After weeks of speculation, it appears that Tottenham Hotspur are closing in on a new centre-back. According to Fabrizio Romano, the Lilywhites are near to securing the signature of Micky van de Ven.

Why Tottenham Hotspur Needs Micky van de Ven

Having already played two pre-season friendlies, Spurs demonstrated their offensive capabilities but showed that their defence is still a point of concern. Despite peppering West Ham with 32 shots while owning 72% possession, the Hammers emerged victorious 3-2. Although they looked better against Lion City Sailors, they still conceded the first goal in the 14th minute of that match.

If Ange Postecoglou is to effectively compete in the Premier League, then obtaining an upgrade over players like Eric Dier, Ben Davies, and Japhet Tanganga is a must. Having been labelled as “extraordinary” by VfL Wolfsburg head coach Niko Kovac, the left-footed footballer could pair up nicely with Christian Romero as the protection in front of Guglielmo Vicario.

The Financials Surrounding the Transfer

Despite personal terms having already been agreed, the Italian journalist states that details need to be hashed out before the move can happen, including the payment terms as mentioned in his latest update. Romano has recently explained that Wolfsburg received an offer for their centre-back totalling £38.7 million, with the Bundesliga club wanting different payment terms or easier add-ons.

Romano mentions the request from Wolfsburg will be £38.7 million if the payment terms cannot be agreed upon. Van de Ven appears not to be the only centre-back target, with Romano confirming Spurs are working on the Edmond Tapsoba deal.

Either way, fans of the 8th-place finishers would deeply welcome a change at the back considering that they had to watch their team concede 63 goals last season.

A Potential Star in the Making

If the 22-year-old can produce the same level of quality that earned him the praise of his coaching staff, it is entirely possible he could become a mainstay in the Tottenham defence.
