Liverpool could unlock Gakpo with move for āunstoppableā Ā£25m talent

Klopp might have identified the perfect signing to complete his side’s frontline.
Liverpool overcame a massive hurdle in dispatching Arsenal in the FA Cup last weekend, absorbing relentless waves of pressure before snatching victory with a late flurry to advance to the fourth round.
Jurgen Klopp must be delighted with his side, having put the disappointment of an abject 2022/23 campaign behind them with title-chasing success across all four fronts so far, emboldened by the influential summer changes to the midfield.
It hasn’t been perfect, but then football rarely is and perched in first place in the Premier League after 20 matches is a tremendous accomplishment, now requiring focus to keep hold of such a position into the campaign’s business end.
It’s unlikely that Liverpool will do anything drastic on the transfer front this month, but that’s not to say that preparations cannot be put in place for the summer.
Liverpool transfer news – Crysencio Summerville
According to a report from Anfield Watch last week, Liverpool are weighing up a transfer for creative Leeds United forward Crysencio Summerville at the end of the campaign.
The Dutch ace has been at the centre of Daniel Farke’s side’s promotion push in the Championship this season and his dynamic performances have not been missed by the Liverpool transfer team – who love a shrewd signing.
Summerville had a Ā£20.5m buyout clause in his contract but this is no longer viable, with insider Dean Jones telling GIVEMESPORT earlier in the season that it may well take a bid of Ā£25m or more to sell.
The 22-year-old’s revived displays this season have indeed led to a glut of interest from numerous outfits, with Newcastle United also listed as suitors in a separate report.
Crysencio Summerville’s style of play
Described as “unstoppable” by Statman Dave after one effective display this season, Summerville has posted 12 goals and six assists across 23 matches in the second tier throughout 2023/24, fluctuating between wide flanks but principally found on the left.
Utterly mesmerising at times, Summerville, aged 22, has been the all-encompassing forward thus far and really looks like he has what it takes to succeed at a team such as Liverpool, fighting for honours at the forefront of European football.

Signed from Dutch Eredivisie side Feyenoord for a paltry Ā£1.5m as an 18-year-old in 2020, Summerville spent his first two years at Elland Road honing his craft with the youth ranks, and he started to earn his stripes within the senior set-up last term, scoring four goals and supplying two assists from 12 Premier League starts.
But with Leeds collapsing and headed for relegation, the burden perhaps came with too much weight and he failed to produce performances to match his skill set, leaving some, including JustJoe Football Show’s Joe Wainman – questioning whether he should be shipped on before the anticipated summer rebuild.
The presenter said: “I may be wrong and this may come back to bite me, but whenever Iāve seen Summerville, he has not pulled up any trees. Okay, we might not have seen enough of him, you could argue.”
Wrong he was, with Summerville now growing into his skin and tantalising a rich career at the top of the game; of course, he will need to prove himself in the top flight but is using Leeds’ relegation as the perfect opportunity to sharpen his tools.
As per FBref, he ranks among the top 1% of attacking midfielders and wingers across divisions similar to the Championship over the past year for goals scored, the top 16% for assists, the top 2% for shot-creating actions, the top 4% for progressive carries and the top 10% for successful take-ons per 90.
Emphasising his quality as a protean attacking threat, Summerville indeed has so many angles from which to inflict damage on opposition defences and he could be the perfect addition to Liverpool, augmenting a formidable frontline while not upsetting the equilibrium, developing rising to the fore and perhaps even bringing the best out of Cody Gakpo.
How Summerville & Gakpo fit into the same team
Liverpool signed Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven for an initial Ā£35m one year ago after the Netherlands international caught the eye at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, scoring in all three of his nation’s group games and helping them to the quarter-finals, where they lost to eventual champions Argentina on penalties.
And while he’s been good, contributing effectively and proving invaluable with his versatility, this has hindered him somewhat and there is a sense that the natural centre-forward needs a run of games in his favoured role up front to truly grow into his skin.
With his countryman brought in to bolster the ranks, the Ā£120k-per-week star could finally start producing the kind of rounded displays that are well within his grasp.
Ranking within the top 20% of positional peers across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for shot-creating actions, pass completion, progressive passes, progressive carries, successful take-ons, tackles, interceptions and blocks per 90, it’s clear that Liverpool wields a multi-edged weapon, and perhaps a partnership with a player such as Summerville would elevate his deadliness in decisive phases.
Indeed, with Summerville’s immense creativity and penetrative presence down the left channel, he could provide Gakpo with the supplementation he needs to flourish, having demonstrated his clinical ability with eight goals across all competitions for the Reds this season.
Liverpool’s star left winger Luis Diaz is an incredibly talented player but only boasts a single assist all campaign so far and averages 1.2 key passes per game in the English top-flight – which is certainly not a poor figure but emphasises that his best talents lie in his directness and fleet-footed ability to stretch defences.
With Summerville signed, Liverpool could complete their attack and flaunt a myriad of tools to wreak devastation from every angle.

