Klopp announced on Friday that he will leave his post as Liverpool manager at the end of the season. The Reds are looking for options to take his place and Correio da Manha reports that Amorim has emerged as one of the possible candidates.

Liverpool will have to pay around €20 million to Sporting in order to get the 39-year-old from the Portuguese side but that figure is said to be no major obstacle for the Merseyside team. The coach’s current contract runs until the summer of 2026.

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has challenged his team-mates to make sure they give Jurgen Klopp the “farewell he definitely deserves” this season.

Klopp announced a shock decision to leave Anfield at the end of the campaign after nine years at the club, admitting he no longer has the energy levels required to do the job properly next season.

The news became public less than 48 hours after the Reds had booked their place in next month’s Carabao Cup final with a 3-2 aggregate win over Fulham at Craven Cottage and Klopp will host his close friend David Wagner and his Norwich City side in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Sunday.

With the Premier League leaders in possession of a five-point advantage at the summit and with a last-16 Europa League tie to come in March, Van Dijk says he and his colleagues will ensure Klopp has the sort of end to the campaign that will be fitting for a manager who has lifted every top-level trophy available in the last five years.

In an interview with Liverpoolfc.com, Van Dijk became the first Reds player to speak publicly about his manager’s end-of-season exit plan and admits it is a difficult prospect to imagine.

“It’s a hard one to take, because the manager means so much for us, to me, to the club, to the whole Premier League I think,” Van Dijk said. “But he made the decision for him and his family. It was always going to be a tough one and it was definitely the case.

“I think it will be a collective feeling and like I said already, I didn’t have any feeling so far that that wasn’t the case. I think [Klopp’s decision] just should give you that extra boost, that special feeling that let’s make the most out of it.

“I think that feeling was already [there], like I said before, since pre-season that we wanted to make things right from last year and we have to keep that going.

“As a fan and as a supporter of the football club, it will also feel that way. You want to be there and you want to be there for the team, be there for the manager. Let’s make the rest of the season a special one so he can have the farewell that he definitely deserves.”

Van Dijk added: “I think for me personally, like I said, my mindset is making sure our goals that we have and our targets that we are trying to achieve don’t get disrupted by the news.

“That’s what the manager wants as well. We want to achieve a lot of things and carry on with the form we have, with the way we are playing, with the players who are doing so well and keeping that confidence.

“That’s why we have to keep going. Like I said, that’s what the manager wants as well and we have to block out the noise from the outside world, tunnel vision and focus on hopefully achieving success in these months for the manager at the club.”

We are in the final days of the January transfer window but Liverpool are linked with more managers than players after Klopp announced his eventual exit yesterday.

According to reports going on in the media, the Merseysiders are looking at a number of options to replace the German manager and one of them is Portuguese boss, Ruben Amorim.

News – From AZ – £98,000 a week manager clear to agree Liverpool move

As per today’s version of Correio da Manha (news image provided below), the Sporting CP boss is in ‘Liverpool’s sights’ as they look to hire a new coach for the next campaign.

The renowned Portuguese news source have mentioned that Amorim is one of the candidates shortlisted by the Anfield club to replace Klopp.

To secure his services before the expiry of his contract, it is reported that Liverpool have to pay a fee of £17m (20 million euros).

Amorim’s current deal with the Lions will expire in the summer of 2026 and it has a clause of £17m set for the clubs in ‘England’.

In Portugal, the 39-year-old has already won two League Cups, a Super Cup and a Primeira Liga title with Sporting CP.

At the moment, the Lisbon club are leading the Liga Nos table and the former Braga manager is focused on winning the title again.

Correio da Manha claim Amorim’s work at Sporting has ‘not gone unnoticed’. Apart from the accolades, his ability to ‘promote’ youngsters and the ‘attractive football’ have been highlighted ‘internationally’.

‘Honestly’: Fabrizio Romano shares how the Liverpool squad found out Jurgen Klopp was leaving

Jurgen Klopp is leaving Liverpool.

