‘Very happy’… 22-year-old Liverpool loanee just scored against Borussia Dortmund last night
Wed 20 December 2023 09:30

On-loan Liverpool defender Sepp van den Berg bagged his first goal of the season for Mainz last night.

After seeing last year ruined by injury, Van den Berg has quickly become a key player at Mainz. Starting 13 of the Bundesliga side’s 16 games so far and featuring from the bench in another two, the Dutchman’s getting the game time he needs.

Unfortunately, Mainz have struggled to get going, though. They currently sit just one place outside the relegation zone in the table.

Despite that, Jurgen Klopp’s old team secured a good result last night. Playing against Klopp’s other former side, Borussia Dortmund, Mainz took home a 1-1 draw, Van den Berg grabbing an equaliser just before half-time. And speaking to mainz05.de after the game, the 22-year-old said he was happy with the goal.

“I’m very proud of the team,” said the Netherlands U21 international. “The way we defended today was very good. Dortmund away, never easy. But yeah, I’m very happy with the goal.

“The way we defended, created chances in Dortmund against this team should give us confidence. [Now we have a] little break. Mentally especially, it’s been a tough, well, months to be honest.”

Van den Berg showing promise
As Liverpool scour the transfer market for new centre-back additions, they shouldn’t forget about Van den Berg.

Before he got injured at Schalke last season, the youngster had enjoyed an excellent spell in the Championship with Preston North End.

MORE LIVERPOOL STORIES
Turning 22 today (Happy Birthday Sepp!), Van den Berg is now at an age where his future needs to be considered.

If he isn’t good enough for the Liverpool first-team now, then the Reds should look to move him on.

Photo by Leon Kuegeler/Getty Images
There is an argument to be had that it would benefit Liverpool to bring Van den Berg back to Anfield in January. With Joel Matip out for the season, they could do with the cover.

But in reality, that wouldn’t make a great deal of sense. Although Mainz have been poor this season, Sepp will be learning a great deal from that. If he comes back to Liverpool he’d be getting the odd game here and there. It’s much better for the centre-back to be playing regularly at this stage.

At the end of the season though, you feel a decision needs to be made. If he can keep playing well, then perhaps Van den Berg will finally get a chance back home.

Given that it was a clash between his two old teams, you can imagine that Jurgen may have been tuned in last night. What better stage for the youngster to announce himself with his first goal of the season. Keep it up, Sepp!

Darwin Nunez is going through a lean patch and he is coming under fire once again for Liverpool.

The Liverpool forward wasn’t helped by the fact that his side recorded a goalless draw at home to Manchester United on Sunday, in what was a pretty poor showing in front of goal.

Michael Owen expressed how he is still ‘really surprised’ by how raw Darwin Nunez is and how the lack of basics let him down, as he told Premier League Productions.

But the former England striker admitted that the 24-year-old can also ‘take your breath away’.

That’s why he probably divides opinion because, whilst the player himself doesn’t know what he is going to do half of the time, you would still pay a lot of money to watch him in action.

This is Liverpool’s club-record transfer and his second season in England, but now the fans want to see him take that next step.

But as Jurgen Klopp’s side push for the Premier League title, and lose top spot following the weekend results, Michael Owen shared his thoughts on Darwin Nunez.

Darwin Nunez’s qualities
“That hasn’t changed and that’s him as a player,” said Owen about Nunez’s off-the-cuff style.

“That’s something I have said many a time that I would be very, very nervous saying what you talk about him now because there are a lot of basics in his game that need improving upon. He actually does a lot of the hard things well. Some of the things he does, they take your breath away. You are thinking ‘wow’, if you could just get your basics right.

“I am really surprised at how raw this lad is. A player of his age and to come for that money, all the rest of it, and still be so raw.

“However, he has attributes that he could develop, with good coaching, it could come good for him – he could make you look silly if you pour scorn on his game.”

Nunez started and was subbed on Sunday against Manchester United, but that doesn’t mean he will he won’t start against West Ham United tonight.

It’s League Cup action for the Reds and Klopp usually rotates his players in this competition.

And with Nunez needing some form, it’s probably best he is handed another start because it’s needed for all parties.

Although, if it were up to the club’s legendary figure, Phil Thompson, he would drop Nunez tonight and start Cody Gakpo.

Liverpool could solve their centre-back woes with a move to sign Sao Paolo starlet Lucas Beraldo in the January transfer window.

