Paul Merson says Liverpool have to start £16m player against Manchester City tomorrow
Fri 24 November 2023 06:30
James Brooke
Paul Merson has shared who he’d pick to play in Liverpool’s midfield against Manchester City tomorrow.
The Reds have had some selection issues in the middle of the park, with a couple of untimely injuries leaving options short. But with players returning to training yesterday following the international break, those troubles appear to have eased.
That should leave Jurgen Klopp able to pick from near-enough a full selection for Saturday’s trip to the Etihad. Nevertheless, after playing the full 90 minutes against Brentford last time out, Paul Merson has urged the manager to once again turn to Wataru Endo.
“Liverpool have a few selection headaches,” the former England midfielder told Sportskeeda. “I think they’ll play Joe Gomez at left-back instead of Kostas Tsimikas. He is more of a defender and he’ll tuck in.
“You’ve gotta be able to defend against City. In midfield, I’d probably play Wataru Endo and push Alexis Mac Allister in the ‘number 8’ position.
“He keeps the ball and that’s the kind of thing you want to do against Man City. If you want to beat City, you’ve got to capitalise on that extra pass that goes through the lines.”
Liverpool urged to start Endo
There’s no doubt that the Endo we see now is better than the Endo that surprisingly rocked up at Anfield in August.
However, you won’t get many Liverpool fans who appear with Merson here.
MORE LIVERPOOL STORIES
Of course, we all want to see Mac Allister unleashed in his more natural No.8 role. There’s also a worry that the Argentine will get overrun in the No.6 position against the bigger sides in the Premier League.
A trip to the Etihad is, in many ways, the litmus test for that. If Mac Allister can come through a clash against Pep Guardiola’s side unscathed, then he can anchor the midfield against pretty well any team in the world.

The concern over his suitability for that position may well come to a head tomorrow, though. If City are at it – and they usually are – it could be a tricky day for the 24-year-old fresh from an international sojourn.
Regardless of that, we just don’t see how Klopp goes with Endo.
Despite some of his shortcomings, the manager appears to be placing his trust in Mac Allister. With the Brentford game being just a second Premier League start for Endo, it seems unlikely that Jurgen will throw him in for this one.
The international break fatigue is likely to play a deciding factor in this one. Whoever turns out at the Etihad is in for a big job for Liverpool. We’ll back whoever Jurgen chooses.

“Ridiculous”: Jamie Carragher reacts to what he has just heard about Manchester City
Thu 23 November 2023 13:30
Billy Meyers
Jamie Carragher has now reacted to what David Ornstein said about Manchester City and the 115 charges.
The 45-year-old made the comments when speaking on The Overlap.
So, what did Jamie Carragher say about Manchester City? Let’s take a look…
What’s the story?
Well, the Sky Sports pundit was not happy when he heard Ornstein – Football Correspondent for The Athletic – explain Manchester City’s 115 charges in a bit more detail.
The respected journalist said: “This is much more complicated. If you think that Everton’s case of one charge ran into tens of thousands of pages of documentation, what do you think about Manchester City’s with 115 charges?
“We should point out that many of them were for alleged non cooperation, which you could say, why didn’t you cooperate? Manchester City will say, we’re not cooperating because we don’t believe in the process and the people running it.”
MORE MAN CITY STORIES
In response, Carragher said: “Well, I don’t agree with that. That’s just ridiculous.”

While Manchester City have every right to protest innocence regarding these 115 charges, failing to cooperate does not look good in any way.
Regardless of whether Manchester City trust the Premier League or the investigation process, you simply have to cooperate, or else it just makes things look suspicious.
Manchester City fans may be waiting years for an outcome
A trending question on Google after Everton were deducted ten points asked when Manchester City will be punished – if also found guilty.
By the sounds of it, any potential punishment will not be happening anytime soon – it is more likely to occur in 2027, according to leading barrister Nick De Marco KC.
manchester city

He told City AM: “Given the parties involved, given there are 115 charges, given that some of the charges are alleging things akin to fraud and dishonesty, given the lawyers and legal teams involved, I do not believe that this is going to be wrapped up in anything less than two to four years’ time. I think that’s impossible, and I don’t think anyone reasonably is arguing otherwise.”
Hopefully, Manchester City have done no wrong – or else relegation could be a realistic punishment.

