Todd Boehly has beaten FSG to another mega deal but Liverpool is proof of the reality

Liverpool and Chelsea are run very differently, just as the Boston Red Sox and the Los Angeles Dodgers are. FSG and Todd Boehly have very different transfer ideas.

In the UK, Shohei Ohtani was a relatively unknown figure until recently. This 29-year-old Japanese baseball sensation, however, has just signed the largest sports contract in history with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Ohtani’s jersey sales skyrocketed within the first 48 hours, surpassing those of football legends Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, as reported by Fanatics, a global sports merchandising firm.

Ohtani, affectionately known as ‘Shotime’, is a three-time MLB All-Star and two-time Silver Slugger Award winner. His popularity has transcended baseball at a time when the sport has been battling to draw attention from an American audience increasingly drawn to short-form content in sports consumption. Despite these challenges, Ohtani has inked a jaw-dropping 10-year contract with the Dodgers worth an impressive $700m (£553m).

Interestingly, Ohtani will only receive $2m (£1.58m) annually from this deal while the remaining $680m will be paid over 10 years after his contract expires, with the final payment due in 2044. This arrangement allows the Dodgers to spread Ohtani’s salary over two decades and limit its impact by amortizing his cost over an extended period.

So how does this relate to Liverpool FC? The Dodgers are co-owned by Todd Boehly, an American entrepreneur who also owns Chelsea FC along with Clearlake Capital. Since Boehly and Clearlake took over Chelsea in May 2022 for $3.2bn (£2.5bn), they have spent over $1.3bn (£1bn) in the transfer market acquiring top young football talents.

To comply with Premier League profit and sustainability regulations, Chelsea offered contracts spanning seven to nine years to spread the guaranteed sum of transfer fees over a longer period. This move prompted the Premier League to introduce a rule limiting transfer fee amortization to five years, despite contract lengths being allowed to exceed this.

Boehly’s Chelsea beat Liverpool in securing both Moisés Caicedo, who signed an eight-year deal, and Roméo Lavia. However, Chelsea’s struggles on the pitch this season have been significant, and they currently sit 12th in the league, trailing leaders Liverpool by 18 points.

This isn’t the first time that Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), have faced Boehly. In 2020, FSG’s Boston Red Sox traded their star player Mookie Betts to the Dodgers due to financial constraints. The Red Sox were also interested in acquiring Ohtani this off-season, The Athletic reported, but found his wage deferral deal too risky.

While Boehly has once again outmaneuvered FSG in player recruitment, it remains to be seen how this will translate into competitive success in MLB. In contrast, the Premier League has yet to see successful results from Chelsea’s aggressive spending strategy. With Liverpool leading the Premier League after a more measured and thoughtful spending approach, FSG may ultimately have the last laugh in this high-stakes competition.

Liverpool.com says: While Boehly loves a gamble in the transfer market, FSG tends to play safer. Given what has happened to Liverpool and Chelsea recently, there is little evidence for why the Reds should change their ways. The reality is that spending and lavish contracts do not always equate to success.

REPORT: REDS’ INTEREST IN “BEST YOUNG CB IN THE WORLD”

LENY YORO: LIVERPOOL’S FUTURE CB STAR?
Liverpool’s strategic planning for future recruitment is in full swing, with the team already aligning its sights on potential transfers for the coming years. With the transfer window drawing near, Liverpool, driven by their proactive approach, is linked with several players. The most notable link emerges in the centre-back position, especially after Joel Matip’s season-ending injury. According to reports from French media, Liverpool have set their sights on Leny Yoro, the Lille defender, for both immediate and long-term plans.

Manager Jurgen Klopp is reportedly laying the groundwork for the 2024 and 2025 market, and Yoro has emerged as a key target. Amidst ongoing contract discussions with Ibrahima Konate, Liverpool dreams of pairing him with Yoro, enhancing their defensive line-up. However, securing Yoro’s signature won’t be straightforward. Manchester’s top clubs are also engaged in discussions with Lille for Yoro, but Liverpool remains resolute in their quest for the world’s top prospects.

YORO: A RISING STAR IN EUROPEAN FOOTBALL
At just 18, Leny Yoro has become an integral part of Lille’s squad. His performance has not only put him on the radar of several top European clubs but also cemented his reputation as one of the continent’s most promising talents. This season, Yoro has already made 18 appearances, showcasing his goal-scoring ability from the back with three goals in all competitions. His playing style is marked by composure, defensive intelligence, and an offensive threat at set-pieces, qualities rare in a teenager.

Comparisons have been drawn between Yoro and the former St Etienne duo of William Saliba and Wesley Fofana, now at Arsenal and Chelsea respectively. Yoro is tipped to be the next standout French centre-back, sparking interest from Premier League giants like Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City, and Liverpool.

Despite this interest, PSG remains a significant contender for Yoro’s signature. The Parisian club’s recent signings of young French talents, like Bradley Barcola and Kylian Mbappe, indicate their strategy of nurturing domestic prodigies. According to SciSports’ ‘Career Advice’ tool, PSG emerges as Yoro’s ideal club with a high ‘Club Fit Score’. Given the ageing Marquinhos and injured Presnel Kimpembe at PSG, Yoro could find substantial playing time and development opportunities in Paris.

Jurgen Klopp revealed that his half-time double substitution in Liverpool’s loss against Royal Union Saint-Gilloise was always planned.

The Reds were defeated 2-1 by the Belgian side, having already moved into the Europa League knockout stage before the game. Klopp fielded a youthful side who struggled to find rhythm although the result mattered little. Jarell Quansah bagged his first goal for the club in the first period.

Liverpool are top of the Premier League and have crunch games against Manchester United and Arsenal approaching. As a result, Ibrahima Konate and Wataru Endo were both withdrawn at the break against Union and replaced by Joe Gomez and Ryan Gravenberch respectively. Asked what his thinking behind starting Konate was at his post-match press conference, Reds manager Klopp said: “We just wanted to share the intensity.

“Do I want to play Joe Gomez 90 or Ibou 90 if we had the chance to do that? [I decided] 45 and 45, the same in midfield. These changes were planned before the game, independent of the result. We just tried to give it a go. It was clear that Jarell if he could play through then he would play through. That was the thinking behind it.”
