Pep Guardiola and 381-appearance star offered shock switch to MLS club –

‘growing confidence’ surrounding deal

Manchester City pair Pep Guardiola and Kevin De Bruyne could make a sensational switch to New York City FC in the MLS.

Both manager Pep Guardiola and senior midfielder Kevin De Bruyne are out of contract at the Etihad Stadium next summer, with the growing potential for the pair to leave the club at the end of their current deals in 2025.

Guardiola has been at Manchester City since 2016 and the 2024/25 campaign is set to mark his ninth season in charge in east Manchester, meanwhile Belgian midfielder De Bruyne has been with the club since August 2015.

De Bruyne has made 340 appearances under the management of Guardiola, with the 32-year-old having become a six-time Premier League winner last weekend, and also surpassed the 100-goal mark for the Sky Blues this season.

The midfield star has 180 direct goal involvements in 260 Premier League appearances, and despite plans for Saudi Pro League to make major offers to the player, the Belgian international is set to remain at Manchester City this summer.

Manager Guardiola has taken charge of 471 matches and lifted 17 major trophies to date, becoming the first manager to win four consecutive Premier League titles as a result of Sunday’s historic win over West Ham.

The 53-year-old has won the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, Emirates FA Cup, League Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FA Community Shield during his glittering spell at Manchester City.

Guardiola and De Bruyne could both be set to conclude their penultimate campaign at the club this weekend at Wembley Stadium, however the pair could reportedly remain within the City Football Group network after departing Manchester City next year.

According to the information of Manchester City insider ‘Tolmie’s Hairdoo’ on X, club executives want Guardiola and De Bruyne to move to MLS sister-club New York City in the summer of 2025, with ‘growing confidence’ surrounding an agreement.

New York City officials want the pair to ‘herald a new era and stadium’ at the American club, with NYCFC set to open a new $780 million ground next to the iconic Citi field in 2027.

Guardiola has previously lived in New York, and both the Catalan and De Bruyne are set to be part of the Manchester City squad that will travel stateside next summer for the 32-team FIFA Club World Cup.

New York City FC have competed in the MLS since 2015 and won the MLS Cup in 2021.

Manchester City remain confident in clearing the club’s name

As the celebrations from Sunday’s Premier League title win begin to subside, Manchester City will shift their attention to Saturday’s FA Cup final against Manchester United. Saturday’s final at Wembley will be their final game of the season. There is the potential there for the champions to claim more silverware to cap off a remarkable 23/24 campaign.

Manchester City’s fourth consecutive Premier League title win has dominated the headlines since Sunday. Unfortunately, the ongoing Premier League case against the club has also become part of the narrative. Bein Sports presenter Richard Keys wrote on his personal blog that City’s success comes with an asterisk. Other platforms have shared similar sentiments. But a new report indicates that Manchester City is confident of clearing it’s name. It also explains that the club hierarchy has given Pep Guardiola assurances that the club will clear its name.

Paul Hirst has reported for the Times that Manchester City’s hierarchy have given their manager assurances that the club will clear their name. Furthermore, Hirst reports that the hearing on City’s ongoing Premier League case it set to take place later this year. Furthermore, Hirst also reports that Khaldoon Al-Mubarak, Txiki Begiristain, and Ferran Soriano have assured Pep Guardiola that the club will clear their name.

The baristas, Pep’s “climb the mountain” team talks, his tweaking of the defence, the importance of Carlos Vicens, Phil Foden’s maturity, KDB’s refreshing break & a night out in Tokyo – a long read (yes, another one) on City’s season with Don @LuMartinBCN https://t.co/N7ZbSruUvw

— Paul Hirst (@hirstclass) May 20, 2024

Manchester City have remained steadfast in their belief that they will clear their name.
Manchester City’s position on the ongoing Premier League case has been consistent from the day the charges were announced. They released a statement on the day the 115 charges were announced that they were looking forward to putting the matter to rest once and for all. The club believes it has a body of irrefutable evidence to prove their innocence. Their position hasn’t wavered as media speculation has persisted throughout the saga.

