Fulham have the unenviable task of playing Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday evening.

The two Premier League outfits will contest the first-leg in Merseyside before facing each other at Craven Cottage for the return leg.

Wednesday’s clash is set to kick-off at 8pm GMT, with both teams likely to field a strong starting XI.

Fulham boss Marco Silva has been speaking to the media ahead of the tie, warning his side that tomorrow will represent a huge challenge (via Tribal Football):

“Of course it is a pride for us to come here [to the semi-final], which has never been achieved.”

“But we want more. We have huge respect for Liverpool and the quality they have. They have played well this season and they top the Premier League after all.”

“You have to have that ambition [to advance], but also understand Liverpool’s quality and the great challenge that awaits us.”

Meanwhile, assistant manager Pep Lijnders confirmed that Trent Alexander-Arnold would be out for a few weeks with an hyper-extension of the knee.

The Dutchman hopes the 25-year-old will be back in around three weeks.

Besides Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk is believed to be recovered from the illness that saw him miss the Arsenal clash.

Dominik Szoboszlai is ‘progressing well’ but won’t be ready in time to feature tomorrow night.

Our predicted XI:

Kelleher, Bradley, Konate, van Dijk (C), Gomez, Mac Allister, Gravenberch, Jones, Nunez, Jota, Elliott

Liverpool are set to complete a loan agreement with Hull City to send 21-year-old Fabio Carvalho to the Championship on loan for the remainder of the 2023/24 season.

The attacking midfielder is a talented player but is in dire need of regular game time if he is to break into Jurgen Klopp’s first-team when he returns to the club at the end of the summer break for pre-season.

Hull’s owner, Acun Ilıcalı has confirmed that personal terms have been agreed with the 54-year-old excited to see the Liverpool player join the club for the better part of six months.

He told Sky Sports: “We agreed all terms with him. I’m very happy to say he’s going to wear the Hull shirt.”

Fabrizio Romano reports that all that remains is for a medical to be wrapped up before official paperwork can be signed, sealing the deal. Carvalho has received the “green light” from Liverpool to complete the transfer.

🚨🇵🇹 Fábio Carvalho has received now the green light from Liverpool to travel and undergo medical tests at Hull City.

— Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) January 8, 2024
Speaking about his excitement to see Carvalho join the Cottagers, Ilıcalı said: “He wants to go to a place where he will enjoy football. Hull is the best place for him to improve his talents.

“So many clubs wanted him and he chose us. It’s because of the way we are playing the game. Liam Rosenior has a big effect on that, playing nice football.

“We are a fantastic club with fantastic players and a fantastic coach. Everything is so good here.”

Hopefully when he returns, Carvalho will have refound the form that inspired Liverpool to sign him in May 2022. It was his glittering displays that helped Fulham return to the Premier League.

All in all, he managed 11 goals and 8 assists in the 2021/22 campaign and he’s still capable of that. His development has stalled due to a lack of rhythm and minutes but that will come back as he gets back to playing regularly.

OPINIONLiverpool fans would lose their minds if midfielder with Jude Bellingham numbers was new signing
Liverpool missed out on Jude Bellingham last summer. It got plenty of other new toys instead, but there’s somebody else who warrants special attention.

Given that we’re still talking about Jude Bellingham, perhaps it’s optimistic to assume that a mooted switch to Real Madrid for Kylian Mbappé would finally end the Liverpool connection. Even once a transfer moves beyond the realms of plausibility, the what-could-have-been leaves a mark.

That’s more pronounced with Bellingham, given that Liverpool seemed to have a genuine chance of completing the deal. From almost the first link, Mbappé has been a pipe dream, whereas there was genuine dismay when the first reports emerged that the Reds were no longer front-runners for Borussia Dortmund’s midfield gem.

It created something of a rod for Liverpool’s back. Every new signing was always bound to be compared to Bellingham, and every failure was always likely to be viewed through the prism of whether he could have averted it.