FOOTBALLJurgen Klopp wants Goncalo Inacio at Liverpoolby briandavis23 November 2023
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has identified Sporting Lisbon star Goncalo Inacio as the ideal partner for Virgil van Dijk in central defence, according to Correio da Manha (page 26).
The Portuguese has been linked with a Premier League move for the past few years and Correio da Manha (CdM) reveal that the centre-back has the dream of playing in the English top-flight.
The Reds have been monitoring him for the best part of two seasons and Klopp has told the club’s hierarchy to secure his services when the transfer window reopens at the start of 2024.
The German tactician wants Inacio to partner Van Dijk and he sees him as a ‘priority’ for January. Inacio currently has a €60 million (£52m) release clause which does not put off Liverpool.
The main concern for the Merseyside giants could be the competition from Manchester United, Manchester City and Real Madrid in the New Year, as per today’s update from CdM.
Liverpool best placed to sign Inacio this winter
The Reds were prepared to pay £111 million to sign Moises Caicedo last summer but he ended up choosing to join Chelsea.

The club’s hierarchy only utilised a small portion of that fee to sign Ryan Gravenberch from Bayern Munich and it is quite clear that they have money to spend during the January transfer window.
This puts them in a strong position to land Inacio over United for example. We don’t believe Manchester City or Real Madrid will splash the cash on a centre-back at the midway stage of the season.
United are currently in a tough Financial Fair Play situation with the lack of owner investment, and they may struggle to pay most of the fee up front for Inacio which Sporting are bound to demand.
Inacio would be a fine acquisition for Liverpool. He is a strong ball-playing centre-back who likes to clear his lines. He has also been effective in making ball recoveries and has a good physical presence.
The Portuguese would provide a different dimension to the Reds’ backline, considering he is left-footed. He would no doubt command a starting role and could be good competition for Ibrahima Konate.

ExWHUemployee shares January budget news from “best placed” West Ham source
BY
EMILIO GALANTINI
PUBLISHED 2 HOURS AGO
Steidten has been tasked with finding a new striker.
ExWHUemployee has shared some important January transfer news on West Ham and their budget for the winter window.
Steidten’s task to sign new forward for West Ham
As reported by Ex last week, technical director Tim Steidten is growing more and more influential at the club and his “main focus” is signing a new striker for manager David Moyes.
Michail Antonio limped off on international duty recently, and he is expected to be out for around a month (Evening Standard). While his prognosis isn’t as bad as first feared, losing the Jamaican comes as a bitter blow for Moyes and highlights West Ham’s lack of number nine options.
Danny Ings appears out of favour at the club, having played just 68 minutes in the Premier League this season, with recent reports stating the Hammers are very eager for a few new options ahead of January.
Bournemouth forward Dominic Solanke is a target for West Ham, while rumours suggest that Steidten could go back in for Hugo Ekitike of Paris-Saint Germain.
Dominic Solanke’s style of play (via WhoScored)

Does not dive into tackles
Moyes has used the likes of Mohammed Kudus and Jarrod Bowen in more central roles this term, but an injury to the latter could make West Ham’s next starting eleven look very interesting. Signing a new number nine could be an all the more pivotal task for Steidten. While Antonio and Bowen could be back and firing by the time January comes around, their injury woes have drawn attention to West Ham’s serious lack of depth going forward.
ExWHUemployee shares January budget news
Speaking on his Patreon, as shared by West Ham Way, reliable club insider Ex says West Ham are “struggling” with their transfer budget this winter. He claims that while there is indeed money in the pot to potentially bring in a new forward, it isn’t seen as a large amount, and West Ham must be careful not to “do an Everton”.
“I have spoken to the person who would be best placed to answer on our January transfer budget,” said Ex.
“What I was told is that Under Financial Fair Play we are struggling. We overspent in 2021 and we have to be careful to not ‘do an Everton’.
“So although there is money there in the pot, it isn’t a huge amount as the club are being understandably careful. We only need to look at the situations at Everton, Man City and Chelsea to know how serious it can be if not keeping within the parameters.”
The three aforementioned sides are in trouble with the Premier League over alleged FFP breaches, with the Toffees in particular being docked 10 points and now facing a hefty compensation bill.
It is believed Southampton, Leicester, Leeds, Nottingham Forest and Burnley are attempting to sue Everton for around £300 million, as they all believe they’re entitled to compensation after Sean Dyche’s repeated avoidance of relegation to the Championship.
Therefore, West Ham absolutely cannot find themselves in the same precarious situation, but it will be interesting to see how they use their limited budget when the window reopens.