After meetings held earlier today, #ManCity are currently ‘positive’ of a ‘good outcome’, a senior club source has told City Xtra, and are ‘confident’ of successfully overcoming alleged financial breaches released by the #PL in a statement.https://t.co/Km8HDaNpNr

If Manchester City can clear their name when the case is heard, it will be a massive day for all associated with the club. The constant narrative that follows the club will finally be put to bed. It will take time to get to that point. If that situation does arise, it should finally give Pep Guardiola and his team the opportunity to have their success lauded rather than speculated on.

The ongoing story has rumbled away in the background for the past 18 months. But Manchester City’s position has never wavered. They remain confident of clearing their name. The hope for Manchester City fans and everyone associated with the club is that the day is getting closer that they can finally clear the club’s name.

18 months spent clearing any paper trail to mask the corruption . Being so rich will enable them to have top lawyers to deflect their guilt . Why has it taken so long ?? They should have gone in and seized computers and servers to stop cleansing .

Perhaps that is a question to ask the Premier League why it has taken so long.

Man City FFP: Masters gives ‘confidential’ update as he’s told to end ‘biggest Premier League crisis ever’
Joe Williams 2 hours ago
Richard Masters on Man City
Richard Masters is remaining tight-lipped on Man City’s FFP case
Premier League CEO Richard Masters insists he’s bound by rules which prevent him from giving any more information as Man City face 115 financial fair play charges.

Man City were charged in February 2023 with more than 100 breaches of the competition’s financial fair play regulations dating back to 2009.

The club could face a points deduction or even relegation from the competition if found guilty but Man City have vociferously denied any wrongdoing and vowed to fight their case.

The Citizens won the Premier League title for a fourth consecutive time on Sunday and a sixth time since Pep Guardiola became manager, while they could make it a Double if they beat arch-rivals Man Utd in the FA Cup final at the weekend.

Man City went on to win the Treble last season, while off the field the club have also grown, recording record revenues last year.

To many critics of the club, which is supported by the vast wealth of owner Sheikh Mansour, the Premier League charges cast a shadow over their success.

Everton and Nottingham Forest being punished for breaches of Premier League financial rules this season has put the spotlight back on Man City’s case.

There has been a frustration from supporters of other clubs about the lack of updates on Man City’s hearing but Premier League CEO Masters has now explained why.

Masters told The Times: “All we have said is that a date has been set for the hearing. We haven’t said when that is. Our rulebook requires these commissions to be held in private, and everything to be confidential.”

Masters revealed recently that the hearing will take place in the “near future” but former Everton CEO Keith Wyness doesn’t think that statement was particularly helpful.

Wyness told Football Insider: “I do believe that statement hinders more than it helps. When is the hearing going to be? At some point in the future? Everybody is asking ‘When?’. Let’s get this resolved.

“They were very clear on dates and issues around Nottingham Forest and Everton.

“The chairwoman Alison Brittain needs to be held to account very seriously about this. Richard Masters has been the fall guy in all of this and I fully accept he’s got a lot to answer for.

“But as chairperson, with this Man City case, in the biggest crisis the Premier League’s ever had, she’s been completely anonymous and completely absent.

“She should be the one the public are now holding to account. She should be in front of a select committee as soon as possible to work out what’s going to happen next.

“These are big issues. Rishi Sunak said in his speech the other day the Premier League is the envy of the world. You have to be careful.

“It’s about time the Premier League swept up this mess, stopped it and got on with football.”

Brazil have called up three more players for the Copa America after South American governing body CONMEBOL allowed teams to expand their squads to 26 from 23 and they have also replaced injured goalkeeper Ederson.

Juventus defender Bremer, Atalanta midfielder Ederson and Porto forward Pepe have been added to the squad, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) said in a statement on Sunday.

Coach Dorival Junior, who took over Brazil in January after a run of poor results in the South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup under Fernando Diniz, has brought in Sao Paulo’s Rafael for Manchester City’s Ederson.