The German dropped the bombshell of all bombshells on Friday morning, leaving many fans, pundits and journalists alike in absolute shock.

Klopp says that his decision to leave was communicated to the Liverpool owners months ago, but, by the sounds of things, his playing squad were none-the-wiser before yesterday.

Indeed, speaking on the Here We Go podcast, Fabrizio Romano has been discussing Klopp’s decision, and he says that even the players weren’t anticipating this announcement, claiming that many players within the team were only told about the decision just before the official announcement went out.

Romano shared how Liverpool found out about Klopp’s impending departure.

“It was not expected. It was not expected honestly. Not only from a journalistic point of view, but in the dressing room, many players were only told about this thing in the morning. Early morning the message came into the dressing room and then it was released by Liverpool in the official statement,’ Romano said.

Bombshell
This must’ve come as a massive shock to the Liverpool squad, and we’re very interested to see how the team react to this news.

This could go one of two ways, either the team could rally round in order to give the manager the best possible send off and try to win as much as possible, or it could ultimately demoralise the team as they know that everything is about to change.

Make no mistake about it, Klopp’s departure is the most seismic event in Liverpool’s recent history, and there are so many aspects to this story that could change the way Liverpool operate in years to come.

What happens next remains to be seen, but Liverpool’s players ned to find a way to regroup and continue their good form after this news.

Jurgen Klopp is leaving Liverpool at the end of the season. That was the big news that came out on Friday morning, sending shockwaves through the Premier League.

The German has won everything there is to win at Anfield and will leave the club as a legend, no matter what happens at the end of the current campaign. it is a campaign in which Liverpool could win four trophies, with a Carabao Cup final vs Chelsea to come next month and the knockout stages of the Europa League.

That’s added on to the Reds being five points clear at the top of the Premier League table and an FA Cup fourth round clash with Norwich this weekend. It could be a big second half of the season to round of Klopp’s nine-year tenure.

But, away from the potential joy, there will be a number of clubs in the Premier League who could look at this as an opportunity to capitalise on upheaval at Liverpool. Klopp may not be the only one leaving the club in the summer.

football.london takes a look at the players who could follow him out of the exit door…

Mohamed Salah
The Egyptian King has regularly been linked with a move away from Anfield. Towards the end of last season, Salah said about Klopp: “We have a good relationship since I came here. We’ve played together for five or six years so we know each other very well now. We appreciate each other and we respect each other which is the most important thing.”

Saudi Arabia came calling last summer, but could not prise Salah away. They are sure to be interested again this summer, but Chelsea would surely like to rectify the mistake they made in letting Salah go, while any other Premier League club would be desperate to have him.

Salah’s contract expires in 2025 and could leave to secure some money for Liverpool, before he is available on a free the following summer.

Virgil van Dijk
The names of potential departures do not get any smaller do they? One of the best centre-backs the Premier League has ever seen could also follow Klopp out of the Anfield exit gates.

Van Dijk has been at Anfield for six years and has enjoyed his most successful time as a player with Klopp. The Dutchman’s contract also expires in 2025 so is another who could be cashed in on before he leaves on a free.

Arsenal have had their defensive issues in the past and van Dijk would be a hell of a signing.

Trent Alexander-Arnold
It’s fair to say that Klopp has made Alexander-Arnold what he is today. The full-back came through the ranks at Liverpool and has made his name for his boyhood club.

Leaving Liverpool would likely be a wrench for the 25-year-old but he may see the time as being right for a new challenge with Klopp gone. Has had his critics over the years, but his talent is undoubted and another who could leave for free in 2025 so Liverpool could be tempted to sell.

Joel Matip
The defender is out of contract this summer and there has been no indication over a new deal. However, he has said he does not intend to leave.

Speaking earlier this season, he said: “Here in Liverpool, with these absolutely top conditions, you can’t just leave.”

But with Klopp upping and leaving, Matip may think differently come the summer, particularly if there has been no movement over a new contract.