Fortunately, failures have been few and far between, and the new signings have started life at Liverpool very well indeed. In particular, it’s a relief that Dominik Szoboszlai had such an explosive first couple of months — he’s since calmed down a little, but it allowed the Reds to ride out the worst of any Bellingham angst.

Even so, as the January transfer window opens, the craving for a star turn is back. In truth, that was part of the appeal of Bellingham for many Liverpool fans: his impact on the pitch, yes, but also the allure of attracting a real superstar to Anfield.

Supporters were treated to Thiago in 2020, a real departure from the usual transfer policy. That was hugely exciting, although the realities have since set in: he could be accommodated within the FSG financial structure (albeit at a stretch) because of his age and his injury record, which together look doomed to spell the end of his Anfield tenure at the conclusion of his current contract.

Bellingham would have been a new frontier again — an elite operator with the ceiling to go even higher. Links to Mbappé in this transfer window show that craving is still there.

But Liverpool has something of an answer to Bellingham without even having to make a signing. Such is the nature of many supporters that it will never seem quite as exciting, but the Reds are quietly creating a superstar.

Non-penalty goals over the last year? 94th percentile. Assists? 91st percentile. A pass completion rate in the 98th percentile, but not merely by playing it safe — progressive passes are above average too, while progressive carries are way up in the 90th percentile. Off the ball, tackles are in the 82nd percentile. If Liverpool signed Curtis Jones now, the excitement would be off the charts.

All of those numbers from FBref are compared to other midfielders across Europe’s top five leagues. Jones’ profile paints him as the kind of player who performs every aspect of the central midfield role to a high level — exactly what was so appealing about Bellingham.

At Real Madrid, he’s since kicked his goal numbers up to another level entirely, with Carlo Ancelotti playing him further up the pitch. But the similarities are still very much there, and Jones makes Bellingham’s top 10 on the FBref player comparison tool.

Remarkably, that only makes him the fifth-most similar player to Bellingham at Liverpool, with Ryan Gravenberch, Harvey Elliott, Alexis Mac Allister and Szoboszlai locking down the top four. That says a lot about how the Reds pivoted their recruitment plans over the summer.

But in terms of who offers the same kind of all-round midfield profile Liverpool was so keen to get in Bellingham, it might be Jones who offers the closest match. He’s risen to stardom almost by stealth, having been on the periphery for so long, but it all seems to have clicked in a big way.

As he locks down his place as a regular starter, his reputation will grow, both among Liverpool fans and further afield — an England cap surely beckons, potentially opening the door to a midfield partnership with Bellingham. But as transfer rumors continue to swirl in January, it’s worth remembering the massive talent the club has nurtured for free.

Trent Alexander-Arnold out with knee injury

The right-back’s absence is a significant setback for Premier League leaders Liverpool. Photo: AFP
Liverpool have suffered a blow after England defender Trent Alexander-Arnold was ruled out for several weeks with a knee injury suffered in last weekend’s FA Cup win at Arsenal.

Reds assistant manager Pep Lijnders confirmed Alexander-Arnold’s injury when he spoke to the media on Tuesday ahead of Wednesday’s League Cup semi-final first leg against Fulham.

Alexander-Arnold was able to finish Sunday’s 2-0 third round victory over the Gunners, but the knee tear means he will spend an extended period on the sidelines.

The influential England right-back’s absence is a significant setback for Premier League leaders Liverpool, who are also chasing silverware in the Europa League as well as the two domestic cups.

“First of all, some not-that-good news, Trent hyper-extended his knee during the last game,” Lijnders said.

“So he has a little tear in the lateral ligament of his knee and he will need time to recover. He had a scan and he will be out for a few weeks, so let’s see after that.

“He will get some rest and then hopefully he can come back to where he was.”

After Wednesday’s League Cup tie, Alexander-Arnold will miss a Premier League clash with Bournemouth on January 21, then the second leg at Fulham three days later.

