‘PR disaster’ – Verdict given on 115 Man City FFP charges ahead of start date

Several pundits believe Manchester City’s impending Premier League FFP case casts a shadow over their achievements ahead of this weekend’s title showdown.

Manchester City are on the verge of lifting a record fourth straight Premier League title, with a win over West Ham on Sunday also denoting six crowns in seven years.

Pep Guardiola himself will go down as one of the greatest Premier League managers of all time, whatever the outcome of the league’s financial dispute. However, the success of the club itself will be tainted should it indeed be found guilty of the 115 allegations against their name, charges the Blues deny in full.

The hearing for the legislation battle against the Premier League is due to start this year, although the date has not been publicly disclosed. In the months leading up to this weekend’s title showdown, pundits have cast their verdict on the situation and what impact it is having on City’s reputation.

How Premier League chief Richard Masters’ Man City decision could impact trophy presentation
“I would love to know how City’s owners, or those advising them, feel about the issue dragging on while the team prepares to win its fourth consecutive Premier League on the back of last year’s Treble. They must appreciate it is a public relations disaster.

“That is what baffles me about the whole sordid affair. When accusations are made against any individuals or institutions who have absolute certainty in their innocence, you would usually expect the demand of those involved to arrange a hearing at the earliest opportunity.

“Where is the statement from City expressing frustration or fury that the process is taking so long? Kicking the can down the road means too many insults are being directed at a brilliant manager and his extraordinary team – none of whom will have a clue about how the club was operating in those years under suspicion.

“Guardiola deserves better than lifting his sixth Premier League under such a cloud. As a manager, a coaching and technical staff and a fantastic squad, Manchester City should be acclaimed for being one of the best football teams there has ever been.

“As a club? I’d like to say the jury is out. Unfortunately, we have waited too long for a jury, or Premier League commission, to even begin to consider that verdict.”

‘It’s the elephant in the room’
Ian Wright – on Sky Sports

“You look at the trophy haul and you have to say that Pep’s done very well. But then you look at what Klopp’s done to try to catch Manchester City, the way he’s built that team, how long it’s taken them to get there.

“You have to say, it might be easier for Pep in what he’s done, but Klopp’s still got to get a lot of love. It’s there for everyone to see in respect of trophies but we can’t speak about City without speaking about the fact there’s 115 charges around them.

“The one thing I would like more than anything else is for that to be gone so you can give the team and the manager the love they deserve. You speak about them and it’s like there’s an elephant in the room.

“You want to speak about them, with this rivalry, without saying ‘yeah….’, it’s not fair on the players, it’s not fair on the club. The sooner that’s gone, the better for them, but you can’t look at the amount of trophies and say that Guardiola’s not done better.”

‘Man City greatness judged by FFP case’
Paul Merson – in Sportskeeda

“I’ve always wondered if this Manchester City side are the greatest in Premier League history. You have to see what the charges bring before delivering a verdict on this, but they are quite simply a phenomenal team.”

‘Man City should want quick process’
Gary Neville – on The Overlap

“[FFP] was brought in by elite clubs, to protect the elite clubs as they are the highest revenue-generating teams. I don’t like it and there needs to be a change to the rules.

“One of the diversion tactics is that they say that the Premier League are only picking on the small clubs, what about Manchester City? That’s the big elephant in the room, that City’s charges haven’t been brought forward.

“It’s in the interest of Manchester City, and everybody, to bring that case forward, accelerate the process and do it quicker. It can’t go on, and it’s damaging to the Premier League.

“These charges need to be brought forward, even if it’s some of the simpler ones out of the 115 – there is a date set, but Richard Masters wouldn’t share it.”

Mikel Arteta says Son Heung-min was the one player in the Premier League he would have wanted on the end of the opportunity that could have put Arsenal in pole position to win the Premier League title.

The Gunners head into the final weekend of the campaign relying on West Ham to take points off Pep Guardiola’s side if they are to end a 20-year wait to win the league.

But it could have been City needing help from Arsenal’s opponents Everton on Sunday had Tottenham captain Son not been denied an 86th-minute equaliser by substitute goalkeeper Stefan Ortega when clean through on goal on Tuesday.

“If I had to pick a player in the Premier League for that moment then it would have been him,” Arteta said.

“Michael Jordan explained it many times, how many times you have the winning shot and how sometimes he didn’t always manage to do it.

“This is the beauty of the sport too, so what can you do?”

City went on to beat Spurs 2-0 and will wrap up a fourth straight title if they beat David Moyes’ Hammers at the Etihad Stadium.

