What West Ham fans sang to Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez at Anfield was downright incredible

The traveling 6,000 West Ham United fans were in typically good humoured spirits up at Anfield for our clash with Liverpool last night, and what they sang to Darwin Nunez was absolutely brilliant.

We were thrashed 5-1 by Liverpool at Anfield in the Carabao Cup quarter-final clash last night, but the West Ham fans still found time for a bit of humour, with a light-hearted dig at Darwin Nunez.

Hammers boss David Moyes fielded a weakened team, so it was no surprise that Liverpool ripped us apart, although the goal-shy Nunez still couldn’t find the back of the net.

Interestingly enough, West Ham tried to sign the 23-year-old Uruguayan before he eventually moved to Anfield in the summer of 2022 for around ÂŁ85 million (Sky Sports).

Nunez has frustrated the Liverpool fans more than he’s thrilled them so far during his time on Merseyside, with 22 goals in 67 games to his name (Transfermarkt) – not the return you’d expect from an £85 million striker!

That’s now 11 games in a row that he has failed to score for the Reds (Soccerbase), and the Hammers fans aimed a fantastic chant at the South American last night

What West Ham fans sang to Darwin Nunez
As the Liverpool striker recorded another blank in front of goal, the Hammers fans were having some fun in the Anfield Road end, despite the disaster that was unfolding on the pitch.

It was a total no-show from the West Ham players against the Reds – an embarrassment of a performance after a completely unacceptable team selection from Moyes.

However, despite the depressing viewing on show for the away end, the Hammers fans aimed a chant at Nunez that would surely have put a smile on every face in the Anfield Road stand, and even the striker himself may have had a chuckle:

West Ham fans saying Darwin Nunez is a not very good Andy Carroll.

— Simon Stone (@sistoney67) December 20, 2023
View Tweet
Andy Carroll played for West Ham for seven years before he left to join Newcastle on a free transfer in the summer of 2019.

He was a hugely popular figure at the London Stadium, and was just as well-known for his long ponytail and antics off the pitch as he was for his goals and performances on the field of play.

He has a penchant for the odd unbelievable strike, and always had incredible quality. However, his career was ravaged by injuries and he never reached the heights that he could have reached, had he remained injury free.

What West Ham fans sang to Darwin Nunez was absolutely brilliant last night. It was clearly tongue in cheek and a good bit of banter that didn’t overstep the mark. Well played Hammers fans on what was a really bad night for everyone involved with the club.

‘My goodness’ – David Moyes pays Liverpool huge compliment that fans will simply lap up

David Moyes could not hide his admiration for ‘really power’ Liverpool are they swept aside West Ham United.

The Reds romped to a 5-1 triumph at Anfield to reach the Carabao Cup semi-finals where the will face Fulham. The home side dominated from kick-off, with Dominik Szboszlai fizzing home the breakthrough in the 28th minute.

Curtis Jones doubled Liverpool’s lead in the 56th minute, which Moyes admitted was the ‘biggest turning point’ of the last-eight tie. Cody Gakpo then put the Reds further ahead before Jarrod Bowen’s strike with 13 minutes remaining gave West Ham a glimmer of hope. That didn’t lost long, though, with substitute Mo Salah restoring the three-goal advantage before Jones netted a sublime individual goal in the 84th minute.

The Hammers are also in the middle of a hectic fixture schedule like Liverpool. And despite rotating his starting line-up from last weekend’s 3-0 Premier League victory over Wolves, Moyes felt his troops were beaten by superior opposition.

The London Stadium supremo said: “We were well beaten by a really powerful team tonight. I thought Liverpool played really well. They made it difficult for us. The best part was we got in at half-time only 1-0 down and it gave us a bit of a chance. I thought we’d actually started okay and we grew into the game a little bit but we gave away a woeful second goal.

“I wouldn’t say it put the game to bed but it made it doubly difficult to get back and I just thought we’d started to get a little bit of a look in the game, which we hadn’t really had. “I’ve got to say, I’ve been here lots of times and been beaten lots of times but tonight was probably the one where I thought: ‘My goodness, how many more are they going to get tonight?’