Liverpool will play Norwich or Bristol Rovers in the FA Cup fourth round on the weekend of January 27 before taking on Chelsea in the Premier League on January 31.

“It is a big blow as he was one of our most important players. Even in bad spells he was the one putting the balls where we needed the difference,” Lijnders said.

“Because this guy was decisive in all the games and was the one who created constantly for us from deep and gave the team a high level of flexibility.

“We will really miss him. We will have to find new dynamics without him because he made our game flexible but hopefully it is three weeks.”

It wasn’t all bad news for Liverpool on Tuesday as Lijnders said Netherlands centre-back Virgil van Dijk was available to face Fulham after missing the Arsenal game due to illness. (AFP)

Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al Khelafi insists he wants Kylian Mbappe to stay at the Parc des Princes despite being linked with moves to Liverpool and Real Madrid.

The 25-year-old Frenchman has less than six months remaining on his current deal in the French capital and reports in Spain earlier this month suggested that he had agreed to a move in principle to Real Madrid, two-and-a-half years after the La Liga giants had an offer in the region of £170m rejected for the striker.

However, Al Khelafi admits he is not planning for life at PSG without Mbappe, who he insists is a “key” component of the Parisians’ project to compete for a maiden Champions League title.

Speaking to Rothen s’enflamme about the future of Mbappe after increased speculation in recent days, Al Khelafi said: “I want Kylian Mbappe to stay at PSG.

“He’s the best player in the world and the best club for him is PSG. He’s key for our project.”

Speaking after scoring his 28th goal of the season last week, Mbappe, who is now free to sign a pre-contract agreement with any overseas sides as January 1 saw his contract officially move into its final six months, admitted he is yet to make up his mind about his future despite such intense speculation.

“First of all, I’m very, very, very motivated for this year. It’s very important,” said the Frenchman, as quoted by the Evening Standard. “As I said, we’ve got titles to go after and we’ve already won one, so that’s already done. After that, no, I haven’t made up my mind yet.

“But in any case, with the agreement I made with the chairman (Nasser Al-Khelaifi) this summer, it doesn’t matter what I decide.

“We managed to protect all parties and preserve the club’s serenity for the challenges ahead, which remains the most important thing. So we’ll say it’s secondary.”

At Anfield, meanwhile, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp all but ruled out a move for the 2018 World Cup when speaking to Sky Sports Germany last July, insisting that the financial conditions of a move for the Frenchman don’t suit Liverpool “at all”.

Liverpool have already found their ideal Trent Alexander-Arnold replacement who could save the club millions
Alex Brotherton

Liverpool have been dealt a Trent Alexander-Arnold injury blow, but Jurgen Klopp might already have the perfect replacement in his squad.

The 25-year-old full-back endured a mixed 2022/23 season, but he has bounced back this term with a string of impressive performances while pushing into midfield.

Alexander-Arnold has provided nine assists and scored two goals in 25 appearances in all competitions, proving that he is one of the best creative players in the Premier League.

His fine form has helped Jurgen Klopp’s side establish a three-point lead at the top of the Premier League table, but he won’t be able to help his teammates over the coming weeks.

The England star suffered a knee injury during Liverpool’s 2-0 FA Cup third round win against Arsenal on Sunday.

“Trent hyperextended his knee, so he has a little tear in the lateral ligament of his knee,” said Liverpool assistant manager Lijnders.

“He had a scan. He will be out for probably three weeks. It’s a big blow. We will really miss him.

ADVERT

“We will have to find new dynamics without him because he made our game flexible. Even in bad spells, he was the one putting the balls where we needed the difference.

“He will get some rest and then hopefully he can come back to where he was. Because this guy was decisive in all the games and was the one who created constantly for us from deep.”

