President confirms Liverpool ‘working on’ Alonso agreement alongside two European rivals

Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern target Xabi Alonso looks on before a match.
Bayer Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso looks on before a match.
Liverpool are “working on” a deal to appoint Bayer Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso, according to Bayern Munich’s honorary president Uli Hoeness.

Alonso is reportedly Liverpool’s top managerial target with Jurgen Klopp set to leave at the end of the season.

Liverpool ‘working on’ Alonso appointment
The job Klopp has done at Anfield will make it extremely difficult to fill his shoes but the form Leverkusen have been playing this season indicates that the Spaniard is the most capable.

There are also links to Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi, Sporting’s Ruben Amorim, and Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann, who will likely step down from his role after this summer’s European Championships.

It is not going to be easy for the Reds to get their man, however, with Bayern Munich also extremely interested.

Like Klopp, Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel will step down at the end of 2023/24, meaning the Bundesliga champions are looking for a new manager and are also reportedly targeting Alonso.

Alonso has also been linked with Real Madrid and will find it difficult to choose between all three clubs having played for them all.

Madrid are lurking in the background and have the lure other clubs can only dream of, making them a danger to Liverpool and Bayern, even if they appear to be willing to keep hold of Carlo Ancelotti for now.

While there has not been as much talk of a move to Los Blancos, Bayern’s honorary president Hoeness has confirmed they are “working on” the appointment, alongside his club and Liverpool.

“He’s [Alonso’s] proven that he can be a coach for the big time,” he German outlet Ran Sport.

“Clubs like Liverpool, Real Madrid, Leverkusen and FC Bayern are working on it.”

On Bayern’s managerial search, Hoeness added: “There are hardly any coaches who come into question who are currently free, who don’t have a job or who are on sabbatical.

“It’s not so easy to tell them that FC Bayern is the measure of all things.”

Liverpool vs Leverkusen in Europa League final?
The football gods were looking over the Europa League draw when Liverpool and Leverkusen were put on separate sides, meaning they can only meet in the final of the competition.

Although others may disagree and say we have been robbed of seeing two great teams face off twice, it will be some spectacle in Dublin if it is Alonso against his potential future employers.

Speaking last week, Alonso did admit that the Reds are the “clear” favourites to win the competition.

“For me it’s clear, I really see Liverpool as the favourites to win the Europa League,” he said.

Liverpool now interested in signing £85m Brazil international who Zinedine Zidane loves

After Richard Hughes’ arrival as new sporting director, it’s time for Liverpool to really ramp up their recruitment.

In the immediate future, that means identifying and securing the successor to Jurgen Klopp. With Hughes the man tasked with that most important of jobs, he’s facing a baptism of fire.

But beyond the obvious need for a new manager, Liverpool will likely make one or two additions to the playing squad this summer, too.

As a result, links have already long since started to appear in the press. For the time being, a new forward seems to be near the top of the requirements, with Donyell Malen one of those said to be on the radar.

Liverpool eyeing summer additions
As well as Malen, other names are beginning to circulate as being of interest to Liverpool.

And according to Spanish outlet SPORT, Real Madrid’s Rodrygo Goes is – surprisingly – one of those being eyed up. With Madrid set to sign Kylian Mbappe, Rodrygo will reportedly have a more reduced role at the Bernabeu.

As a result, this has reportedly led to Liverpool ‘keeping a close eye’ on his situation. They’re seemingly not alone in that though, with Manchester’s United and City as well as Arsenal all doing the same.

It seems that the Premier League giants will all come up empty handed, however. Getting Rodrygo out of Madrid is claimed to be ‘mission impossible’ unless the Brazilian himself asks to leave. Despite his reduced status, the £85m-rated forward is reportedly not planning to go anytime soon.

Why do Liverpool want Rodrygo
If there’s any chance at all that Rodrygo is on the market this summer, then you could understand why Liverpool would be keen on him.

On the face of it, the Reds don’t really need another forward. But with question marks over the futures of Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz, there could be room for another addition.

The case of Diaz in particular is interesting. PSG are said to have ‘real’ interest in the Colombian and Rodrygo could be a natural replacement.

Skilful, capable of scoring goals and versatile across the front-line, the Brazil international would be a tremendous acquistion.

When the likes of Zinedine Zidane have been left in awe of your quality [The Daily Mail], then you must have something special.

Obviously, signing Rodrygo this summer seems like a near impossibility right now. But you never know with these things. If Mbappe does arrive as expected, then there isn’t room for everyone. It’s well worth Liverpool asking the question.