“We weren’t strong enough. I thought the second goal was the biggest turning point. We got in at 1-0, had done well to keep it at that but the second goal was a killer. But it’s easy to say.

“Liverpool did a lot of good things and things that didn’t go for them at the weekend that went for them tonight. Couple of shots that went through legs for goals. Different things went against us.”

Moyes defends squad policy in wake of Liverpool debacle
By Staff Writer Thursday, 21st December 2023
David Moyes denied that he is failing to fully utilise his entire first team squad in the wake of tonight’s 5-1 drubbing against Liverpool at Anfield.

After watching his team – which featured six changes from that which started against Wolves on Sunday – blown away by a similarly-weakened Liverpool side, the manager suggested the result offered some indication as why he has been reticent to shuffle the pack – despite a packed December fixture list.

Embed from Getty Images

Much debate regarding Moyes’ perceived reliance on a core 14 or 15 players, despite West Ham’s current hectic schedule, has taken place on the KUMB Forum in recent weeks.

And the boss alluded to such discourse when asked during the post-match press conference to explain his reasoning for failing to call upon fringe players more frequently in the wake of tonight’s thrashing.

“We’re giving the players in the team opportunities,” he responded.

“We’ve been questioned a little bit about rotation and rotating the players, but maybe people might look at it and see the manager is making the right choice because he’s playing the players he thinks can get the results. I don’t think it [tonight’s defeat] was necessarily down to any individuals.

“We didn’t want to play some of the substitutes for 45 minutes or more. We were trying to save some of the players who’ve been playing all the Premier League and European games and find a way of giving those boys breathing space somewhere. We’re also trying to give the other boys who’ve not played in those games an opportunity to show what they can do.

“We could use the word ‘rotate’ and we’ve not rotated that often,” he conceded, “although we did in the really early games in Europe. But in some of them, the performances weren’t that good.”

However the boss indicated that there were likely to be more opportunities for those players currently lacking first team opportunities in the coming weeks. “I’m going to need some of these boys during the really busy period,” he confirmed.

“The African Cup Of Nations is coming up, some are going away for that, and these are the players that are going to be involved in the coming weeks and months.”

Dominik Szoboszlai scores rocket as Liverpool book place in Carabao Cup semi-final
BY

Liverpool demolished West Ham United on Wednesday evening, with Dominik Szoboszlai, Curtis Jones (2), Cody Gakpo and Mo Salah all on the scoresheet.

Liverpool-Dominik-Szoboszlai
HIGHLIGHTS
Liverpool convincingly beat West Ham United 5-1 in the Carabao Cup, controlling the game from the start and conjuring up plenty of chances.
Dominik Szoboszlai scored a stunning goal from a distance, showing great skill and technique in his strike.
Liverpool dominated the second half, with goals from Curtis Jones, Cody Gakpo, Mohamed Salah, and another from Jones, securing a comfortable victory.
Liverpool beat West Ham United in convincing fashion on Wednesday evening to advance to the Carabao Cup semi-finals. The Reds had control of the game from seemingly the very first minute and never looked like losing the contest. They conjured up plenty of chances on the Hammers’ goal and were rewarded for their efforts with the 5-1 victory after Dominik Szoboszlai, Curtis Jones, Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah all got on the scoresheet.

It was Szoboszlai’s opener that fans will be talking about for a while, though, as the midfielder took aim and scored an absolute screamer in the first half that left Alphonse Areola with absolutely no chance of stopping it. It’s not the first time he’s pulled something like this off since joining Liverpool and scored another cracking goal from distance earlier in the cup against Leicester City.

Liverpool break 53-year record in Europe despite 2-1 Europa League loss
His goal against West Ham wasn’t quite as ferocious as that one, but it was still a magnificent effort that will be talked about for quite some time by fans and pundits alike.

Szoboszlai showed great skill with the goal
The Hungarian midfielder broke the deadlock in the first-half
It’s not just the fact the strike was from a distance that made the strike so special, but the technique that Szoboszlai used when striking the ball too. Picking it up from outside the area, he clearly picked out the bottom corner and almost side-footed it as he gave Areola no chance of stopping it.

