Man City have another world-class talent on their hands – but only if they learn from Cole Palmer mistakes

It isn’t easy breaking into Manchester City’s first team. For all of his many qualities as a manager, Pep Guardiola has seldom shown much willingness to give academy products many minutes on the field at the Etihad, and Phil Foden remains the only player to complete the transition from the youth teams to the starting line-up. Given how good Cole Palmer has been at Chelsea since being jettisoned by City last summer, one wonders how much talent they might miss out in if they don’t make the path into the matchday squad a little easier.

But for all the seller’s regret City might be feeling after seeing Palmer practically running the Chelsea attack by himself for large parts of the season, at least he isn’t the only startlingly talented youngster they have coming through. Rico Lewis and Oscar Bobb are both on the fringes of the first team already – and are full internationals for their respective countries – but there may well be another player now on the books who could have an even bigger impact if City and Guardiola get his development right.

In January, City spent a reported £12.5m plus add-ons to buy 18-year-old Argentine attacking midfielder Claudio Echeverri from River Plate before loaning him back for the remainder of the year. And judging by the way he’s started the new season in his home country, City will want to fast-track him as far and as fast as Guardiola is willing to permit.

Standing 5’7” tall in his studded boots, Echeverri is nicknamed ‘El Diablito’ – ‘The Little Devil’ – both for his short stature, his dribbling skills and as a play on the nickname of Bolivia legend Marco ‘El Diablo’ Etcheverry, who was similarly quick, similarly hard to tackle and had an equally powerful strike as well as being a near-namesake. But watching him play, there’s at least as much of a resemblance to Foden in the way he runs quickly at defenders with the ball glued to his feet.

He has a similar sort of dribbling style to Foden too, hunched slightly over the ball as he motors past tackles with pace and deftness. It’s his ball-carrying skills which have caught the eye the most so far, and he’s left many far more experienced defenders for dead in the Argentinian domestic game already, but his game is well-rounded.

He’s a goalscorer, recently bagging a brilliant first goal for River in a game against Gimnasia after he hared into the penalty area, slalomed past a defender who was completely befuddled by a flick of the feet and lashed the ball into the roof of the net on the angle with his favoured right foot. For a small man, he can generate some hugely impressive power with his shots. And while that might have been his first professional goal, he’s also rattled in 12 goals in 20 matches for Argentina’s Under-17s, including a hat-trick in the World Cup against Brazil.

And his passing isn’t shabby, either. He’s got the knack of spotting his target and getting the ball out quickly and of playing people into space, all of which makes him even more difficult to defend because it’s impossible to know whether he’ll run or pass, and he’ll make his decision at lightning speed. That amount of technique and that degree of alacrity in his play makes him a huge prospect.

He’s not the finished article, of course, and he often has to use his dancing feet to dig himself out of trouble thanks to a slightly leaden first touch which means he doesn’t have the instantaneous control of a player like his idol, Lionel Messi, but given the degree of technique he has and the speed of his development, you wouldn’t bet against him adding that to his arsenal down the line. He looks like one hell of a player.

City will need to take care of him and make sure he has the opportunities he needs in a way they ultimately failed to do with Palmer. With the Chelsea man, they did half of the job, training him up to have all the quality he needed to succeed but never letting him get enough of a chance to impress in the senior squad. Leaving Echeverri on loan at River was probably a smart move in that regard. By the time he finally makes the trip to Manchester, he should have his first full season of top-level football under his belt.

Not that his inexperience has prevented him from playing exceptionally well in the early stages of the Argentine season. As well as the goal against Gimnasia, he has already picked up a couple of assists, including one in a 2-1 Supercopa win over Estudiantes. The Argentine campaign is young, but Echeverri looks like he’s as good as anyone in the country right now.

City need to get this one right. If Echeverri spends a few years getting little more than the occasional cameo from the bench or EFL Cup outing, then he’s unlikely to live up to his stellar potential. But if Guardiola can offer him the opportunities, he has the skill set to go far. And the attitude – he first made a name for himself after scoring nine goals in a six-game youth tournament in Italy before complaining to the media that his team’s final position of third wasn’t good enough. He was 11 years old.