It was devastating to learn of Joel Matip’s ACL injury especially given his contract expires at the end of the season.

Jurgen Klopp may now move to sign a centre-back when the winter window opens in less than two weeks with Lucas Beraldo a potential option for the German.

According to Italian news outlet Tutto Juve, Liverpool, Arsenal and Juventus are all keen on signing him.

Zenit St. Petersburg had an €18 million offer rejected as Sao Paulo want €20 million. Leicester City are expected to make a bid that matches their demands.

If Liverpool make an offer that satisfies the Brazilian club, they could gazump Leicester and ensure they find a solution to the diminished depth at centre-back.

Their are question marks over Beraldo’s readiness for a move to the Premier League given he’s only 20 and plays in Brazil but, by all accounts, he’s a very talented young player and has made an impression on the Reds’ scouts.

Reports last month suggested Liverpool are in pole position to reach an agreement with Sao Paulo but with the January window now days away, a formal approach has yet to materialise.

The games continue to come thick and fast for Liverpool, with titanic Premier League clashes against Manchester United and Arsenal sandwiching a Carabao Cup quarter-final tie with West Ham United at Anfield on Wednesday evening. Jürgen Klopp has some difficult selection dilemmas to resolve.

Logic dictates that a game in the least important of the four competitions in which the Reds are entered is a time to rest some members of the squad. However, with the injury situation at the club seemingly worsening with every game, Klopp’s pool of rotation options continues to diminish.

As is customary ahead of Carabao Cup games, assistant manager Pep Lijnders took the pre-match press conference. He revealed that Ben Doak requires surgery having torn his lateral meniscus, an enormous pity for the youngster who would surely have received opportunities to play next month when Mohamed Salah is away at the Africa Cup of Nations. Doak would likely have been in the squad for the visit of West Ham too.

There was better news regarding Ryan Gravenberch, who was withdrawn early from the match against United on Sunday. “It was only DOMS so he’s fatigued, extra fatigue it means,” Lijnders explained. “So, we have to be careful but I think there is a possibility today that he can train. That’s really, really good news.”

However, Liverpool was already without six players prior to its last match and there remains no strong indication that any of the missing men will be back before the new year at the earliest. This puts the Reds’ depleted squad for Wednesday in sharp contrast to that of West Ham, who (per Premier Injuries) should only be missing Michail Antonio.

Liverpool want to beat Premier League rivals to sign Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Piero Hincapie after showing serious interest in the summer transfer window.

Joel Matip’s crushing ACL injury and resulting surgery means he will not play another game this season.

His contract expiring at the end of the campaign also means he may have played his last game for the Reds.

Schalke released him as a free agent in 2016 and since then, he has been a wonderful player for Liverpool even though his injury misfortune has prevented him from reaching his full potential.

While the Jurgen Klopp already had plans to replace the veteran defender, those may now be accelerated.

Transfer latest as Liverpool aim to beat Man City to Hincapie
Earlier this week, German transfer guru Florian Plettenberg reported that Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie is “not happy” with his role at Bayer Leverkusen.

Now, Caught Offside reports that Liverpool aim to “move ahead of Chelsea and Manchester City” in the race to secure his signature in transfer windows to come.

Jurgen Klopp is reportedly a “big fan” of the 21-year-old and Liverpool are “showing the strongest interest so far”.

Hincapie is under contract until 2027 and Leverkusen want to keep him for at least another year, however, his lack of game time could force the issue.

It will reportedly cost at least €70 million (£60m) to convince Xabi Alonso’s side to release him.

Liverpool were reportedly in “advanced” talks to sign Hincapie in the summer and could now return to sign the Ecuadorian centre-back to deal with Matip’s injury-enforced absence.

Liverpool also interested in Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong
Hincapie is not the only Leverkusen player attracting interest with Liverpool also keen on 20-year-old Florian Wirtz and 23-year-old Jeremie Frimpong.

Reports in late November suggested Liverpool are preparing a €90 million (£78M) bid for Wirtz although Daily Mail reporter Lewis Steele rubbished these claims.

He said: “There’s no concrete interest yet in Florian Wirtz but that doesn’t mean he is not on Liverpool’s radar. They look at a lot of players.”

Frimpong is also of interest, according to depor.com, who claimed last month that Liverpool and Chelsea “have decided to enter the bidding.”

Time will tell if this claim is worth its weight in gold.

