Manchester City slash asking price for struggling 28-year-old
Manchester City will cut their losses and accept a cut-price fee for struggling midfielder Kalvin Phillips this summer.

That’s according to a recent report from Football Insider, who claims the Premier League champions are willing to let the midfielder move on for a sum far less than what they paid for him.

The Cityzens signed Phillips, 28, from boyhood club Leeds United just two years ago in a deal worth a reported £42 million, but after starting just five Premier League matches since his switch, the Englishman has failed to replace Rodri in the heart of Pep Guardiola’s midfield.

Manchester City slash Kalvin Phillips asking price following disastrous transfer
And despite being allowed to leave the Etihad and spend the second half of last season on loan with West Ham, the ex-Leeds star’s poor form saw him dropped by David Moyes before missing out on Gareth Southgate’s final 26-man squad for the EUROs.

Man City Pep Guardiola Kalvin Phillips
Kalvin Phillips has endured a torrid two years at Man City.
Consequently, in a desperate attempt to get his faltering career back on track, Phillips would undoubtedly welcome a new challenge. And City appear not to be standing in the midfielder’s way with the 10-time league winners willing to accept just £20 million for the 28-year-old.

The England international has led these rankings for most of the season, and thoroughly deserves to win the prize

Arsenal pushed Manchester City hard in the Premier League title race last season, before Pep Guardiola’s side’s superior resources and elite mentality allowed them to pull away and eventually secure a famous treble. This time around, the Gunners have done the same again, with Mikel Arteta’s side still in with a shot of ending their trophy drought going into the final day.

To keep pace with Guardiola’s charges, Arsenal have had to get even better this season, with their recent victory over Manchester United making sure they have now improved their previous seasons’ points tally in each of Arteta’s full campaigns at the helm. As well as getting stronger as a collective, the players have also undergone a process of rapid, individual development.

And over the last few months, GOAL has been tracking all of the runners and riders for Arsenal’s Player of the Season award. Now, it’s finally time to assess who most deserves to receive the prestigious honour at the end of the campaign – and it’s very tight at the top…

JURRIEN TIMBER ARSENAL PREMIER LEAGUE 12082023Getty Images
22Jurrien Timber (N/A) ↔️
Timber looked like being an ideal addition to Mikel Arteta’s backline when he arrived from Ajax for £40 million ($49.5m) this summer. He performed well in the Community Shield, but an ACL injury sustained in the Gunners’ Premier League opener against Nottingham Forest condemned him to a season on the sidelines.

Aaron Ramsdale Arsenal 2023-24Getty Images
21Aaron Ramsdale (2/10) ↔️
Ramsdale would have been sweating when David Raya was signed in the summer, and his fears were justified. Following a sketchy display against Fulham, Raya replaced him against Everton and the Spaniard hasn’t relinquished the gloves since.

Publicly, Arteta outlined a utopian vision where the pair would rotate – sometimes even during a game. However, it’s pretty clear who the No.1 is and it’s not Ramsdale. The situation initially created plenty of debate, and the England international had his supporters, but now almost everyone has accepted that Raya represents a significant upgrade. It’s time for Ramsdale to move on.

Reiss Nelson Arsenal 2023-24Getty Images
20Reiss Nelson (2.5/10) ↔️
The Arsenal youth-team graduate continues to struggle to break into the senior side. Nelson has earned a handful of starts, notably setting up Eddie Nketiah’s goal in a Champions League dead rubber against PSV, but generally this season has represented a step backwards after a 2022-23 campaign which included some iconic moments.

The winger is rarely a detriment to the side when he does come on, but he’s hardly set the world alight either. Now 24, you’d imagine he’ll be looking to depart in the summer, even though he has signed a new contract fairly recently.

Fabio Vieira Arsenal 2023Getty Images
19Fabio Vieira (3/10) ⬇️
After a pretty uninspiring debut season at the Emirates, Vieira seemingly came out with a point to prove this campaign. Establishing his reputation as one of Arteta’s second-half ‘finishers’ early on, he provided assists in successive Premier League matches against Fulham and Manchester United.

