There may have been a few raised brows over the signing of Wataru Endo at Liverpool.

The Japanese international was brought in after Liverpool failed to land either one of sudden first-choice Moises Caicedo and backup option Romeo Lavia – both ending up at Chelsea.

Instead, the Merseysiders turned to a £15.6m bargain buy hailing from Stuttgart – a signing Jurgen Klopp’s men were ‘100% convinced’ would become a key figure at Anfield, according to Fabrizio Romano’s tweet.

International tournaments couldn’t have come at a worse time
It’s such a shame, as our German tactician himself conceded, that we’ll be without the former Bundesliga man just as he’s finding his feet at the club.

The time spent in the first-XI of late – as evidenced by Michael Reid’s tweet on the matter – has most certainly been beneficial in that regard.

Today is Liverpool’s 5th game in 13 days – and Wataru Endo is the only player to start all 5 of those games.

With Alexis Mac Allister expected to be back in January, there’ll be little in the way of opposition to the Argentine picking up where he left off at the start of the month.

It’s not the end of the world given the quality of footballer who’ll be slotting back into the No.6 position.

Ryan Gravenberch offered up a reminder to every watching Liverpool fan with his performance against Burnley on Boxing Day. The Dutchman was hit-and-miss, to say the least.

Ryan Gravenberch started for Liverpool at Burnley on Boxing Day as the Reds own 2-0 at Turf Moor. The team are now top of the Premier League – at least until Arsenal play on Thursday.

How much did Gravenberch contribute to that win? Not all that much. He was in and out of the game and struggled to make things happen.

Both Wataru Endo and Harvey Elliott – the other starting midfielders – created more chances than him. Perhaps most tellingly, Gravenberch was just less involved than most. His 41 touches, for instance, were far below Elliott’s 55, a player who left the pitch at the same time as him.

In fact, Curtis Jones, who came on for Gravenberch, managed 25 in 24 minutes. Dominik Szoboszlai’s 19 in 23 minutes was far above what the Dutchman put in.

And games like this are a reminder that Gravenberch is still actually a very young player. He’s only 21, after all, and while the quality is there to offer flashes of class – a run shortly after the opener saw him come close to a wonderful goal – the fringes of the game are where you’re more likely to find him.

Perhaps that’s not just down to his age, either. Elliott doesn’t have these problems and is at roughly the same stage of his career. Elliott, though, isn’t a player in his very early 20s who is also adapting to life at a new club in a new country, though.

That idea – that Gravenberch is a player with quality but without the experience to use it properly – explains a lot of the underlying stats. In fact, his data this season is incredibly interesting with that in mind.

Gravenberch, for instance, is second at Liverpool this season for progressive carries. That’s carrying the ball at least 10 yards forward while in the opposition half. He’s also fourth for successful take-ons (dribbling past a player).

That’s all great – but then comes the ‘young player’ stuff. Gravenberch is fourth for take-ons but Curtis Jones – who averages an almost identical number – has a far higher success rate (46% to 33%). Notably, Gravenberch ‘leads’ Liverpool in the number of times per 90 minutes he’s tackled while trying to dribble past a player.

Similarly, while he’s fantastic at carrying the ball, Gravenberch also leads Liverpool in miscontrolls. He miscontrols the ball over four times per 90 minutes. The next-highest midfielder is Wataru Endo at 1.67 times per 90.

It’s an identical story with passing. Gravenberch is fourth at Liverpool for progressive passes, with Harvey Elliott the only midfielder beating him there. He’s also fourth for completed passes into the penalty area – again, Elliott is the only midfielder above him (incredibly, Elliott averages 1.5 more passes in the area than any other Liverpool player).

But then you look at the ‘consistency’ stuff and again, Gravenberch looks like an incredibly young player. He has the best long-pass completion at the club but only because he literally attempts the fewest of any outfield player. That’s a bizarre thing to see from a midfielder – and it gets stranger as absolutely everyone else attempts at least one per 90. The Dutchman is at 0.5.