‘I’m really not convinced’: Tim Sherwood says he’s not sure £70m Liverpool player is good enough

Charles Jones
Tue 19 December 2023 21:30, UK
For a brief moment, it looked as though Darwin Nunez was going to make this season his at Liverpool.

His heroic brace against Newcastle earlier this season looked like the perfect launching pad to make his name at Anfield, and he did kick on slightly afterwards.

However, he’s. now gone 10 games without a goal, and questions are starting to be asked once again.

Speaking on Premier League Productions, Tim Sherwood has been discussing Nunez after the Manchester United game on Sunday, and he says that he’s really not convinced that Nunez is good enough to be Liverpool’s number nine.

Photo by Clive Brunskill/Getty Images
Nunez not good enough
Sherwood shared what he thinks of the Uruguayan.

“Normally Mo Salah is a prolific scorer in this fixture especially, but just that wee bit of composure. Darwin Nunez I’m really not convinced about, I don’t think he’s of the quality to be a number nine for Liverpool, he’s not really a team man for me, no rotation,” Sherwood said.

Plenty to prove
There is a lot to like about Darwin Nunez as a footballer, but it has to be said that he has lots to prove.

At £70m, Liverpool would have every right to expect more from Nunez. No goals in his last 10 games is poor to say the least, and that lack of killer instinct in front of goal has been an ongoing problem.

For a long time, we’ve chalked it down to inexperience and claimed that Jurgen Klopp will be able to teach him how to improve that area of his game, but after 18 months in England, we have to start wondering whether or not this is a problem that has a solution.

Nunez needs to improve, otherwise, he will never truly live up to his pricetag.

The raw attributes are there, and we’re not willing to write Nunez off just yet.

Bayern Munich now open to selling ‘world-class’ player after links to Liverpool
Tue 19 December 2023 18:00
Dylan Walsh
Bayern Munich are reportedly open to selling Joshua Kimmich, with Liverpool linked with the Germany international.

The 28-year-old midfielder is regarded by many as one of the best in his position in world football, with Kimmich an established superstar for both Bayern and the German national team.

However, rumours have been circulating that Kimmich could leave the Bundesliga giants in 2024, with Liverpool one of the sides reportedly interested in signing the versatile midfielder.

And according to Bild, Bayern are now open to selling Kimmich, with the German side eager to upgrade their midfield next summer, which could result in the sale of the 28-year-old.

Praised by Julian Nagelsmann as a ‘world-class’ player, Kimmich would be quite the coup for many top sides if Bayern really do go through with the unthinkable and offload the midfielder.

And for Liverpool, the Reds should really consider a move for the German maestro, especially if the likes of Thiago Alcantara are due to leave Anfield in 2024 next summer.

MORE LIVERPOOL STORIES
Few midfielders in world football are as talented or as versatile as Kimmich, and Liverpool should really consider making a move for the Bayern star.

Whether or not the 28-year-old actually leaves is another question entirely, yet should the unlikely happen, Liverpool have to ensure they’re at the front of the queue for Kimmich.

Indeed, the Germany international has everything needed to thrive in the Premier League, with Kimmich likely open to working under Jurgen Klopp, as well.

And Liverpool should now be on standby for Kimmich’s potential departure, a move that would be seismic across the European football scene.

JURGEN KLOPP’S STRATEGY IN TRANSFER TALKS WITH FSG: LIVERPOOL’S JANUARY PLANS UNVEILED
Liverpool’s ongoing title chase in the Premier League has sparked much speculation about potential January reinforcements. Despite manager Jurgen Klopp’s earlier statements downplaying the likelihood of January transfers, recent developments suggest a shift in strategy, particularly in the defensive department.

The Reds have been dealt a significant blow with Joel Matip’s season-ending ACL injury, highlighting a concerning lack of depth in their centre-back options. This injury has undoubtedly impacted Liverpool’s Premier League ambitions, evidenced by their recent draw against Manchester United. Despite needing bolstering in defence and midfield to enhance their title chances, Liverpool are anticipated to have a relatively quiet winter window.

The club’s transfer activity is expected to be influenced by the progression of teams in European competitions. Clubs exiting at the group stage might be more amenable to negotiations. Liverpool is exploring various markets, with particular interest in the Portugese Primeira Liga.

POTENTIAL TRANSFERS AND FINANCIAL CONSIDERATIONS
Goncalo Inacio of Sporting Lisbon has emerged as a potential target, though his hefty release clause exceeding £50 million poses a challenge. Liverpool’s interest is paralleled by Arsenal, who are also eyeing Inacio. David Carmo of Porto is another name under consideration.