One can’t fault the young man’s determination – but one can fault the lack of a clear pathway for City’s academy players. Given how much they’ve invested in bringing some of the best young talent in the game to the Etihad Campus over the last few years, they’re going to need to learn the Cole Palmer lesson quickly, otherwise they will have wasted a lot of money, and potentially the talent of supremely gifted players. Echeverri, you would think, is too good to be allowed to go to waste.

Jurgen Klopp will be hoping that Liverpool’s injury list can clear up for the final 10 games of the campaign, while an assault on the Europa League is also ongoing.

Klopp had hoped that Curtis Jones would be back for the Reds after the international break. The midfielder has been sidelined since suffering an ankle injury in a 4-1 win at Brentford on 17 February, which denied him a potential maiden England senior call-up. But Jones was absent from training, per Sky Sports filming the session.

Ibrahima Konate was another not spotted by the Sky cameras. The centre-back has missed Liverpool’s previous three matches but did make a return to action for France during the international break. It could be that the Reds are managing Konate’s minutes to ensure he does not sustain another setback.

It is also reported that Andy Robertson looks likely to miss out against Brighton. The left-back was forced off in the 37th minute of Scotland’s 1-0 loss against Northern Ireland. However, reports suggest his ankle problem is not serious.

Darwin Nunez pulled out of Uruguay duty because of a tight hamstring picked up in the 3-2 FA Cup loss against Manchester United. But the striker training and seems over his issue.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Diogo Jota, Alisson Becker, Thiago Alcantara, Joel Matip and Ben Doak continue their respective recoveries.

‘World-class’ Liverpool player is now set to miss Manchester United game next weekend

According to the latest reports, Liverpool will have a ‘world-class’ player missing the game against Manchester United.

Ever since that defeat before the international break at Old Trafford in the FA Cup, Liverpool will have been desperate to bounce back.

This international break has probably seemingly stretched on for a lot longer because of that blow at Old Trafford. However, the wait is not far away now. Liverpool will be back in action on Sunday, and taking on Brighton in the Premier League.

That game is going to be hugely important for Liverpool, as will the following game against Sheffield United at Anfield next Thursday. However, the match everyone is looking forward to is next Sunday’s return to Old Trafford.

It will be a game that could decide Liverpool’s fate in the Premier League title race. It will also be a perfect opportunity for Liverpool to strike revenge.

However, ahead of the match, one Liverpool player, who Jermaine Defoe has recently described as ‘world-class’ has reportedly been ruled out of action.

The latest report on Trent Alexander-Arnold and when he could return
Yesterday, Jurgen Klopp seemed optimistic about Trent Alexander-Arnold’s return to action. The Liverpool full-back has missed 13 of Liverpool’s 19 matches in this calendar year so far.

MORE LIVERPOOL STORIES
Already he has missed more games than any other previous season for Liverpool. Earlier reports, though seemed optimistic that he could return from injury to play against Manchester United. However, those reports have been quashed by The Athletic.

According to The Athletic, Alexander-Arnold is expected to miss the Manchester United game. The earliest he could return to action for Liverpool is against Atalanta in the Europa League on April 11th, or the game against Crystal Palace in the Premier League three days later.

What Trent Alexander-Arnold’s injury means to Liverpool
Not having Alexander-Arnold back for the Manchester United game is a huge blow for Liverpool. He is a world-class talent, and he is someone who can make the difference on the pitch.

Thankfully, Conor Bradley has been an astute cover in his absence, so it’s not all doom and gloom.

However, Liverpool will hope the right-back can return to action as soon as possible. Alexander-Arnold is essential to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool team. Having him back in the side will be a major boost.

WHO IS THE EX-LIVERPOOL MAN ARTETA REPORTEDLY WANTS AS ARSENAL ASSISTANT?

Olly Dawes
Wed 18 December 2019 18:00, UK
Arsenal are reportedly pursuing Manchester City’s Rodolfo Borrell.

Arsenal are close to landing Manchester City assistant Mikel Arteta as their new boss – and he could raid Pep Guardiola’s men immediately.

The Gunners are moving closer to landing Arteta, as reported by The Mirror, and it’s key that the rookie coach brings in an experienced assistant manager to aid him.

That same report suggests that the top target is Manchester City assistant coach Rodolfo Borrell, who has of course worked with Arteta at the Etihad Stadium.

Borrell may not be a familiar name to some Arsenal fans, so here are five facts about the Spaniard who could follow Arteta to North London.