‘He’s the man’… Paul Merson urges Jurgen Klopp to start £16m Liverpool player vs Man City
Milo Clay
Thu 23 November 2023 14:15, UK
Paul Merson has urged Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp to start Wataru Endo against Manchester City this weekend.
Merson has been speaking to Sportskeeda and thinks Saturday’s clash would be ideal for the Japanese midfielder.
Liverpool head into Saturday’s game in exceptional form having won three of their last four Premier League games.
The Reds have only tasted defeat once this season and that was the controversial 2-1 loss at Tottenham.
Jurgen Klopp’s side look capable of challenging Manchester City once again after the German transformed his midfield over the summer.
Dominik Szoboszlai has already made a huge impact in the middle of the park, while Alexis Mac Allister has also impressed.
Wataru Endo is yet to nail down his place in Klopp’s side after a £16 million switch from Stuttgart over the summer.

There have been suggestions that he’s not quite at the required level to start regularly in a Klopp side.
But Paul Merson believes he’s the right man to start in midfield against City this weekend.
Merson urges Klopp to start Endo against City
Merson has backed City to beat Liverpool 2-1 in the early kick-off on Saturday.
But the Arsenal legend has urged Klopp to start Endo and push Mac Allister further up the pitch.
“In midfield, I’d probably play Wataru Endo and push Alexis Mac Allister in the ‘number 8’ postion,” Merson said. “He keeps the ball and that’s the kind of thing you want to do against Man City.
“If you want to beat City, you’ve got to capitalise on that extra pass that goes through the lines.
“You need players who can pick that pass. Endo is the man for me here because he is patient and there is the added advantage of unlocking Mac Allister’s full potential.”
Endo has only started a couple of games in the Premier League this season but did start from the off against Brentford last time out.
Klopp has often used Mac Allister in the No6 role, with Ryan Gravenberch also featuring. But Merson may have a point that this game could be suited to Endo’s qualities.
The 30-year-old excels at breaking up play and would offer Liverpool’s backline extra protection against the champions.
It would be a huge risk to play Mac Allister in a deeper role on Saturday and could leave Klopp’s side exposed in the middle of the park.

Liverpool confirm 4 players back from injury in HUGE boost vs. Man City
November 23, 2023
Jack Lusby
Liverpool have confirmed positive news on the injury front, with four players back in training ahead of the the trip to Man City on Saturday lunchtime.
The Reds went into the November break with a number of injuries, including a hamstring problem for Ibrahima Konate that ruled him out for France.
Ryan Gravenberch, Curtis Jones and Joe Gomez all missed the 3-0 win over Brentford, too, with the trio nursing knee, hamstring and muscle issues respectively.
This Is Anfield‘s David Lynch first revealed last week that all four players were due back after the break.
And Liverpool have now confirmed that Konate, Gravenberch, Jones and Gomez were part of sessions at the AXA Training Centre on Thursday, and will be in the squad vs. Man City.
Furthermore, following the conclusion of their fixtures with Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Colombia on Wednesday, the South American quartet of Alisson, Alexis Mac Allister, Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz rejoined the squad.
That comes after a coordinated flight back from the continent, as Liverpool continue their new approach to ensure those players return promptly.
“The boys were, pretty quickly after the game, on a plane and could fly straight to England. That makes a massive difference,” Jurgen Klopp explained after the October break.
“What we can do, we always try to do. [In September] it didn’t work out because it’s pretty expensive, you cannot pay all these planes alone all the time, so usually we share it with other clubs.
“This time it worked out pretty well.”
It remains to be seen whether Klopp will face any new absentees for Saturday’s top-of-the-table clash, though no obvious concerns arose from internationals.
In fact, Liverpool should be in rude health when they take on Man City, with only Andy Robertson (shoulder), Thiago (hip) and Stefan Bajcetic (calf) believed to be out.
Young right-back Conor Bradley made his return to training earlier this month following a stress fracture in his back, and continue his long-term rehabilitation during time off.
Klopp is expected to name his strongest possible side at the Etihad, though there are big decisions to make for centre-back, midfield and left wing.