European prospects like Maxence Lacroix and Lloyd Kelly are being monitored, but doubts persist regarding their suitability for Liverpool’s needs. The club appears to lean towards a cost-effective or short-term defensive solution rather than a long-term investment this January.

MIDFIELD DYNAMICS AND KLOPP’S TACTICAL OUTLOOK
The injury to Alexis Mac Allister further complicates Liverpool’s midfield situation. However, bolstering this area in the upcoming transfer window seems unlikely. Klopp has expressed concerns about squad depth, particularly with the demanding schedule ahead, including a quarter-final clash against West Ham.

Klopp’s recent remarks post the United match reflect his pragmatic approach to the challenges ahead: “It’s December, it’s the toughest period of the year… We have to get through this, open our eyes in April and see where we are.”

KLOPP’S PERSPECTIVE ON THE TEAM’S RESILIENCE
Despite the draw against United and existing injury woes, Klopp remains optimistic about his team’s capabilities: “We have our injuries… but my boys today looked ready to give it a proper try.” This sentiment underscores Klopp’s belief in his squad’s resilience and adaptability, despite the constraints and challenges of the season.

Every Premier League Club’s Highest Earners: Man City Stars Lead; Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal Best-paid Players Revealed
Every Premier League club’s highest earners: Man City stars lead; Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal best-paid players revealed
Nathan Egerton 1 hour ago

Mohamed Salah for Liverpool, Kevin De Bruyne for Manchester City and Kai Havertz for Arsenal. TEAMtalk montage.

Having cemented its status as the world’s richest football league, the Premier League is unsurprisingly home to some of the highest-paid players in the world.

Every Premier League club now receives hundreds of millions in television money and average pay packets have subsequently skyrocketed in recent years

Using data from Capology, we’ve taken a look at the top five highest-earning players from each Premier League club.

Note: we’ve not included any players that are currently on loan at a Premier League side or are out on loan as their wage bill is often divided between two clubs.

Arsenal’s highest-paid players

1. Kai Havertz – £280,000-per-week
2. Gabriel Jesus – £265,000-per-week
3= Declan Rice – £240,000-per-week
3= Martin Odegaard – £240,000-per-week
5. Thomas Partey – £200,000-per-week

Havertz moved across London in the summer and got a slight pay rise, going from £250,000-per-week at Chelsea to £280,000-per-week at Arsenal.

The Gunners also broke their transfer record to sign Rice from West Ham United and they quadrupled his £60,000-a-week salary.

Aston Villa’s highest-paid players

1= Youri Tielemans – £150,000-per-week
1= Boubacar Kamara – £150,000-per-week
3= Ollie Watkins – £130,000-per-week
3= Moussa Diaby – £130,000-per-week
5= Emiliano Martinez – £120,000-per-week
5= Lucas Digne – £120,000-per-week
5= John McGinn – £120,000-per-week

While Villa didn’t have to pay a transfer fee for Tielemans or Kamara, they both signed lucrative contracts and are earning £150,000-a-week in wages.

Watkins has been instrumental to Villa’s success under Unai Emery and recently committed his long-term future to the club by penning a new contract, which took his wages to £130,000-per-week.

Bournemouth’s highest-paid players

1. Justin Kluivert – £80,000-per-week
2. Tyler Adams – £60,000-per-week
3= David Brooks – £50,000-per-week
3= Marcos Senesi – £50,000-per-week
3= Neto – £50,000-per-week
3= Dominic Solanke – £50,000-per-week
3= Ryan Christie – £50,000-per-week

Bournemouth are now owned by American billionaire Bill Foley, and he handed out lucrative contracts to Kluivert and Adams in the summer transfer window.

TEAMtalk recently revealed that they have also offered defender Lloyd Kelly a club-record deal in a bid to persuade him to sign a new contract.

Brentford’s highest-paid players

1. Ben Mee – £55,000-per-week
2. Mathias Jensen – £50,000-per-week
3. Bryan Mbeumo – £45,000-per-week
4= Kristoffer Ajer – £40,000-per-week
4= Frank Onyeka – £40,000-per-week

Brentford are widely regarded to be among the best-run and most financially sustainable clubs in England and it’s easy to see why.

They have a tightly controlled wage bill and Ivan Toney – who has been linked with Arsenal and Chelsea – is earning just £20,000-per-week.