Liverpool look set to beat Man Utd to Teun Koopmeiners

Liverpool have reportedly ‘set their sights’ on signing Atalanta attacking midfielder Teun Koopmeiners, who is also a target for Manchester United.

Jurgen Klopp completely revamped his midfield last summer by bringing in Ryan Gravenberch, Wataru Endo, Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister.

The quartet have played a big role in Liverpool’s success this season as they aim to beat Manchester City and Arsenal to the Premier League title.

However, it’s thought that the Reds are keen to bring in one more player to strengthen the middle of the park and Koopmeiners is at the top of their shortlist.

As previously reported by TEAMtalk, Liverpool look set to battle with bitter rivals Man Utd for the signature of the Atalanta star this summer.

Casemiro and Christian Eriksen have been linked with departures from Old Trafford, meaning the Red Devils will also have to strengthen in midfield.

Koopmeiners certainly has the quality to play for both clubs, having scored an impressive 10 goals in 25 Serie A appearances this season.

Liverpool ‘first in the race’ for Koopmeiners
According to Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport, Liverpool have ‘set their sights’ on signing Koopmeiners this summer and are ‘first and foremost’ in the race for his signature.

A versatile player, Koopmeiners has the ability to play as a defensive, central and attacking midfielder, so could provide cover in multiple positions for the Merseyside giants.

The report notes that Atalanta initially valued the 26-year-old at £34m but following his impressive performances amid the interest of several top sides, they have decided to increase his price tag to around £43m.

It’s claimed that if Koopmeiners performs well at the Euros for the Netherlands then his valuation could increase even more.

In a recent interview, the Dutchman suggested he’d love to join an English side this summer.

“My fiancée and I are having a great time in Italy, but for some clubs in England I could even bear the rainy days there,” he told De Telegraaf.

“I hope options present themselves so I can think about it. I hope Atalanta gets a good fees for me, because I had a wonderful time in Bergamo.

“I would be lying if I said I didn’t hear the news about the interest from Premier League clubs.”

It will be interesting to see if Liverpool are willing to match Koopmeiners’ £43m price tag in the coming months. If not, Man Utd will be poised to swoop for his signature.

Richard Hughes Will Lose Liverpool Trio ‘Expected to Leave’

Matip’s injury leaves a void in defence, with Thiago and Adrian playing less of a role for the Merseyside club.
Liverpool trio Joel Matip, Thiago Alcantara, and Adrian are all out of contract in the summer transfer window and are expected to leave the club, leaving Richard Hughes with some gaps to fill in the market.

Hughes was recently confirmed as Liverpool’s new sporting director and he is set for a busy first window at Anfield. The Reds will be hoping to bring in reinforcements in order to improve their chances of winning the Premier League title next season, and Hughes is likely to be overseeing their recruitment when the market opens once again later this year.

Thiago, Matip, and Adrian Expected to Leave
Hughes will need to plug the gaps
Thiago, Matip, and Adrian are all out of contract at the end of the season, leaving the Merseyside club with a decision to make on whether to extend their current deals. The Athletic reporter James Pearce, speaking on The Daily Football Briefing podcast, has confirmed that the Liverpool trio are expected to depart in the summer…

“There’s going to be ins and outs, of course there will be, in the summer. Hughes will need to establish exactly where every player is at in terms of their appetite to be part of the next era at Liverpool. You’ve got gaps that need to be filled with Thiago, Matip, and Adrian all expected to leave at the end of their contracts.”

Although the aforementioned trio haven’t played key roles under Jurgen Klopp this season, Hughes will be tasked with finding replacements to fill out the squad. Thiago has spent the majority of the campaign injured with Klopp barely being able to utilise the Spanish midfielder this term, so it might not be a major priority to replace him. Adrian is currently the third-choice goalkeeper, but the Reds are just a couple of injuries away between the sticks from a crisis if they don’t bring in a new addition.

Matip suffered a serious knee injury earlier in the campaign, which has left Klopp short of options at the back, so replacing him could be an important task for Hughes. His absence throughout the season has allowed Klopp to utilise young defender Jarrel Quansah more often than he might have hoped, with the young centre-back thrown in at the deep end.

Van Dijk, Alexander-Arnold, and Salah could leave
Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Mohamed Salah are all out of contract during the summer of 2025, meaning it could be an important year in deciding their futures. If the Reds are unable to tie them down to new deals, then they could be forced to offload them this summer to avoid them leaving on free transfers.

Hughes will be tasked with looking to extend the deals of the key trio, and it’s an important job for the former Bournemouth director considering how key they’ve been to Liverpool’s success. Appointing the right manager to replace Klopp could be imperative to convincing some of their current squad to stick around.