However, he could not maintain that momentum. Vieira soon dropped out of the starting XI and was then dealt a double blow, seeing red against Burnley in November before picking up a serious groin injury. Those issues essentially ended his season, with the midfielder scarcely being seen again.

Emile Smith Rowe 2023-24Getty Images
18Emile Smith Rowe (3.5/10) ⬆️
It’s hard not to feel a little sorry for Smith Rowe. After impressing at the European Under-21 Championship over the summer, he would have been hopeful of tasting some more first-team action this season.

However, his minutes have largely come in the form of late cameos, aside from a decent outing against Sheffield United in October – after which his momentum was halted by an untimely injury – and a rare start against struggling Luton in April. A summer exit seems likely.

Eddie Nketiah Arsenal Nottingham Forest 2023-24 Premier LeagueGetty
17Eddie Nketiah (4/10) ⬇️
Linked with a move away from the Emirates during the summer, Nketiah stuck around and was rewarded with an extended run in the starting XI at the beginning of the season. His involvement tailed off after that, with the hat-trick he bagged against Sheffield United in October representing the last time he would net this season.

It seems highly unlikely that he will stick around beyond the summer, and the fact that he’s hardly played towards the tail-end of the campaign will have done little to increase his transfer value.

20230722_Thomas_Partey(C)Getty images
16Thomas Partey (4.5/10) ⬆️
We shouldn’t sugar coat it – this has been a largely disastrous season for Partey. Injuries have reduced him to a ghost-like figure in the Gunners ranks for the majority of the campaign, and he missed AFCON too.

If it wasn’t for his very recent return to the first team coinciding with some of Arsenal’s best midfield displays of the season, he’d be even further down this list. His future remains uncertain ahead of the summer, which is pretty startling considering how indispensable he seemed during the relatively recent past.

Oleksandr Zinchenko 2023-24Getty Images
15Oleksandr Zinchenko (5.5/10) ↔️
Zinchenko’s pre-season was disrupted by a calf injury – an event that set the tone for a testing campaign. In his maiden year in north London, he earned rave reviews for his technical prowess, with his in-possession contributions from an inverted full-back role helping his side pull apart their opposition.

But as the campaign has progressed, concerns have increasingly been raised about Zinchenko’s defending and decision-making. He now has more critics than defenders within the fanbase, and has only sparingly featured since struggling in a damaging 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa in April.

20231111 Mikel Arteta Takehiro Tomiyasu(C)Getty Images
14Takehiro Tomiyasu (6/10) ↔️
Tomiyasu is a useful member of the Arsenal squad, thanks to his defensive versatility. However, he’s endured somewhat of a stop-start season this time out, thanks to both fitness issues and his involvement in the Asian Cup with Japan.

After a strong start to the campaign, he looked a little unconvincing on his return from injury in March, though he’s found himself back in the starting XI more recently and has fared pretty well. He’ll be hoping to be available for the duration next season.

Gabriel Jesus Arsenal 2023-24Getty Images
13Gabriel Jesus (6/10) ⬇️
Niggling injuries have plagued Jesus’ season, but even when fully fit, the Brazilian has not quite been at his best, especially in the second half of the campaign. As always, his finishing has been far from world-class, though – as we’ve heard many times before – his all-round game often makes up for his lack of goals.

The fact he missed out on Brazil’s Copa America squad speaks to his slightly underwhelming campaign and it may even be time for the club to consider moving him on. He seems unlikely to regain his starting spot and Arsenal need to sell him now before he starts losing his value.

Jakub Kiwior Arsenal 2023-24Getty Images
12Jakub Kiwior (6/10) ⬆️
Following an extremely quiet start to the season, injuries saw Kiwior enjoy an extended run in the first team at left-back. After struggling in the same role previously, he began to look far more comfortable as the season wore on. The Poland international has looked dependable, if not overly flashy, and should have shown enough to earn a similar role next campaign.