So if a long pass is one over 30 yards, a medium pass is 15 to 30 yards. Again, Gravenberch is down at the bottom. He’s not absolutely last here but still by far the lowest of any midfielder – six fewer attempts per 90 than the next lowest in Jones. And Jones’s success rate is 92 per cent compared to Gravenberch’s 86.

Is it a case of just sticking to safe, short passes? No. Gravenberch again has the lowest success rate over short distances of any midfielder. He completes 86.5 per cent of them. The only four players with lower are forwards and no other midfielder is below 90 per cent.

Gravenberch does a lot incredibly well for Liverpool. He’s up there with the very best for buildup, getting involved in 3.54 shots per 90. That’s above Darwin Nunez, Harvey Elliott, and Andy Robertson.

But he’s also just remarkably inconsistent. Gravenberch makes more mistakes than anyone else at Liverpool, especially in midfield. He’ll do a lot of good going forward, while also failing in possession more than most.

These would be incredibly worrying if Gravenberch wasn’t 21 and in his first six months at Liverpool. The fact he cost £35m and came with a reputation perhaps led to unrealistic expectations from some.

What we’re seeing, though, is someone showing all the traits of a very young, erratic, gifted player. If Liverpool stick with him and refine him, Jurgen Klopp and co. will turn Gravenberch into a star. Until then, it’s about taking the good with the bad.

Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Diogo Jota will be back in full Liverpool training less than a day after his perfect return from injury.

The Portuguese was back in the Reds’ squad after a month on the sidelines with a hamstring injury for the trip to Burnley on Boxing Day. It appeared it would be a routine triumph for the visitors at Turf Moor when Darwin Nunez broke the deadlock inside six minutes. But Liverpool wasted a host of chances in the first half against relegation-threatened Burnley and came under pressure after the break.

However, Jota was introduced from the bench and put the game to rest when he slotted home in the 90th minute – with Liverpool moving to the top of the Premier League. Klopp admitted that the Reds’ medical staff wanted the forward to have additional training before being introduced to action. But with Newcastle United visiting Anfield on New Year’s Day, Jota will undergo more sessions – meaning he will be fitter and sharper.

Liverpool manager Klopp said: “You never know exactly what you can expect with the fourth game in 10 days, it was really intense. Whatever the outside world thinks, it is really intense – and coming here and playing the game we played is absolutely exceptional. It’s exceptional as well that we didn’t score more goals… actually, we did but for different reasons they took them away. So, we had to wait long and obviously for a long time we caused Burnley so many problems, we played a super game. As the last game in a really busy period you cannot really expect that but we did.

“I really liked the game we played, but we should have scored more and that’s clear. Then the game stays open and Burnley have massive chances to score [at] the second post – maybe even the first they had, if I am right: the finish when he mishits the ball. I am pretty sure that was the first chance [for them], but in the end we deserved to win the game and it was two perfect goalscorers, I would say, with Darwin and then Diogo.

“We sneaked him in somehow on the squad list because he trained only twice and the medical department wanted to give him extra training and I said he can have that in Burnley. He had that tonight and now he can train tomorrow properly and then he will be ready for Newcastle, which is really helpful. Two-nil, no injuries, all good.”

Darwin Nunez divides opinion up and down the land every time he takes to the pitch for Liverpool.

Prior to Jurgen Klopp’s side beating Burnley 2-0 on Saturday to return to the top of the Premier League table, Darwin Nunez had gone eight Premier League games without a goal.

Before the match, Manchester United legend Paul Scholes was critical of Liverpool’s club-record transfer and his finishing.

But when the 24-year-old helped the Reds to three points at Turf Moor by opening the scoring inside six minutes, Paul Scholes admitted that he was proven wrong because he produced a ‘brilliant finish’, as he told Premier League Productions (26/12/23 at 6:20 pm).

The last game Darwin Nunez started was Liverpool’s goalless home draw against Manchester United where he flattered to deceive, before being dropped to the bench for the Arsenal match.