1. Borrell didn’t have much of a playing career to speak of, but made his name as a coach with Barcelona, taking charge of their youth sides up to Under-18.

2. The 48-year-old has had a stint as a caretaker manager, taking charge of Greek side Iraklis for three games in 2008, winning two of them.

3. After briefly returning to Barca, Borrell was lured to Liverpool by Rafael Benitez, spending four years with the Reds as Under-18 boss, Under-23 boss and academy manager.

4. Borrell has been with City for nearly six years now, again showing his versatility having been Head of International Relations and Scouting to begin with, before stepping into an assistant coach role to Pep Guardiola.

5. His football mind has been praised, and he has even been credited with playing a role in the early development of players like Lionel Messi, Cesc Fabregas and Andres Iniesta at Barcelona, as well as Raheem Sterling at Liverpool – and Arsenal will hope he can develop their players similarly.

FOOTBALLJurgen Klopp shares big injury update on Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Beckerby stevenmangan28 March 2024

Liverpool are back in action this weekend in the Premier League after a brief hiatus due to international break.

The Reds will face Brighton at Anfield on Sunday. Before the international break, Liverpool lost their FA Cup game against Manchester United, but now they have to focus on winning every game from here on in the league as the title race approaches its climax.

Liverpool have been plagued with injury problems throughout the season and the misery doesn’t seem to end as Andy Robertson has now picked up an injury while playing for Scotland.

Jurgen Klopp will be hoping to get back some of his key players from injuries as we enter the business end of the season. The Times have claimed that Curtis Jones could be involved in Sunday’s game, while it won’t be long before other players join him in the first team.

Footage is doing the rounds, shared by Anfield Edition, where a Liverpool fan Liam Whittle is seen having a conversation with Jurgen Klopp in the AXA training centre. He asked him about Alisson’s injury update, and Klopp has confirmed that the Brazilian should return within the next two to three weeks.

A Liverpool fan, @LiamWhittle5, managed to speak to Jurgen Klopp at the AXA Training Centre today, and has revealed that Alisson is about “2 1/2 – 3 weeks” away from returning đŸ§€

Liverpool injury list
Despite missing the 31-year-old goalkeeper for so long, Liverpool didn’t really miss him. Caoimhin Kelleher, the second-choice goalkeeper, has been tremendous for the Reds, and he has done a massive job for the club.

Kelleher once again will be in goal when the Reds face Brighton this week.

Ryan Gravenberch came back to the side before the break, but the Reds are still missing several key players. Trent Alexander-Arnold is still some weeks away from returning to the side, while the same can be said about Diogo Jota.

Liverpool fans will be relieved to find that Jones is almost ready to play again while Alisson shouldn’t be far away from returning to full training.

Jack Grealish’s Man City form: Winger remains too passive in possession for Pep Guardiola’s side and has to improve
Manchester City’s comeback against Borussia Dortmund came after Jack Grealish had been substituted and questions remain about how he fits into this Pep Guardiola team
By Adam Bate, Comment and Analysis @ghostgoal

Jack Grealish struggled during Manchester City’s game against Borussia Dortmund
There was a point during the first half of Manchester City’s win over Borussia Dortmund when the space that the home side had been seeking for much of the evening had presented itself at long last. This was the moment they had been playing for.

Having finally manoeuvred the ball into the feet of Erling Haaland, the forward turned sharply and fizzed a pass out to Jack Grealish in the left channel. The winger was now free because of Haaland’s habit of drawing defenders towards him.

Unfortunately, one touch became two and the space was shut down. City settled for a corner. In the end, it was barely a half chance. Grealish had not exactly messed up the opportunity but there was a sense that he had failed to maximise it.

Pep Guardiola compared Erling Haaland to Johan Cruyff after his winner against Dortmund
The same might be said of his Manchester City career so far. A Premier League title winner in his first season, Grealish is World Cup-bound in his second. City are favourites to retain their domestic crown and to add that European one at long last. Questions remain.

His own contribution continues to feel a little underwhelming and the statistics never seem to do his reputation any favours. He is yet to score this season. If it feels early to consider that a valid criticism, do note that nine City players have managed to do so.

Grealish’s total of three league goals in 28 appearances last season was one fewer than central defender Aymeric Laporte and only more than Ferran Torres – a player who had made his final Premier League appearance for the club by this time last year.