Ederson suffered a small fracture of his eye socket when he collided with Tottenham Hotspur’s Argentina defender Cristian Romero during City’s 2-0 away win last week. The 30-year-old keeper celebrated winning the Premier League with his City teammates on Sunday after a win over West Ham at the Etihad Stadium.

Brazil’s original 23-man squad was unveiled earlier this month, including 17-year-old prodigy Endrick but without stalwarts such as defensive midfielder Casemiro and forwards Richarlison and Gabriel Jesus.

“All players, regardless of when they were called up, arrive on equal terms to compete and fight for a place in the starting team,” Junior said in a video released by CBF.

Nine-times champions Brazil kick off their Copa America campaign against Costa Rica on June 24 followed by Paraguay four days’ later and Colombia on July 2. The quadrennial tournament will be held in the United States from June 20-July 14.

Brazil will play friendlies against Mexico on June 8 and the U.S. on June 12 as part of their preparations.

Tottenham beat Sheffield United to earn Europa League place

Tottenham Hotspur beat relegated Sheffield United 3-0 to cement fifth place and qualify for the Europa League next season after a Dejan Kulusevski double and Pedro Porro rocket in their final Premier League game of the campaign at Bramall Lane on Sunday.

The result saw Spurs finish on 66 points, two points below fourth-placed Aston Villa, who had already claimed the final Champions League place, and three points above Chelsea.

“It was important we put in a decent performance today and won the game for a number of reasons. I thought the lads handled it pretty well,” Tottenham mamager Ange Postecoglou said.

“It’s always a bit difficult, the last game of the year, Sheffield United don’t have anything to play for. So it can be easy to not have the right mentality, but I thought for the most part we had that tonight.”

After a nervy start, Spurs took the lead when Micky van de Ven won the ball and launched an attack, with Son Heung-Min finding Sweden midfielder Kulusevski who arrowed a low shot into the corner.

Tottenham doubled their lead just before the hour when Porro scored with a thunderbolt which gave goalkeeper Wes Foderingham no chance before Kulusevski grabbed his second six minutes later when he slotted home James Maddison’s cross.

Basement side United nearly went down to 10 men when midfielder Andre Brooks was shown a red card in the 76th minute for bringing down Son in the box before a set-piece but it was overturned by the referee following a VAR review.

United, whose relegation was confirmed last month, finished the season with the worst defensive record in Premier League history after they conceded 104 goals in 38 games.

Sheffield United finished bottom of the table with 16 points.

Kai Havertz gave a scathing reaction after Arsenal missed out on the Premier League title. The Gunners did their bit against Everton at the Emirates, with the German forward scoring a late winner to seal a 2-1 win.

But it mattered little, courtesy of Manchester City overcoming West Ham 3-1 at the Etihad. And speaking to TNT Sports after the final whistle at the Emirates, Havertz underlined his frustration at the club failing to land a first top-flight crown in 20 years.

Asked if Arsenal should be pleased with pushing the champions to the brink, he replied: “Right now I can’t think about that. Sometimes it’s not fair in football but we have to accept it.

“Football is hard. But hopefully we can go again next year and give Arsenal fans what they deserve. But I can tell them next year we are going to be even better team, and we are going to give everything again.”

The 24-year-old also conceded it was difficult to to take any consolation from the 2023/24 campaign, and sympathised with supporters who had endured another season without a trophy. “What can I say, I feel so sorry for the Arsenal fans, for us, it wasn’t enough,” he added.

“Maybe in two or three months we can say it was a good fight but right now I feel like we deserved more. It was not to be the end but we go again next year.”

For much of the afternoon it looked like Mikel Arteta’s men were set to fluff their lines, with Idrissa Gueye’s deflected free-kick putting the Toffees ahead before half-time. Takehiro Tomiyasu equalised three minutes later though, and the clock had reached the 89th minute before Havertz swept home the winner from close range.
