Nobody can accuse Dominik Szoboszlai of lacking ambition. Less than a fortnight into his Liverpool career and with just a 45-minute outing under his belt, the new signing has already seen enough to set his sights high.

“To be honest, we can achieve everything that we want, if we do it in the right way,” says the Hungary international, when asked what a realistic aim would be for the forthcoming campaign. “We have some goals for this year, we spoke in the team, the coach spoke to us and told us what he wants to see from us.

“I think we have the quality, we have the coach for it, we have the fans for it, we have everything we need. Now it depends on us.”

Having joined £35million Alexis Mac Allister as one half of a summer midfield rebuild, expectations are high for Szoboszlai to become a key part of Jurgen Klopp’s next Liverpool team.

Of course, with Fabinho and Jordan Henderson poised to move to Saudi Arabia, that engine room reshuffle could be more extensive than was envisaged when the 22-year-old completed his £60m transfer from RB Leipzig earlier this month.

While fully aware of Mac Allister given his time at Brighton & Hove Albion and helping Argentina win the World Cup, most Liverpool supporters are less familiar with Szoboszlai despite twice appearing against the Reds when with RB Salzburg and starring for Hungary against England.

Wednesday, then, gave many a first glimpse, with his neat and tidy play allied by an obvious willingness to roam into several midfield positions.

But how does the player prefer to be used? “I want to be on the pitch!” laughs Szoboszlai when talking to a select group of journalists after the game at the BBBank Wildpark stadium. “But yeah, number eight, number 10, if I have to slide back a little bit to take the ball as a number six, no problem, but I want to be more towards the goal. But yeah, box-to-box I would say.

“I enjoyed the game a lot. I felt really good, in good condition with good players, in an unbelievable stadium. It was a good first one.”

Szoboszlai has already been given an idea of the different standards demanded at Liverpool during the ongoing training camp in Donaueschingen, which concludes with Monday’s behind-closed-doors friendly against Greuther Furth.

“It was not easy,” he says of the work thus far done in the Black Forest. “I came from a really good team in Leipzig, but still the pre-season is hard everywhere. Especially, I never had three training sessions a day before in my life!”

Szoboszlai made an impression by winning his section of the infamous lactate test and prompting plaudits from Trent Alexander-Arnold. “In my group I won it, but Mo (Salah) and Hendo were ahead of me in the other groups,” he says. “But I’m ready.

“The players been really welcoming, really nice. I feel as if I was here alreadsy, even though I only knew Ibou (Konate, who he played alongside at Leipzig). Everybody has been really kind to me, nice and helped a lot when I had questions.”

Liverpool 2023/24 season preview

The 2023/24 Premier League season is fast approaching and Liverpool will be hoping to be back competing for top spot.

Szoboszlai, though, hasn’t been surprised by the level of the squad he has discovered during his first training sessions.

“Before I came, I already put them in the highest level, so I expected it from them,” he says. “I want to learn a lot from them, how to be a player at that level.

“To me, the team comes before everything. It doesn’t matter what I’m doing, as long as the team is doing well. I want to help. I want to work for the team, give the fans what they deserve.”

Szoboszlai adds: “When I heard that Liverpool is interested in me, I didn’t need to think so much. It’s a fantastic club, I played against them at Anfield already, and the fans were unbelievable. The coach is one of the best coaches in the world.

“The guys have a lot of quality, a lot of them have won everything you can win. I want to learn from them and achieve everything that is possible with them.”

Confirm : Liverpool now on verge of finalising third summer signing, Medicals set’ – fee agreed with Fabinho replacement as Jurgen Klopp reinforcement continue…

July 17, 2023

Liverpool find themselves in something of a predicament as Fabinho moves closer toward a transfer to Saudi Pro League club Al Ittihad.