Fabrizio Romano explains why ‘Klopp got angry’ over one question at Liverpool press conference

Fabrizio Romano has shed further light on why Jurgen Klopp ‘got angry’ over a question regarding Mo Salah’s future at Liverpool in a press conference on Friday.
When addressing the media yesterday ahead of this afternoon’s clash against Wolves, the Reds manager was clearly unhappy at being asked about the possibility of the 31-year-old leaving for Saudi Arabia in 2024, following strong transfer speculation in recent weeks.
In his eponymous Daily Briefing for CaughtOffside on Saturday morning, the Italian reporter shared the latest on the situation regarding the Egypt attacker.
Romano outlined: “At the moment, there’s absolutely nothing advanced or concrete between Salah and Saudi Arabia. The window closed a few days ago so if they wanted anything to be done, they had the chance to do it then.
“The strategy for the January window will be made later, around November. The situation regarding Salah is quiet now after a busy summer. Klopp got angry as there’s nothing ongoing for Salah at present, just feeling that Saudis could return in 2024.”

Klopp would clearly have been hoping that the discourse surrounding Salah’s future would’ve been put on the backburner once the Saudi Pro League transfer window shut last week and the Egyptian stayed at Liverpool.
Alas, the rumours of a potential move to the Middle East in 2024 look set to rumble on throughout the autumn and into the winter.
Once the summer transfer window fades from view and the matches come thick and fast, the speculation might subside in deference to the action on the pitch, but it’ll likely appear firmly back in focus by the time December rolls around and the January market is approaching.
The intense reporting around Salah over the past month or so could prompt Liverpool’s recruitment team to look deeply at sourcing potential replacements for next year if the club are no longer able to resist offers such as the £150m bid which was tabled a fortnight ago.
In the meantime, we hope that the 31-year-old will continue to rack up the goals at the consistently extraordinary rate which has seen him become one of the Reds’ top five most prolific players of all time.

Andre confirms Liverpool transfer story, hints at January move – “Couldn’t refuse”
October 28, 2023
Jack Lusby
Fluminense midfielder Andre has confirmed an offer from a “big European club,” known to be Liverpool, which he turned down in favour of a January switch.
Andre, the 22-year-old Brazil international, was subject of an enquiry from Liverpool during the summer transfer window.
It was even claimed that the Reds had made an offer worth around £25.6 million for the tenacious midfielder, which was rejected, with Fluminense unwilling to sell mid-season.
Their campaign runs through the calendar year, and the decision was made for Andre to stay and help a push for the Copa Libertadores, which now sees them in the final against Boca Juniors on November 4.
Ahead of that clash, Andre spoke to the official CONMEBOL channel and, in quotes translated by Fluminense for Foreigners (@Fluminense_eng), confirmed the story.
“There’s a lot of things in the last window that I didn’t talk about it,” he said.
“It was really [an offer] I couldn’t refuse, the club, the league. Every player dreams to play for a big European club, [in a] big European league.
“I decided to keep my word and stay, because when the January window closed, [manager Fernando] Diniz told me he wanted me until the end of the year.
“We didn’t know an offer like that would appear, and no matter what, I’d stay until December.
“Months passed by, and in the European summer window, we were in the round of 16 of [the Copa] Libertadores.
“It was a really hard decision. I think that if I’d have accepted that offer, I don’t know if I’d feel 100 percent comfortable with myself.
“Because I gave my word to Diniz, and he values your word a lot, the honesty.
“He always says that when we do the things the right way, good things happen.
“In January he told me that, 100 percent sure, if I stayed, I’d play, and my value would grow, and I didn’t have to think about it, and to do it right.”
Liverpool are expected to return with a new approach for Andre in January, by which point he will be in his mid-season break and hopefully with a Copa Libertadores winner’s medal.
Either way, Andre is “100 percent comfortable” with his choice to turn down a summer move, admitting “a lot of things can happen” this winter.
“Our team could have been knocked out in the round of 16. I had to take the decision,” he continued.
“Now, getting to the final, everyone will say I made the right decision.
“I think it was a loyalty gesture of staying and trying to win the Libertadores, so it was not important if we stayed [in it] or not, I’m 100 percent comfortable in making the decision to stay.
“Now we have to do everything to win this title, and by the end of the year, I don’t know exactly what will happen.
“A lot of things can happen, but I’m sure that, being here, knowing everything went right, helped me a lot as a person, and also helped my career.
“I got all the national team call-ups for the year, so I think that, as Diniz said, when we do the right things, be loyal and honest, good things always happen.”

