Although United were winning 2-1 at half-time, I think most fans in the stadium felt that we needed another goal as an extra cushion.

Especially given how we’ve been defending this season.

It will go down as McTominay’s first Champions League goal and it came in some style. A brilliant counter attack, brilliant cross and brilliant finish.

Real Madrid could hand world-class player to Liverpool
by Sourav Mahanty1 hour ago
Real Madrid have been linked with a number of players in recent times as it is pretty clear that Los Blancos need to improve their squad. There are a number of holes that need to be filled and the lack of options has to be considered as one of the key reasons why they have been dealing with so many injury problems as well.

For years, Kylian Mbappe has been considered Real Madrid’s dream signing. It remains to be seen if the French World Cup winner will end up at Santiago Bernabeu in the near future or not.

His current deal at PSG is set to run out next summer and so far, he has not signed an extension and does not look likely to do so either. Most people believe that Real Madrid are his most likely destination if he was to leave the French capital.

Liverpool are another side believed to be in the race to sign Mbappe. But their chances of signing him appear to depend on Real Madrid.

Real Madrid could hand world-class player to Liverpool
As reported by talkSPORT, L’Equipe journalist Loic Tanzi said about the Mbappe situation:

“Liverpool wanted him when he was playing for Monaco.

“Klopp went to see him and they were negotiating while they were on the plane.

“The relationship between him, Liverpool, and Klopp is there. I think they have a chance.

“If Madrid decide to let him go, and they don’t want him anymore, I think Liverpool have a chance.”

It remains to be seen what Real Madrid decide to do regarding a potential move for Mbappe. There have been conflicting rumours in recent times.

Some have suggested that Real Madrid do not want to sign Mbappe anymore. Others have claimed that a move will be made soon with his contract at PSG running down.

To be honest, the chance to sign a player of Mbappe’s calibre as a free agent does not come around often. So, if the opportunity does present itself, one would expect and hope for Real Madrid to take it. It is not hard to understand why the club are holding their cards close to their chest, considering past events.

Liverpool CEO Billy Hogan reveals discussions for next step in Anfield plan
Liverpool have been in dialogue with the mayor’s office about how to improve transport links

Liverpool CEO Billy Hogan

Liverpool CEO Billy Hogan says discussions have been held over how to better improve transport to Anfield for match days and concerts.

The redevelopment of the Anfield Road End is set to be completed and open to fans in January, with the £80m project having been hit with delays due to the collapse of former construction partners Buckingham Group into administration back in September.

The completed redevelopment will see capacity at Anfield increased by a further 7,000 seats, helping to better satisfy demand for tickets in taking the capacity up to 61,000. With the Main Stand having undergone a major revamp in 2016 at a cost of £120m, where an additional 8,500 seats were added, the capacity of Anfield has increased by 34% in the past seven years.

With more fans than ever coming to Anfield, improving connectivity between the city and the stadium is very much on the agenda for the club.

Speaking as part of a panel at the University of Liverpool’s Vice-Chancellor’s Conference at the Liverpool Maritime Museum on the city’s economy on Tuesday, Hogan said, via Business Live: “Nothing’s a quick or easy win that relates to transport.

“We’ve talked to the mayor and his team about how we improve that connectivity.”

Hogan said the “ability to jump on transport” was vital to a venue like Anfield, and that improved transport would be “super important” on match and concert days but would also help the wider community in Anfield all week long.

Also speaking at the event Stephen Jones, director at thinktank Core Cities UK, said: “There are some big public transport things that are hard, like train or metro.”

But he said there are smaller things that could be done more quickly to connect Liverpool’s stadiums to the city centre- such as improving walking routes to make them more welcoming.

Earlier this month, in an interview with BBC Radio Merseyside, Liverpool City Region’s metro mayor, Steve Rotheram, said that the collaborative nature of the devolved local authority means that the mothballed plan for a tram network could be reintroduced to service the stadiums of Everton and Liverpool.

Speaking to BBC Radio Merseyside, Rotheram said: “People ask about why we have this combined authority, why have we got a metro mayor? We have got a metro mayor because if we had what we have now in 2012 then we would have a functioning tram system in the city and city region. We didn’t have it because our local authorities didn’t work together as cohesively as they currently are. Two of them fell out, they bought some stuff, had to scrap all that, the money went back to the government and we lost the lot. Everybody lost out. We don’t have that now as we have six local authorities working together.

“It’s not about affordability. We had the money. There was a falling out about the process, which meant that we didn’t get that first line that was going to go from Liverpool to Kirkby, and from Liverpool to the airport. What we are trying to do now is retrospectively see whether we can fit something in, but a lot of that land in the corridors have had other things built on them in the intervening 20 years.

