Roberto Firmino breaks down in tears after crucial late goal in last Liverpool home game

Roberto Firmino broke down in tears following his final game at Anfield after his late equaliser kept Liverpool’s Champions League hopes alive.

The Reds were trailing 1-0 to Aston Villa and looked set to blow any chance they had of climbing into the top four at the expense of Newcastle or Manchester United. But the Brazilian saved the day by converting a Mo Salah cross in the 89th minute. It was his 110th and potentially final goal for the club.

Liverpool, who have just one game left at relegated Southampton, are still outsiders for the top four and a point for Man United and Newcastle in their penultimate matches in midweek will condemn the Reds to Europa League football.

But at the final whistle, the focus was on Firmino, who was moved to tears as he was given a standing ovation and serenaded by the popular chant in his name.

Many of the Liverpool fans were just as emotional, with one tweeting: “Anfield didn’t get three points to keep the hope of Champions League qualification alive (realistically). But Anfield got Salah to Firmino one last time in Firmino’s last dance in front of the Kop.”

Another declared: “Scoring the equaliser with both feet in the air is the most Firmino thing you’ll ever see. Best Brazilian to grace the PL. What a player.”

A third pointed out: “Bobby Firmino assisted Mo Salah 1st Liverpool goal, Mo Salah sets up Firmino’s last goal at Anfield. It was just meant to be.”