‘Not looking good’: Glen Johnson says struggling Liverpool player’s days at Anfield are numbered

Glen Johnson has suggested that Thiago Alcantara’s days at Liverpool are numbered following the arrival of four new midfielders.
The Spaniard has been sidelined by injury since April owing to a number of concerns and his most recent hip trouble.
“I love Thiago as a player, he’s technically world class, but he’s struggled with injuries and I think the Premier League caught him by surprise a bit,” the former defender told Squawka.
“He did have some fantastic games, but maybe the pace of the game was just a little bit too quick.
“I’m sure he’ll go on to have a good career elsewhere but with Liverpool signing all these players in midfield that can stay fit then it’s not looking good for his Liverpool career.”
The Merseysiders have since added Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo to their midfield department.

Has Thiago Alcantara struggled?
Criticism of Thiago’s performances in the famous red shirt is perhaps a little harsh.
The former Barcelona technician ultimately joined a Liverpool side devastated by injuries in the 2020/21 season and was forced to adjust his style of play to compensate.

We’ve seen more than glimpses of his brilliance from that point onwards amid a series of injury issues and niggles which have unquestionably been a source of great frustration.
If this is to be his last season playing for us, though, we certainly hope we’ll get one last good run out of Thiago in the new year.

I can’t be frustrated at not starting for Liverpool – you can see why we spent £150m on midfield
Harvey Elliott has his say on Liverpool’s midfield revamp and looks ahead to the Reds’ trip to Man City this weekend

Dominik Szoboszlai celebrates with team-mates Harvey Elliott and Wataru Endo after scoring Liverpool’s second goal in their Carabao Cup win over Leicester City earlier this season
Harvey Elliott is relishing the competition for places at Liverpool following an £150m midfield revamp this summer.
The 20-year-old has made 16 appearances for the Reds so far this season, but has only started once in the Premier League after Jurgen Klopp brought in Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch in the summer.
Along with the new quartet, Elliott is also vying with Curtis Jones for starting opportunities, while Thiago Alcantara and Stefan Bajcetic will enhance the competition further when the two Spaniards return from long-term injury.

Having endured a transitional campaign last year with an ageing squad, Liverpool limped to a fifth-place finish in the Premier League. Yet, bolstered by their new engine-room, they currently sit second in the table and have the opportunity to leapfrog Manchester City and take top spot when they travel to the Etihad on Saturday.
A boyhood Reds fan, Elliott is delighted by the impact Klopp’s new signings are having at Anfield. And rather than being frustrated at his limited starting opportunities, he is actually enjoying the new competition for places.
“Yeah, (they’ve helped me) massively. These lads have come in and hit the ground running and it’s healthy competition now,” he told reporters when speaking after scoring a brace for England Under-21s against Northern Ireland. “We’re all striving towards the same goal, which is winning trophies.
“It’s healthy competition within the squad, which is what we want. Every time someone else plays or I play, the support around me is unbelievable from these lads and I do the same for them as well.
“We’re a team at the end of the day. You can’t be frustrated that you’re not playing. You just need to stay patient and when you get your opportunity, you need to take it.
“These boys who have come in, you can see the quality they have, hence why they’ve been bought for a lot of money and why they’ve signed for Liverpool – the best club in the world.
“We’re going to attract the best players as well. For me to be learning off them is great.”
Competition for places could be even greater at Anfield next season if Elliott has his way. Tyler Morton, who is currently on loan at Hull City, made his full England Under-21s debut alongside his fellow Liverpool midfielder against Northern Ireland on Tuesday night.
Like Elliott, he got on the scoresheet at Goodison Park, opening the scoring with a well-taken half-volley before setting up his club-mate’s second strike of the night with a pinpoint through-ball.
Having enjoyed a successful loan to the Championship himself with Blackburn Rovers, Elliott is well aware of how much of an impact such a switch can have on a player’s career. And delighted by his team-mate’s performance, he admitted he hopes they get to play plenty more times together for both club and country.
“Oh he’s amazing! I love Ty!” Elliott cheekily shouted with a grin of his face as he looked over his shoulder, well-aware that Morton was conducting his own interview just behind him. “We’ve come through the Academy together. He’s one of my best mates.
“To be sharing a pitch with him, it’s unbelievable for him and for myself as well. When his goal struck the net, I was the happiest kid in the world. I’m so thrilled for him, I’m over the moon.
“He was unbelievable today and, for me, the best player on the pitch. He fully deserved that goal.
“It (a loan move to the Championship) is a pathway. You can go out and get these experiences in the Championship, like I did as well. It’s a great league, full of great teams. The experiences you get there are like no other and it’s a great way to learn.
“I’m just happy that he’s doing his thing on loan and expressing himself the way I know he can. Hopefully we can share the pitch more often.”
Elliott and Liverpool return to club action on Saturday as they travel to the Etihad to face Man City. A 12.30pm kick-off, the Reds have taken to the field in all four post-international break lunchtime slots in 2023.
The first of the calendar year saw them suffer a 4-1 defeat away at City back in April, with Liverpool’s last Premier League victory at the home of their title rivals now coming over eight years ago.
Klopp has been critical of such a kick-off time on more than one occasion, with the Reds stung even more by their four South American players being in international action in the early hours of Wednesday morning before travelling back to Merseyside.
Elliott admit that preparations for such games are tough but, with Liverpool in a much stronger position than they were the last time they travelled to the Etihad, the midfielder is convinced that Klopp’s side are ready to face City.
“Yeah, definitely (it’s hard),” he said. “Especially with the South Americans as well, travelling and everything, but we can’t use that as an excuse. It’s the same for City as well.
“We just need to, obviously as soon as we get back, start preparing for that game. We need to make sure we’re mentally there and not focused on the bits before. We need to make sure we’re prepared and ready to go.
“It’s going to be a tough game at the Etihad, especially against a worldclass team as well. It’s not going to be easy. But I think we’ve had a good international break and we can take it into the weekend.”