Gabriel Martinelli Arsenal 2023-24Getty Images
11Gabriel Martinelli (6/10) ↔️
Martinelli had to wait a while for his first Premier League goal of the season, but it was well worth the delay, coming in the dying stages of his side’s massive victory over Man City.

However, all in all, the Brazilian will be disappointed with his numbers, particularly in the second half of the season, with Leandro Trossard even stealing his place in the starting XI recently.

Jorginho Declan Rice Arsenal 2023-24Getty Images
10Jorginho (7/10) ↔️
Jorginho received criticism after both the Man City and Chelsea games in the autumn, though playing through those midfields was always going to be a challenge. He was pretty good after that, though, cutting a stubborn Sevilla side open with a sumptuous assist in the Champions League and even wearing the captain’s armband against Newcastle and Burnley.

He also proved he still belongs in the biggest games, starring in the Gunners’ huge win over Liverpool in February, though he was less eye-catching in the two legs of the Bayern Munich tie. Regardless, he was more than deserving of the new contract handed to him in May.

Kai Havertz Arsenal 2024Getty Images
9Kai Havertz (7.5/10) ↔️
After being widely mocked during his first few months as a Gunner, Havertz has managed to silence his critics over the past few months. The German comfortably reached double figures for goals in the end, while also chipping in with a string of important assists.

More than that, though, Havertz has begun to prove that he could be the man to lead the line for Arteta going forward. His physicality and clever movement helps get the best out of those around him, which may convince the club to decline the opportunity to spend big on a No.9 this summer.

David Raya Arsenal 2023-24Getty
8David Raya (7.5/10) ↔️
It’s clear why Arteta likes Raya, despite the controversy his arrival caused. His competence on the ball has drastically improved Arsenal’s build up – and the mistakes that punctuated his early Emirates career are becoming less and less frequent. He’s not quite Player of the Season material, but the Premier League Golden Glove winner deserves immense credit for answering his doubters so emphatically.

Leandro Trossard Arsenal Manchester United 2023-24Getty Images
7Leandro Trossard (7.5/10) ↔️
Trossard has squeezed everything he possibly could out of his limited minutes this season. In the Premier League, he has averaged 0.69 goals per 90, a better rate than Golden Boot contenders Ollie Watkins, Dominic Solanke and Phil Foden have managed.

He’s popped up with some vital Champions League strikes too, netting in a hard-fought victory over Sevilla, in the last 16 against Porto and then in an exciting quarter-final first-leg clash with Bayern Munich. Take away these contributions and the Gunners’ second half of the campaign looks strikingly different.

Ben White Arsenal 2023-24Getty Images
6Ben White (8/10) ↔️
How gutting must it have been for England boss Gareth Southgate to watch White put in the performances that he has this season? Although his prospects of making an international return seem remote, the ex-Brighton man has been one of the best full-backs in Europe this season.

Defensively, he is elite, with a long list of top-class wide men struggling to get any joy against White. His attacking contributions have been solid too, with Arsenal fans having a lot of love for Mr Consistent.

Gabriel Arsenal 2023-24Getty Images
5Gabriel Magalhaes (8.5/10) ↔️
After it appeared that Arteta had gone off him in the early weeks of the campaign, Gabriel has been in the first team for the majority of the season. During this time, he has taken his game to the next level, forming one half of the best centre-back pairing in England alongside William Saliba.

He’s proved to be a potent weapon from set-pieces too, netting four times, including twice against Crystal Palace back in January. The turnaround has been quite incredible, considering he seemed to be out of favour at the beginning of the season.

Martin Odegaard Arsenal 2023-24Getty Images
4Martin Odegaard (8.5/10) ↔️
The heartbeat of this Arsenal side last season, Odegaard was affected by injuries in November. Even before this setback, his goal and assist numbers were significantly down, though he has turned his fortunes around in the second half of the season.

The Norwegian knits everything together for Arsenal in the final third and his unparalleled passing ability has lit up the Emirates over the past few months. He’s also scored some important goals and continues to repay the faith shown in him by Arteta when he named the midfielder club captain back in 2022.