Thiago Alcantara
Was seen as a big signing for Liverpool and has shown flashes of his brilliance in what has been an injury-curtailed spell on the north west. He is also out of contract this summer and looks all-but certain to leave Anfield for pastures new when the season ends.

Given his injury history, he would be a gamble for any club to take on, but he has undoubted quality in abundance.

When it comes to transfers in the Premier League, few have as impressive a track record as the one boasted by Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool in recent years.

The Reds have concluded an array of astute deals under the German’s premiership – which will end in the summer – with the likes of Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Sadio Mane all impressing after arriving for relatively modest sums.

And even Klopp’s premium purchases like Virgil van Dijk and Allison signed for £75million and £56m respectively, have managed to live up to the hype and establish themselves as cornerstones of the club’s recent success under the former Borussia Dortmund coach.

Klopp has always had a big say in the comings and goings at Anfield and has rightly received plenty of plaudits for the impressive work in the summer transfer window that has propelled his refreshed team – dubbed Liverpool 2.0 – into title contention in what will be his final campaign.

As well as setting out specific criteria before signing any new players, Klopp revealed back in 2020 that there is an unwritten agreement with all new signings which demands that they give everything – and in turn, Klopp gives them everything he has back.

“When we have this agreement, everything was fine, everything was good, that’s why we talked, that’s why we signed you, but from now on I expect much more,” Klopp previously revealed to Liverpool club media.

“For that, he gets more than he ever got before: more attention, more education, hopefully better training – that’s a clear agreement. If he is not happy with one of these parts, he can come to me and tell me, ‘You told me that, it didn’t happen’.

“If I am not happy with one of the things he agreed, I will go to him and tell him, ‘You said this and that, you didn’t do that – why?’ This is a clear deal, but a handshake deal, not written down.”

The opportunity to work with one of the game’s elite coaches has paid dividends for Liverpool in the market. The likes of Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai were both lured to Anfield in the summer and have already made a significant impact on the pitch.

After ending Liverpool’s agonising 30-year top-flight title drought in 2020, Klopp went agonisingly close to landing an unprecedented quadruple in the 2021/22 campaign.

And after a disappointing season last year, Klopp and Liverpool are back on track to challenge for major honours – he’s clearly holding up his end of the bargain with said transfer agreement.

Jurgen Klopp and his coaching staff as well as sporting director Jorg Schmadtke will leave Liverpool.

Liverpool have confirmed Jorg Schmadtke will leave his post as sporting director next month.

Schmadtke took up the role in the summer after the shock exit of Julian Ward, who spent only a year as the much-vaunted Michael Edwards’ successor.

Schmadtke helped the Reds negotiate a busy transfer window, with Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch arriving while Jordan Henderson and Fabinho were both sold to the Saudi Pro League.

The German signed a short-term deal with Liverpool. But with Jurgen Klopp announcing the bombshell news that he will depart from the Anfield hot seat at the end of the season – along with assistant managers Pep Lijnders and Peter Krawietz and elite development coach Vitor Mato. But Schmadtke’s exit will be at the end of the January transfer window.

Fenway Sports Group president Mike Gordon said: “We would like to place on record our gratitude to Jorg for the important role he has played since joining Liverpool last summer.

“He has made a valuable contribution, both in terms of the support he provided to Jürgen Klopp and the assistance and guidance given to our outstanding football operations department.

“As well as departing with our appreciation for his efforts, we would also like to take this opportunity to offer Jorg and his family our very best wishes for the future.”

Liverpool have been the talk of the footballing world today, after Jurgen Klopp’s big announcement.

The Reds manager of more than eight years is set to call time on his stay on Merseyside, with an end of the season exit now impending.

It was incredible news that not many at all will have seen coming. And according to The Telegraph, Liverpool’s ability to keep it as such as a surprise has gone down well in footballing circles.

They claim that there has been ‘surprise and admiration’ within the football world at how the Reds kept things so quiet with Klopp.