Alexander-Arnold’s absence is a major blow for Liverpool, who face Premier League tests against Bournemouth and Chelsea before the end of the month. Klopp’s side also have a two-legged Carabao Cup semi-final against Fulham plus a FA Cup fourth round tie against either Norwich or Bristol Rovers to think about.

Without his vice-captain, Klopp could turn to 20-year-old defender Conor Bradley. The youngster impressed with a 15-minute cameo against Arsenal, his ninth senior appearance for the club.

ADVERT

The Northern Ireland international joined Liverpool in 2019 from boyhood club Dungannon Swifts, and two years later, he made his Liverpool debut in a Champions League group stage meeting with AC Milan.

After rising through the youth ranks, Bradley enjoyed a successful loan spell at Bolton in 2022/23 season before he was promoted to Klopp’s squad last summer.

The full-back, who signed a new long-term contract with the club at the end of 2023, now looks set to contribute to Liverpool’s assault on four competitions.

ADVERT

Bradley rotated between right-back and right-wing for Bolton, scoring seven goals and providing six assists in 53 appearances. His ability to play in more offensive positions could make him the perfect replacement for Alexander-Arnold in the coming weeks, meaning Liverpool won’t need to bring in an emergency replacement before the transfer market closes.

Alexander-Arnold seems to think that anyway. When Bradley took to Instagram to celebrate his cameo at the Emirates, the England star commented: “Impact.”

There’s never a good time to lose a key player through injury, but Alexander-Arnold’s absence could prove to be a blessing in disguise.

Former Liverpool player Sadio Mané has wed his long-time girlfriend, Aisha Tamba.

The exact duration of the couple’s relationship remains undisclosed. The private nuptials took place in Keur Massar, a district in Senegal’s capital city, Dakar, just a week shy of the Africa Cup of Nations’ commencement.

According to Pulse Sports, Mané, now playing for Al-Nassr, not only won Aisha’s heart but also financed her education at a private college in Mbao. As a senior student there, Aisha’s academic journey was made easier by the footballer’s generosity.

Pictures from their intimate wedding ceremony were shared on Instagram by @Magvision_Evens_Officiel. The images capture moments of affection between the newlyweds — Mané kissing Aisha’s hands and snuggling close to her. One particular photo features the couple seated beneath a rose arrangement with ‘Mrs Mané’ emblazoned on the wall in gold.

Born in Casamance, a town adjacent to Mané’s birthplace, Aisha shares not only her husband’s Islamic faith but also his penchant for privacy. During his six-year tenure with Liverpool, which concluded in 2022, Mané kept his romantic life under wraps.

Back in 2022, when asked about his ideal life partner, Mané had stated (as per the Tribune): “I’ve seen a lot of girls asking me why I am not married, but sorry you might be wasting your time. The woman I marry will not be on social networks. I want to marry a woman who respects God and prays well. Everyone has their own way of making their choice of love.”

Mané, who had a brief stint with Bayern Munich post his Liverpool departure, is currently a part of the Saudi Arabian team Al-Nassr, alongside Cristiano Ronaldo. He joined the affluent Saudi team after a challenging year in Germany with Bayern.

While Mané gears up for the Africa Cup of Nations, his new wife Aisha is reportedly committed to continuing her studies. The 31-year-old’s first match as a married man will be against Gambia on January 15th.

Liverpool finally reveal when Thiago and Stefan Bajcetic WILL be back
January 9, 2024
Joanna Durkan
Liverpool have waited a long time to be able to call upon either Thiago or Stefan Bajcetic, but the end may finally be in sight should training returns go to plan.

Jurgen Klopp has not been able to call upon Thiago since April of last year, with a hip injury needing surgery, which was then followed by a series of setbacks.

It was an issue that the Spaniard had predicted for himself, such is his style of play, but he could be getting closer to playing a part this season – and the same could be said for Bajcetic.

The young midfielder has featured twice in 2023/24 but has not been seen in the last 22 games, though the club have a plan to reintroduce them into training in February.

