Pep Guardiola makes Man City quit decision if they beat Arsenal to Premier League title

Pep Guardiola has a contract at Manchester City until 2024 and has made it clear he knows what is coming next.

Man City boss Pep Guardiola has dismissed suggestions that no other manager can win the Premier League while he’s in charge, insisting he still has unfinished business at the club.

If City defeat West Ham at the Etihad, they will make history as the first team to be crowned champions in four consecutive seasons, marking their sixth title in seven years.

Despite rumours that Guardiola might leave before the final 12 months of his contract after creating more records, the City manager is adamant about returning next season.

“Yes, I have a contract,” Guardiola confirmed in his final pre-match press conference of the campaign. “I want to be here next year, yes.”

He also refuted the idea that City’s dominance is detrimental to the Premier League, adding: “If the narrative was that I was winning by 20 points I would say ‘yes, I’m a genius, I’m so good.

“But it’s not. The Premier Leagues we have won the others could have won – and Arsenal can win this one.”

Guardiola maintained his respect for Liverpool throughout these years, stating, “A win is a win.”

“The winners smell good, and everyone wants to copy that. There is a lot of work behind it – a lot. Nothing you have done in the past gives you the right (to win). It’s completely the opposite.

“It’s a lot of work for all departments the backroom staff, the medical department, the office department, how they care about those few, few inches.”

“It is ridiculous how good the balance is. Otherwise you cannot be where we are.”

Guardiola, who finished third in his first season as City boss behind Antonio Conte’s Chelsea, has seen Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool take the title in 2020 ahead of his team.

City have clinched two of their previous titles under Guardiola at the expense of Liverpool on the final day.

With Arsenal having been rallied to the title with two games to spare last year, the champions are aware that Mikel Arteta’s side could snatch the crown if they falter against the Hammers and the Gunners triumph over Everton at the Emirates.

In 2018, City became the first team to accumulate a century of points. A year later, they were the first club to secure a domestic Treble.

Last year, they matched Manchester United’s Treble success by winning the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup.

This Saturday, they will face United in the FA Cup Final for the second consecutive season, heading to Wembley with the opportunity to become the first club to achieve a double Double.

Guardiola attributes City’s success to a squad of players who aren’t afraid to challenge him.

He stated: “We’ve had conflicts this season, between them, between me. It is normal. It is how they solve it, that is the key.

“I know they will be so focussed. Everybody knows what we are playing for. None of us will get the chance to win four-in-a-row again, it is impossible. It won’t happen again in our life.

“We have to live it, we have to enjoy it. I have said many times about these huge personalities that without them we have no chance.

“The players have already had a good season – and nothing changes depending on the last two games.

“West Ham, especially the four players they have up front, can create something unexpected. That is what I am concerned with at the moment.”

Pep Guardiola insists Sunday’s final day will have no bearing on his personal future at Manchester City, with the club eyeing history in the Premier League.

City can become the first side to win the English top flight for four seasons in a row with three points against West Ham and Guardiola has challenged his side to embrace the pressure of making history, telling his side they will never be in this position again.

Asked if he will still have the hunger to be back next season for the final year of his current City contract, Guardiola gave a short, sweet answer on the eve of the final day of the Premier League season.

“I have a contract, I want to be here next season, yes,” he said, referring to his deal that will expire at the end of next season in the summer of 2025.

And while Guardiola was less decisive on what could happen in the upcoming transfer window, refusing to answer before the final day, he did say the West Ham result and FA Cup final would naturally have a bearing on the decisions of some players and their futures.

“I don’t know next season. We have to see how we finish, sometimes the decision depends on how we finish the season,” he said.

“The player who has a good season, is already done. Nothing changes how the season is in the last two games. We have to wait. Now I’m not thinking for one second about next season.”

However, Guardiola did offer a stern defence of Ederson, who will miss the final two games of the season with injury. Stefan Ortega’s cameo against Tottenham on Tuesday renewed calls for the German to get more game-time, and he has admitted he could look to leave this summer.

But Guardiola reiterated that Ederson remains No.1 and will be going forward – dashing hopes of Ortega increasing his minutes next season.

(Image: 2022 Getty Images)
“People talk about the incredible save [Ortega from Heung-min Son] because it is,” he began. “But Eddy has done it many times before with Son the same action and saved it.

“Do you know why we won the Champions League last season? Ederson, in Madrid, made incredible saves at 1-0 down or 1-1, an incredible save for the header against Benzema. He was the key player in the final to win. We cannot define this period without Eddy. Impossible.

“It was a strange period for Eddy, four times injured. A keeper four times with incredible knocks? I have never seen that. Today we have two top keepers, before was clear for first keeper and second, the distance was so big. Everybody knows. The team knows it and everybody knows it that Ederson is the first keeper but the distance is not [big]. When the distance is too big, the team cannot compete.”

Man City: Guardiola has ‘no intention’ of staying as Euro giants ‘give everything’ to land him
Lewis Oldham 10 hours ago

Could Pep Guardiola leave Manchester City?
According to reports, Pep Guardiola has ‘no intention’ of staying at Manchester City beyond 2025 and Barcelona are planning a ‘loud homecoming’.

The Spaniard is on the brink of winning his fourth Premier League title in a row as Man City will win the league if they defeat West Ham United on Sunday afternoon.

Guardiola to leave Man City?
Despite this, Guardiola’s long-term future is in doubt as his contract is due to expire in 2025.

Earlier this week, it was claimed that Guardiola has already ‘communicated’ his desire to leave Man City in 2025 with Leicester City’s Enzo Maresca, Girona’s Michel and Germany’s Julen Nagelsmann mooted as potential replacements.

The Athletic‘s David Ornstein meanwhile believes a ‘decision’ is yet to be made regarding Guardiola’s future, but ‘there is a feeling around the industry that he will leave’.

Ornstein wrote in a Q&A: ‘I don’t think a decision has been made. As you know from last time, Guardiola tends to leave it quite late before committing. There is a feeling around the industry that he will leave in the summer of 2025, however I currently have no evidence to back this up.’

Guardiola has been linked with a move back to Barcelona in recent months amid reports suggesting club legend Xavi is expected to leave the La Liga giants in the summer.

According to reports in Spain, Xavi’s days at Barcelona ‘are numbered’ and club president Joao Laporta has Guardiola in his sights.

The ‘return’ of Guardiola is the ‘big coup’ being ‘prepared’ by Laporta but he will ‘wait until the summer of 2025’ for what ‘would be the loudest homecoming in recent times’.

It is noted that Rafa Marquez would be drafted in as a ‘transitional coach’ before Laporta plans to ‘give everything for Guardiola’.

‘Pep Guardiola has no intention of renewing the contract with Manchester City and that is when Laporta wants to tempt the possibility of the return of the ‘prodigal son’. The relationship they maintain is perfect, but the Catalan coach sees some problems, even if they are not monetary, since he is aware of the difficult financial situation that the club of his life is going through.

‘He has doubts, but the Barcelona president is very persuasive and will do everything possible to convince him. Beyond the sky blue coach, men like Hansi Flick and Mikel Arteta are other options on the table.’