Liverpool have to agree £27.4million fee for quick signing – Report

Liverpool, despite some reports to the contrary, no longer seem destined to sign Andre in the January transfer window.
The Brazilian is reportedly likelier to move to Fulham as things stand.
For Jurgen Klopp, this means a new target is needed and who better to sign than the man Fulham are looking to replace with Andre: Joao Palhinha.
The Portugal international is incredibly underrated and would be a brilliant in Liverpool’s side.
His height, tackling and Premier League experience make for the ideal transfer target.
To make Palhinha even more appealing, he will cost less than the €60 million to €65 million Bayern Munich were going to pay in the summer before his move to the Allianz Arena fell apart at the last minute.
According to Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, Fulham have indicated they will sell the 28-year-old to Bayern Munich for a lower fee than the “planned €60m-€65m in the summer.”
The journalist adds that Palhinha remains on Bayern’s transfer list but they will certainly not pay over €60 million to sign him in January.
He adds that signing him is a matter of money but as yet is “far away from being done.”
With Bayern yet to even begin negotiations for Palhinha, it gives Liverpool the perfect opportunity to reignite their interest.
Andre was an exciting option because of his ability to play as a no.6 while also being able to play to a high level as a left-sided no.8.
With Thiago Alcantara set to leave the club at the end of the season when his contract expires, he could have covered depth issues in two areas.
Palhinha on the other hand, is a defensive midfielder through and through which is exactly what Klopp’s team needs.

PGMOL chief Howard Webb has urged referees to stamp down on dissent, starting with a new crackdown on players waving imaginary yellow cards.
It comes after a series of incidents in the Premier League, including when referee Simon Hooper failed to send off Destiny Udogie. The Tottenham defender gestured for a card while already on a yellow during a game against Liverpool back in September but was not booked.
However, other top-flight stars have been cautioned for waving for a yellow card this season. On the opening weekend against Chelsea, Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister went down after being fouled, but he was the one who ended up in the referees’ notebook as he waved his arms to try and get his opponent booked.
According to The Times, Webb told officials at a referees summit in Loughborough that the policy must be consistently enforced throughout the season and in future years. The 52-year-old did, however, praise the success of stamping down on abuse aimed at officials, with Webb highlighting that this season has seen zero incidents of mass confrontation, compared to eight at this stage last term.

It is also stated that Webb urged VAR to take more responsibility and step in when soft penalties are clearly wrong. This comes after Webb told VAR to challenge the on-field officials after Newcastle were awarded a penalty for a foul from Hwang Hee-chan on Fabian Schar.
“We said from the outset that VAR shouldn’t referee the game, it should reserve itself for clear situations when a clear error has occurred on the field and the VAR steps in to have that rectified,” Webb said last week.
“The VAR is looking for clear evidence of that error and weighing up the different considerations. For example, has the defender played the ball? Is there any contact between the players?”
Anthony Taylor pointed to the spot after Hwang appeared to catch Schar inside the area. However, replays suggested Hwang touched the ball first and Wolves were insistent that it wasn’t a penalty. VAR official Jarred Gillett didn’t overturn the decision, with Callum Wilson stepping up to score.