Liverpool revamped their midfield in the summer after the departures of some key men, including Fabinho and Jordan Henderson.
Whilst a lot of the talk was about dreaming and wanting Jude Bellingham. Many Liverpool fans were realistic enough to understand that simply wasnāt going to happen.
But one transfer deal that did get them off their seats and put a smile on their face was the Ā£70 million deal for midfielder, Dominik Szoboszlai.
The 23-year-old has made quite the start to life at Liverpool, but not for Rio Ferdinand, who thinks āeveryone is hyping himā, as he told Vibe with Five.
The all-round midfield player can be trusted as a number six or a number eight. The ball-carrying ability of Dominik Szoboszlai is outstanding.
During the first few months of his time at Anfield, he was nearly faultless, although he has gone through a little blip of late and is now injured.
Despite all of that, Rio Ferdinand suggested that he is being overrated by the Liverpool fans.

āEveryone is hyping him, but I donāt think Dominik Szoboszlai has done (as well as people make out),ā said Ferdinand.
āOh, heās the next Gerrard! I havenāt seen that yet. I see bare of their (Liverpool fans) comments. But one of my mates in my group always says it.

Dominik Szoboszlai is a game-changer for Liverpool
In years to come, this is a transfer that will prove to be even better and someone like Ferdinand might just have egg on his face.
There is an all-action nature to Szoboszlaiās play and it suits Jurgen Klopp down to the bone.
It has to be said that he did look fatigued over the festive period, but he will come good and showcase his worth again when he returns from injury.
And with Liverpool sitting top of the Premier League table, if they are to win the title again, then someone like Szoboszlai and his form is going to be absolutely crucial in the middle of the park.

Arsenalās alarming streak of poor performances persisted as Liverpool handed them their third consecutive defeat this evening.
Having suffered losses against Fulham and West Ham in their preceding matches, Mikel Arteta and Martin Odegaard emphasised the need to make a statement by securing a victory against a Liverpool side weakened by the absence of Mohamed Salah and Wataru Endo.
Although the Reds still possessed considerable quality, Arsenal knew this was a good opportunity to progress in the historic competition.
The Emirates Stadium was filled with fervent supporters, eager to witness Arsenal triumph over Liverpool.
The first half saw Arsenal outperforming the Reds and missed a host of chances, including some golden opportunities for Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka, but the scoreline remained 0-0 at halftime.
Liverpool managed to weather numerous Arsenal attacks that threatened to result in goals, ultimately seizing the lead through a late own goal by Jakub Kiwior.
The game intensified at that point, with Arsenal making determined efforts to claw back into the match but leaving themselves vulnerable defensively.
In the dying moments, Luis Diaz added a second goal for Liverpool during a counterattack, effectively terminating Arsenalās involvement in this seasonās FA Cup after their first match.
The current situation has plunged Arsenal into a crisis, leaving fans perplexed at the unanticipated defeat to a weakened Liverpool side on home turf.