Liverpool’s ability to ‘execute such a smooth announcement’ of news of this magnitude is also said to have won them some fans.

Klopp reportedly informed Reds owners FSG of his intention to leave back in November. Until today, nobody else appears to have been in the know.

In this day and age of everything in football being known before it happens, we’re not used to receiving such a shock like this.

But, truly, Jurgen’s announcement today will have taken the whole fanbase – and the rest of the world – by complete surprise.

For anyone who is not connected with Liverpool, perhaps this is a good day. Klopp has become less popular with opposition fans recently for rivals of the club, it no doubt helps their own prospects of toppling the Reds.

But for anyone of a Liverpool persuasion, to get news like that straight out of the blue will have been gut-wrenching.

Had there been some indication that Klopp was about to walk, it would have been easier to deal with. But the boss appeared in-front of the press as normal only yesterday.

The only one inkling that something could be wrong is that the press conference had been slated for a day earlier than usual. As we now know, that was to make way for today’s ‘special’ briefing from Jurgen.

Still, no one could have foreseen that. If you’d suggested it, you’d have been laughed out of the room.

So, yes, you do have to commend the secrecy with which Liverpool and Klopp operated in here. However, a heads up would have been nice. The pain is real.

The news that no Liverpool fan wanted to hear has been announced this afternoon.

As per liverpoolfc.com, Jurgen Klopp will step down as Reds manager at the end of the current season. With a contract still to run for two more years, no one saw this coming.

As a result, Liverpool are now going to have to begin the impossible job of finding Klopp’s successor at Anfield.

There are a number of clear candidates, with Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso being the obvious front-runner.

But speaking on TalkSPORT in the wake of the news this morning, presenter Jim White put forward another possible name.

“One might think maybe Pep Lijnders,” suggested the presenter. “With his knowledge of Klopp and his close association with Klopp makes himself a candidate to take over from Klopp.”

Well this was not the news we were expecting on this Thursday morning. Just how do you digest this?

Klopp’s reasons for leaving appear to be a case of burnout more than anything. It’s a surprise after the manager looked so reenergised ahead of this season. But what can you do.

The one silver lining is of course that Jurgen has given Liverpool plenty of time to find his successor.

You could imagine that the boss himself may well be involved in the hiring of the man to fill his enormous shoes.

If that is the case, then you can see Klopp putting the case forward for Lijnders. He’s been by his side at Liverpool for years now and knows the club and the players inside out.

The Dutchman even holds press conferences for the Carabao Cup these days and is well versed in the demands of the job.

But you can’t help but feel that the position might be a little too big for Pep. Instead, many supporters’ choice would have to be Alonso. In fact, with the best of respect to Pep, the Spaniard has to be the choice.

In the meantime, the long goodbye for Jurgen is going to be so very emotional. Danke for everything boss, YNWA. Now, there’s a league title to win.

Chris Sutton has admitted he’s been proved very wrong by a Liverpool player this season after he previously questioned whether the 32-year-old was past his best.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are still challenging on all four fronts this term and one of the main reasons behind the Reds’ solid performances has been the fine form of Virgil Van Dijk.

The Dutchman was handed the armband in the summer following Jordan Henderson’s departure to Saudi Arabia and the central defender has been at his world-class best.

Liverpool have conceded the fewest goals in the Premier League this season (18) and Sutton admits he was wrong to doubt the Netherlands international.

“I’ve got to say, since the injury I wondered whether he could get back to his imperious best as a defender,” said the former Celtic striker on BBC Football Daily (via Rousing The Kop). “At one time, I thought he was the best defender in the world. I just thought maybe he’d lost a yard or whatever. Maybe his confidence had taken a bit of hit and he didn’t feel like he was quite the same player.

“But this season I think he’s got better and better the longer the season has gone on. Of course, he always sort of takes responsibility on his shoulders, but it’s good news for Liverpool.”