But he returned to the XI with a bang yesterday to remind his critics that he can still deliver the goods for his Premier League title-chasing side.

One of them so happened to be Paul Scholes, who was happy to give the all-action forward his flowers after the match.

“He had a little bit of criticism off me before the game for his finishing,” said Scholes.

“I did say (this would be the type of game for him). In these types of games, he seems to come up with something. Bournemouth earlier on in the season.

“But that’s a brilliant finish. Nice and composed. It’s them other ones, them simple ones that he seems to miss and the difficult ones he seems to put away.”

Darwin Nunez keeps knocking on the door
Every time Nunez seems to get knocked down, he gets back up and proves his worth.

Yes, he continues to have this knack for being reckless, but that is what makes him so watchable and entertaining.

Where the Uruguay star probably needs to up his game is by being more ruthless and being able to do the simple things on a more consistent basis.

So far this season, Nunez has five goals and five assists from 18 Premier League games. That’s pretty good going for a player lacking consistency.

Imagine what he would do if he did find that ruthless edge to his game.

Burnley manager Vincent Kompany claimed that his side was a ‘danger’ to Liverpool during his 2-0 defeat in the Premier League on Tuesday. But the Clarets were only let off by poor finishing and decision-making from the Reds in the final third.

“We were a little too open in the first half,” the Burnley boss told Amazon Prime Video after the final whistle. “We were still dangerous in transition opportunities but we just didn’t find the final ball or make the right decision.

“At times, we were in numbers counter-attacking. The difference is how they scored the goal, we weren’t able to do the same thing. We kept being dangerous and we had a chance. If that goes in then it is 1-1 but unfortunately, the game opens up and they are so good in those moments.”

Kompany was also asked about the disallowed Harvey Elliott goal. Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp was unhappy that an offside was called because Mohamed Salah had been pushed into the line of the goalkeeper, who would have been unlikely to save the shot anyway. Amazon presenter Dan Walker asked Kompany for his take.

“Are you asking me to be non-biased?” the former Manchester City captain responded. “It is a bigger picture discussion for me. We have had a lot of conversations where in these moments, things have gone against us.

“I understand Jürgen’s opinion and position but from my perspective, how many times I’ve been here saying that it cost us points, they got the win. We have to move on to the next game.”

Klopp has expressed his frustration at the use of VAR. The German explained that only someone who had not played football before could rule out a goal in that manner. But the assistant referee and the VAR can only go by the rules of the game. While it might have felt harsh or unfortunate, by the letter of the law, Salah was in an offside position and in the line of sight of James Trafford.

Liverpool.com says: While Elliott was unfortunate with his disallowed goal, the other disallowed goal for Cody Gakpo was the really controversial one. Paul Tierney gave a foul but even Charlie Taylor, the man on the end of the supposed infringement, didn’t appear to believe that he had been tugged or clipped. If Liverpool should have complaints about either situation, it should be that one.

Liverpool’s latest victory was made a slightly nervy affair until Diogo Jota’s late strike added to Darwin Nunez’s early opener. This was due to the decisions to chalk off two goals scored by the visitors.

The first came before the break, scored by Cody Gakpo and disallowed by referee Paul Tierney immediately for what was deemed a foul by Nunez on Charlie Taylor in close proximity. The ECHO understands the decision stood as VAR could not find enough evidence to overturn it, whilst replays showed minimal contact was made by the Reds’ No.9.

Speaking on Amazon Prime’s coverage after the final whistle, Clattenburg said Tierney, who he thought officiated well overall, got this one wrong.

“See, I thought Paul Tierney refereed this game really well, he played a wonderful advantage for Liverpool’s second goal but this one I don’t agree with,” he said. “You look at the reaction of the Burnley defender – he puts his hands to his head. He’s gone in front of Nunez and when I see it from different angles I don’t see any contact from Nunez, therefore I don’t see it as a foul.

“Once Paul Tierney gives it – and this is why there’s so many arguments if the VAR is doing his job or not – this is such a subjective call. He’s made the decision on the field of play and the VAR’s gone ‘you know what? There’s not enough to disallow it’.