The Brazilian signed for Liverpool from AS Monaco in 2018 and has gone on to play 219 times for the club, gaining the nicknames ‘Dyson’ and ‘The Lighthouse’ for his ability to read play and spring counter-attacks into action. Across five years on Merseyside, Fabinho has helped the team win every major honour they have competed for.

However, his time etching himself into the fabric of the club’s history appears to be coming to end, as an offer believed to be in the region of £40m is being mulled over by Anfield officials, while the player himself not travelled with the 32-man squad to Germany to continue pre-season training.

This leaves numerous questions over what Liverpool will do in the 30-day period that stands between now and the first Premier League fixture of the season away to Chelsea.

The Reds have already spent £95m on two midfield additions this summer – Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai. These are more attack-minded options, however, so should Fabinho depart in the coming days, it will be imperative to swiftly snap up a replacement with defensive capabilities in midfield.

In that area the Reds have so far been limited to links to youthful talents, so it will be interesting to see how Jurgen Klopp switches priorities to anyone more ready-made ahead of a crucial season.

This piece of business also comes at a difficult time, with two of the English top-flight’s biggest defensive midfield talents – Declan Rice and Moises Caicedo – having signed for Arsenal and set to join Chelsea respectively. So, working with players that are on the market and using Fbref.com’s database, here are five candidates to take Fabinho’s spot in the Liverpool squad:

Romeo Lavia

The 19-year-old has been linked more than any other defensive midfielder so far this summer. He enjoyed a personally successful breakout in an otherwise chaotic relegation campaign with Southampton during 2022/23, making 29 Premier League appearances.

The ECHO understands that his age and experience would not be a barrier in his potential progression into Liverpool’s squad.

The foundations are clearly there with Lavia for Klopp to emulate his Fabinho project, based on the Belgian’s ability to turn defence into attack.

Throughout last season, Lavia managed 22 progressive carries of the ball, 21 of which entered the opponent’s defensive third. In comparison, Fabinho only recorded 15.

Although it could be argued that the Liverpool midfielder is more commonly associated with his passing range, something that Lavia trails in but not too far behind.

Fabinho completed 88.3% of his attempted passes, while Lavia completed 86.2%. Interestingly, however, the tables are turned when considering long-range passes (30+ yards). Lavia managed a success rate of 73.1% to Fabinho’s 69.4%.

Manu Kone

Another target linked earlier in the summer, Borussia Monchengladbach’s Kone is one of the continent’s most exciting prospects in this position.

The Frenchman offers a similar attraction in the department of moving play forwards, with 166 progressive passes in 2022/23 trumping Fabinho’s total by five. Kone also made more tackles, 74 to 65.

The major downside to any move for the 22-year-old is that an injury sustained before France’s exit from the European Under-2 Championship last month means he would only be reaching fitness come the start of August. Klopp simply has too many issues of this nature already, with Stefan Bajcetic and Thiago also on the road to recovery.

Joao Palhinha

Moving into the ready-made bracket, Fulham’s midfield general offers an interesting prospect for Klopp to mull over.

Since swapping Lisbon for London, the Portugal international impressed as his side bucked the trend to retain their Premier League status. He played a huge part in this, and this is the first reason he is an ideal, proven candidate for Liverpool.

Declan Rice may have already hinted at his plans for pre-season as talks continue between Arsenal and West Ham over a transfer for the England international. The 24-year-old is Mikel Arteta’s priority target this summer, football.london understands, and it’s believed a £105million fee has been agreed between the two clubs. The Gunners’ sporting director Edu Gaspar is locked in talks with the Hammers and it’s thought the structure of the deal is the only remaining stumbling block. With members of Arsenal’s first team squad expected to report back to the club’s training base at London Colney for the start of pre-season from Monday, it may not be too long until Rice joins them. Last playing for England on June 19 in the 7-0 win against North Macedonia, Rice has since been enjoying some time off and has recently been pictured in Dubai alongside fitness coach Chris Bowman, who posted a snap of the two together on Instagram.