Brighton’s highest-paid players

1. Adam Lallana – £90,000-per-week
2= Lewis Dunk – £80,000-per-week
2= Kaoru Mitoma – £80,000-per-week
4. Pascal Gross – £65,000-per-week
5. James Milner – £60,000-per-week

Lallana joined Brighton on a free transfer in the summer of 2020 and is the top earner among the permanent members of their squad.

But Ansu Fati is on loan with the Seagulls this season and they are reportedly paying 80 per cent of his Barcelona wages, making them liable for around £128,000-per-week.

Brighton attackers Kaoru Mitoma and Ansu Fati
Burnley’s highest-paid players

1= Josh Brownhill – £45,000-per-week
1= Jack Cork – £45,000-per-week
3= Jay Rodriquez – £40,000-per-week
3= Josh Cullen – £40,000-per-week
3= Sander Berge – £40,000-per-week

Brownhill and Cork are the highest-paid players at Burnley, but they are both out of contract at the end of the season and the former has been linked with Wolves and Leicester City.

Chelsea’s highest-paid players

1. Raheem Sterling – £325,000-per-week
2. Reece James – £250,000-per-week
3= Wesley Fofana – £200,000-per-week
3= Ben Chilwell – £200,000-per-week
5. Christopher Nkunku – £195,000-per-week

The first signing of the Todd Boehly era, Sterling joined Chelsea from Manchester City in 2022 and signed a five-year contract worth around £325,000-a-week.

Romelu Lukaku was also earning £325,000-a-week at Stamford Bridge, but he took a pay cut in order to secure a loan move to Roma.

Crystal Palace’s highest-paid players

1= Michael Olise – £100,000-per-week
1= Eberechi Eze – £100,000-per-week
1= Dean Henderson – £100,000-per-week
4. Odsonne Edouard – £90,000-per-week
5= Nathaniel Clyne – £80,000-per-week
5= Joachim Andersen – £80,000-per-week

After rejecting a move to Chelsea in the summer, Olise stayed at Palace and was given a new four-year contract worth £100,000-per-week.

Henderson – who joined the club from Manchester United in the summer transfer window – and Eze are also on the same salary as Olise.

Everton’s highest-paid players

1. Abdoulaye Doucoure – £130,000-per-week
2. Jordan Pickford – £125,000-per-week
3. Andre Gomes – £112,308-per-week
4= Dominic Calvert-Lewin – £100,000-per-week
4= Amadou Onana – £100,000-per-week
4= James Tarkowski – £100,000-per-week
4= Dele Alli – £100,000-per-week

Doucoure scored the goal that secured Everton’s Premier League survival at the end of the 2022/23 season and has since usurped Pickford as the highest-paid player at Goodison Park.

Andre Gomes and Dele Alli are yet to make a first-team appearance in 2023/24 and they are both out of contract at the end of the season.

Fulham’s highest-paid players

1. Raul Jimenez – £100,000-per-week
2= Willian – £90,000-per-week
2= Bernd Leno – £90,000-per-week
4= Joao Palhinha – £80,000-per-week
4= Alex Iwobi – £80,000-per-week

After selling Aleksandar Mitrovic in the summer, Fulham signed Jimenez from Wolves and gave him a two-year deal worth £100,000-per-week.

Palhinha got a significant pay rise at Craven Cottage after his proposed move to Bayern Munich fell through on transfer deadline day.

Liverpool’s highest-paid players

1. Mohamed Salah – £350,000-per-week
2. Virgil Van Dijk – £220,000-per-week
3. Thiago Alcantara – £200,000-per-week
4. Trent Alexander-Arnold – £180,000-per-week
5= Alisson – £150,000-per-week
5= Ryan Gravenberch – £150,000-per-week
5= Alexis Mac Allister – £150,000-per-week

Salah signed a new long-term contract with Liverpool in 2022 and his wages went from £200,000-per-week to £350,000-per-week, making him the highest-paid player in the club’s illustrious history.

But that pales in comparison to the £2.45million-a-week wage that Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal are reportedly willing to offer the Egypt international.

Luton Town’s highest-paid players

1. Ryan Giles – £35,000-per-week
2= Ross Barkley – £30,000-per-week
2= Tahith Chong – £30,000-per-week
2= Jacob Brown – £30,000-per-week
2= Marvelous Nakamba – £30,000-per-week

Luton Town have the lowest wage bill in the Premier League and Mohamed Salah receives at least 10 times more than their highest earner.