“I don’t agree, I think the best decision would have been to play on and the goal be given. There isn’t enough contact, for me, to be awarded as a foul.”

The man who took charge of the Euro 2016 final was also tasked with dissecting the other goal struck from the record, which had been blasted beyond James Trafford by Harvey Elliott.

That one passed Tierney’s initial check however VAR Simon Hooper prompted his colleague to revisit it at the pitchside monitor, where he ruled it out as Mohamed Salah was deemed to have blocked the goalkeeper’s line of vision from an offside position, the ECHO also understands.

Again there was contention as Salah had been pushed into his offside position whilst Elliott’s shot was too powerful for Trafford, who was moving in the opposite direction anyway, to deal with. Clattenburg could better understand why this decision was taken as it is the referee’s job to apply the current laws as they are laid out, not to determine the movement of goalkeepers.

“I can see it from both sides,” he explained. “The referees are applying the laws of the game as they’re written – was Mo Salah in an offside position? Yes. Was he pushed in an offside position? Yes. Was that enough for a penalty? No. Factually he’s in an offside position. Is he in the line of the goalkeeper at the moment Elliott strikes the ball? Yes.

“You can argue the goalkeeper is going one way. Is he trying to go one way to save the ball? We don’t know, we’re not goalkeepers. Referees are only applying laws of the game as they’re written.

“What we look at as well is the distance. Mo Salah is quite close to Trafford, the goalkeeper, in the six-yard box. If Mo Salah was five, ten metres further up it would give Trafford a chance to save the ball, but as the ball is struck there is an argument is Trafford going one way? Would he have had a chance to save it? That is not the referee’s decision, it’s applying the laws as they’re written.

“Was Mo Salah offside? Yes. Was he in the line of vision? Yes, so I can understand why it was ruled out.

“For me, the easiest decision for the referee once he’s gone to the screen is to disallow it.”

He interestingly added that had Elliott aimed his effort towards the left side of the goal instead of the right then Liverpool may have found themselves doubling their advantage much sooner in the match.

“If it had gone in the other side [of the goal] I don’t think it would have been an issue, it is because Salah has blocked that side where the ball has gone and doesn’t give him a chance to save it. We don’t want to be working out what the goalkeeper is going to be doing next as we’re just referees, we’re applying the laws of the game. Even if we don’t agree with them, the referees apply the way they’re written at the moment.

“If it had flashed into the top corner on the other side it would have been a very different goal because the goalkeeper would certainly have not had a chance to save it.”

Striker Darwin Nunez ended a 12-match goal drought to help fire Liverpool back to the top of the table with a 2-0 victory at Burnley.

The Uruguay international, who had not scored a Premier League goal since the end of October, made the crucial breakthrough in the first half before substitute Diogo Jota marked his first appearance in a month with the clincher in the 90th minute – his 50th goal for the Reds.

While it was in most respects a comfortable victory – they had two goals disallowed and also hit the woodwork – for a team registering five changes from the exhausting draw with Arsenal, Jurgen Klopp’s team made things more difficult than they had to be against opponents who have now lost nine of 10 home games.

Burnley boss Vincent Kompany famously put a spanner in the Liverpool works when his long-range strike against Leicester tipped the 2018-19 title race in Manchester City’s favour, but there were no such heroics from his struggling team, whose cause was not helped by wins for Luton and Nottingham Forest.

Their best hope was to take chances when they came and hope the visitors had an off day but they were their own worst enemy in the final third, making poor decisions, giving the ball away and being robbed of possession too easily.

In only the fifth minute, Zeki Amdouni launched a four-on-three but then sliced wide from 25 yards to waste their numerical advantage.

That was symptomatic of their shortcomings and they were punished immediately as from Liverpool’s next attack Cody Gakpo’s cutback picked out Nunez whose first-time finish curled the ball inside the far post from 25 yards.