Saliba(C)Getty Images
3William Saliba (8.5/10) ↔️
Arsenal missed Saliba dearly when he was sidelined at the end of last season, and Arteta will be mightily relieved to have had him back for the run-in this year. We know what to expect from the Frenchman by now and he has delivered a string of solid performances at the back this campaign.

A rare error against Liverpool and a couple of shaky Champions League displays aside, Saliba has been pretty much perfect. He is one of the biggest reasons why Arsenal have been so fearsome defensively and will no doubt be included in the Premier League Team of the Season.

Saka-ArsenalGetty
2Bukayo Saka (8.5/10) ↔️
Still only 22, Saka continues to solidify his reputation as one of the most productive widemen in Europe. His goals were particularly important during the opening stretch of the season, when Arsenal were still figuring out their best configuration up front. Throughout this period, Saka was consistently decisive, and he was similarly influential during January and February, when he enjoyed a run of eight goals in just seven Premier League games.

Despite often being on the receiving end of some meaty tackles, and Arteta being reluctant to ever hand him a proper rest, he has managed to remain available for pretty much the entire campaign. He probably hasn’t always got the credit he’s deserved this season, but there’s little doubt that he’s been Arsenal’s best attacker.

Declan Rice Arsenal 2023-24Getty Images
1Declan Rice (9/10) ↔️
There were questions asked when Arsenal spent over £100m ($127m) on Rice this summer – but he’s proved to be well worth that hefty investment. His dramatic stoppage-time strike against Manchester United sent the Emirates into delirium back in September, and he’s flown in north London since then.

Starting out as Arteta’s deepest midfielder, his dominant displays made Gunners fans forget all about the absent Partey, while the second half of the campaign has allowed Rice to show his attacking capabilities in a No.8 position.

To do all of this in his first season at the club, and with the pressure of that massive transfer fee hanging over him, is nothing short of phenomenal. That’s why he deserves to just edge out the likes of Saka, Saliba and Odegaard for top spot.

The Los Angeles Lakers have long been a pundit favorite to trade for three-time All-Star point guard Trae Young of the Atlanta Hawks, though that appears to have changed.

ESPN’s Zach Lowe and Kevin Pelton co-hosted the July 15 version of “The Lowe Post” podcast, during which they discussed what it would take for Los Angeles to procure Young — who is playing on a five-year, $215.2 million max contract — from Atlanta and whether that prospect currently interests the Lakers brass.

“If the Lakers were going to offer all of their picks including now Dalton Knecht, and some other good stuff, Trae Young could be on the Lakers right now,” Lowe said. “Those deals haven’t happened. I’ve heard teams have cooled off on him, and here we are.”

Los Angeles can trade unprotected first-rounders in both 2029 and 2031 along with Knecht, who the franchise picked with the No. 17 overall selection in the 2024 NBA draft. Young will earn north of $43 million next season, so D’Angelo Russell and the nearly $19 million remaining on his contract would probably have to be part of the deal as salary filler.

However, some of the other “good stuff” to which Lowe refers could be young talent like Max Christie, who the Lakers inked to a four-year extension worth $32 million this offseason.

Trae Young of the Atlanta Hawks (left) and LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers (right) play against one another during an NBA game.

That the Lakers and other franchises around the league have chilled in their respective pursuits of Young doesn’t mean things can’t heat up again.

LeBron James has been successfully convincing organizations to sacrifice young talent and draft capital for win-now players since his first stint with the Cleveland Cavaliers more than 15 years ago. James turns 40 in December and has been carrying the offensive load for the Lakers since he arrived there six seasons past.

Young is on the brink of his age-26 campaign and averages 25.5 points and 9.5 assists for his career, including 25.7 points and 10.8 assists for the Hawks last season. Not only could Young alleviate James of his point guard duties when the two are on the floor together, he could shoulder a huge portion of the playmaking responsibilities James has been forced to undertake for years considering the limited options around him.

