Morikawa withdraws from Memorial
by News Wires June 5, 2023

Collin Morikawa

DUBLIN, Ohio ā€” Collin Morikawa withdrew from the final round of the Memorial golf tournament because of back spasms, keeping him from a chance to win for a second time at Muirfield Village.

Morikawa had shot 68 in the third round and was two shots out of the lead. He said he was doing pre-round exercises when a muscle in his lower back gave out.

ā€œWe were doing some like reflex stuff, trying to reach down and try to pick something up like quick and low. Went after it weird,ā€ the American said according to AP.

ā€œLiterally have never had this in my life. IĀ“ve hurt my back briefly before, but like nothing has been this bad, especially never warming up.ā€

He said he tried hitting about 10 balls on the range and he hit a clunky 9-iron that went only about 95 yards. He realized that wouldnā€™t work at Muirfield Village.

Morikawa won the Workday Charity Open at Muirfield Village in 2020 when it was held a week before the Memorial, replacing the Canadian Open during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Morikawa said he wasnā€™t overly worried about the recovery and will rest ahead of the US Open on June 15-18 at Los Angeles Country Club.

Tom McKibbin held off a German challenge to win the European Open in his debut season on the European tour.

The 20-year-old from Northern Ireland started the final round as one of six players tied for the lead at 6 under par and went on to win by 2 shots on 9 under overall.

He finished his round of 3-under 70 with a birdie on the par-five 18th after missing an eagle putt.

ā€œPretty amazing, it was a great day,ā€ McKibbin said. ā€œIt probably wonā€™t sink in until tomorrow.ā€

Marcel Siem (71) and Maximilian Kieffer (70), who were both bidding to become the first German in 15 years to win a tour event on home soil, shared second place along with French player Julien Guerrier (72).

Siemā€™s and Kiefferā€™s challenges still underlined the recent resurgence of German players, however. Germans have won six events in the last 10 months on the European tour after previously not having won since 2014.

McKibbin built a 2-shot lead after the front nine, but bogeys on Nos. 11 and 13 left him briefly level with Siem and Kieffer before he recovered with a birdie on the 15th.

Instead of playing it safe, McKibbin took a risk with his second shot on the 18th, playing a draw around a tree to hit the ball close to the pin for the eagle attempt.

McKibbin moved up from the Challenge Tour. He grew up playing at the Holywood Golf Club near Belfast, the same as four-time major winner Rory McIlroy. Until now, his most notable tour achievement was holding the first-round lead at the Singapore Classic in March before tying for 12th.

Liverpool are expected to bid for Benfica super talent Joao Neves with the teenager set for a very, very special career.

The search for a new specialist no.6 at Anfield continues after Fabinho switched the Premier League for the Saudi Pro League in the summer.

Wataru Endo has done an admirable job of adjusting to Jurgen Klopp’s demanding tactics yet there remains the need for a defensive midfielder in the Liverpool lineup.

Joao Neves has been scouted by the Reds and could be an option in future transfer windows.

According to O Jogo in Portugal, Benfica expect Liverpool to submit a bid for the Ā£130 million-rated super talent.

Manchester United are in pole position but Liverpool are a far more attractive destination with the Red Devils not winning a Premier League trophy since 2013.

Due to the high interest in Neves, Benfica are keen to extend his contract but if the player wishes to leave, they may be powerless to sway him.

That said, his contract only expires in 2028. Perhaps Benfica’s hopes of reaching a fresh contract agreement speaks to a level of desperation. His current terms last for another four years,

Vincent Kompany made a habit of scuppering Liverpool title challenges during his playing days at Manchester City.

But while the Burnley boss, in his first game against the Reds in the dugout, couldnā€™t put another spoke in the wheel of the title bandwagon of Jurgen Kloppā€™s side.

Instead, the main threat for much of this unnecessarily tense game appeared to come in the form of two figures who have done even more to infuriate the Liverpool boss than Kompany ever has.

LFC RATINGS: Wataru Endo, Diogo Jota and two others excellent

The visitors, already ahead through Darwin Nunezā€™s early drought-ending strike, appeared to have reaffirmed their dominance shortly before the half-hour when Cody Gakpo smashed home.

However, referee Paul Tierney adjudged Nunez to have fouled Charlie Taylor earlier in the move, a decision with which VAR Simon Hooper could find no evidence to overturn despite any contact on Taylor being minimal. Tellingly, the Burnley defender didnā€™t even appeal, instead putting his hands to his head at the Clarets conceding.

Tierney, of course, will never be on Kloppā€™s Christmas card list ā€“ nor that of an away end that passed an X-rated verdict on the referee on several occasions here ā€“ after several previous run-ins, while Hooper was the man in the middle for the controversial VAR-infected defeat at Tottenham Hotspur back in September, now Liverpoolā€™s only defeat in their last 30 Premier League matches.

Worse, though, was to come shortly after half-time, when Harvey Elliott capped a brilliant team move only for Hooper to advise Tierney to consult his monitor and ultimately disallow the strike as Mohamed Salah was offside in front of goalkeeper James Trafford. None of the officials appeared to notice Salah had been shoved there by Burnleyā€™s Jordan Beyer.

That could have proven a turning point, with Liverpool evidently bewildered by the decision while Burnley, aware of their escape, were roused by the previously dormant Turf Moor crowd.

The Reds, though, ultimately parked their anger and demonstrated character to hold firm and keep only a second clean sheet in 15 away games, substitute Diogo Jotaā€™s late strike securing a 2-0 win.

Indeed, there was a certain defiance in Kloppā€™s trademark triple first-pump that was greeted with delight post-match by the travelling Kop, who then saluted Liverpool returning to the top of the table for a few days at least.

After all, itā€™s hard enough winning the title without having to overcome the obvious flaws of officials as well. This was a potential banana skin safely negotiated.