But if they slip up, Arsenal can win their first championship since the 2004 Invincibles campaign by beating the Toffees.

Should that happen, Arteta – Guardiola’s assistant at City for two title-winning campaigns between 2016 and 2019 – said it would be one of his life’s greatest achievements.

“It would be one of the best days of my life,” Arteta said.

“It is a big dream I didn’t achieve as a player. If I can do it, especially with the people I work with everyday, it will be some day.

“It was great (winning as an assistant). Lifting the trophy was beautiful.”

Arteta believes the title battle highlighted the “magic” of the Premier League.

England’s top tier is the only one of Europe’s ‘big five’ domestic competitions where the championship race has gone down to the last weekend.

“The magic is already happening because this is what every football supporter wants and lives that it goes to the last game,” the Arsenal boss added.

“The last minute of the Premier League at this level, the most beautiful league in the world by far where you have two teams. This is what you want, this is why it’s the most competitive league in the world.

“The unpredictability is like a drug. You are still there, you still have to earn it and it’s uncertain. There are a lot of factors which can change things around very quickly but when you manage to do it, it’s phenomenal.”

MANCHESTER, May 18 — Manchester City stand on the brink of a historic fourth successive Premier League title, but Arsenal lie in wait hoping for a last-gasp slip from the leaders on Sunday.

Pep Guardiola’s all-conquering team go into the final day of the season with a two-point lead over second-placed Arsenal thanks to an eight-game winning streak.

City, who host West Ham knowing a win will seal the title, are hot favourites to set a new standard for dominance in English football.

Arsenal, at home to Everton in their final game, have been near flawless themselves in 2024, with 15 wins and one draw, away to City, in 17 league matches.

However, the Gunners’ costly 2-0 defeat against Aston Villa last month looks set to be decisive in a thrilling title race that also involved Liverpool until their recent stumbles.

Not for the first time, City have been at their relentless best in the intense heat of the run-in.

Guardiola’s men have dropped just six points since mid-December, in draws against Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal.

As City close in on a sixth title in seven seasons under Guardiola, the competitiveness of the world’s most-watched league has been questioned.

But the Catalan coach has hit back at suggestions the Premier League has become boring and that City’s dominance is thanks purely to the financial muscle of their Abu Dhabi-based owners.

It’s not boring, it’s difficult,” Guardiola said, adding that based on spending levels, Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal should be matching City.

“They spent as much money in the last five years as us. They should be there. They are not there.”

David Moyes will take charge of West Ham for the final time at the Etihad Stadium.

And the Scot did not offer much encouragement to Arsenal fans when he claimed this week it would be difficult to stop Man City’s “under-14s winning the title” let alone the champions in full flow.

Arsenal, who finished second last year, must beat Everton and hope City fail to win if they are to end their 20-year wait for the title.

Mikel Arteta’s men have set a club record by winning 27 Premier League games this season, but that still might not be enough to dethrone City.

“We have to give ourselves the opportunity to live a beautiful day on Sunday, where the dream is still alive and is possible,” Arteta said.

“It’s football and once we are there we just have to live the moment.”

Man United face Euro exile

There will be an emotional farewell for Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp at the end of his memorable nine-year reign, but the Reds will finish third regardless of their result against Wolves at Anfield.

“I spoke before about how hard it will be to say goodbye,” Klopp said.

“I love absolutely everything about this place, I do. I take memories with me, fantastic memories, I take relationships with me forever.”

Manchester United are at risk of missing out on European football altogether after a miserable season.

Erik ten Hag’s men sit eighth and must better Newcastle’s result at Brentford when they visit Brighton to avoid finishing outside the top seven for the first time since 1990.

Tottenham visit relegated Sheffield United knowing a point is enough to guarantee fifth spot, while in-form Chelsea would secure a top-six finish with a draw against Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge.

The top six teams will all definitely qualify for Europe, while seventh could be enough as long as Manchester United do not shock City in next week’s FA Cup final.

At the bottom, Luton will be relegated if they fail to beat Fulham or if Nottingham Forest avoid defeat at Burnley.

Even if Luton win and Forest lose, the Hatters’ vastly inferior goal difference means they need a mathematical miracle to survive.

Fixtures

Tottenham Hotspur defender Micky Van de Ven has emerged as a standout performer in his debut Premier League season, seamlessly integrating into Ange Postecoglou’s XI.

The Dutch centre-back has made an immediate impact, transforming the defence and forming a formidable partnership at the back with Cristian Romero.