It was just reward for his endeavour as he had sparked the move down the left and picked himself up off the turn after beating Dara O’Shea to rejoin the attack.

The procession began with Mohamed Salah failing with three attempts – one clipping the crossbar – and Gakpo and Wataru Endo also not able to add to the score.

Gakpo, one of the better performers out on the left, thought he had doubled the lead when he fired home a rebound from one of James Trafford’s eight first-half saves but referee Paul Tierney ruled Nunez had fouled Charlie Taylor.

Liverpool continued to plug away but when a simple one-two between Harvey Elliott and Ryan Gravenberch saw the latter side-foot home early in the second half, the offside Salah was in Trafford’s eye-line and Tierney ruled it out after a VAR referral.

That was Burnley’s cue to fight back, with a Jordan Beyer shot deflected over and Sander Berge effort bundled well wide.

Burnley’s worst miss saw Johan Gudmundsson plant a far-post free header over a half-empty goal, although fellow substitute Jacob Bruun Larsen should have done better when Endo passed straight to him 30 yards out.

The improvement of Liverpool’s midfield by the arrival of Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones saw the former unable to turn in the latter’s header at the far post.

Liverpool’s attempts to manage the game with Newcastle at home on New Year’s Day offered Burnley some encouragement and Trent Alexander-Arnold whistled a left-footed shot just wide to remind them of the threat the visitors still carried.

That was underlined by Jota firing home an angled shot in the 90th minute and Klopp’s fist pumps in front of a travelling support singing “Liverpool top of the league” showed how important that goal was.

Delighted Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has credited his team for reaching the top of the Premier League without being ‘perfect’.

Strikers Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota each scored their first goals since November as Liverpool won their final match of 2023 at Burnley to move above Arsenal to the summit.

Mikel Arteta’s Gunners can reclaim the lead by beating West Ham on Thursday but Klopp, whose side next play on New Year’s Day against Newcastle, is pleased with how his gutsy new-look side is shaping up.

‘The first part of the season has not been perfect but absolutely alright,’ he said.

‘We can not now be more than a point away from the top after this week’s games – that’s within punching distance.

‘Whatever the outside world thinks, it is really intense to play four matches in 10 days. It’s been a really busy period.

‘It’s nice to be top. I won’t raise my arms because it will probably changed but to have 42 points is really pleasing. Darwin and Diogo were the perfect scorers for us.

‘Darwin is an incredible finisher but if a striker doesn’t score, you question everything in the moment. Now he has it (another goal), so it’s all good.’

Nunez struck early on with his first goal in 13 matches but Burnley rallied strongly after Harvey Elliott had a goal controversially ruled out for offside.

The hosts should have levelled when Johann Berg Gudmundsson missed a sitter before Jota came off the bench after missing a month with a hamstring injury and sealed the points late on.

Skipper Virgil van Dijk was delighted to see Nunez in particular end his drought. ‘Obviously as a striker if you don’t score for a little bit, it can get into your head,’ he said.

‘It is never easy at Burnley and we had to suffer. There was a bit of chaos after our goal was disallowed and I am pleased with the performance.’

Klopp was fuming that Elliott had been denied a goal because Mo Salah was standing offside, though the Liverpool manager didn’t think he was interfering with play.

‘It’s insane – honestly,’ rapped the Liverpool boss.

‘This man, if he never played football, then it can happen. You think ‘offside rule, let me see, page seven’, there is somebody between him and the goalie. That’s ridiculous. That is a clear goal.’

Burnley boss Vincent Kompany was Manchester City skipper when they competed with Liverpool. ‘They are returning to those levels of intensity,’ he said. ‘Only the future will tell if they can get the same quality.’

His Clarets side are stuck in the bottom three but showed plenty of spirit at Turf Moor.

‘You aren’t going to prevent them having good moments but we had our own moments too,’ he said.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp named his Man of the Match for tonight’s 2-0 win over Burnley.

Officially, Virgil van Dijk was given the nod as the game’s best player on Boxing Day. But Klopp had a different view.