James posted a usage rate of 29.1% last season, which ranked 18th in the league, while navigating most of the campaign (his 21st as a professional) at the age of 39 — making him the oldest player in the NBA. The four-time MVP was still able to play in 71 games for the Lakers despite that offensive burden, though it is difficult to imagine that combination of usage and health is sustainable for any extended period given the tread already on James’ proverbial tires.

James played 56 or fewer contests in four of the five previous campaigns though, in fairness, the COVID-19 virus and its ramifications shortened two of them.

Man City are in pole position to sign RB Leipzig’s Dani Olmo following new talks, sources have told Football Insider.

The 26-year-old has revealed that a move away from the Bundesliga club could be on the cards with “several options” available to him.

The Premier League champions are the favourites to secure Olmo’s signature but must fend off stiff competition from Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

Olmo had a £51 million release clause in his contract which expired on Monday, July 15. Man City decided not to activate it but are still working on signing the attacking midfielder.

Pep Guardiola wants to add Olmo to impressive Man City squad
Olmo was one of Euro 2024’s standout performers in Germany, finishing as the joint winner of the Golden Boot.

Good with his feet and technically strong, he excelled in the number ten role, playing just ahead of midfielder Rodri and Fabian Ruiz, providing key assists to Alvaro Morata, Yamine Lamal, and Nico Williams

The Spaniard also helps out defensively as shown with a last-gasp goal-line clearance from England defender Marc Guehi’s header in the last few minutes of the final.

During his time at RB Leipzig, Olmo has made 148 appearances, scoring 29 goals and supplying 34 assists. Operating in multiple attacking roles last season, his 25 appearances yielded eight goals and five assists.

Adding Olmo to the likes of Bernardo Silva, Phil Foden, and Kevin de Bruyne would give the champions plenty of options going into the new season.

The attacking midfielder has a €60m release clause which is valid until July 20th and it hasn’t been activated so far.

Thursday’s edition of Mundo Deportivo talks about Manchester City’s interest in the 26-year-old when discussing Barcelona’s efforts to try and sign him this summer.

The La Liga side are keen on signing both the Spain international and Athletic star Nico Williams this summer.

On Tuesday, Barca director Deco met with Olmo’s agent Juanma López in Barcelona, and already made progress with the representative over his client’s personal terms. His side are not alone and this is when Manchester City and Bayern Munich are mentioned.
It’s claimed Olmo has ‘good offers’ from Manchester City and Bayern. Offers from Pep Guardiola’s side and the Bavarian club are both financially superior for the €60m player.

Atlético Madrid have become the latest club to join the race, and initiated contact over signing the Leipzig star. Mundo say he would prioritise Manchester City, Bayern and Barca over Diego Simeone’s side, unless they make an irrefutable offer.

Last week, Bild stated Leipzig are willing to sell Olmo for €60m if his clause isn’t activated by Saturday. This allows Olmo’s suitors to spread the payment instead of paying the full amount in one go.

Newcastle 1-0 Man Utd: Magpies move fifth as Gordon strike hauls them above United, Spurs
News Desk 02 Dec 2023 10:13 PM
Anthony Gordon, Newcastle United, December 2023
Anthony Gordon celebrates scoring Newcastle United winner
A solitary Newcastle United goal, scored by Anthony Gordon, moved them past opponents Manchester United and Tottenham in their sixth-straight Premier League victory at St James’ Park.

The Magpies, who returned from Paris St Germain in midweek bitterly disappointed with a 1-1 Champions League draw, dominated for all but the final few minutes and perhaps should have secured the points in more emphatic fashion with Kieran Trippier seeing a first-half free-kick come back off the crossbar.

However, Gordon’s 55th-minute finish – the fourth-successive home league game in which he has scored – proved sufficient to clinch a 1-0 win and send Eddie Howe’s side above the Red Devils in the table, although his joy was tempered by a potentially-serious injury to goalkeeper Nick Pope.

Manchester United, who had thrown away a 3-1 lead at Galatasaray to draw 3-3 on Wednesday evening, created little of note – they saw a late goal ruled out after Antony’s shot had clipped Harry Maguire in an offside position – as their run of five wins in six league games came to an end in front of a crowd of 52,214.

