STOP THE WAR Emotional Oleksandr Zinchenko breaks down in tears as he calls for an end to the war in Ukraine as he and his teammates aim to put smiles on their compatriots faces against Scotland in World Cup play-off

Manchester City defender Oleksandr Zinchenko broke down in tears as he discussed his dream of reaching the World Cup with Ukraine and the war in his homeland.

Ukraine play Scotland at Hampden Park in a delayed World Cup play-off semi-final and the 25-year-old began his pre-match press conference by thanking the hosts for postponing the game, which was due to be played in March.

And the horrifying scenes in Ukraine, where it has nearly been 100 days since Russian forces invaded, were at the forefront of the conversation in Glasgow where Zinchenko scored for his country in the win against Sweden at Euro 2020.

“Every Ukrainian wants one thing – to stop this war,” he said when asked about that game and the very different situation his nation now finds itself in 12 months on from the Euros.

“I have spoken with people from all around the world, from different countries. I have also spoken to some Ukrainian kids who just don’t understand what’s happening back in Ukraine. They only want the war to stop. They have one dream, to stop the war.

“When it comes to football, the Ukrainian team have their own dream. We want to go to the World Cup, we want to give this incredible emotion to the Ukrainians because Ukrainians deserve it so very much at this moment.”

But he added that he and his team-mates had arrived in Glasgow in a ‘fighting mood’ as they are determined to deliver an achievement to be a source of pride for a beleaguered nation.

Zinchenko, whose team will also need to beat Wales in Cardiff on Sunday to qualify, added: “I’m pretty sure that all Ukraine who has this opportunity is going to watch us, and we are going to feel this support 100 per cent.

As a show of solidarity ahead of the match, a scheme has been launches to help Scotland fans learn the words to Ukraine’s national anthem with it expected to be an emotional night in GlasgowCredit: AFP

“We can speak a lot but we need to do it on the pitch. We are going to try to make them happy and proud.”

He also welcomed a scheme to help Scotland fans learn the Ukrainian national anthem so they can show their solidarity ahead of the match.

“We have to be together, we have to fight Russian aggression, we have to defeat that evil,” he added. “So this is an amazing, amazing initiative.

“A lot of countries maybe don’t understand that today is Ukraine, tomorrow could be you. So that’s why we need to be united and defeat this Russian aggression all together.”

Head coach Oleksandr Petrakov admitted his challenge of keeping his players focused on football, with a range of emotions swirling around their minds, was difficult.

“We use all sorts of methods, even jokes. We motivate people in a light manner. But clearly every player understands how huge the task is,” he said.

“That will make their task even more difficult, working under a lot of stress. But we are trying to do our best and achieve results. The team is fully prepared.”

The majority of his squad is based in the Ukrainian league, which halted for a winter break in December and did not resume after the Russian invasion on February 24.

The match at Hampden will decide which team will play Wales in Cardiff for a spot in the finals, something Scotland has not achieved since 1998.

The winner of that game then gets a spot in a group featuring England, Iran and the United States when the World Cup begins in Qatar later this year.

SERGIO AGUERO couldn’t hold back the tears as he failed to produce a fairytale ending to his glittering Manchester City career.

The Argentine striker was handed 13 minutes to try and produce one last moment of magic in City’s 1-0 final defeat to Chelsea.

But the 32-year-old couldn’t add to his remarkable goal tally as his wait for a Champions League triumph continued.

Aguero’s introduction late in the contest was his 389th appearance and his last for the Premier League champions.

He remains the club’s record scorer with 260 goals in all competitions.

Aguero couldn’t contain his emotions at the full-time whistle as he was left pondering what could have been.

The ex-Atletico Madrid star broke down in tears on the pitch before being consoled by team-mate Phil Foden.

Aguero also looked devastated as he had his head in his hands while wearing the runners-up medal.

The club legend departs the Etihad with 12 major pieces of silverware including five league titles.

But the biggest of all has evaded him yet again.

Aguero will not give up hope of lifting the trophy before hanging up his boots, especially as he closes in on a move to Barcelona.

Reports claim the veteran will reunite with his international compatriot Lionel Messi at the Nou Camp after penning a two-year deal.

Cody Gakpo is loving life at Liverpool as he now targets personal and collective success in his second year at the club.

Thursday marked exactly 12 months since an agreement was reached for the Dutch forward’s transfer from PSV Eindhoven, marking the beginning of his journey at Anfield that has seen him score 14 goals from his half-century of appearances.

Gakpo feels totally settled on Merseyside and credits the love given to him from the supporters as a reason for his quick adaptation period.

The No.18 told Liverpoolfc.com: “A year with obviously really good moments, some lesser-good moments, but I’m happy to be here and hopefully beautiful moments to come.

“I really feel at home and I think the club is amazing. It’s like a big family. The supporters are amazing every game and show love to all of us. I appreciate it and I love being here.”

On his aims for year two, the 24-year-old stated: “I hope to achieve a lot – on a personal level as well. But as a team we have big dreams and big goals. We are working on that.

“I think it always takes some time for every player in a new place to settle a little bit but I felt [at] home quite fast.

“It’s an amazing club and hopefully many more beautiful moments will come for me and for the team.”

Jürgen Klopp’s Reds currently sit top of the Premier League at the halfway point in the campaign.

They begin the new calendar year by welcoming Newcastle United to Anfield on Monday night, with Gakpo and his teammates looking to maintain their occupancy of first place.

He continued: “I think we are doing really good from the beginning of the season and we have a good group.

“This game, even though we are in first place, we just go into this game like it’s a really important game – like every other game.

“Of course it brings pressure to be in the top position in the league but I think we don’t see it like that. We are just really focused on that one game we have to play in that moment, and I think that’s also a strength of the team.

“They [Newcastle] have a really good team. Obviously we have to work really hard, we have to fight together, stick together even through the difficult moments maybe that will come in the game – hopefully not but it’s a world-class team as well.

“It’s hopefully going to be a great game with us on top at the end.”