The strike sailed into the bottom left-hand side of the goal and was as clean a strike as you could ask for from a Premier League quality player. It was likened to something you’d see from Cristiano Ronaldo by Jamie Carragher on commentary and you can see why. The midfielder has already proven in the past that he is capable of a special goal or two and while this certainly won’t be the last we see from him, it’s one of the best and set Liverpool up for what would be a dominant victory.

The Reds wrapped things up with a dominant second half
Liverpool hit the back of the net four times after the break
After Szoboszlai’s superb strike gave Liverpool the lead heading into halftime, they came out after the restart and put the Hammers to bed with ease. Just over 10 minutes after the second half began, Jones doubled the side’s lead with a well-taken strike from the highest of angles.

15 minutes later and Gakpo extended the lead with another fine strike from just outside the West Ham box. It was a solid performance from Liverpool and one that gave West Ham very little chance of matching. Bowen did offer them the slightest glimpse of hope when he pulled one back for the visitors in the 77th minute, a delightful curled effort from just inside the Liverpool area, but it was too little too late for Moyes’ side.

Salah had the chance to give his side a fourth goal minutes after Bowen’s strike, but he uncharacteristically missed the target from mere yards out. He wouldn’t waste his next opportunity, though, bagging his first and the Reds’ fourth mere moments later. Jones’ second of the contest shortly afterwards wrapped things up and put the ribbon on what was an incredible showing from Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp’s men advance to the Carabao Cup semi-finals, where they will face either Chelsea, Fulham or Middlesbrough, with the potential of a shot at silverware very much on the cards.

Liverpool 5 West Ham 1 Player Ratings
Posted by Gonzo on December 20, 2023 in News, Whispers
Liverpool 5 West Ham 1

Areola:4 Forced into kicking so many times due to the teams inability to play through Liverpool’s pressing. No chance with the opening goal. Second goal went through his legs. Faced an onslaught.

Coufal:3 His technique was severely put to the test as Klopp’s team forced The Hammers into one touch football.

Mavropanos:4 Tried his best but really had no chance considering the players in front of him couldn’t keep the ball. Backed off too much for the third and got caught up field for the 4th (or was it the 5th?).

Ogbonna:3 Didn’t have the pace to close down Jones for Liverpool’s second but was asked to do far too much. Ogbonna has been a good servant for West Ham but to play him against such a fast high pressing team is negligent.

Johnson:6 Made quite a few blocks/interceptions . . . He had no choice. Should have closed down Szoboszlai quicker. Made mistakes but probably our best dribbler. Excellent pass created the chance for Bowen’s goal.

Alvarez:6 Incredible piece of skill in the 18th minute turned defence into a rare attack. Deserved to play in a better midfield.

Liverpool West Ham Bowen struggled with no supply line

Soucek:2 I felt sorry for him. Watching Soucek trying to move the ball quickly whilst Liverpool’s quick players closed him down was painful to watch. He made blocks and headers as one would expect. Didn’t track his man for Liverpool’s second. Lost control of the ball in midfield for The Reds third and gave up.

Fornals:3 Worked hard and defended manfully like everyone else but fluffed his lines when in a good position to pick out Bowen.

Kudus:3 Tried to help out Coufal when he could but hindered by the fact that West Ham couldn’t cope in defence or attack.

Benrahma:1 Awful ball control resulted in Liverpool’s opener. Wasteful with the ball but produced one good dribble albeit with no end product. Too hesitant when the time comes to pull the trigger. Bottled a 50/50 challenge in the 46th min which should have seen him substituted immediately.

Bowen:6 What chance did he have with such a poor supply line? Eventually broke through at the end of the game scoring a great goal with his right foot.

Substitutes
Paqueta: 56 min sub for Benrahma. Liverpool scored their second whilst Paqueta was stood on the side-lines waiting to come on. Pointless really, 10 mins too late and should have been one of many. Lost the ball for Liverpool’s 4th.

Ward Prowse: 72nd min sub for Kudus

Kehrer: Why didn’t he start at CB? Hopefully someone asks Moyes in the press conference. Anyway, 72nd min sub for Coufal.

Ings: 80th min Sub for Alvarez.