“In this situation we see that Hwang doesn’t actually play the ball, the ball is played onto him by Schar and then there’s contact between the two of them, but what the referee is seeing in real-time is Hwang bring that leg through, making contact with Schar,” Webb added.
“When we see the replay we can see that Hwang actually pulls his swing back a little bit, stops it from going right through, and Schar just brings his foot through and there’s contact.
“We feel that this is a situation that reaches the threshold for being a clear and obvious error, even though there’s contact and even though the ball isn’t played by Hwang.
“We’re asking the VARs, going forward with our instruction to have a look at it, to see where the considerations sit and if they don’t like the decision on the field, ask the referee what they saw and if it’s significantly different to what’s been shown on the video, then recommend a review so that the referee can go to the screen and look at it again for himself.
“The starting point that the VAR thinks it’s a clear error. In this situation the VAR didn’t quite get there and in our opinion should have done.”

Simon Jordan now shares who he thinks will win between Manchester City and Liverpool
Wed 22 November 2023 16:30
Billy Meyers
Simon Jordan has now shared who he thinks will win the Premier League clash between Manchester City and Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.
The 56-year-old made his prediction when speaking on talkSPORT.
So, what did Simon Jordan say about Manchester City and Liverpool? Let’s take a look…
What’s the story?
Well, the man from Thornton Heath expects the Citizens to pick up all three points against the Reds.
Jordan simply said: “I would expect Man City to win this one.”
Pep Guardiola’s side are the outright favourites to win this clash, as the Spaniard’s side sit top of the Premier League after hoovering up a historic treble in the 2022/23 campaign.

Liverpool are – however – much stronger this season than in recent years, following the arrivals of Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch.

Darwin Nunez is also looking a lot more dangerous in his second season at Anfield.
Jürgen Klopp’s side currently sit just one point behind Manchester City in second place, and can move two points above the treble winners with a win at the Etihad Stadium, which unusually kicks off at 12:30pm.
Manchester City should be relaxed going into Liverpool clash
While the media are unsurprisingly portraying this fixture as a huge moment in the Premier League title race, there is still a very long way to go – Manchester City can even afford to lose this game and still defend their crown, a view Michael Brown agrees with.

To put it simply, there will still be 25 Premier League games to play after Saturday’s meeting between Manchester City and Liverpool, so Guardiola has plenty of time to salvage the situation if Klopp does move two points ahead this weekend.
After all, Manchester City managed to claw back an eight point gap on Arsenal last season with less time remaining in the season, which should bring comfort to the treble winners if things go wrong on Saturday.

Famous footballers caring supermoms
Many footballers consider their mothers to be the most important person in their lives. Read on to find out more about the famous footballers along with their caring supermoms.
Behind every successful footballer, there is a story. Of trials and tribulations, of loss and hope and tapping into their talent to score life’s goal. But, one person has silently stood firmly behind these stars, those are definitely the players’ heroes, their mothers. The following article is mainly about some footballers who are excessively attached to their mothers.
Mothers can either be incredibly annoying or very insightful depending on how old you are. But their love is unwavering and they always find the strength to ensure a good life for their children.
Footballers’ moms are obviously no different. Here are the top cases where some powerful moms went above and beyond the call of duty to help their sons chase their dreams.
The bond between mothers and children is very strong, kids are fond of their mothers and the mothers can shower love on their children unconditionally. But it is the duty of every father to provide for the family, and mothers are known to manage the resources provided by the father.
Some mothers played the role of the father in the absence of their husband and raised their kids to become great footballers.