Speaking to Amazon Prime via BBC Sport after the game, the Reds boss named Wataru Endo as Liverpool’s top performer on the day.

“Another player who could have been in contention [for MOTM] was Wataru Endo,” enthused Klopp.

“What a game he played.”

Endo stakes his claim again
We’re minded to agree with Klopp here. We also named Endo as Liverpool’s Man of the Match this evening. Good eye, Jurgen.

The Japan international has come on leaps and bounds in recent weeks. Having started each of the Reds last three matches, Endo now looks completely settled.

With Alexis Mac Allister still injured, the 30-year-old is the only real option Klopp currently has in defensive midfield.

And although he’s had a few shaky displays along the way this season, Endo now looks capable of playing that role for Liverpool.

Not only has he started four games in 10 days for the Reds, but he’s completed three of those four, too. Klopp has changed those either side of Wataru with regularity, but he’s kept his No.3 on throughout it all.

All in all, Endo has started Liverpool’s last seven games. He’s one of the first names on the team sheet right now.

That shows the faith the boss now has in him. And with performances like these, the former Stuttgart man is justifying that faith.

It wasn’t all perfect tonight. In fact, Endo could have cost Liverpool the game. But thankfully, Jacob Bruun Larsen couldn’t convert his lax giveaway ball across the Reds’ defence. Endo’s copybook remained unblotted.

We have to say, we weren’t sure about the signing of the Japan captain. But his form of late has completely vindicated the surprise decision to bring Endo in.

Long may it continue!

Manchester United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir has yet to be handed his first opportunity under Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.

Manchester United are pleased with the training levels of backup goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, as journalist Fabrizio Romano provides GIVEMESPORT with an exclusive internal update on the shot-stopper at Old Trafford.

Red Devils head coach Erik ten Hag ensured that the club signed two ‘keepers during the 2023 summer transfer window, with Inter’s Andre Onana also arriving in Manchester.

Bayindir hasn’t got a look-in during the 2023/24 season but could find an opportunity for regular minutes opening up in the new year. Man Utd hope to improve their standing in the Premier League, having already exited European competition after finishing bottom of their Champions League group.

Bayindir’s Man Utd career
During the 2023 summer transfer market, Manchester United were in desperate need of signing two goalkeepers. Long-term first-choice stopper David de Gea was allowed to leave Old Trafford at the end of his contract in June after the Red Devils decided against offering the former Spain international a new deal. Man Utd moved quickly in the market to replace the former Atletico Madrid No. 1 and confirmed the signing of Inter’s Onana in July in a deal worth £47.2m.

Late in the transfer window, United would also dispense of the services of Dean Henderson, who had spent the 2022/23 campaign on loan at Nottingham Forest. In the final days of the summer, Crystal Palace acquired the signature of the former England U21 star for a fee in the region of £20m. This left United short in their goalkeeper department and desperate to sign another option between the sticks to compete with Onana for a place in ten Hag’s starting lineup.

On Deadline Day of the summer transfer window, Manchester United confirmed that Fenerbahce goalkeeper Bayindir had signed for the Old Trafford outfit for just over £4m. The 25-year-old signed a four-year deal with the option of a further 12 months, cementing his long-term future with the Manchester giants.

Speaking to the club’s official website (via Sky Sports), Bayindir expressed how it was a huge honour for him to represent Manchester United:

“It is a huge honour to join Manchester United and become the first Turkish player to represent this incredible club. I have a passion for success, and I will give everything to help this special group of players to achieve our ambitions.”

However, the 6ft 6in Bayindir has yet to appear for ten Hag’s side despite Onana’s struggles. But opportunities could knock for the Turkey international in the very near future.