James Ward-Prowse dropped by David Moyes, six changes – West Ham United confirmed XI v Liverpool

David Moyes has named his West Ham XI as the Hammers visit Anfield to take on Liverpool in the EFL Cup on Wednesday night (20 December).

Alphonse Areola is the first of six changes as the Frenchman is given the nod ahead of Lukasz Fabianski.

There is a brand-new centre-back partnership from West Ham’s previous match against Wolves, with Angelo Ogbonna and Konstantinos Mavropanos replacing the everpresent Kurt Zouma and Nayef Aguerd.

Ben Johnson is handed his first league appearance of the season, with Vladamir Coufal remaining at right-back.

Edson Alvarez and Tomas Soucek remain in midfield but are joined by Pablo Fornals, instead of James Ward-Prowse, who is given a rest alongside Lucas Paqueta.

Without the Brazilian in attack, Mohammed Kudus and Jarrod Bowen are joined by Said Benrahma up front as they look to reach the EFL Cup semi-final.

West Ham took to Twitter to share their lineup for the game.

A lot on the line

West Ham will be hoping to qualify for the EFL Cup semi-final for the third time in 14 seasons but will need to defeat Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side in order to do so.

However, the 2022 champions of the tournament are unbeaten against the Hammers in the previous four meetings. West Ham last claimed victory in 2021 as an Alisson own goal, Pablo Fornals and Kurt Zouma outscored Liverpool in an exciting 3-2 thriller.

Furthering that, you would have to travel all the way back to August 2015 to see West Ham win at Anfield as Manuel Lanzini, Mark Noble and Diafro Sakho took all three points in the Premier League, with Philippe Coutinho and Noble both sent off during the match.

Liverpool versus West Ham promises drama, and with so much on the line for both sides, Wednesday night will be no different. Moyes’ future at the club could be circling the drain despite a recent European trophy and Liverpool are hoping to make a comeback after a couple of poor seasons.

In other West Ham news, Moyes must hurry to find a solution to a “significant problem” United are soon to face.

Jarell Quansah made to sign strict ‘car clause’ in Liverpool contract that all youngsters must agree to
Joe Adams

Published 17:26, 20 December 2023 GMT
| Last updated 17:26, 20 December 2023 GMT

Liverpool academy director Alex Inglethorpe has revealed that the club’s young players are made to sign an unusual ‘car clause’ to help keep their feet on the ground.

Jarell Quansash is the latest name to have made the jump up to the first team from Liverpool’s academy this season.

The 20-year-old defender scored his first goal for the club during the Reds’ 2-1 defeat to Royale Union Saint-Gilloise in the Europa League earlier this month.

Meanwhile, he showcased his elite mentality in his post-match press conference, brutally claiming that teammate Joel Matip’s recent ACL injury had gone in his favour.

ADVERT

However, to help keep Quansah and the rest of Liverpool’s younger players grounded, the club have a strict car clause inserted into their contracts which prevents them from driving flashy vehicles to the training ground.

In a fascinating interview with the We Are Liverpool podcast, Inglethorpe expressed his concerns over the pressure placed on young players in the modern game.

“There’s a balance, so what we now do is that the players sign up to a car clause. You don’t want them driving in with a Range Rover,” he explained.

ADVERT

“The reason you don’t want them driving in with something which is too big, too grand, too much of a statement is because it’s not just the manager and staff that might have an opinion on you but it’s the senior players.

“I’m not sure that James Milner, Jordan Henderson, Andy Robertson, the first cars they drove, there would’ve been an element of humility and I use it in a presentation with the boys.

“You can’t go into a race you’re never going to win, I don’t mean with the car, I mean with life, you can’t think ‘I am a first-team player because I have a better car’.

“We could afford to pay them more but we don’t because I don’t think that would be right, there’s something around deferred gratification than instant, you should earn it a little bit and the players know if we don’t approve of their car, they can park it in the David Lloyd [Gym] car park but it won’t be in the Academy.

ADVERT

“I don’t want to be an idiot about it but I don’t want them to work 10 years for an audition and fail it before they’ve even set foot on the pitches.