Under-fire goalkeeper Andre Onana and Diogo Dalot got themselves in a tangle as they attempted to deal with a Gordon cross, although opposite number Pope had to repel Alejandro Garnacho’s 11th-minute attempt with a well-placed foot after Bruno Fernandes’ superb pass had played him in behind Trippier.

Garnacho became an increasing threat down the Magpies’ right as Manchester United started to impose themselves, but Luke Shaw had to block Alexander Isak’s 15th-minute effort after Trippier had fizzed the ball into his feet inside the penalty area.

Onana saved from Miguel Almiron following a neat one-two between Joelinton and Trippier, while Guimaraes smashed an 18th-minute shot over from distance after Tino Livramento had surged forward down the left and cut the ball back.

The visitors were creaking and Maguire had to be in the right place at the right time to deflect Isak’s goal-bound effort wide before Jamaal Lascelles headed over from the resulting corner.

Playmaker Fernandes did his best to drag Erik ten Hag’s men into the game, but too often the men ahead of him were not equal to the task and they continued to look less than certain at the back with Isak firing wide 12 minutes before the break after Aaron Wan-Bissaka had headed Fabian Schar’s long ball straight to him.

Almiron curled an attempt over the angle of post and crossbar after cutting inside Dalot from Trippier’s through-ball, but Onana enjoyed the kind of fortune which has eluded him in recent weeks when Trippier rattled the crossbar with a 39th-minute free-kick after Maguire had felled Schar 25 yards out.

Livramento, whose scything run led to Isak’s goal at Paris St Germain, almost repeated the dose two minutes after the restart when he set up Almiron, but saw the Paraguay international’s shot half-blocked to allow Onana to save comfortably.

The keeper was finally beaten seconds later when Guimaraes rolled the ball into Trippier’s path and he crossed low to the far post for Gordon to score.

Schar whistled a shot from distance a foot over Onana’s crossbar as the home side looked to kill the game off, and Ten Hag responded by replacing Marcus Rashford and Martial with Antony and Rasmus Hojlund.

Antony added vigour to a side in desperate need of inspiration, but to little real effect and Wan-Bissaka survived penalty appeals for handball after blocking Lewis Miley’s shot with 12 minutes remaining.

Schar had to throw his body into the path of Sergio Reguilon’s well-struck 82nd-minute volley, although Pope’s evening ended in agony as he was led from the pitch having suffered an injury as he dived in anticipation behind the defender.

Replacement Martin Dubravka was beaten with two minutes of normal time left on the clock, but an offside flag came to the tiring Magpies’ rescue and they safely negotiated nine minutes of stoppage-time to claim victory.

Dan Ashworth is close to sealing his second summer signing as Manchester United sporting director.
The 53-year-old started work at Old Trafford earlier this month after Newcastle United agreed to release him from his contract for a “confidential” sum. Ashworth had been on gardening since February after signalling his intention to join the Red Devils less than two years since moving to St James’ Park from Brighton & Hove Albion.

The Magpies wasted no time in announcing Ashworth’s replacement with former Tottenham Hotspur and Monaco chief Paul Mitchell viewed as a huge coup. News on potential incomings is expected soon as Mitchell and Howe work together. At Old Trafford however, Ashworth has already begun splashing the cash.

On Sunday, Man United confirmed the arrival of Joshua Zirkzee on a five-year deal from Italian side Bologna for a reported £36.5million.

Speaking about the Dutchman’s arrival, Ashworth said: “Securing a forward to enhance our already strong group of attacking players was a key aim for this summer. We are delighted that we’ve managed to sign a player of Joshua’s calibre this early in the transfer window.

“Joshua is an outstanding talent who is ready to make an impact for Manchester United. His ability and desire to grow into a world-class player means that he will be a great addition to the squad that we are building for the exciting season ahead and beyond.

