Manchester United’s next signing is one of a kind with £47m deal close

Inter Milan will get ‘weaker’ if Andre Onana joins Manchester United with the Premier League-bound goalkeeper very much one of a kind, according to former Serie A stopper Sebastian Frey.

Is today the day? Fabrizio Romano left us all hanging on Thursday night – a deal between Manchester United and Inter Milan almost agreed but those three magic words yet to arrive – but Andre Onana is now all-but certain to be on the plane to the USA when Erik ten Hag’s side kick-up their pre-season preparations next week.

The deal, Romano says, is now ‘more than close’.

United are reportedly paying £42 million – rising to £47 million – for one of the most complete goalkeepers in the game; a superb shot-stopper and a pinpoint distributor rolled into one. The Shocking Downfall of the German National Team

Manchester United finally close in on Andre Onana deal
“Is Inzaghi’s team weakening? Technically, yes. There are none like him around,” Frey, who spent three years at Inter between 1998 and 2021, tells ItaSport Press.

“Even in terms of leadership, the Nerazzurri lose a lot. But on an economic level, the deal is better for Inter.”

Inter Milan have been linked with Hugo Lloris – free to leave Tottenham Hotspur after the signing of former Nerazzuri target Guglielmo Vicario – but Sky Italia reporter Gianluca di Marzio reports that Bayern Munich veteran Yann Sommer is now the most likely Onana replacement at the San Siro.

“Sommer? He convinces me,” Frey says of the former Borussia Monchengladbach talisman. “I think he’s the goalkeeper with international experience that Inter needs.”

Ajax connection
Onana won the Eredivisie title under Ten Hag at Ajax back in 2022. The former Barcelona youngster – who honed his supreme technical skills at the fabled La Masia academy – will also be reunited with former Johan Cruyff Arena team-mates Lisandro Martinez and Antony at Old Trafford.

“I know him very well,” Antony tells Gazzetta dello Sport. “We played together at Ajax. (Onana) is a great goalkeeper and a beautiful person.”

“(Whether we should sign Onana) is not for me to say. It’s the club’s decision and not mine,” Antony adds. “I can only say that it is certainly very strong and that there is an excellent relationship between us.”