“I want them to be safe, there are plenty of choices around safety [with cars], you’re a young player in charge of two tonnes of metal, you’ve got to make sure that you take care of that responsibility.”

Inglethorpe also believes social media has been a catalyst in increasing the pressure on young footballers to present themselves in a particular way.

“I just think it’s important, there is a little bit more about image with Instagram or TikTok or how many followers you’ve got, it’s very easy for a young child to get wrapped up in the image of how you look or trying to keep up with a lifestyle that you have to and it’s a race you can’t win,” he added.

ADVERT

“There’s got to be an inner-confidence about how you are and I worry sometimes about the pressures of a young person now where their life is Instagram perfect.”

Liverpool have one position ‘high on agenda’ for January

ALEX CAPLE
Liverpool have one position ‘high on their agenda’, says Neil Jones and Piero Hincapie is certainly admired. The Reds may struggle, however.

Journalist Neil Jones believes Liverpool definitely do admire Piero Hincapie. The Bayer Leverkusen defender fits the profile they’re looking for – but it’s not going to be easy.

In fact, Jones believes Hincapie can probably be ruled out as a January signing. That doesn’t mean the Reds won’t try to sign a player of that type, however.

“There is no doubt that Liverpool need to be looking at a new centre-back, if not now then certainly in the summer, and there is definitely an admiration for Piero Hincapie of Bayer Leverkusen,” Jones writes in the Daily Briefing.

“At 21, and with the capability of playing both as a central defender and as a left-back, the Ecuador international is someone who is likely to make a move in 2024.

“Though given the position Leverkusen find themselves in, both in the Bundesliga and the Europa League, I think we can safely rule out a January move.

“Jurgen Klopp hinted recently that Liverpool may find it hard to get the player they really want in January, but they are certainly looking. And a young, mobile, ball-playing centre-back is high on their agenda. It may be even higher if another defensive injury arrives before January 1.”

The suggestion here is that Liverpool really could make a move for Hincapie – when he’s available. The only way that happens at Leverkusen is if they also sign a replacement, which isn’t entirely impossible.

The 21-year-old isn’t a regular starter for Leverkusen and if they decide they should cash-in, perhaps January is possible. But it sounds as though that’s unlikely.

And if Liverpool end up deciding a new defender in January is a must, then any new arrival likely rules out signing Hincapie in the summer.

In other words, the Reds like Hincapie but there’s a long way to go for him to move to Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp shares what he’d do if he wins Liverpool a second Premier League title
Wed 20 December 2023 14:30
James Brooke
Jurgen Klopp says he’ll still see his time at Liverpool as a success even if they don’t win another Premier League title.

Klopp led the Reds to a first title in 30 years in 2020, blowing away the division to finish on 99 points. In another life, the manager could have won three titles with Liverpool, but finished second to Manchester City by a point twice.

Speaking to Sky Sports: Secrets of Success podcast today though, Jurgen looked back on those seasons philosophically.

“Coming second twice behind Man City with one point [was a success],” said the boss. “And if you really want to then go into the season, moments, ref decisions where easily they could have gone the other way around. We played the same season, but different decisions at that moment and we become champions, no shadow of a doubt. That’s how it is.”

Although Liverpool were so close to three Premier League titles instead of one, Klopp has no regrets. In fact, the German says that even if the Reds were to win a second championship, he would refuse to take home another replica of the tophy.

“I don’t suffer because I don’t think ‘oh my god we are not champions’,” Klopp explained. “I have one of the Premier League trophies at home, would I buy a second one if we win it a second time? I don’t think so, I don’t need these kinds of things. I decided long ago that I decide for myself what I think is success and I don’t let the outside world make that decision because it’s always different.”

Klopp happy with Liverpool success
Although Klopp is happy with his lot at Liverpool, this shouldn’t be taken as an admission of defeat, or an acceptance of mediocrity.

Jurgen is clearly as determined and as driven as anyone to make sure the Reds win another title on his watch.

MORE LIVERPOOL STORIES
But unlike many in the fanbase, the manager also realises exactly what he’s up against.

There’s a reason why no one but Liverpool have wrestled a title from Man City since 2017. Pep Guardiola’s team are one of the most dominant the country has ever seen.

