DOUBLE DENIAL! PGMOL refute Ben Foster ‘conspiracy’ and VAR ref report
October 5, 2023
Joanna Durkan
The aftermath of the “significant” VAR error during Liverpool’s trip to Tottenham has now seen a ‘conspiracy’ and claims over referee Darren England and the Reds refuted.

Five days on from the events in north London and the fallout continues after the unprecedented incident denied Liverpool a legitimate goal.

There have been various repercussions and subsequent changes mooted to ensure this does not happen again, with the PGMOL releasing a statement pertaining to VAR.

On Wednesday evening, though, The Telegraph reported that lead VAR during the incident, England, would consequently be removed from ALL Liverpool games for the rest of the season.

It would be a significant development but it is one Sky Sports have now refuted, saying that they “understand no decision has yet been taken by PGMOL to stop England refereeing matches involving Liverpool for the rest of the current season.”

The Telegraph report was a standalone one and although his unavailability for the Reds would ensure there could be no further incidents between the two parties, it would be a big statement from referee chief Howard Webb.

This will no doubt continue to rumble on, though, but one could expect England will not be selected to oversee Klopp’s side in the short term with the fire still burning.

With an incident like this not seen before, it has led to quite the reaction across the footballing world, and beyond, including from former Premier League goalkeeper Ben Foster.

Foster, who runs his own Youtube channel and podcast, claimed that “Sky are in bed with the people at VAR and [the PGMOL].”

“Because they must have got straight on the phone and said ‘do not highlight the fact that we’ve cocked up here, do not show it, do not bad-mouth us’,” Foster claimed.

“I guarantee you that’s what’s happened. So that’s why Sky were under direct orders to not say a single word about it.”

The Independent have now reported that “a source inside the PGMOL dismissed Foster’s allegations as ‘unfounded and simply not true’,” with the referees’ governing body having no say in what TV companies show.

Sky did brush over the incident during the first half and actually missed the second-half kickoff as they started discussing what may have occurred, though they did “not want to comment on Foster’s claims.”

This incident still has plenty of legs and we certainly have not heard the end of it!

Roberto De Zerbi says Brighton have just lost an ‘important’ player ahead of facing Liverpool

Thu 5 October 2023 09:00

James Brooke

Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi has confirmed that his side have suffered an ‘important’ injury ahead of facing Liverpool.

The Reds travel to the South Coast this weekend, looking to avenge a pair of losses against the Seagulls last season.

But first, both sides are in Europa League action this evening. And ahead of Brighton’s trip to Marseille, De Zerbi told brightonandhovealbion.com that left-back Pervis Estupinan has picked up an issue.

Pervis Estupinan

“He’s injured and can’t play for a month,” admitted the Italian. “He’s an important player we are losing, but we can play in that position with Tariq Lamptey, Igor Julio and other players.

“We have to be ready to change. We have to be good enough to get the result without important players.”

Birghton dealt Estupinan blow

As looked likely at the beginning of the campaign, Brighton are starting to see the pitfalls of playing in European competition.

Having been so good in the Premier League last season, they’re now having to juggle midweek trips to the continent.

They were demolished 6-1 by Aston Villa on Saturday, and as a result De Zerbi’s side are in slightly unfamiliar territory. They’re not used to losing anymore, especially by that kind of margin.

Tonight’s game away at Marseille also looks incredibly tricky, with the visit of Liverpool no walk in the park either.

Injuries to the likes of Estupinan won’t help matters, but as De Zerbi says, they do have options to replace him.

And – unfortunately for them – they may need to soon get used to playing permanently without the Ecuadorian. Reports over the summer actually suggested that the 25-year-old is on Liverpool’s radar, amongst other clubs.

Estupinan is certainly a fine player who has been crucial to Brighton’s transformation over the past 18 months. For the time being though, they’ll have to make do without him.

LIVERPOOL FC TRANSFER RUMOURS

Moises Caicedo’s agent admits Liverpool offered ‘more stable project’ than Chelsea

ANDY HEADSPEATH

The agent of Moises Caicedo has claimed he and his client were made ‘dizzy’ by Liverpool’s bid, before ultimately deciding to sign for Chelsea.

The Caicedo transfer saga became one of the big talking points of the summer.

Back in August, Liverpool saw an offer of £111m accepted by Brighton as they sought to bring the Ecuadorian to Anfield, following the departures of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson to Saudi Arabia.

However, Caicedo ultimately turned down the move to Anfield, preferring to join Chelsea in a record deal for a British transfer.

Chelsea also ended up signing Liverpool’s backup target Romeo Lavia, while the Reds finished the summer with the arrivals of Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch.

Now, Caicedo’s agent, Manuel Sierra, has detailed exactly how things unfolded the way they did in those chaotic days of the transfer window.

Speaking to YouTube channel Futbol sin Cassette, he revealed that Liverpool had been in talks for the Ecuadorian between January and May, but the summer offer came out of the blue.

“Liverpool was always interested in Moi,” Sierra revealed.

“The truth is, we had meetings during those months from January to May. But after May, we never heard anything more.

“The first thing we were told is, ‘Tomorrow, you have to go to Liverpool for a medical.’

“Of course, what’s our reaction going to be if we haven’t negotiated, haven’t talked, haven’t seen anything at all?

“We knew where things could happen because we were talking with them until May. In the end, our side and the player’s side were not a problem, but the problem was Brighton.

“When they told us, ‘You can go to Liverpool tomorrow’. well, our reaction was, ‘Okay, but do you understand why?’ So, that was the comedy.

“In other words, they told us to go for a medical examination with Liverpool without having an agreement, without giving the green light. Even Klopp wrote to Moises with Brighton’s permission and all, but Moises was clear all along, and we were clear all along that if Chelsea matched or offered the same conditions that Liverpool could with Brighton, as I said, they surpassed it. So, there were no complaints.”

Sierra also revealed that his client was made ‘dizzy’ by Liverpool’s surprise offer, while admitting that the Reds offered a ‘more stable project’ in the short-term than Chelsea.

“In the end, it’s very complicated,” He said. “Imagine that you’re being written to and called by Jurgen Klopp, that Liverpool is calling you.

“We’re talking about something really big, one of the best teams in the world, just like Chelsea. Well, with a more established and stable project than what Chelsea has today, which is a very ambitious project looking ahead to two years.

“So, when Liverpool comes and approaches you in that way, obviously Moises gets dizzy, I even get dizzy myself, and he says, “Man, we must be doing something right, you know.”

“But Chelsea was by our side all along, asking us, not for much time, they were asking for an hour, I mean, just an hour, so that Brighton could tell them the conditions to match the offer.

“As I said, they were given an hour, which turned into two days of negotiation. Also, because they had the handicap that the first game of the season was Chelsea vs. Liverpool, it would have been a bit awkward to present it on the day they play against each other.

“It’s like an unwritten agreement to not laugh in each other’s faces. So, in the end, after the game ended, they gave us the green light, he passed the medical examination, and on Monday, we were presenting him.”

Unlikely as there is an agenda against LFC, BUT would love to see the match replayed with the same starters, we’ll just make sure not to tackle anyone and we’ll win 4-1
