Four youngsters called up to 14-man Man City squad and more things spotted on pre-season return
Manchester City returned to pre-season training on Monday with fewer players than usual – but still some big names, returning loanees, and academy call-ups.

Monday saw the first cohort of players return to the City Football Academy for pre-season training, as Pep Guardiola plots Manchester City’s latest Premier League title defence – in what could be his final season at the Etihad.

Just 12 hours after Spain beat England in the Euro 2024 final to crown Rodri a European Champion (again), and even less time since Julian Alvarez added another Copa America to his ridiculous collection of trophies, City teammates were reporting back for medical tests.

Those players not on international duty over the summer were present, plus some returning loanees and a handful of young players. MEN Sport reported on Monday that the majority of City’s Euro 2024 representatives will not take part in the four pre-season fixtures in the USA in the coming weeks as Guardiola opts to give them as much rest as possible. Only Josko Gvardiol and Mateo Kovacic – knocked out in the group stages with Croatia – are likely to fly out and play some part.

Haaland among the goals
With a depleted squad, Erling Haaland is the most high profile name returning, with Norway having not qualified for the Euros. His disappointment is City’s gain, though, with a well-rested striker ready for a season that could reach 80 games for City in the next 12 months.

The forward posted a video of himself meditating in the middle of a river on the eve of his return, showing his relaxed state, and he has been quiet on social media over the summer as he has spent time holidaying with friends and family. On his return to City, he posted some pictures of his first day back with the caption ‘Year Three’, as he embarks on his third season at the club.

With 90 goals and 15 assists in 98 games over his first two campaigns, City will hope for a similar return this season as they chase six trophies – and a video of him slotting the ball in the back of the net during a light training session suggested he is keen to get up and running as quickly as possible.

Phillips back with a smile
12 months ago, Kalvin Phillips returned for pre-season having turned down the option to leave City on loan and willing to fight for his place – determined not to give up on his Blues career after one season. By Christmas, he knew his path to the first team was blocked, and sought a loan move to West Ham. That didn’t quite go to plan, and Phillips is now in a crossroads in his career. Talk of interest in him at the start of the summer has gone quiet.

So Phillips is back at City, under contract for another four seasons, and will embark on the pre-season tour if a club is not found for him – as MEN Sport relayed on Monday. His value may be best served as simply playing and training in Rodri’s position until Rodri returns, rather than being a genuine option to replace him.

But with his trademark smile and positive attitude, Phillips posed for photos with Haaland and Jack Grealish on Monday, and will be a good figure to have around the squad for the next few weeks.

McAtee and Doyle are back
James McAtee will get the chance to prove himself this summer after two years at Sheffield United. He looked bright last summer in Asia before insisting on a loan back to Bramall Lane. Now, there could be a route to first team minutes given the expanded schedule, and he can look to follow in Oscar Bobb’s footsteps in proving that relatively few minutes does not mean you can’t have an impact.

McAtee could be seen stretching with fellow loanee Callum Doyle, who won promotion with Leicester last season and reached the play-off final with Coventry the year before (and helped Sunderland to promotion from League One the year before that). Doyle is a player who could command millions from a club willing to buy one of the best young centre-backs around, or may also be sent out on loan again.

But having spent most of the last three years away, a pre-season under Pep Guardiola could turn him into even more of an exciting prospect.

Four youngsters spotted
With so many first-teamers away, Guardiola will boost his squad with a number of academy players on tour. Four who are likely to get the call-up were spotted on Monday across various social media posts. Joel Ndala – the tricky winger – posted a series of photographs including an embrace with Guardiola. He will be looking to make the most of a pre-season with the manager after playing a key role in the FA Youth Cup win last season for the academy.

Jacob Wright and Mahamadou Susoho made their debuts last season and were regular features in senior training, and were present on Monday. Wright missed the Youth Cup final with injury, joining the celebrations on crutches, but has recovered and now looks set to go on tour – offering some much-needed cover in defensive midfield.

Finally, the highly-rated Nico O’Reilly was part of the group, who has struggled with some bad injuries in recent seasons, but is one of the stand-out performers in the youth teams and could now get a chance to take his attacking flair to the USA.

Man City players spotted in training on Monday: Ederson, Ortega, Carson, Lewis, Phillips, Grealish, Haaland, Bobb, McAtee, Doyle, O’Reilly, Ndala, Wright, Susoho,

Club have now withdrawn from negotiations with Man City for £35m star

One club are reported to have withdrawn from negotiations with Manchester City after failing with their latest bid.

City have offloaded five players so far this window, but they have all been youngsters, plus fringe player Sergio Gomez.

Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Tommy Doyle, Lewis Fiorini and Liam Delap have all departed, but Pep Guardiola is yet to lose any of his big hitters from the first-team.

But one man who there has been a lot of speculation about in recent weeks is Ederson.

The Brazil international has been a target for Saudi Arabia, with Al-Nassri showing the most interest in recent days. They have been ready to offer the City number one a whopping £900,000 per week.

But there hasn’t been an agreement between the two clubs, and now it looks like a potential deal could be in jeopardy.

It was claimed last night by journalist Rudy Galetti that Al-Nassr have now withdrawn from the negotiations with City.

City did not accept the club’s latest offer for the South American, with Galetti going as far as to declare that ‘it’s off’.

He adds that three days ago, a bid of around £25 million was sent by the club, and that personal terms have been agreed since the beginning of July.

Al-Nassr were even said last week to have been hopeful of typing up this deal ‘within a week’.

But it now looks like the move won’t happen. Or it has at least hit the rocks for now, with the Saudi club clearly needing to offer a lot more money.

Meanwhile, Ederson was one of a handful of players to return to the CFA as City get their pre-season underway.

Pep Guardiola has afforded more time off to players who went deep in international tournaments, but Brazil’s exit to Uruguay in the quarter-final in the Copa America means Ederson is already back.

Potential big boost for City

So it looks like it could be over for Al-Nassr regarding their pursuit of Ederson.

It really would be a boost for City if he stayed this summer. Ederson has been a fantastic signing since coming in for around £35 million in the summer of 2017.

He may not be the greatest shot-stopper in the game – although he is still great in this aspect – but the 30-year-old is the best ball-playing goalkeeper around and is integral to the way City play out from the back.

His passing range is absolutely insane, and to have someone who can play balls and break lines like him is really invaluable.

We will see if there are any more twists and turns. But the claim from Galetti last night is quite a significant one.