Romano has claimed that Man Utd are “very confident” in Bayindir and believe they have signed a “very good” backup goalkeeper. The Italian journalist also hints that the second-choice stopper could play a prominent role for the club, with Onana potentially departing for the African Cup of Nations in January. Romano told GIVEMESPORT:

“Man Utd are very confident in Bayindir. They’re very happy with him in training. They believe they signed a very good backup goalkeeper, so they finally have a very good and competitive one. Bayindir is doing great in training and has a great relationship with his teammates. Everyone at the club trusts him. So, they decided to go for him because they knew the potential issue with Onana going to AFCON. So, I’m sure they have 100% faith in and trust him.”

As the 2024 winter transfer window approaches, ten Hag will consider which players he’d like to see arrive and depart at Old Trafford as he prepares to shape his squad further. According to Capenda Cope, Real Madrid could look to re-sign Manchester United centre-back Raphael Varane after David Alaba was ruled out for the rest of the 2023/24 season after suffering a severe injury.

ESPN claims that ten Hag hopes to keep Varane and Casemiro during the January market. Transfer insider Dean Jones has recently told GIVEMESPORT (15th December) that the French centre-back is frustrated at Old Trafford but may not get his move in the upcoming window.

Meanwhile, The Sun reports that Manchester United are eyeing up Real Sociedad’s Takefusa Kubo as a replacement for Antony. Despite the Brazilian only arriving at Old Trafford during the summer of 2022, ten Hag is said to be preparing for his exit and has sent scouts to watch Kubo on seven occasions during the 2023/24 season.

And 90min claims Bayer Leverkusen, RB Leipzig and VfB Stuttgart are considering potential deals to sign winger Jadon Sancho. After a public fallout with ten Hag, the former England international has not appeared in a Manchester United squad since September.

Wataru Endo hit a mark unseen at Liverpool for 18 years when he started for the Reds against Burnley on Boxing Day. Jurgen Klopp has put all his trust in the Japanese international.

Wataru Endo started for Liverpool at Burnley in their Boxing Day Premier League fixture. In doing so, he hit a mark unseen at the Reds for 18 years.

As Michael Reid pointed out on Twitter, Liverpool have just played their fifth game in 13 days. Endo is the sole player to have started every single one – a feat no player has matched since January 2006.

Back then, rotation wasn’t quite as common as it was now. Thus there were actually several players to start five games in 13 days: Steven Finnan, Jamie Carragher, Sami Hyypia, Steven Gerrard, Harry Kewell and Peter Crouch.

No one did it since, however, as managers collectively cut back on the number of games players started. Endo has been an anomaly then – and in a game he really didn’t need to start.

Endo started slowly to life at Liverpool. In fact, some of his early games were downright bad and it appeared that he was out of his depth.

Jurgen Klopp stuck with him, however, and the holding midfielder is now literally the most consistent part of the starting XI. Of course, a part of that is Endo being the sole holding midfielder in the squad with Stefan Bajcetic and Alexis Mac Allister still injured.

But it also shows just how much Klopp trusts the player. Endo actually went into the Burnley fixture one yellow card away from a suspension. The boss didn’t just trust him to start – he played him for the full 90 minutes.

He never did pick up that yellow, either, and will be available to play against Newcastle United on New Year’s Day. And the way things are going, everyone should probably expect him to start.

VAR, Paul Tierney and Liverpool make for a decidedly interesting mix in football, albeit a rarely beneficial one for the latter party!

The trio combined once more to deny the visitors what appeared to be a legitimate goal at Turf Moor, with Cody Gakpo denied after Darwin Nunez was adjudged to have fouled Charlie Taylor in the box.

The team at VAR upheld the on-pitch official’s decision on the matter, much to the surprise of journalists observing the event on X (formerly Twitter).

Genuinely surprised that was ruled out. The fact Charlie Taylor immediately put his hands on his head rather than appealed to the referee told you everything you needed to know.

Burnley got a bit lucky there. There was contact between Taylor and Nunez but probably not as much as Taylor was making out. “Fuck off Tierney” shout the away end after what appears a foul on Gravenberch is not given

When will it end? When will things improve? Do we need to get rid of VAR or (fairly) demand more from the Premier League’s officials?

All worthwhile questions, though ones we suspect won’t be answered with any haste.
