Son Heung-min wants nothing to do with Bukayo Saka in ‘ego battle’ expert claims

A frosty meeting between North London Derby rivals Son Heung-min and Bukayo Saka has been dissected by a body language expert.

Tottenham ace Son and Arsenal star Saka have been pictured together at London Fashion Week, with a clip of the pair being posted on social media. Perhaps with Sunday’s clash at the Emirates in mind, neither player looks particularly comfortable in the other’s presence.

Both men shuffle in their seats while Son actually moves away from Saka. Eye contact between the duo, at least in the 11-second video posted on X (formerly Twitter), is non-existent. Body language expert Darren Stanton has run the rule over the clip and says it represents a clear battle of egos between two elite footballers.

He told Daily Star Sport via MyBettingSites: “Saka is being a bit mischievous and he sits right up close to him, while Son moves apart to create some distance. Psychologically what he’s saying is, ‘I don’t want anything to do with you and it’s quite a powerful gesture. I want to be seen in my own right, I want to be photographed in my own right, I don’t particularly want to be associated with you’ and that’s why he created a physical distance.

“They’re both smiling but Son’s is a bit of a fake smile really, feeling like Saka is trying to steal his limelight. Classic case of peacock and distancing behaviour. It’s basically a battle of the egos.”

Son and Saka have played against each other numerous times over the years and have been pictured embracing after North London Derbies in the past. However, there will be no love lost between the pair on Sunday as both sides look to build on fine starts to the season.

The old foes are separated by goal difference only, with Spurs surprisingly occupying second spot after five games following an excellent start to the Ange Postecoglou era. The fourth-place Gunners, meanwhile, are on the high after marking their return to the Champions League with a 4-0 rout of PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday night.
