‘SERIOUSLY’: DERMOT GALLAGHER REACTS TO LIVERPOOL STATEMENT ON VAR CONTROVERSY

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has given his reaction on Sky Sports News to the VAR controversy in the Premier League match between Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur and Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium over the weekend.

Dermot Gallagher is seemingly confused by Liverpool’s statement on the VAR decision that went against them in the Premier League game against Tottenham Hotspur in regard to the goal from Luis Diaz.

The former Premier League referee has said on Sky Sports News (11:33am, October 2, 2023) that he does not understand why Liverpool have put out such a strong statement about the VAR controversy.

Gallagher has noted that all referees make mistakes.

The former Premier League referee said when asked about Liverpool’s statement: “I don’t understand what it means, to be honest, sorry.

“I seriously don’t.

“It was a mistake. Referees make mistakes all the time.

“It was a mistake.

“It’s a very, very bad mistake, no doubt about that, but it’s a mistake.

“It was not done deliberate.”

Liverpool statement on VAR controversy against Tottenham Hotspur

As we all know by now, the goal that Luis Diaz scored for Liverpool against Tottenham Hotspur was incorrectly ruled out.

Diaz was deemed offside by on-pitch officials, but the Colombia international winger was not.

As reported by ESPN, VAR knew that it was not offside, but what he failed to note was that the on-pitch referee thought that it was.

VAR Darren England thought that he was checking a goal rather than a disallowed goal.

England thought that the on-pitch referee had given a goal.

He was obviously wrong.

In a lengthy statement on their official website, Liverpool have expressed his disappointment at the decision.

The former Premier League and UEFA Champions League winners are simply not happy at just an apology, suggesting that they could take further actions.

The statement added: “That such failings have already been categorised as ‘significant human error’ is also unacceptable.

“Any and all outcomes should be established only by the review and with full transparency.

“This is vital for the reliability of future decision-making as it applies to all clubs with learnings being used to make improvements to processes in order to ensure this kind of situation cannot occur again.

“In the meantime, we will explore the range of options available, given the clear need for escalation and resolution.”

Burnley boss Vincent Kompany weighs in on VAR following controversy during Tottenham v Liverpool game

The technology failed to overturn an incorrect offside decision during Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat to Tottenham on Saturday.

PGMOL, the governing body for referees, has said the decision to disallow Luis Diaz’s goal was “a significant human error”.

Still images of the incident showed Tottenham defender Cristian Romero playing Diaz onside.

The disallowed goal came when the match was level but with Jurgen Klopp’s side down to 10 men after Curtis Jones had been controversially sent off following VAR intervention.

The VAR officials were stood down from duty for the rest of the weekend.

In a statement, Liverpool said that explanation is “unacceptable” and called for a “review with full transparency”.

The Reds also said they will “explore the range of options available given the clear need for escalation and resolution”.

Burnley have been on the wrong end of a VAR call themselves this season when Lyle Foster’s strike was ruled out during the 1-1 draw against Nottingham Forest, when Sander Berge was harshly adjudged to have handled the ball during the build-up.

When asked if he’s lost trust in the technology ahead of Tuesday night’s rearranged fixture against Luton Town, Kompany said: “I think we’ve gone down a road now where this is it, we’ve got to make this the best we can.

“It’s tough because we’ve also had the same situation with VAR this season and when you’re on the wrong end of it, it really hurts.

“But I still think the approach of being open about this…I want to maybe discuss the other side of it, which is every time you make a decision in this country you get an extensive report about it, be open about it, admitting to mistakes and apologising for it and as much as you have no understanding when it happens to you, I still think it’s the right way to go about it.

“From my side, I prefer to talk about us making it the best we can and getting it right, understanding what we need for football. Rather than pointing out individuals because they’re doing the best they can and we all obviously make mistakes.”