This is a limited version of the story so unfortunately this content is not available.

Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus have moved on – 30 goals in all competitions between them last season – and though Haaland should cover that on his own there is still an expectation that Grealish shows improvement in his second season as a City player.

The ÂŁ100m fee is not his fault but the competition is his problem. He has been fine. But when trying to follow Sterling and with Phil Foden waiting his turn on the bench, fine is not going to be good enough to play when it matters in Pep Guardiola’s City side.

Foden provided more evidence of that with the urgency of his cameo against Dortmund. Suddenly there was an energy in the team as he drove at the defence with purpose. City were behind and chasing the game at that point but the difference was still stark.

“We had a lot of problems to get our rhythm,” Guardiola explained. “We were so passive in our transition, our movements to be aggressive. We struggled. We were playing in the wrong gear.” That only changed once Foden, Julian Alvarez and Bernardo Silva came on.

“The dynamic of Phil and Bernardo and Julian did us good and gave us another rhythm. This is who we are.” He was not aiming those comments specifically at Grealish but there are times when the winger comes to embody City at their slowest tempo.

Grealish keeps the ball well. But it is all so safe. Often it can appear as though his chief role is to hug the touchline, making the pitch as wide as possible so that Joao Cancelo can find an extra yard of space in that channel from which he is able to do so much damage.

Guardiola alluded to this last season when discussing Grealish. “Sometimes maybe he has to be a more aggressive guy,” he said. “But the decision-making, to take an extra pass, it is not wrong. It is good. He creates space for the guy who got the ball from him.”

There is joy to be had in creating space for Cancelo. After Grealish went off, it was his outside-of-the-boot assist for Haaland’s winner. It is a little ironic that Guardiola suggested afterwards that Cancelo is inclined to try to do too much with the ball.

“Every ball he has, he has to make this kind of actions. I know he can do it. He does it a lot. But you cannot force it. Sometimes he does it quite often. But he is still young.” So, Cancelo tends to try that final pass too much and Grealish does not try it often enough.

Guardiola no doubt admires that ability to retain the ball in tight areas. Sometimes it can seem as if Grealish will only surrender possession at a time of his choosing – whether that is a cross, a shot or a tumble that buys a free-kick. Otherwise, he could keep it forever.

But there is still an onus on him to do more with the ball than he is doing. Look at the positions in which he received it against Dortmund. These were areas of the pitch where a world-class player might be expected to hurt the opposition far more than he did.

Grealish did not complete a single dribble.

His off-the-ball running is never likely to match Sterling and Jesus, whose runs in behind were so important for City. Their wastefulness was often criticised but the chances kept coming. Grealish is a different type of player. He must make his impact with the ball.

The assumption when he arrived from Aston Villa was that he would revel in a possession team because he would see much more of it. That has not proven to be the case. In fact, Grealish had more touches of the ball per 90 minutes at Villa than he does at City.

This is a limited version of the story so unfortunately this content is not available.
Open the full version
He was among those surprised by that.

“I have found it a lot more difficult than I thought I would,” he said himself last season. “At first I thought I would have more of the ball, get more assists and goals but it doesn’t work like that at all. I have had nowhere near as much of the ball as I used to get at Villa.”

He does have the ball in the opposition penalty box more often now. But that only makes it more alarming that his goals and assists are down. In part, that is as a result of poor finishing by him and others – his expected goals and assists figures are actually higher.

Against Dortmund, he had three shots. As many as Haaland on the night. All of them were blocked. It sums up what we have seen from him so far. Unlucky? Perhaps. But the sympathy will soon run out unless he can do more when the moments come his way.

“Women must accept me as part of the sisterhood, I’m a woman” – Bobrisky says

Nigerian star Okuneye Idris Olanrewaju, often known as Bobrisky, has declared herself a woman, claiming that women have no choice but to accept her as a member of the sisterhood.

This declaration appears in a new post with the caption: “Women have no choice. They have to accept me as part of the sisterhood. “I’m a woman.”

The declaration comes after Bobrisky won the prize for best dressed female.

Many Nollywood stars and worried Nigerians have weighed in on the unexpected event of receiving the prize despite not being biologically female.

In response to the criticism that followed the prise, Bobrisky issued a new statement emphasising that he deserves respect from women and everyone else and should not be criticised simply because she identifies as a woman.