Of course it would be brilliant to have won three to their two over the past five years, but it just hasn’t worked out that way.

For Liverpool to run them within a point, and earn more than 90 points on two occasions is pretty incredible. Although regret will linger for supporters, there should be pride in that, too. Over time, there will be.

Still though, for all the amazing things Klopp has done at the club, it would be brilliant if he could end up with more than one Premier League win to his name.

That’s why this year feels so big for Liverpool. With City not quite their usual selves, the Reds have to give it everything. Jurgen may not be too fussed about getting that second trophy at home, but he’ll want it for the cabinet at Anfield don’t you worry about that.

Championship side Middlesbrough made easy work of League One opponents Port Vale thanks to goals from Jonny Howson, Morgan Rogers and Matt Crooks while all eyes will be on Jurgen Klopp’s Reds as they take on the Hammers in a huge clash tonight.

Illness hits more West Ham stars for Liverpool confirms top source as fatigue takes toll
Wed 20 December 2023 13:05
Damien Charles Lucas
Illness has hit more West Ham stars for Liverpool confirms a top source as fatigue takes its toll ahead of the Carabao Cup quarter-final.

West Ham will be far from full strength for the Carabao Cup quarter-final against Liverpool.

That has been confirmed to Hammers News by the top source inside West Ham less than eight hours before kick-off.

We reported on claims earlier that West Ham’s stars had complained about fatigue ahead of the trip to face Liverpool at Anfield for a place in the semi-finals.

Illness hits more West Ham stars for Liverpool
It comes after a sickness bug impacted key players in recent matches – particularly the 5-0 drubbing at Fulham.

Now illness has hit more West Ham stars for Liverpool confirms the top source as fatigue takes its toll.

The source has confirmed that illness and fatigue will mean West Ham will not be full strength for the clash with Jurgen Klopp’s Reds.

MORE WEST HAM STORIES
We’ve been told “a few” Hammers stars are sick ahead of the match. But the identity of the players set to be sidelined remains a mystery.

“A few are sick” confirms top source
“Some are tired/worn out,” the source told Hammers News.

“A few are sick, so we won’t be at 100% strength.”

It’s a real blow at a key time for West Ham as they go in search of another trophy. And West Ham fans will be justifiably concerned having witnessed what can happen when Moyes is missing even just a few key players.

Hammers supporters were left feeling sick and tired themselves when the draw was made.

Because since the 2010/11 season, West Ham have drawn a so-called “Big Six” side 19 times in the domestic cups.

Should West Ham make it to the semi-final, they would face one of Chelsea, Middlesbrough or Fulham over two legs.

Liverpool man to leave at the end of the season having just arrived during the summer
LIVERPOOL FC
Posted by Darren Looney44 minutes agoFollow @Darren95Looney

Liverpool will see their sporting director Jorg Schmadtke leave at the end of the season having just arrived at Anfield during the summer.

The German signed a short-term deal with the Premier League giants following Julian Ward’s decision to stand down from the role and will work with the Reds during January before leaving ahead of the summer transfer window, reports Sky Germany.

Schmadtke oversaw Liverpool’s midfield rebuild ahead of the 2023/24 campaign, which saw Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch all come through the door at Anfield; while the old guard of Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and James Milner left the Merseyside club.

The German sporting director will now be looking to do any last business for the campaign in January, where Klopp and Liverpool may add a centre-back to their squad to replace the injured Joel Matip.

The Sporting Director role is a position Liverpool need to get right once Schmadtke leaves as it has been occupied by several people since the departure of Michael Edwards during the summer of 2022.

Owners FSG are likely to be on the lookout for a long-term option at present and only time will tell who will get this crucial role at Anfield ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

‘I apologised’
Jurgen Klopp says he never picked £10m Liverpool player as much as he should have

Charles Jones
Wed 20 December 2023 10:15, UK
Divock Origi is a Liverpool legend.

The Belgian may not have ever been the Reds’ most important player, but he was always the player that stepped up in the big moments.

He scored big goals in big moments time after time, and speaking on the Sky Sports Football Podcast, Jurgen Klopp has been discussing the Belgian.