“They will not be ready for the end of this month. It will probably be going into the next month to train with us,” assistant manager Pepijn Lijnders said of the club’s plan.

“But both [with] no complications, progressing.”

It is at least positive news, unlike that of the recent blow for Trent Alexander-Arnold, though we still have some time to wait before they return to full training and then competitive action.

A return to full team training will be a boost not only for them but the entire squad, from there they will need to adjust and train without issue before making a competitive outing.

This could be late February or even into March, a lot will depend on their fitness, stamina and how they react to increasing their work load after so long out of the team.

At this stage, though, it can only be seen as a positive, and their returns to training are likely to follow that of Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas.

“Hopefully both of them – Robbo and Kostas – will be back at the end of this month to train with the team,” Lijnders told reporters on Friday.

Fabio Cravalho is set to complete a loan move to Hull City imminently after being recalled from RB Leipzig with the attacking midfielder in dire need of game time.

Yesterday, it was confirmed by David Ornstein that his move to the Championship outfit will “be done in coming days” and considering that the 21-year-old has played just 998 minutes of football for Liverpool and Leipzig since the start of the 2022/23 season, he will be fired up to play regularly.

He arrived at Anfield with a sense of expectation but for whatever reason, it just hasn’t worked out for him so far.

Fortunately, Liverpool have swiftly found another loan spell, this time at Hull City, where he can go in and get some seriously needed game time.

Fabio Carvalho close to Hull City loan move, personal terms agreed
With his move set to be confirmed, Hull’s owner, Acun Ilıcalı, has confirmed that an agreement has been reached with Carvalho and his entourage over personal terms for his short stay at the club.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the 54-year-old said: “We agreed all terms with him. I’m very happy to say he’s going to wear the Hull shirt.

“It’s almost done. The announcement has to be done, that’s all. The club will do it.”

“It’s almost done and we are very happy” ⏳

— Sky Sports Football (@SkyFootball) January 8, 2024
Carvalho’s development has certainly stalled but he’s still only 21 and Ilicali is excited to have the Liverpool star at the club for the end of the Championship season.

The Hull City boss continued: “So many clubs wanted him and he chose us. It’s because of the way we are playing the game. Liam Rosenior has a big effect on that, playing nice football.

“He wants to go to a place where he will enjoy football. Hull is the best place for him to improve his talents.

“We are a fantastic club with fantastic players and a fantastic coach. Everything is so good here.”

Carvalho will return to the club in the summer when his future will be decided based on how his loan spell went.

It’s too early to say what the 2024/25 season will hold for him but he will be desperate to show Klopp why he should be part of the squad.

He will also have pre-season in the summer to make his point to the coaching staff during training and friendlies.

Dominik Szoboszlai issues injury update after things ‘didn’t go as planned’ at Liverpool
Tue 9 January 2024 08:00
Bence Bocsak
2024 didn’t start the way Dominik Szoboszlai would have wanted. His injury against Newcastle in the first game of the calendar year came at an unfortunate time for Liverpool as well.

Jurgen Klopp is already without several key players, and Szoboszlai being ruled out just further added to the Liverpool boss’ injury problems.

However, it’s not all doom and gloom. The Hungarian’s muscle injury is not thought to be serious, and he could be back sooner rather than later.

Last night, Szoboszlai was back in his homeland to receive the Hungarian Male Sports Person of the Year award for 2023, and prior to the ceremony he spoke to journalists to give an update on his injury.

Szoboszlai injury update
Speaking to M4 Sport, Szoboszlai revealed that things did not go according to plan against Newcastle in his first game, but that he will be on the pitch very soon.

“I’m getting better. The first game of the year didn’t go as planned [for me], but it won’t take long and I’ll be back.”

That’s about as positive of an about as Liverpool fans could hope for. Having Szoboszlai back in the side will be a huge boost for Jurgen Klopp.

