Liverpool star who lost possession 28 times was a villain vs Luton

Liverpool snatched a point late-on against Luton Town.

Liverpool were moments away from sinking to an embarrassing defeat against Luton Town until Luis Diaz rose highest to head home and snatch a point in the 95th minute.

Given what he has been through, it was a miracle that he was even on the pitch with the kidnapping of his parents back in his homeland, but the Colombian came off the bench to save his side’s blushes and then honoured them in celebration by revealing a t-shirt which had “Libertad Para Papa” – freedom for father – written on it.

Whilst the fleet-footed winger produced a truly special moment, it was ultimately a performance to forget for Liverpool, especially in the attacking third.

The Reds hit 12 of their 24 shots off target, as per Sofascore, with Darwin Nunez encapsulating their wastefulness at Kenilworth Road.

Darwin Nunez statistics vs Luton
Liverpool were left frustrated by how effectively Luton nullified threat threats out wide, although the Reds didn’t help themselves by playing two inverted full-backs, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez, who made it easy for the Hatters to defend in central areas.

When the chances did fall to their forward line – particularly for Nunez – the Uruguayan was incredibly wasteful in front of goal.

He missed three big chances, including a terrible open goal sitter, and added to his blushes by failing to score from his nine shots, the joint-most attempted in a Premier League game this season – Haaland vs West Ham and Rashford vs Brighton – as per Opta Analyst.

The whole complexion of the match could have been a whole lot different if he hadn’t missed that sitter, though the hosts gained encouragement from Liverpool’s frustrations by ruthlessly carving through Klopp’s men on the counter as Tahith Chong gave them an 80th-minute lead.

While positives can be drawn for how constantly dangerous Nunez is in the final third, wreaking havoc in attack with his searing pace and movement in behind, demonstrated by accumulating 0.90 of Liverpool’s 3.04 xG, it’s the 24-year-old’s finishing that has so often prevented him from reaching his world-class ceiling.

Klopp’s biggest enigma wasn’t the only one to cost his side against Luton as Alexander-Arnold had an afternoon to forget from a defensive point of view.

Alexander-Arnold’s statistics against Luton Town
Going forward, Alexander-Arnold consistently shows why he’s regarded as one of the best-attacking full-backs on the planet, however, his performance against the Hatters provided further evidence of his defensive deficiencies.

In the attacking third he was near faultless as he utilised his right foot as a weapon of mass destruction, carving a dagger through the hosts’ back line having registered six key passes, nine crosses and completed a sensational 11 of his 16 attempted long balls, as per Sofascore.

On the flip side, he was dispossessed a whopping 28 times as Luton devised a plan to shut down his supply line by applying pressure onto him, with that sloppiness in possession translating across to his defensive work.

Rob Edwards earmarked him as Liverpool’s weak point defensively and tasked Chiedozie Ogbene with the responsibility of exposing his frailties on the counter-attack.

The Irishman took advantage of Alexander-Arnold’s inability to defend, terrorising him with his pace and power as the 24-year-old endured a tough afternoon defensively, winning none of his eight ground duels, making zero tackles and was dribbled past a staggering five times.

Ogbene was largely the culprit of that damage and the Englishman will go to bed this evening having nightmares of the horror show that unfolded at Kenilworth Road.

Carragher slams Raya AND Ramsdale in scathing critique of Arsenal goalkeeper mess – ‘Absolutely all over the place’
Samuel Bannister 7 hours ago

Jamie Carragher speaking about Arsenal goalkeepers Aaron Ramsdale and David Raya

Jamie Carragher has claimed the goalkeeper situation at Arsenal has become a ‘massive problem for Mikel Arteta’, since David Raya is ‘absolutely all over the place’ – but Aaron Ramsdale is not good enough either.

Arteta made the bold decision to bring a new goalkeeper in at Arsenal this summer, despite Ramsdale being their regular starter when they finished as runners-up in the Premier League last season. The theory was that Raya would come in to rotate with Ramsdale after his loan addition from Brentford, but he has been keeping his place despite some questionable performances.

Game-changing errors were on show from Raya when Arsenal lost to Newcastle United on Saturday, which was their first Premier League defeat of the season. Although the circumstances of the winning goal have caused controversy, Raya has been in the spotlight again too.

In a brutal assessment for Sky Sports, Carragher has explained how Arsenal never ‘moved the dial’ when updating their goalkeeping department over the summer.

And while many feel it was harsh for Ramsdale to be threatened for his role in the first place, Carragher has insisted he was up to the task of being a starter for a potential Premier League champion either.

