Report claims £85m Liverpool target is now moving closer to signing for Newcastle United

Newcastle United are thought to be closing in on signing Celta Viga wonderkid Gabri Veiga this summer.

Celta Vigo talent Gabri Veiga is now edging closer to joining Newcastle United despite links to Real Madrid.

That is according to a report from Spanish newspaper Marca, who claim with their big headline that Veiga is ‘very close’ to joining Newcastle.

They highlight that Newcastle have been one of the teams most strongly pursuing Veiga sduring his breakout campaign.

The report adds that Newcastle have made their offer for Veiga’s signature and are ‘best placed’ to snap him up.

Real Madrid have been interested in signing Veiga but they have instead focused on signing Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham.

It’s added that Celta have been desperately trying to sort out a new deal for Veiga given that his release clause stands at just €30million (£26million).

Celta are now resigned to losing Veiga though and with Newcastle able to offer big money, it’s suggested that the midfielder may soon make the move to Tyneside.

Veiga has broken through the Celta ranks and has become La Liga’s new emerging talent of the season.

The 21-year-old has been outstanding in midfield, racking up nine goals and four assists in 35 games.

That kind of attacking threat has made Veiga a wanted man and suitors have been rumoured for weeks now.

Spanish reporter Manu Sainz, who was speaking to AS TV, suggested in March that Liverpool were keen to snap up Veiga.

Sainz backed that up earlier in May as he told AS – as quoted by Sport Witness – that he saw Veiga as being closer to joining Liverpool than Real Madrid.

Yet with Liverpool now focusing on midfielders like Alexis Mac Allister and Manu Kone, the door has been left open for Newcastle to swoop in.

Veiga looks to be a huge talent for the future and if Newcastle can get this done, they may have just landed a starring midfielder for years to come.

“He would walk into Liverpool” — Pundit delivers verdict on £70 million Jurgen Klopp transfer…

Frank McAvennie has weighed in on the likelihood of Liverpool signing one of their main transfer targets this summer.

Frank McAvennie believes the chances of Mason Mount staying at Chelsea past this summer is unlikely and that Liverpool are the best fit for him moving forwards. The England international has just one year left on his current contract and the Blues are struggling to agree new terms with the player.

Although Mauricio Pochettino wants to keep Mount at Stamford Bridge, talks are not going as planned and time is now running out. However, despite running the risk of losing the 24-year-old for free next year, Chelsea don’t seem to be budging on their reported £70 million asking price.

Regardless of his hefty price tag though, Liverpool remain one of the main runners in the race to sign Mount this transfer window. They do face competition from Manchester United, but McAvennie has backed a Merseyside move to come to fruition. Not only does he think the transfer is likely, but he believes Mount would snap up a starting spot right away in Jurgen Klopp’s midfield.

“Man United have a lot of players in the midfield, Casemiro, [Bruno] Fernandes, [Christian] Eriksen,” McAvennie told Football Insider. “I think he would walk into the Liverpool team. Thiago is not playing all the time so I think if he moves there he will walk straight into the team. I think Liverpool would be a good deal for him.”

Klopp has made it clear that stacking up his midfield is his main priority ahead of the 2023/24 season. An initial clearout has already happened, with James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Naby Keïta all leaving Anfield following the expiration of their contracts next month.

The future of Fabio Carvalho also remains uncertain as he has had limited time on the pitch since joining from Fulham, but Liverpool don’t seem to want to sell the 20-year-old just yet.