Klopp says that Origi remains someone he absolutely loves, claiming that while he didn’t play that much he was still a massive part of this team, sadly admitting that he didn’t play as much as he probably should have.

Photo by Pier Marco Tacca/AC Milan via Getty Images
Origi should’ve played more
Klopp spoke about the ÂŁ10m man and his time at Liverpool.

“Divock is a very special person, I love him to bits. I don’t know how many times I apologised to him that he wasn’t playing more. Divock was a massive part of this team and the team let him feel that. In the week he was one of the most important players we had, and in the weekend he still was but he didn’t play as often as he should have. We had the relationship we had for the long time we worked together, but it was a lot more up to Divock than me, I would have understood at any point if Divock said he has to go now, he didn’t get any special treatment, he took it like a boss, and he’s a Liverpool legend, and we wish him the best for the rest of his career,’ Klopp said.

Hard
We can see where Klopp is coming from here.

The Belgian earned a place in the team after his continuous huge contributions to this side, but, at the same time, it’s very difficult to find a place for him.

Let’s be honest, Origi was never as good of a player as Roberto Firmino, and he wouldn’t have been able to play that false nine role in the same way.

Yes, Origi was brilliant for Liverpool, but, at the same time, it’s hard to pinpoint a single moment where Firmino should’ve been taken out of this Liverpool side.

‘Very happy’
22-year-old Liverpool loanee just scored against Borussia Dortmund last night
Wed 20 December 2023 09:30
James Brooke
On-loan Liverpool defender Sepp van den Berg bagged his first goal of the season for Mainz last night.

After seeing last year ruined by injury, Van den Berg has quickly become a key player at Mainz. Starting 13 of the Bundesliga side’s 16 games so far and featuring from the bench in another two, the Dutchman’s getting the game time he needs.

Unfortunately, Mainz have struggled to get going, though. They currently sit just one place outside the relegation zone in the table.

Despite that, Jurgen Klopp’s old team secured a good result last night. Playing against Klopp’s other former side, Borussia Dortmund, Mainz took home a 1-1 draw, Van den Berg grabbing an equaliser just before half-time. And speaking to mainz05.de after the game, the 22-year-old said he was happy with the goal.

“I’m very proud of the team,” said the Netherlands U21 international. “The way we defended today was very good. Dortmund away, never easy. But yeah, I’m very happy with the goal.

“The way we defended, created chances in Dortmund against this team should give us confidence. [Now we have a] little break. Mentally especially, it’s been a tough, well, months to be honest.”

Van den Berg showing promise
As Liverpool scour the transfer market for new centre-back additions, they shouldn’t forget about Van den Berg.

Before he got injured at Schalke last season, the youngster had enjoyed an excellent spell in the Championship with Preston North End.

MORE LIVERPOOL STORIES
Turning 22 today (Happy Birthday Sepp!), Van den Berg is now at an age where his future needs to be considered.

If he isn’t good enough for the Liverpool first-team now, then the Reds should look to move him on.

There is an argument to be had that it would benefit Liverpool to bring Van den Berg back to Anfield in January. With Joel Matip out for the season, they could do with the cover.

But in reality, that wouldn’t make a great deal of sense. Although Mainz have been poor this season, Sepp will be learning a great deal from that. If he comes back to Liverpool he’d be getting the odd game here and there. It’s much better for the centre-back to be playing regularly at this stage.

At the end of the season though, you feel a decision needs to be made. If he can keep playing well, then perhaps Van den Berg will finally get a chance back home.

Given that it was a clash between his two old teams, you can imagine that Jurgen may have been tuned in last night. What better stage for the youngster to announce himself with his first goal of the season. Keep it up, Sepp!

MICHAEL OWEN ‘REALLY SURPRISED’ BY THE SKILL SET OF LIVERPOOL STAR WHO CAN’T DO THE BASICS

Darwin Nunez is going through a lean patch and he is coming under fire once again for Liverpool.

The Liverpool forward wasn’t helped by the fact that his side recorded a goalless draw at home to Manchester United on Sunday, in what was a pretty poor showing in front of goal.

