Four things the ECHO spotted from Liverpool’s return to training on Thursday including injury updates and a possible debut

After nearly two weeks away from Merseyside due to the international break, most of Liverpool’s stars returned from their international jaunts to prepare for Saturday’s Premier League clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

And although there was no involvement for the Reds’ South American contingent, who represented their countries just over 48 hours ago, there was plenty to be taken from the latest session at the AXA Training Centre.

Here are four things the ECHO spotted…

Ibrahima Konate looks set for injury return against Wolves

Ibrahima Konate is poised to make his return from injury when Liverpool face Wolves this weekend.

The 24-year-old defender missed the Reds’ last two Premier League games before the international break after sustaining an injury that later forced him to withdraw from France’s squad for their matches against Ireland and Germany.

On Thursday, though, Konate took a positive step towards recovery as he was pictured with the rest of the Reds’ first team in training at the AXA Training Centre. Should he be declared fit for the visit to the West Midlands it will be a huge boost for Jurgen Klopp, who will once again be without captain Virgil van Dijk after his recent ban was increased by the Football Association.

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s steady recovery progress

Another potential positive for Liverpool was the sight of Trent Alexander-Arnold with his boots on at their Kikrby-based training centre as he took to the grass during the afternoon.

Alexander-Arnold was substituted in the second half of the Reds’ 3-0 victory over Aston Villa a fortnight ago after picking up a minor hamstring injury. As a result, the 24-year-old right-back withdrew from England’s squad for their matches against Ukraine and Scotland.

Speaking after the game at Anfield on September 3, Klopp revealed that Alexander-Arnold didn’t expect his issue to be “too serious” and would head for a scan in the coming days.

And although the defender was seemingly not involved in team training on Thursday, his sheer presence outside of the gymnasium is only a positive one for Liverpool ahead of a busy September schedule.

Ryan Gravenberch continues to settle into new surroundings

Elsewhere on Thursday, Ryan Gravenberch was pictured training with his new Liverpool team-mates after signing from Bayern Munich on transfer deadline day.

Eager to hit the ground running at Anfield, the 21-year-old midfield declined his call-up to Netherlands’ under-21s squad in favour of settling into his new surroundings ahead of the Premier League’s return this weekend.

He could be handed his Premier League debut at Molineux this weekend.

Thiago Alcantara wait continues

Finally, despite Klopp claiming that Thiago Alcantara would be fit for a return to action after the international break, the Spaniard was nowhere to be seen in Thursday’s team session.

The 32-year-old has not played for Liverpool since April’s win at West Ham United after undergoing surgery on a long-standing hip injury, and Klopp had been hopeful that the September international break would be “enough” to get the midfielder up to speed.

Speaking on September 1, Klopp said: “Thiago had a little setback. He started training with the team and had a little setback so we have to slow down there a little bit.

“It’s not cool for him, it’s not cool for us but it’s how it is. Thiago will use the (September) international break for that, to be up to speed I’m pretty sure. It should hopefully be enough.”
