Manchester City will be looking to become the 23rd team to win the Champions League when they face Italian giants Inter Milan tonight.
Pep Guardiola’s side booked their place in Istanbul after thrashing Real Madrid 5-1 on aggregate in the semi-finals. Simone Inzaghi’s Inter Milan defeated rivals AC Milan 3-0 on aggregate in the other semi-final.
The English outfit will be looking to complete an historic Treble and secure their first Champions League trophy tonight while Milan are in search of their fourth title.
The competition is seen as the biggest prize in club football. It was first recognised as the European Cup until the 1992/93 when it was rebranded the Champions League. Since the first edition back in 1956, 22 teams have got their hands on the coveted trophy.

Real Madrid are the most successful team in the competition, with 14 titles. Los Blancos’ first win came in 1956 when they defeated French side Reims 4-3.
The Spanish giants would then go on to win the competition four times in a row until Portuguese side Benfica defeated Barcelona 3-2 in 1961.
AC Milan are the second most successful team in Europe, with seven titles. Their first came in 1963 when they defeated Benfica 2-1. Milan’s last European title came in 2007 after beating Liverpool 2-1.
Liverpool are the most successful English club in the Champions League having won the competition six times in their history. German side Bayern Munich also have six titles to their name.
Chelsea were the last English side to win the trophy after they defeated Manchester City 1-0 back in 2021.
The win over City was the Blues’ second-ever title after they first won the competition back in 2012 against Bayern Munich.
Both Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa have also tasted victory on the biggest stage. Forest have won the final two times, while Villa’s only win came in 1982 against Munich.
