Manchester United are facing a defensive nightmare ahead of Sunday’s Premier League meeting with Liverpool after losing both Jonny Evans and Raphael Varane to injury during their 4-3 defeat at Chelsea on Thursday evening.

Varane was withdrawn at the end of the first half and replaced by Evans, who himself was replaced 20 minutes later after picking up a knock. The Red Devils are currently without Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof in this position, both of whom are sidelined for another month, ensuring Erik ten Hag has only two fit centre-backs to call upon at present.

Harry Maguire and academy prospect Willy Kambwala represent Ten Hag’s only options in this department, offering Liverpool a real incentive to deploy an attacking game plan at Old Trafford this weekend. Speaking after Thursday’s chaotic loss at Chelsea, Ten Hag offered updates on Evans and Varane by admitting he was unsure of the severity of their respective setbacks.

He said: “That doesn’t help in such moments if you have to manage the game, [it helps] that there are leaders on the pitch. Also Casemiro we have to take off.

“That doesn’t help. They know how to deal [with pressure] and how to bring the win over the line I can’t tell now what it is in prospect of Sunday but we have to take them both off.”

Pressed specifically on whether Varane will be fit for the visit of Liverpool, Ten Hag added: “In this moment, I don’t know. I can’t help.”

Anthony Martial has not featured since December and is still recovering from groin surgery, while Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia are also sidelined.

FOOTBALLLiverpool are pushing to close a deal for Sporting manager Ruben Amorim before the end of the seasonby Ben Moore5 April 2024

Liverpool are pushing to close the deal for the appointment of Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim before the end of the season, according to Portuguese journalist Pedro Sepulveda.

The 39-year-old has just dropped a huge hint regarding his future, telling reporters that he cannot guarantee that he will stay at Sporting going forward.

Having missed out on Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso, Liverpool shifted attention to Amorim and other candidates, and he is now set to agree a deal to join them from the look of things.

A move for Brighton & Hove Albion manager Roberto De Zerbi was also mooted as he scored well on their initial data research, but Liverpool had reservations due to his outspoken nature and confrontational approach to player recruitment.

Amorim has impressed since becoming Sporting manager in 2020, and while the Anfield gig is a much bigger job, he will fancy his chances of getting it right should he join the Merseyside club.

He won the Primeira Liga at the end of his debut campaign and has since landed two Portuguese League Cups and one Portuguese Super Cup, so Liverpool are hiring a proven winner should they decide to go after him as the replacement for Jurgen Klopp.

The former Braga manager has more than enough experience despite his age, and his style of play and attacking style should be attractive to the Liverpool faithful.

More importantly, Amorim has what it takes to deliver the needed results and make the Reds continue from where Klopp stopped, and it will be intriguing to see whether he will end up landing the job and how he will fare in charge of the club.

Replacing the German at Liverpool will not be the easiest of tasks, but the Portuguese is more than capable given the fine job he has done over the years.

Man City academy player has wowed in first-team training; Jeremy Doku couldn’t get past him

One of Manchester City’s academy graduates has reportedly been impressing whilst training with the senior squad.

The Manchester club have seen numerous players make their way through the academy and into the first team over recent years such as Phil Foden, Rico Lewis, Oscar Bobb and Cole Palmer among others.

Now though, a report has emerged containing details of another youngster’s first taste of being around the first-team and even managing to frustrate one of Pep Guardiola’s star players on the training pitch.

A recent report from the Daily Mail had this to say on the matter.

It said: “Gabriel and William Saliba both labelled Jeremy Doku as the trickiest player to face in the league last week – and there is no doubting that the Belgian offers something different for City out wide, something showcased on the right wing against Villa.

“But while he strikes fear into defenders up and down the country with a jagged and unpredictable dribbling style, there was one youngster who fancied his chances during a recent training session.

“Wales youth international Rhys Thomas, 17, won’t be a name City fans are overly familiar with. A full-back who can operate on either flank, he’s made six appearances in the Under-18 Premier League this season.

“The expectation is that he will become a regular in that academy side next year and he did his chances no harm when asked to participate with the first team a few months back.

“Thomas, who has recently signed a new contract at City, found himself up against Doku and the Belgian is said to have failed to jink his way past Thomas throughout the session. Doku’s teammates found this particularly amusing.”

The 17-year-old right-back has made nine appearances for City’s U1 side across all competitions and has managed to score one goal in that time.

Bearing in mind how Doku has the second-highest number of successful take-ons (72) in the entire Premier League this season, this showcases just how impressive it must be for Thomas to stifle the tricky winger in training.

Moving forward, it’ll be interesting to see if Thomas gets a chance to feature in the first team anytime in the near future.

Alan Brazil has been left shocked at the thrilling Championship promotion race after Leeds United’s late win against Hull City.

Monday’s game at Elland Road saw the Whites take the lead from an early Sam Byram goal before the visitors equalised through Fabio Carvalho. But a late Crysencio Summerville penalty and a long-range stoppage time goal from Dan James sealed a dramatic win to keep them a point behind league leaders Ipswich Town.

And the dramatic nature of Monday night’s win over the Tigers has left former Ipswich forward Brazil scratching his head. He also acknowledged the late victory scored by his old side against Southampton on the same day.

“The day before, what a day that was, Ipswich’s last kick of the game,” he said on talkSPORT. “Then Leeds, how did Leeds beat Hull is beyond me?!”

Leicester City sit a point behind Leeds with a game in hand after Enzo Marewca’s side earned a vital 3-1 win over Norwich City. The Foxes were 1-0 down at the King Power Stadium but fought back to earn all three points.

Leeds are next in action on Saturday away at play-off hopefuls Coventry City. They then host Sunderland four days later at Elland Road.

Speaking about the points tallies needed to secure promotion, Whites boss Farke said: “Last games are unpredictable. Top sides are doing an incredible job. Oustanding seasons.

“When you get to 90 you win the league normally. Probably 90 will not be enough to win the league. That may not be in the top two, but who knows.”

Jamie Carragher says there’s one thing Jurgen Klopp does at Liverpool that no other manager can do better.

UK
Liverpool have returned to the top of the Premier League table after battling to a 3-1 win over Sheffield United at Anfield on Thursday night.

On paper, the Reds were heavy favourites against a team at the foot of the Premier League table and looking destined for an immediate return to the Championship.

However, Liverpool didn’t blow the Blades away. Not on the scoresheet anyway. They boasted 83 percent of possession, but for a while, they struggled to break their opponents down.

The Reds did take the lead in the first half, but were pegged back just before the hour mark and needed a moment a magic to get back in front in the 76th minute of the game.

Alexis Mac Allister fired home a ferocious effort from the edge of the box to make it 2-1, after which Cody Gakpo rounded off the scoring to make all three points safe.