“There is potentially an alternative solution, and I’m looking at that. It is something that at some stage we will be telling the public about, but it can connect to Bramley-Moore, for instance, as we need to do more on that. But also Anfield. Anfield has just expanded and when that development is completed there will be another 10,000 people that need to get away from that area, so we’re looking at transport solutions, but we’ll only do it because we have devolution and a metro mayor that heads up a combined authority, in other words people working together.”

The footfall in and around Anfield will increase significantly again next summer, with the return of live concerts and the stadium set to welcome three sell-out dates for global pop star Taylor Swift and two for another pop music icon, Pink.

While the summer past saw no live concerts held at Anfield due to the redevelopment of the Anfield Road End, previous years have seen acts such as the Rolling Stones, Elton John and the Eagles perform at the home of the Reds, something that has helped generate millions of pounds worth of additional revenue for the club.

The Taylor Swift dates for June next year as part of her Eras Tour have seen unprecedented demand for tickets. “Taylor Swift has been the most popular ticket we’ve ever had,” commented Hogan.

With more fans heading to Anfield both in and out of the football season, improving connectivity is a priority.

OPINIONLiverpool should scout ‘next Sadio Mané’ with incredible goal record perfect for Jürgen Klopp
There is a player who is similar to Sadio Mané with a really impressive goal record who Liverpool should scout as he would be perfect for Jürgen Klopp’s style of play.

“LEARN TO DEAL WITH IT” | JURGEN KLOPP ON SADIO MANE & SAUDI INFLUENCE

Liverpool is known for scouting players for years before bringing them to Anfield. Recently, that was the case with Dominik Szoboszlai, who Liverpool had been following since his Red Bull Salzburg days. But he is not the only one.

Liverpool scouts had followed the progress of Luis Díaz and Darwin Núñez from when they were still playing their football back home in South America for their respective Colombian and Uruguayan sides. And before that Mohamed Salah was wanted by Liverpool when he was at Basel, before he moved to Chelsea and then eventually ended up moving to Anfield many years later.

By following players closely for years, it allows the club’s scouts to not only gauge the full potential of a player but also their character by seeing them grow from teenagers to men, and finding out how they deal with the pressures that come with being exposed to bigger and bigger challenges.

Perhaps one of the factors behind why Liverpool’s recruitment has been so successful has been this extensive research, and it’s what separates the Reds from the rest of the Premier League.

Given that Liverpool likes to follow players early, one player who should be on the club’s radar is Franculino from FC Midtjylland. A product of Benfica’s academy, the Guinea-Bissau attacker was signed by the Danish side last summer and has been a revelation ever since arriving at Midtjylland.

So far Franculino has 12 goals and three assists for the club in 18 games and just a total of 829 minutes played. This means he is averaging a goal or an assist every 55 minutes on the pitch for his club side this season, which is quite an incredible goalscoring record.

Clearly with an eye for goal, there are shades of Sadio Mané about him in the way he glides off opponents but also in the way he has been able to transition from playing as a wide player to often being used as a central forward just like the Senegalese winger had been used by Jürgen Klopp during his final few months at the club.

Franculino is only 19 years old, but with the way he can operate in multiple roles across the front three, he’s definitely got the kind of skillsets that Klopp admires and looks for in his players. If you look at most of his offensive options, they can all play in various roles across the front three which makes it easier for the Liverpool boss to rotate them.

Given his goal-scoring prowess, there are bound to be plenty of interested parties to lure him away from Midtjylland, even if he only arrived less than six months ago. Clearly, the step-up to Liverpool would be too big for now, however, the club’s scouts should look to monitor Franculino in the coming years with a view to a potential transfer in the future.

‘I’m no VAR fan, but…’ – Ex-Red uses 65th minute Etihad incident to highlight importance of VAR

Neil Mellor believes it’s a good job VAR is currently in place in the Premier League following one incident during Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Manchester City at the weekend.

With the Sky Blues leading through Erling Haaland’s effort in the first half, the hosts were pushing for a second as the clocked ticked past the hour mark at the Etihad.

City midfielder Rodri tried his luck from outside the area but his effort was deflected wide after the ball struck Ryan Gravenberch on the back of his leg.

Rodri, joined by a number of his teammates, confronted the referee gesturing that the ball struck our No. 38 on the arm and therefore claiming a penalty – something which had ex-Red Mellor thankful for VAR as he took to X to comment on the incident this evening.

I’m no VAR fan, but if top players like Rodri are going to start claiming penalties for things like this and put pressure on officials, I can see why we might need it!

VAR will have of course reviewed the incident but it will have only taken one look to see that the referee’s decision to award a corner was the correct one.

It’s rather bizarre that the City players could even claim it hit Gravenberch’s hand when it was nowhere near but we’re not overly surprised to see them asking the question to the referee.

We didn’t necessarily have VAR to thank on this occasion but we can certainly see where Mellor is coming from.

Had the referee awarded a penalty, the technology would’ve been used to ensure the right decision was made.
