’ve played to four draws since the start of February, including three of them at home. Meanwhile, Man City haven’t been beaten in any competition in 2024, but they face a deficit in the Premier League title race as Erling Haaland is struggling through a goal slump.

Real Madrid vs Man City odds
As defending treble winners, Manchester City are slight favourites on the road at the Bernabeu here, but in truth, it’s a tough one to call, and the betting market reflects that, with both sides given plus moneyline odds to emerge victorious.
Goals are expected as well, but not too many — the poor goal scoring form of Erling Haaland plus the hit-or-miss Real Madrid attack has the market a bit muted