Fulham midweek might come too early, but based on Szoboszlai’s words it seems very possible that he could be in line to feature against Bournemouth in Liverpool’s next Premier League game.

NEWSRecruitment: Police chief warns officials against collection of money from applicants

Published 2 days ago on January 7, 2024By Anambra Daily Reporter

The Chairman, of the Police Service Commission, Mr Solomon Arase, has instructed the commission’s officials, deployed for the recruitment of new Constables, against the collection of money from applicants and families.

Arase, a retired Inspector-General of Police, gave the warning at a pre-deployment briefing of the physical and credentials screening officials on Saturday, ahead of the exercise starting on Monday across the federation.

This is contained in a statement on Sunday by the commission spokesperson, Mr Ikechukwu Ani.

According to Arase, it is not just a recruitment exercise, but a defence of the sanctity of the commission’s mandate and demonstration of its competence.

He said collecting money from applicants or families was an action contrary to the principles of integrity and fairness, stressing that the officials were not merely fulfilling a duty, but shaping the future of the Force.

The Chairman charged the officials to adhere strictly to the highest standards of professionalism and ethical conduct throughout the entire duration of the exercise.

“I admonish you to anticipate unprecedented challenges during this exercise. With over 400,000 applicants passing through your stations, each presenting argument to join the Nigeria Police Force, the pressure will be immense.

“Remember, you are the guardians of a process that not only holds inherent significance, but also paves the way for the forthcoming 30,000-man recruitment approved by the current administration.

“Embrace this responsibility with the knowledge that your actions will resonate beyond the confines of the present. As staff of the Commission, you are entrusted with a job that carries the weight of our nation’s aspirations for a just and secure future,” Arase admonished.

The chairman pointed out that the recruitment was significant as it is the first conducted by the Commission after the supreme Court Judgment on 20th July, 2023, that reaffirmed the primacy and exclusivity of the commission in recruiting for the Force.

“We stand at the precipice of a new era, and it is our solemn duty to ensure that this exercise establishes the gold standard for future recruitments.

“The nation’s watchful eyes will scrutinise our every move, demanding our unwavering dedication and commitment to the principles of fairness and justice.

“Therefore, I implore each of you to exhibit your best behavior, upholding the highest standards of discipline, integrity, and honesty,” he charged the officials.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Mr Kayode Egbetokun has called on Nigerians to embrace unity, love and tolerance to foster the peace in the country ahead of 2024.

A statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi said the IGP made the call on Sunday in Abuja in his New Year message to Nigerians.

The IGP emphasised the importance of collective efforts in building a harmonious society.

He urged communities to strengthen the bonds that would unite and foster understanding among diverse groups.

According to him, by embracing love and tolerance, Nigerians could overcome differences and work together towards a safer and more prosperous Nigeria.

He said the Nigeria Police would remain committed to ensuring the safety and security of citizens, and enjoined the public to collaborate with the police and other security and law enforcement agencies.

The IGP urged the public to report any suspicious activities that could threaten the peace and well-being of their communities.

“Together, let us embark on a journey of compassion, understanding, and cooperation.

“May this new year bring about positive transformations for our great nation.

“Once again, we wish you a happy, prosperous, and fulfilling new year, 2024,” he said. (NAN)

Liverpool could unlock Gakpo with move for “unstoppable” £25m talent

Klopp might have identified the perfect signing to complete his side’s frontline.

Liverpool overcame a massive hurdle in dispatching Arsenal in the FA Cup last weekend, absorbing relentless waves of pressure before snatching victory with a late flurry to advance to the fourth round.

Jurgen Klopp must be delighted with his side, having put the disappointment of an abject 2022/23 campaign behind them with title-chasing success across all four fronts so far, emboldened by the influential summer changes to the midfield.

It hasn’t been perfect, but then football rarely is and perched in first place in the Premier League after 20 matches is a tremendous accomplishment, now requiring focus to keep hold of such a position into the campaign’s business end.