Manchester City’s highest-paid players

1. Kevin De Bruyne – £400,000-per-week
2. Erling Haaland – £375,000-per-week
3= Jack Grealish – £300,000-per-week
3= Bernardo Silva – £300,000-per-week
5. John Stones – £250,000-per-week

Widely regarded as one of the best players in the world, De Bruyne is the highest-paid player in the Premier League and earns £20.8million-per-year.

He’s closely followed by teammate Haaland, who reportedly has a series of bonuses in his contract that could see his weekly wage surge beyond the £850,000 mark.

Manchester United’s highest-paid players

1. Casemiro – £350,000-per-week
2. Raphael Varane – £340,000-per-week
3. Marcus Rashford – £300,000-per-week
4= Jadon Sancho – £250,000-per-week
4= Mason Mount – £250,000-per-week
4= Anthony Martial – £250,000-per-week

United have the highest wage bill in the Premier League in 2023/24, but they are looking to offload some of their biggest earners.

Casemiro, Varane and Sancho have all been linked with moves away from Old Trafford while Martial is out of contract at the end of the season.

Newcastle United’s highest-paid players

1. Bruno Guimaraes – £160,000-per-week
2= Alexander Isak – £120,000-per-week
2= Kieran Trippier – £120,000-per-week
4. Matt Targett – £100,000-per-week
5. Sven Botman – £90,000-per-week

Guimaraes helped Newcastle finish in the top four in 2022/23 and has since signed a new long-term contract, which increased his salary by £40,000-per-week.

Sandro Tonali is on £120,000-per-week, but the Telegraph claim that Newcastle are exploring the possibility of reducing his wages after he was handed a 10-month ban for gambling breaches.

Nottingham Forest’s highest-paid players

1= Callum Hudson-Odoi – £80,000-per-week
1= Felipe – £80,000-per-week
1= Morgan Gibbs-White – £80,000-per-week
1= Chris Wood – £80,000-per-week
5. Ibrahim Sangare – £75,000-per-week

There is a four-way tie to be Forest’s highest earner as Gibbs-White, Felipe, Wood and Hudson-Odoi are all on £80,000-per-week.

Divock Origi is spending the 2023/24 season on loan at the City Ground, but it remains unknown how much of his £120,000-per-week salary the Reds are covering.

Sheffield United

1. Rhian Brewster – £35,000-per-week
2= Vinicius Souza – £30,000-per-week
2= Gustavo Hamer – £30,000-per-week
2= Anel Ahmedhodzic – £30,000-per-week
2= Tom Davies – £30,000-per-week
2= Cameron Archer – £30,000-per-week

Since joining Sheffield United from Liverpool in 2020, Brewster has struggled to justify his £35,000-per-week wages and has scored just five goals for the club.

Tottenham’s highest-paid players

1. Son Heung-min – £190,000-per-week
2. Ivan Perisic – £180,000-per-week
3. James Maddison – £170,000-per-week
4. Cristian Romero – £165,000-per-week
5. Dejan Kulusevski – £110,000-per-week

Following Harry Kane’s move to Bayern Munich in the summer, Son Heuing-min is now the highest-paid player at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

He is closely followed by Perisic, who is out of contract at the end of the season and is currently recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

West Ham United’s highest-paid players

1. Lucas Paqueta – £150,000-per-week
2= Danny Ings – £125,000-per-week
2= Kurt Zouma – £125,000-per-week
4= Alphonse Areola – £120,000-per-week
4= Jarrod Bowen – £120,000-per-week

Despite being linked with a move to Manchester City in the summer, Paqueta ultimately remained at the London Stadium.

TEAMtalk understands that West Ham are preparing a contract offer for the Brazil international and his wages will rise from a base salary of £150,000-per-week to over £200,000-per-week.

Man City linked West Ham midfielder Lucas Paqueta

Wolves’ highest-paid players

1. Pablo Sarabia – £90,000-per-week
2= Nelson Semedo – £80,000-per-week
2= Fabio Silva – £80,000-per-week
4= Matheus Cunha – £60,000-per-week
4= Daniel Podence – £60,000-per-week

Wolves’ top five has changed a lot in recent months as Raul Jimenez, Joao Moutinho, Goncalo Guedes and Matheus Nunes all left Molineux in the summer.

Sarabia is the only player from last season’s top five who is still at the club, but he has struggled to cement his place in the starting Xl.