Van de Ven’s exceptional performances have not gone unnoticed, with recent reports suggesting that defending champions Manchester City are eyeing a potential move for the 23-year-old.

Dutch agent Simon Cziommer believes that some of the biggest clubs in world football, including Pep Guardiola’s City, could soon be vying for Van de Ven’s signature.

Cziommer, describing him as a dream signing for Guardiola, noted (as quoted by TEAMtalk):

“I think if he continues like this, he would not be out of place at City. Guardiola plays with seven, eight men in front of the ball, leaving you with one/two defenders at the back. Then you need speed and duelling power. And Van de Ven has that.”

Despite Manchester City already boasting a robust defensive line-up with players like Ruben Dias, Josko Gvardiol, John Stones, Manuel Akanji, and Nathan Ake, their interest in Van de Ven underscores the Dutch defender’s exceptional talent.

Van de Ven has been a consistent presence for Tottenham, starting 26 out of the 27 league games he was available for this season and scoring three goals.

Moreover, Van de Ven’s speed has set him apart. In February, he was recorded as the fastest player in the Premier League, clocking a top speed of 37.38 km/h against Brentford, according to Sky Sports data.

TBH Says:
It is crazy to even think that Tottenham will be entertaining any offers for Van de Ven, given his impressive debut season.

However, if and only if they were to, they would likely demand at least double the €40 million they paid Wolfsburg last summer.

Man City 115 charges: Big news on hearing date – sources

UK
Man City have learned that their hearing against the 115 financial charges will likely be held in October after months of delays.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that City are contesting the charges which is why the situation has been kicked down the road, although it remains a complex case.

Man City were charged with 115 breaches of financial rules, with those charges having been recently broken down, and O’Rourke revealed they will face a hearing later this year.

While no exact date has been set for the hearing, both Everton and Nottingham Forest’s cases were dealt with swiftly, and City are now next on the list.

The issue remains a cloud hanging over Pep Guardiola’s squad and they will be keen to end any speculation.

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters claimed on 26 April that “a date has been set” for proceedings and “the case will resolve itself at some point in the near future”.

Man City told ‘It doesn’t look good’ as 115 charges contested
It is also said that there is little certainty surrounding the charges towards City or any possible outcome given the inconsistency in punishments handed to Everton and Forest.

As a result of one charge, Forest were handed a four-point deduction, while Everton received an initial ten-point deduction which was later reduced to six, before a second charge landed them a further two points taken off.

Txiki Begiristain has heaped praise on one Manchester City player for the way he has evolved at the club.

The Citizens could end their latest season with another Premier League and FA Cup added to their cabinet.

If they beat West Ham United at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, they’ll become the first side to win four Premier League titles in a row.

After that, the Blues will once again face off against Manchester United at Wembley Stadium in the FA Cup final.

With these two crucial games left to play before the season ends, Begiristain has had the chance to share his praise for one particular figure in City’s squad who has played a big part in getting the team into the position they’re currently in.

Speaking on stage at the FWA awards in London on Thursday night, Begiristain had this to say about Phil Foden and what he represents for the club.

He said: “He is a good example for us. We try to convince the other players to follow him.

“Of course, it’s an award for him and his teammates but I think this is a special award for Manchester City’s academy. He represents all that.

“A player who loves football, is from Stockport and is enjoying and being professional and adapting himself to the way we want to play.

“I’ve been here for 11 years so I’ve seen everything of him. He is unbelievable. He loves football. He loves to stay on the pitch. He is the happiest man. He is the first to go on the pitch, the last one going out. Sometimes we have to tell him [to stop training].

“Because of the players we have and the team, he has been sacrificing himself for the team by playing in wide areas. He is already asking to play more central. To have a player who can play wide and is performing and producing his best is a privilege for us.

“His progression has been unbelievable. He is 23 and I would say he is getting to the top. Phil has always played in the fastest way. I think he is now getting the maturity of when he has to accelerate the game and when to play more calm and composed and to keep possession. He is maturing on that.

“He is 23 years old and he has won trophies like an animal.”

Foden is City’s best representative
After emerging through the youth ranks at City, the 23-year-old has gone on to make 268 senior appearances since making his debut back in 2017 at the age of 17.

Since then, Foden has scored 85 goals, delivered 52 assists and won a lot of trophies along the way including five Premier League titles.

Having now scored 25 goals and delivered 11 assists in 51 appearances this season, it’s easy to see why he was named the FWA Men’s Player of the Year and why Begiristain thinks so highly of him and how he represents the club.