It’s unlikely that Liverpool will do anything drastic on the transfer front this month, but that’s not to say that preparations cannot be put in place for the summer.

Liverpool transfer news – Crysencio Summerville
According to a report from Anfield Watch last week, Liverpool are weighing up a transfer for creative Leeds United forward Crysencio Summerville at the end of the campaign.

The Dutch ace has been at the centre of Daniel Farke’s side’s promotion push in the Championship this season and his dynamic performances have not been missed by the Liverpool transfer team – who love a shrewd signing.

Summerville had a £20.5m buyout clause in his contract but this is no longer viable, with insider Dean Jones telling GIVEMESPORT earlier in the season that it may well take a bid of £25m or more to sell.

The 22-year-old’s revived displays this season have indeed led to a glut of interest from numerous outfits, with Newcastle United also listed as suitors in a separate report.

Crysencio Summerville’s style of play
Described as “unstoppable” by Statman Dave after one effective display this season, Summerville has posted 12 goals and six assists across 23 matches in the second tier throughout 2023/24, fluctuating between wide flanks but principally found on the left.

Utterly mesmerising at times, Summerville, aged 22, has been the all-encompassing forward thus far and really looks like he has what it takes to succeed at a team such as Liverpool, fighting for honours at the forefront of European football.

Signed from Dutch Eredivisie side Feyenoord for a paltry £1.5m as an 18-year-old in 2020, Summerville spent his first two years at Elland Road honing his craft with the youth ranks, and he started to earn his stripes within the senior set-up last term, scoring four goals and supplying two assists from 12 Premier League starts.

But with Leeds collapsing and headed for relegation, the burden perhaps came with too much weight and he failed to produce performances to match his skill set, leaving some, including JustJoe Football Show’s Joe Wainman – questioning whether he should be shipped on before the anticipated summer rebuild.

The presenter said: “I may be wrong and this may come back to bite me, but whenever I’ve seen Summerville, he has not pulled up any trees. Okay, we might not have seen enough of him, you could argue.”

Wrong he was, with Summerville now growing into his skin and tantalising a rich career at the top of the game; of course, he will need to prove himself in the top flight but is using Leeds’ relegation as the perfect opportunity to sharpen his tools.

As per FBref, he ranks among the top 1% of attacking midfielders and wingers across divisions similar to the Championship over the past year for goals scored, the top 16% for assists, the top 2% for shot-creating actions, the top 4% for progressive carries and the top 10% for successful take-ons per 90.

Emphasising his quality as a protean attacking threat, Summerville indeed has so many angles from which to inflict damage on opposition defences and he could be the perfect addition to Liverpool, augmenting a formidable frontline while not upsetting the equilibrium, developing rising to the fore and perhaps even bringing the best out of Cody Gakpo.

How Summerville & Gakpo fit into the same team
Liverpool signed Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven for an initial £35m one year ago after the Netherlands international caught the eye at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, scoring in all three of his nation’s group games and helping them to the quarter-finals, where they lost to eventual champions Argentina on penalties.

And while he’s been good, contributing effectively and proving invaluable with his versatility, this has hindered him somewhat and there is a sense that the natural centre-forward needs a run of games in his favoured role up front to truly grow into his skin.

With his countryman brought in to bolster the ranks, the £120k-per-week star could finally start producing the kind of rounded displays that are well within his grasp.

Ranking within the top 20% of positional peers across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for shot-creating actions, pass completion, progressive passes, progressive carries, successful take-ons, tackles, interceptions and blocks per 90, it’s clear that Liverpool wields a multi-edged weapon, and perhaps a partnership with a player such as Summerville would elevate his deadliness in decisive phases.

Indeed, with Summerville’s immense creativity and penetrative presence down the left channel, he could provide Gakpo with the supplementation he needs to flourish, having demonstrated his clinical ability with eight goals across all competitions for the Reds this season.