Liverpool confirm hammer injury blow as forward set for surgery – ‘that’s not a good one’
Ben Doak has been added to the Liverpool treatment table.

Ben Doak is set for a prolonged period on the Liverpool sidelines.

The winger has torn his lateral meniscus, which means he requires surgery. Doak suffered his setback when limping off in the 28th minute of the under-21s’ 2-1 win over Chelsea last weekend.

The 18-year-old has been on the periphery of Jurgen Klopp’s side throughout the season, making a total of six appearances. Doak may have featured in tomorrow night’s Carabao Cup quarter-final against West Ham – but now he is forced to undergo the knife and faces a lengthy lay-off.

Assistant manager Pep Lijnders said: “That’s not a good one. He tore his lateral meniscus, which needs surgery. That one will take [a] longer time. He is young, he is a fit guy, he is a positive guy so for sure he will come back stronger and we need him to come back with the same fire he has with the ball, how he was. He can take time and we will wait for him.”

Liverpool vs Arsenal Prediction-Head To Head-Lineup-Injury-Update-Jurgen Klopp Announced Sacked Today

LIVERPOOL FC TRANSFER RUMOURS
PSG ‘close’ to agreement for Liverpool transfer target

6 MINS AGO
ANDY HEADSPEATH
Paris Saint-Germain are close to an agreement for Liverpool-linked Lucas Beraldo, according to one report.

The 20-year-old defender had been named as a possible target for the Reds ahead of the transfer window re-opening next month, as Jurgen Klopp contends with mounting injury issues.

Liverpool had already earmarked at least one defensive addition for 2024. However, the season-ending injury to Joel Matip has only furthered the need for reinforcements at the back.

The Reds have been linked with a number of centre backs ahead of January and had even been named as the favourites in the race for Sao Paulo’s Beraldo, who has been impressing in South America.

However, according to Santi Aouna, it is actually PSG who will complete a winter deal for the Brazil youth international.

The Foot Mercato journalist wrote on X: “PSG is confident of completing the arrival of Lucas Beraldo for 20+5M € bonus. Close agreement between the parties. Possible medical examination next week.”

Aouna adds that PSG are also in advanced negotiations with Corinthians for Gabriel Moscardo, an 18-year-old midfielder who has also been loosely linked to Liverpool in recent weeks.

While Beraldo may now be off the table, whether Liverpool make any signings next month remains to be seen.

Jurgen Klopp has publicly played down Liverpool’s chances bringing in a replacement for the injured Matip. However, another report claims that the Reds are open to deals ‘if the price is right’.

Goncalo Inacio (Sporting CP) is another centre back who has been regularly linked, while Piero Hincapie (Leverkusen) and Leny Yoro (Lille) too have been touted as potential targets.

Anfield Watch understands that revamping the defence is the priority for the Reds in 2024, though a big-money arrival may be more likely in the summer.

Liverpool do have recent form for a January deal, despite Klopp’s comments, having signed Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo in the previous two years.

Liverpool’s oldest Premier League players ever

Egypt goalkeeper Essam El-Hadary made headlines across the globe on Monday when he became the oldest player to ever feature at a World Cup finals.

At 45 years and 161 days old, the Pharaohs goalkeeper broke the record of Colombia’s Faryd Mondragon (43 years and three days) and even rolled back the years to make a stunning penalty save.

El-Hadary’s heroics and Mohamed Salah’s opening goal couldn’t prevent Egypt losing 2-1 to Saudi Arabia, but the veteran’s exploits lit up social media and got us thinking about the experienced heads that have graced the Anfield pitch over the years.

So, as a bit of topical entertainment, we’ve put together an XI of the oldest ever players to turn out for the Reds in the Premier League.

Goalkeeper

Paul Jones (36 years, 247 days)

Remarkably, goalkeeper Paul Jones didn’t even make his Liverpool debut until he was 36.

Signed on loan from Southampton as emergency cover for injured duo Jerzy Dudek and Chris Kirkland, he played just two games for the Reds.

He became LFC’s oldest post-war debutant at 36 years and 240 days old when he kept a clean sheet against Aston Villa and then beat Bruce Grobbelaar’s record as the club’s most senior stopper by 138 days in his final game against Tottenham Hotspur.

