Ex-coach on why Liverpool still need Mamadou Sakho, reveals playerâs âoutstandingâ attitude
Former Liverpool U23s manager Michael Beale believes the Reds would be in a much better position if Mamadou Sakho was still in favour.
Sakho joined Crystal Palace at the end of the January transfer window, with the Frenchmanâs arrival coinciding with a sharp upturn in fortunes at Selhurst Park.
The Eagles sealed four consecutive wins following Sakhoâs debut, keeping three clean sheets, with Wednesdayâs 3-1 loss away to Southampton their first defeat with the centre-back in their ranks.
Meanwhile, Liverpool have registered just one clean sheet in the Premier League since the turn of the year, with the likes of Joel Matip, Dejan Lovren and Ragnar Klavan all struggling.
And Beale, who had Sakho in his U23s squad before joining Brazilian side Sao Paulo as assistant manager in January, believes the Reds would be better off with the former PSG captain.
âIt is a shame what happened at Liverpool. Both parties have lost,â Beale told Sky Sports.
âSakho is playing for a club that I think he is too good to play for.
âEveryone is looking for a left-footed centre-half. If it is to be that he leaves Liverpool, he wonât be short of offers. He will likely move on.
âIt will be sad if there cannot be some form of reconciliation, because I think Liverpool still need him. Jurgen felt he could go with other players.
âIf Sakho was able to play against Sevilla in the Europa League final, Liverpool would have won. I am sure of that.
âThat would have changed the whole course of things at Liverpool; they would have been in the Champions League, extra revenue, attract better players.
âMaybe Klopp cannot forget that. I donât know the ins and outs.â
Sakho was initially frozen out after a suspension for a suspected drug offence, though this was eventually overturned during pre-season.
But Klopp moved to send Sakho home from the clubâs tour of the United States, citing a series of transgressions, but Beale insisted the centre-backâs attitude was âoutstandingâ with the U23s.
âWhen he first came to us at the U23s, I didnât really know what happened with the manager,â he added.
âI didnât want to know, and I said to him that as long as he respected me and the U23 players and staff then we wouldnât have a problem. He went well beyond that.
âFrom that day onwards he was getting changed in a Portakabin. He was never, ever late, and he worked his socks off.
âHe could not have been a better professional. You are seeing the results of that work now at Palace.
âAlthough we had some good players in that groupâBen Woodburn and Trent Alexander-Arnoldâhe was playing in front of 1,000 people, and was the target for everyone, being so famous.
âHis attitude was outstanding. I have never seen anything like it.â
Sakho has revealed he would be open to rejoining Kloppâs squad next season, but this seems highly unlikely, with Southampton and Napoli both interested.

Alasdair Gold now shares why Antonio Nusa chose a move to Brentford over Tottenham
Journalist Alasdair Gold has now shared why Antonio Nusa has chosen a move to Brentford over Tottenham Hotspur in the coming days.
Spurs were thought to be in the driving seat to sign Nusa after diligently chasing his signature in the last week or so.
Ange Postecoglou was thought to be the perfect manager to unlock the wingerâs rich potential, and a loan-back deal which saw Nusa arrive permanently in the summer looked ideal for all parties.
However, itâs now been reported that Brentford have stolen the march on Tottenham, and Nusa will be signing for the West London club instead.
That might surprise a few given how much pull Postecoglouâs project has, and how interested the club seemed to be.
But Tottenham journalist Alasdair Gold has now been sharing why Nusa made his choice.
Gold took to X just now to explain that Brentford could simply offer Nusa more guaranteed game time in the future.
The journalist also explained the feelings of Nusaâs personal camp, who also preferred a move to Brentford.
Alasdair Gold explains why Antonio Nusa chose Brentford over Tottenham
Sharing his update on X, Gold said: âUnderstand Antonio Nusa chose Brentford because he was guaranteed regular starts there.
âSpurs held talks but for a raw but talented teenager not starting regularly for Club Brugge yet, they couldnât offer such guarantees for next season with their current squad.
âThe player and his camp also felt that moving to one of the bigger clubs was too big a step in his development at this point. Very talented youngster though and should reach that level.â
Of course, this will be considered a blow for Tottenham who looked to be in the driving seat to sign one of Europeâs next big talents.
Tottenham could potentially look to sign Nusa from Brentford in the future once heâs made progress, but that would obviously be at a much higher price.