Famous footballers caring supermoms:
It is usually believed that mothers always know best even if you’re among the biggest footballers on the planet. Here are the top footballers whose moms played a huge role in their success.
Maria Dolores Aveiro – Cristiano Ronaldo
The first on the list of the famous footballers’ mothers is Maria Aveiro, Cristiano Ronaldo’s mother. He is a Portuguese player and one of the greatest footballers of all time, Ronaldo’s father was never present to perform his duties as a father because he was a drunk.
His mother Maria solely raised him although she initially never wanted to have Ronaldo. She trained and natured Ronaldo and today he is one of the greatest football sensations.
Maria Dolores dos Santos Aveiro famously remarked she almost aborted Cristiano Ronaldo when she first found out about her pregnancy. It’s a good thing she didn’t because then the world would’ve missed out on possibly one of the most hardworking and talented players ever.
Born with a racing heart condition, young Ronaldo needed treatment in order to fulfil his dreams of becoming a footballer. He went on to have heart surgery at the tender age of 15, however, the road was anything but easy.
Dolores Aveiro, the mother of the Portugal skipper, opened up about the Cristiano Ronaldo heart surgery at a very young age. Dolores revealed that the doctors used a sort of laser to cauterize the source of the problem. She added that the Cristiano Ronaldo heart surgery was done in the morning and he came out at the end of the afternoon.
His father passed away when he was just 20, meaning that he missed out on most of Ronaldo’s exemplary achievements. However, his mother did everything she could to ensure the Portuguese ace turned into the sensation he is today.
She took care of his footballing commitments when he was a child and also played a role in helping him manage his finances until he turned 18. And now, she is reaping the fruits of her many sacrifices as she spends most of her time taking care of her grandchildren.
Ronaldo’s mother had already been operated in 2007. At that time, the Juventus striker donated about 100 thousand euros to the hospital that had treated her after the first surgery.
Throughout his career, Maria has been more than a mother to Ronaldo, probably also a part of his strength. Although in her autobiography “Mother Courage”, she revealed that she had thought about abortion when she discovered that she was pregnant with CR7.
Cristiano always puts himself second when it comes to his mother Maria, who is often seen alongside her beaming son. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner even brought his mom along in Italy for his new club signing.
The mother recently admitted that she almost aborted Ronaldo when she discovered the pregnancy but later changed her mind.
Maria Dolores said, “He is a child that I wanted to abort. God didn’t want that to happen and I was blessed because of that and God didn’t punish me.
Sometimes Ronaldo makes fun of me and says ‘You didn’t want me to be born. But now you see that I’m here helping all of you.’ And, well, sometimes we have a laugh about that.”
In relation to the absent father, Ronaldo said he was always drunk, “He would drink nearly every day,” said Ronaldo. “It frustrates me that he was never able to see my successes.”
The interesting point about Dolores Aveiro, the mother of Cristiano Ronaldo, is that she doesn’t want to see her son marry current partner Georgina Rodriguez as she believes the Argentine-born model has economic motives for a union.
The Portuguese star is believed to be very happy with Georgina, with whom he shares a family life in Manchester, where they live with Cristiano Junior, Eva, Mateo, and Alana, with the latter being the daughter they had together.
Indeed, it has been reported that the model is waiting on a proposal, but the Manchester United forward’s family are the main stumbling block to a potential wedding.
This is despite the mother’s comments that she gets on well with Georgina and that she appreciates the support she gives Cristiano Ronaldo!
Cristiano spent thousands of dollars to gift Georgina the ultimate birthday present with a laser show on the facade of the famous Burj Khalifa tower in Dubai where they were holidaying.
In the documentary, ‘I Am Georgina’, Ronaldo commented on their wedding, “I always tell Georgina that when we get that click, like everything with our life and she knows what I’m talking about.
“It could be in a year, or it could be in six months or in a month. I’m 1000 per cent sure it will happen.”
Celia María Cuccittini – Lionel Messi
Messi’s mother, Celia María Cuccittini is among the professional football players mothers. She played an important role in his growth and development as a footballer.
Like Ronaldo, the Barcelona star was born with a condition that threatened to end his footballing career even before he started. When his parents realized that as a child, Messi wasn’t growing as much as his friends, they took him to a doctor and realized he had a hormone deficiency that restricted his growth.
The treatment expenses proved to be too much for his parents to bear but that did not stop them. Initially, they reached out to the club he was with at the time – Newell’s Old Boys. They helped him a bit but Celia knew that it wouldn’t be enough in the long run.
After a few more trials and tribulations, Barcelona came into the mix and offered to pay for his treatment after he impressed during the trials. Immediately, his family decided to move to Spain to help young Messi stay closer to what would end up becoming the most crucial place in his career.
Messi often credits his grandmother for taking him to football coaching and getting him his first pair of boots but unfortunately, she passed away when he was 10. Well, she may have planted the seeds but
