Fabrizio Romano drops big Man City update over Erling Haaland’s future

HIGHLIGHTS
Manchester City superstar Erling Haaland has been linked with a move to Real Madrid, but journalist Fabrizio Romano believes there have been no official talks between the two clubs at this point.
Haaland’s stats speak for themselves, with 67 goals in 70 appearances for City and a major part in their treble-winning season.
While the lure of joining Real Madrid is tempting, Haaland’s current situation with City seems secure, with the club holding a strong bargaining position if any offers come in.

Real Madrid want Erling Haaland
The 23-year-old has been an incredible signing for Pep Guardiola, hitting the ground running from minute one and standing out as one of the best attacking players in the world, if not the greatest striker around right now.

Haaland’s stats speak volumes about the impact he has made for City, scoring 67 goals in just 70 appearances, and he played a major part in his side clinching a legendary treble last season.

While the Norwegian appears to be happy at the Etihad at the moment, there have been some concerning rumours emerging in recent times, with Haaland linked with a move to Real Madrid. The La Liga giants are looking to sign some of the biggest names in the game, with Kylian Mbappe constantly seen as a target, and the City ace would also fit the bill.

Now, a fresh update has emerged regarding where Haaland’s future could lie, with his current situation with the Citizens becoming clearer.

Romano drops Erling Haaland update
Speaking to Caught Offside, Romano claimed that Haaland is unlikely to leave Manchester City and join Real Madrid for the time being, with no official talks seemingly taking place between the two clubs:

“Erling Haaland – The latest big name being linked with Real Madrid is Erling Haaland, with the Spanish press claiming he’s their top target now after they decided to stop pursuing Kylian Mbappe.

“However, I’m not aware of anything about that at this point – I don’t think it’s even worth to mention if it’s realistic or not at this point because there’s nothing to be decided now for Haaland or Mbappe. Despite some media noise, my honest understanding is that it’s completely quiet on both sides.”

This will come as a huge relief to City supporters and anyone associated with the club, considering how vital Haaland is to the team’s success moving forward.

At just 23 years of age, there is still so much to come from him, with his peak still potentially a number of years away, and the hope is that he will stay put at the Etihad for as long as possible.

That being said, the lure of joining Madrid is something that can be great for any player, considering they are arguably the biggest club in world football, so it isn’t impossible to see Haaland’s head being turned further down the line.

The Manchester City star isn’t out of contract until the summer of 2027, however, so the club are in a strong bargaining position if Madrid do come calling, possibly even demanding somewhere in and around a world-record fee for his services.

Quite why Haaland would want to go anywhere else is puzzling, though, considering he is a massive player for surely Europe’s leading side, under the world’s greatest manager in Guardiola.

Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez are both absent for Liverpool as they face Brentford in the Premier League at Anfield.

Gomez featured in Thursday’s 3-2 loss at Toulouse in the Europa League while Konate played in last week’s 1-1 draw at Luton Town. However, the pair are missing because of minor injuries. It means Virgil van Dijk is partnered by Joel Matip in central defence, with Jarell Quansah providing cover on the bench.

Meanwhile, Ryan Gravenberch misses a second straight game because of a knee niggle. Liverpool are without a total of of five midfielders with Curtis Jones (hamstring), Thiago Alcantara (hip) and Stefan Bajcetic (calf) also injured while Alexis Mac Allister serves a one-match suspension after picking up five league bookings. Manager Jurgen Klopp has named 16-year-old Trey Nyoni among the substitutes.

Andre Onana proving early season doubters wrong as he moves up the Golden Glove rankings

One man, more than most, has received a lot of unwarranted pressure and criticism this season but it now seems this Manchester United man is at the top of his game.

Andre Onana was the man chosen to replace David De Gea after the Spaniard’s contract at Manchester United expired and he left the club after 11 years.

After an eventful debut against Wolverhampton Wanderers, which included a clean sheet but universal criticism from the media for clattering into Sasa Kalajdzic with no penalty being awarded.

The former Inter Milan goalkeeper reached the nadir of his United career against Bayern Munich when he allowed a relatively simple shot to slip through his fingers, things looked bleak.

Onana’s return to form
The goalkeeper’s sliding doors moment seemed to be the penalty save he made against FC Copenhagen, which kept the club’s slim chances of getting through to the knockout stages alive.

Since then, the Cameroon international has been superb for the Red Devils, he has looked more and more assured with each passing game he plays.

His passing, too, has improved as time has gone on and this may well be because the saves he is making on a consistent basis are improving his confidence.

MORE UNITED STORIES
Amazingly, despite the poor start to the season that United are having, Onana has four clean sheets this season which is the joint-third highest in the Premier League.

He has turned a corner after his poor start to life in the Premier League and looks to be in top form and is making his £47 million deal look like a bargain, at this moment in time.

Crooks proved wrong on Onana
Following the dramatic 2-1 win over Brentford in October, the 27-year-old was roundly criticised for his failure to save Mathian Jensen’s shot which gave the visitors the lead.

Writing in his BBC Sport column, Garth Crooks said: “It’s hard enough trying to win matches when your goalkeeper is in good form, but when he’s making errors almost on a weekly basis it makes life very difficult for all concerned.”

Crooks was one of a number of pundits who criticised the goalkeeper but Onana now seems to be on top of his game and looks much more confident with the self-belief back in his game.

It is not quite time yet for these pundits to eat their words but the goalkeeper was never going to go into his shell and lose his self-confidence.

After making the mistake against Bayern, Onana fronted up to the media which should have been a big sign that the confidence he possesses in his own abilities were never going to wane.

The goalkeeper deserves credit for his turnaround in form and looks to be a United goalkeeper in the making.