Michael Owen expressed how he is still ‘really surprised’ by how raw Darwin Nunez is and how the lack of basics let him down, as he told Premier League Productions.

But the former England striker admitted that the 24-year-old can also ‘take your breath away’.

That’s why he probably divides opinion because, whilst the player himself doesn’t know what he is going to do half of the time, you would still pay a lot of money to watch him in action.

This is Liverpool’s club-record transfer and his second season in England, but now the fans want to see him take that next step.

But as Jurgen Klopp’s side push for the Premier League title, and lose top spot following the weekend results, Michael Owen shared his thoughts on Darwin Nunez.

Darwin Nunez’s qualities
“That hasn’t changed and that’s him as a player,” said Owen about Nunez’s off-the-cuff style.

“That’s something I have said many a time that I would be very, very nervous saying what you talk about him now because there are a lot of basics in his game that need improving upon. He actually does a lot of the hard things well. Some of the things he does, they take your breath away. You are thinking ‘wow’, if you could just get your basics right.

“I am really surprised at how raw this lad is. A player of his age and to come for that money, all the rest of it, and still be so raw.

“However, he has attributes that he could develop, with good coaching, it could come good for him – he could make you look silly if you pour scorn on his game.”

Liverpool v West Ham United
Nunez started and was subbed on Sunday against Manchester United, but that doesn’t mean he will he won’t start against West Ham United tonight.

It’s League Cup action for the Reds and Klopp usually rotates his players in this competition.

And with Nunez needing some form, it’s probably best he is handed another start because it’s needed for all parties.

Although, if it were up to the club’s legendary figure, Phil Thompson, he would drop Nunez tonight and start Cody Gakpo.

Liverpool could solve their centre-back woes with a move to sign Sao Paolo starlet Lucas Beraldo in the January transfer window.

It was devastating to learn of Joel Matip’s ACL injury especially given his contract expires at the end of the season.

Jurgen Klopp may now move to sign a centre-back when the winter window opens in less than two weeks with Lucas Beraldo a potential option for the German.

According to Italian news outlet Tutto Juve, Liverpool, Arsenal and Juventus are all keen on signing him.

Zenit St. Petersburg had an €18 million offer rejected as Sao Paulo want €20 million. Leicester City are expected to make a bid that matches their demands.

If Liverpool make an offer that satisfies the Brazilian club, they could gazump Leicester and ensure they find a solution to the diminished depth at centre-back.

Their are question marks over Beraldo’s readiness for a move to the Premier League given he’s only 20 and plays in Brazil but, by all accounts, he’s a very talented young player and has made an impression on the Reds’ scouts.

Reports last month suggested Liverpool are in pole position to reach an agreement with Sao Paulo but with the January window now days away, a formal approach has yet to materialise.

The games continue to come thick and fast for Liverpool, with titanic Premier League clashes against Manchester United and Arsenal sandwiching a Carabao Cup quarter-final tie with West Ham United at Anfield on Wednesday evening. JĂŒrgen Klopp has some difficult selection dilemmas to resolve.

Logic dictates that a game in the least important of the four competitions in which the Reds are entered is a time to rest some members of the squad. However, with the injury situation at the club seemingly worsening with every game, Klopp’s pool of rotation options continues to diminish.

As is customary ahead of Carabao Cup games, assistant manager Pep Lijnders took the pre-match press conference. He revealed that Ben Doak requires surgery having torn his lateral meniscus, an enormous pity for the youngster who would surely have received opportunities to play next month when Mohamed Salah is away at the Africa Cup of Nations. Doak would likely have been in the squad for the visit of West Ham too.

There was better news regarding Ryan Gravenberch, who was withdrawn early from the match against United on Sunday. “It was only DOMS so he’s fatigued, extra fatigue it means,” Lijnders explained. “So, we have to be careful but I think there is a possibility today that he can train. That’s really, really good news.”

However, Liverpool was already without six players prior to its last match and there remains no strong indication that any of the missing men will be back before the new year at the earliest. This puts the Reds’ depleted squad for Wednesday in sharp contrast to that of West Ham, who (per Premier Injuries) should only be missing Michail Antonio.