“Having already achieved a significant amount in his career, we will provide Joshua with the perfect platform to reach the next level under the guidance and support of Erik ten Hag and the coaching staff. We look forward to seeing Joshua thrive at Old Trafford over the coming years.”

And next through the door is expected to be Lille centre-back Leny Yoro. As per The Athletic, the 18-year-old is flying to England to discuss personal terms and undergo a medical ahead of completing a staggering £52m transfer.

It’s understood Yoro’s original preference was to join Real Madrid but they have so far shown no indication of paying the price that Man United and Lille settled on.

D’Angelo Russell #1 of the Los Angeles Lakers talks to Rui Hachimura #28 in the fourth quarter against the Sacramento Kings.

After missing out on their free-agent targets, the Los Angeles Lakers are pivoting to the trade market to add an impact player.

The Athletic’s Jovan Buha reported on July 16 that such a move is still in play before the new season tips off.

“The Lakers expect to make a consolidation trade at some point, though that could come closer to the start of the season, according to league sources,” Buha wrote.

The Lakers have struck out from their initial free-agent targets Klay Thompson, Jonas Valanciunas and James Harden to their backup plans DeMar DeRozan and Gary Trent Jr.

Trent was the latest miss for the Lakers as the prolific 3-point shooter opted to sign with the Milwaukee Bucks on a one-year veteran minimum deal, per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Why Lakers Are Stuck in the Mud?
Buha pinned the blame on the Lakers doling out player options instead of team options to their offseason signings last year.

“One of the reasons the Lakers have been unable to make any signings and had to explore trades is that four roster holdovers who were given second-year player options last summer — D’Angelo Russell, Christian Wood, Jaxson Hayes and Cam Reddish — opted in due to their performances last season and the tight free-agent market,” Buha wrote.

Of the four players, only Russell ($18.7 million) holds value as a salary ballast in a trade for an impact player who earns similar or less money.

With the four holdovers picking up their player options, the Lakers roster is currently full which made it impossible for them to go after Trent even if they have the $5.2 million taxpayer midlevel exception to offer.

The Lakers have to offload some of them to create a roster spot and use the midlevel exception.

JJ Redicks’ Wish List: ‘Big, Bruising Man’
After missing out on Valanciunas, Redick still hopes the Lakers could get a center of a similar ilk via trade to ease the defensive burden on Anthony Davis.

“You certainly have to look at what I think is actually a very good roster, a very balanced roster, Redick said in an interview with Justin Termine and Eddie Johnson on Sirius XM NBA Radio. “We’d love to, we tried, but we’d love to, at some point, get another five man, a big bruising five man.

“You look at the Western Conference right now, whether it’s Denver, Minnesota, OKC with what they added, certainly Memphis, they’re going to be back in the hunt, they added Zach Edey, certain matchups in the playoffs, you’re going to need a lot of size.”

Redick wants to add size to counter Nuggets‘ three-time MVP Nikola Jokic, Timberwolves‘ Defensive Player of the Year Rudy Gobert and Thunder’s Chet Holmgren and free agent acquisition Isaiah Hartenstein.

Lakers Add G League Coach of the Year
The Lakers have beefed up Redick’s coaching staff by hiring G League Coach of the Year Lindsey Hardin, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Harding, 39, coached the Stockton Kings to the Western Conference Finals of the G League last season after working as a player development coach for the Philadelphia 76ers and Sacramento Kings.

She joins former NBA head coaches Nate McMillan and Scott Brooks and holdover Greg St. Jean, who started as a player development coach under Frank Vogel during the Lakers’ championship run in 2020.

Harding and Redick are reunited in Los Angeles after spending time together in Philadelphia and at Duke.

As Duke stars, Redick (2006) and Harding (2007) won the Naismith College Player of the Year in their decorated college careers. Harding was a player development coach when Redick played for the 76ers from 2017 to 2019.

Trae Young Would Ease Offensive Burden on LeBron James

A week ago, we covered claims from Spain that Manchester City have ‘emerged with force’ in the race for RB Leipzig’s Dani Olmo.