But the main focus is on Raya after some repeated flaws were exposed, and Carragher believes he is quickly becoming a ‘huge problem’ for Arsenal.

Carragher told Sky Sports: “I feel like I’m watching a different team. They’re more solid defensively, but they’re not as fluid and they’re creating as many chances.

“Have Arsenal got a centre-forward and a goalkeeper who can win you the league? I don’t think they have. When you think of vital positions where teams win leagues, it’s in both boxes.

“It wasn’t a mistake as such to replace Aaron Ramsdale, as Ramsdale wasn’t going to win you the league. But the guy he’s chosen right now to come in is absolutely all over the place.

“I think bringing in Declan Rice has improved them but they’ve not moved the dial with the goalkeeper.

“They don’t seem as fluid, and it’s not just about the players they’ve brought in. The ones who were playing out of their skin last season are not quite firing this season.”

Arteta now has ‘massive problem’ on his hands
Carragher continued: “Don’t let it get lost in all the VAR stuff of the Arsenal goalkeeper again making another mistake. This is now a massive problem for Mikel Arteta. This is a huge problem.

“He’s made the same mistake he made as he did a couple of weeks ago against Chelsea. He got away with it against Sevilla, but he’s not got away with it here.

“The goalkeeper just keeps edging and edging forward. When the ball leaves Willock’s foot again, the goalkeeper is outside his near post. This is a recurring theme with this goalkeeper.

“Then he finds himself out of position, he can’t then reach, and it has a knock-on effect on the foul. I think Gabriel is stooping as he thinks the ball is going to evade the goalkeeper.

“The talk will be about VAR, everyone will be talking about it, but Raya is a huge problem.”

Arsenal have the option to buy Raya after his loan spell from Brentford and, as things stand, it is still expected to be one of the first bits of business they address in 2024.

Meanwhile, TEAMtalk understands Ramsdale is open to leaving Arsenal in 2024 to protect his chances of pushing for an England space.

Liverpool legend Carragher called a ‘disgrace’ by Arsenal star’s dad after mocking his son
Joe Williams 25 Sep 2023 8:36 AM

Jamie Carragher suggested Aaron Ramsdale’s reaction to the David Raya save was fake.
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has been labelled a “disgrace” by Aaron Ramsdale’s dad for mocking the Arsenal goalkeeper after the north London derby.

The England international recently lost his place in the Gunners side to David Raya, who joined on loan from Brentford in the summer for an initial £3m with an obligation to make the move permanent for £27m next summer.

Ramsdale hadn’t been in terrible form but Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta decided to give Raya a chance in their 1-0 win over Everton in their first match back after the international break.

There was speculation that Arteta might rotate the two goalkeepers but Raya also started the following two matches against PSV Eindhoven and Tottenham.

Raya produced a key save in the first half of their match against Tottenham on Sunday by scrambling across his goal line to claw away Brennan Johnson’s goal-bound effort.

Cameras at the match picked out Ramsdale on the bench applauding Raya’s crucial save before shouting encouragement – but Carragher has suggested the former Sheffield United and Bournemouth goalkeeper was being fake.

“You know when someone loses the Oscar and they’re clapping and smiling for the other person?” Carragher said on Sky Sports.

“I was laughing when I saw that. He’ll be absolutely devastated.”

In response to Carragher’s comments, Ramsdale’s dad wrote on Twitter: “You are a Disgrace!! Show some class!! My lad has.”

And Carragher went on to encourage Ramsdale to leave Arsenal in January if he can get “an opportunity at a decent club” with the Euros coming up next summer.

“I think he will be [leaving in January], if he got an opportunity at a decent club and Arsenal were happy with that,” Carragher added. “I think Arsenal will be looking at it and thinking they could get a few quid for him.

“You never have two goalkeepers at the same level at a club, especially top ‘keepers. Normally when that happens, it is because they are both not good enough and you can’t decide who you should be picking.”

Former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor also thinks Ramsdale will have to move on from Arsenal as Raya is now number one for the foreseeable future.

Agbonlahor told Football Insider: “I don’t see goalkeepers at Ramsdale’s age accepting being number two. He’s going to have to move because Raya will be the number one from now on.

“Henderson had to move from Man United, and this is the same. It’ll be frustrating for Ramsdale because he hasn’t made any real mistakes in an Arsenal shirt.

“He’ll be thinking ‘How’s this happened?’ Out of nowhere, he’s lost his shirt. If he’s not playing, and Pickford, Henderson, Johnstone all are – he could miss out on the Euros.”