Defenders

Sami Hyypia (35 years, 229 days)

‘Big Sami’ bid a tearful farewell to Anfield in May 2009 when he played the last of his 464 games for the club. Wearing the captain’s armband for the final five minutes of a 3-1 win against Tottenham, he was cheered off the pitch as he signed off at the age of 35 years and 229 days.

Among the finest centre-backs ever to wear a red shirt, he was one of the heroes of Istanbul in 2005 – adding the Champions League trophy to the UEFA Cup, League Cup and FA Cup he won during a decade at Liverpool.

Jamie Carragher (35 years, 111 days)

Carragher’s Liverpool journey began back in October 1996, when he signed professional terms following a successful apprenticeship, and ended 17 years and seven major trophies later.

The one-club centre-back Carragher ranks second on Liverpool’s all-time appearances list with 737 and was given a standing ovation in his final match against Queens Park Rangers at Anfield in May 2013, aged 35 years and 11 days old.

Kolo Toure (35 years, 33 days)

Signed from Manchester City in 2013 following the retirement of the Carragher, centre-back Kolo Toure became a hugely popular figure during his three-year spell with Liverpool.

Already in the ‘veteran’ bracket when he joined Brendan Rodgers’ side, his experienced head helped the club reach the Europa League final in 2016 – his final game for the club.

However, the Ivory Coast defender’s last Premier League match had come a week earlier when he was 35 years and 33 days old.

Mark Wright (34 years, 50 days)

Injury brought a premature end to Mark Wright’s football career but the centre-back did manage to play on until he was 34 years and 50 days old – playing his 210th and final match for the Reds in September 1997.

One of England’s best performers during the World Cup in 1990, Liverpool boss Graeme Souness had signed the centre-back to become Liverpool’s defensive lynchpin and he lifted the FA Cup as captain in 1992.

Midfielders

Gary McAllister (37 years, 136 days)

Cultured midfielder McAllister was already 35 years old when he signed for the Reds in 2000 and the Scot holds the record as Liverpool’s oldest ever Premier League player.

A few eyebrows were raised when Gerard Houllier initially snapped him up, but McAllister’s quality was instantly obvious and he was integral to winning the 2001 treble of FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup, playing in all three finals.

He featured in his final match for Liverpool – a 5-0 win over Ipswich at Anfield in May 2002 – at the age of 37 years and 136 days.

Steven Gerrard (34 years, 358 days)

Regarded by many as Liverpool’s finest ever player, Steven Gerrard called time on his 710-game Anfield career in May 2015 to take up a new challenge with Los Angeles Galaxy in the MLS.

He was 34 years and 358 days old when he played his final match for the club and notched the last of his 186 goals.

An Academy graduate, Gerrard made his senior debut in 1998, was made club captain in 2003 and won virtually every trophy on offer during 17 remarkable years at his boyhood club.

John Barnes (33 years, 185 days)

Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish paid £900,000 to bring John Barnes to Anfield in 1987 and the England international swept up four trophies – including two league titles – and the 1988 PFA Player of the Year award during a decade at Anfield.

A gracefully devastating left winger during his heyday, Barnes was moved infield as an intelligent playmaker in his later years and played his final game for Liverpool, against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough in May 1997, at the age of 33 years and 185 days old.

Strikers

Ian Rush (34 years, 197 days)

Liverpool’s all-time leading goalscorer Ian Rush netted 346 times in 660 games over two stints at the club, with his final goal coming in his final Premier League game for the Reds in May 1996.

Handed the captain’s armband by manager Roy Evans, Rush fired home aged 34 years and 197 days to secure a 2-2 draw against Manchester City at Maine Road.

Rickie Lambert (33 years, 96 days)

England international Lambert flourished relatively late in his career and completed a dream move to boyhood club Liverpool aged 32 following a fairytale rise through the English leagues and selection for the 2014 World Cup.

The Scouse striker, who had been at the Reds’ Academy as a youngster but was released at 15 years old, made 36 appearances in his single season with the Reds, bowing out in the same game as Steven Gerrard, aged 33 years and 96 days old.

Craig Bellamy (32 years, 305 days)

Never one to settle down, fiery forward Craig Bellamy enjoyed two spells as a Liverpool player.

The first, from 2006 to 2007, when he scored and set up John Arne Riise in a 2-1 Champions League success over reigning European champions Barcelona at Camp Nou, and the second from 2011 to 2012, when he scored a semi-final winner en route to lifting the League Cup.

He clocked up the last of his 79 appearances for the Reds against Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium, aged 32 years and 305 days old.