It of course took van Dijk some time to recover from the serious knee injury that he sustained a few years ago but he’s now proving why he’s recognised by many as the best defender in the world.

His powerful presence in the backline frightens forwards and it’s no coincidence that Klopp’s side are back to their best at the same time our No. 4 is too.

He’s leading by example this term and he’ll love nothing more than lifting some silverware this term as Liverpool captain.

So far so good but there’s still a long way to go!

Both form and history are on Liverpool’s side when they host Norwich in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Sunday.

As Premier League leaders and recently-confirmed Carabao Cup finalists, Jurgen Klopp’s side are in stunning form and last tasted defeat domestically in September.

But their unbeaten run over Norwich extends way back to 1994, when Jeremy Goss struck the only goal of a rare Anfield victory for the Canaries.

More recently, David Wagner’s side have won three of their last four matches as they look to reassert themselves in the Championship play-off picture.

This game will come moments after the draw for the FA Cup fifth round, so each team will know their opponents in advance – should they be the one to come out on top.

Date, kick-off time and venue
Liverpool vs Norwich is scheduled for a 2.30pm GMT kick-off on Sunday, January 28, 2024.

The match will take place at Anfield.

Liverpool maintained their challenge on four fronts by reaching the League Cup final with a draw at Fulham on Wednesday evening.

Luis Diaz’s early goal was enough despite a late Issa Diop equaliser as the Reds earned a 1-1 stalemate to progress 3-2 on aggregate and secure a Wembley showdown with Chelsea next month.

Liverpool now turn their attentions to the FA Cup when they entertain Norwich City in the fourth round on Sunday afternoon. And here we look ahead to the changes Jurgen Klopp could make when his team are next in action.

The possible return of a handful of players and the ongoing progress of a group of youngsters have given Klopp a little more room in which to manoeuvre regards team selection. And there will be significant rotation given the Premier League double header against Chelsea and Arsenal later next week.

Alisson Becker will be expected to resume in goal ahead of Caoimhin Kelleher, with Adrian third-choice between the sticks. Trent Alexander-Arnold is among those who could become available, although bench duty is most likely given Conor Bradley’s form since stepping in at right-back.

At left-back, Andy Robertson is fit and could start, giving Joe Gomez a deserved breather. Kostas Tsimikas remains out, but Owen Beck is also a consideration. Ibrahima Konate will be pressing for a recall at centre-back, with Jarell Quansah having featured alongside Virgil van Dijk at Fulham. Joel Matip is out for the season.

Szobsoszlai wait

Dominik Szoboszlai would offer a welcome option on the right of the midfield three should he be deemed fit enough to start after missing the last three weeks with a hamstring complaint. Harvey Elliott impressed in the role at Fulham, with Cody Gakpo having also featured there of late.

Alexis Mac Allister’s minutes are being managed after his return from injury earlier this month, particularly given the other recognised number six alternatives, Wataru Endo and Stefan Bajcetic, remain sidelined through international commitments and injury respectively.

Curtis Jones came off the bench to replace Mac Allister midway through the second half at Craven Cottage, but will be pressing for a start on the left of the midfield three. Ryan Gravenberch played all bar the closing moments in the position despite suffering from a heavy cold, but Thiago Alcantara is still out.

Should Klopp throw a curveball, it may be to hand Bobby Clark only a second senior start after recent cameos from the bench at Arsenal, Bournemouth and Fulham. Fellow youngsters James McConnell and Trey Nyoni were also among the substitutes on Wednesday.

The continued rotation of the attack means Diogo Jota is likely to start against Norwich, either down the centre or on the left flank.

That would leave Gakpo, Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz competing for the other two slots, with all three capable of playing on the left. Nunez and Gakpo can also perform down the middle, while Gakpo and Diaz have both started games on the right of late, along with Elliott.

Mohamed Salah is injured and would in any case otherwise have been on international duty, while Ben Doak remains out. Teenage winger Kaide Gordon is another alternative.
