When does the 2023/24 Europa League start? Liverpool find out true value of prize money

Liverpool will not be competing in the Champions League next season after missing out on the top four

The UEFA Europa League trophy is seen on a plinth
There will be no place for Liverpool in next season’s Champions League.

Jurgen Klopp’s side, despite rallying to turnaround their form in recent weeks, have fallen short of the top four places in what has been a disappointing campaign. Manchester City, Arsenal, Manchester United and Newcastle have instead made the cut, with the Reds dropping down into the Europa League.

Not since 2015/16 have Liverpool participated in the second-tier competition of European club football and will be looking to make more memories to those witnessed during Klopp’s first campaign in charge.

Upon the conclusion of Sunday’s final Premier League clash at Southampton, the Reds’ attention will soon shift to what’s to come in 2023/24. With that in mind, here is all you need to know regarding Liverpool’s upcoming European adventure.

When does the 2023/24 Europa League start?
The competition will commence on Thursday September 21, with qualifying rounds taking place before this between August 10 and August 31. Liverpool’s final group stage game will be played on December 14. Should the Reds finish top of their group, they will progress straight to the Round of 16, avoiding the Round of 32 as a result.

When is the group stage draw for the 2023/24 Europa League?
Liverpool will learn which other sides they will be going up against during the group stages once the draw is made on September 1. If Klopp’s men are to progress deep into the competition, listed below are the relevant draw dates which will need to be added to the diary.

Round of 32 draw date – December 18th, 2024

Round of 16 draw date – February 23rd, 2024

Quarter-finals and semi-finals draw date – March 15, 2024.

Where and when is the 2023/24 Europa League final?
The showpiece fixture will be played in the capital of the Republic of Ireland, Dublin, at the Aviva Stadium. This fixture will be contested on May 22nd 2024, which falls on a Wednesday night. The ground itself has a capacity of 51, 711 and previously hosted the 2011 all-Portuguese final between Braga and FC Porto, the latter prevailing 1-0 winners courtesy of a Radamel Falcao goal.

What is the prize money for winning the Europa League?
For Liverpool, a fifth-placed finish and a run to the Europa League final could be worth more than £50m when factoring in best-case scenarios and including matchday revenues that would arrive for each home game. It is a figure that would be boosted by the Reds’ healthy UEFA 10-year coefficient, where they sit 10th.

Liverpool will likely be the highest-rated team coefficient, meaning that they could receive as much as £3.7m of the TV market pool. Starting fees for the Europa League are around £3.2m for clubs in the group stage.