MAs horrific cup form continuesā¦.the 1 he was was 100% Emerys team! If you disagree how many of those players remain?
Again for the millionth time, itās not Havertz fault that we signed him but when he plays, especially in midfield, we look significantly worse than last season. Mythical physical ability that some think he has, no comment. M9ney couldnāt and shouldāve been used to get a DM or a striker
Nelson had a decent game considering how little game time he gets.
Saka completely off for months now, looks uninterested in the stale repetitive tactics we use
Jorginho far too slow, absolutely horrific player when we donāt have possession. Canāt tackle, canāt run, cant intercept.
Ode has been found out, as talented as he is he does the same 2-3 types of passes always and itās getting read every time now. Maybe a real striker and swopping wings would help though
Rice left to try hold down midfield alone, canāt blame him.
Martinelli is a handful but needs actual runs into the box by someone
Ramsdale actually had a decent game, looks more secured that Raya all day long. Almost got an assist and made some decent saves. Nothing he could do about the goals

We had a great first half and should have been 3-4 goals up. Havartz is great in movements but terrible on the ball. Itās not confidence or form, its his bad technical ability. Itās not going to get better. Combining his movement and technical ability, overall he is a mediocre player that the team has to carry.

Got exactly what we deserved.
Someone said how its Artetas fault that we miss so many chances.. Well we werenāt this wasteful last season so somethings changed in the mentality or in training or wherever.
This could be a blessing. Jesus injured (what a surprise), 14 days until next match. There are no excuses to NOT get a striker now. MA is basically forced to do it.

You could sense exactly what was going to happen from the very first minute.
If this doesnt prove that we need an out and out goal scorer, then nothing will! Weāre still hanging on to the goals from Saka, Martinelli and Oodegard from last year. Our style of play has become all too predicable and teams have worked out how to stop Saka and co.
We dont have a Plan B.
I appreciate FFP will hold us back a bit, but why wasnt this addressed last year when we spent 65m on Havertz??

Itās not complicatedā¦.we NEED a striker. Isnāt it obvious, ne need Ivan Toney (no not journeyman Solanki). It is so sad to see us, every game, make chances but unable to finish. A striker of qualityā¦..Pleaseā¦ā¦ā¦..

Like I said earlier I stand by my words I will simply put. Today game was loat based on the gaffer decisions ie using right tactics when many star player are injured. Also, the players lack a fight. I see how Liverpool players at times crowded our players just to retrieve the ball back but our own player are non challant atimes.
Obviously we need a Left back, a CF and a midfielder.

Rickie Haywood-Williams has warned the Merseysiders against trying to complete a deal, however, noting the potentially devastating financial ramifications.

Revealed: Mohamed Salah transfer from Liverpool to Saudi Arabia is a ‘done deal’
Mohammed Salah is set for a move from Liverpool to the Saudi Pro League in the summer window.
Speaking on Football Insiderās Inside Track podcast, former England and Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson claimed that the talismanās move to Saudi Arabia this summer is a ādone dealā.
Salah was the subject of a Ā£150million offer from Al Ittihad in the summer, but Jurgen Kloppās side held firm even amid whispers the Saudi club were willing to pay up to a jawdropping Ā£225m to get a deal done.
However, the Egyptian superstar turns 32 in June and will enter the final year of his contract in the summer.
Saudi chiefs have not attempted to hide their continued interest in Salah and it is believed that Liverpool are braced for another massive offer.
Robinson, who is well-connected in senior football circles including in the Middle East where he has done extensive punditry work, is in no doubt Liverpool will cash in.
āFor me, itās a done deal,ā Robinson told the Inside Track podcast.
āFor his personal ambitions, his personal wealth and for his hereditary wealth to leave for his family.
āNot just that, but because of his religious beliefs. Playing in that league, he will be an icon.
āCristiano Ronaldo was taken over there at the start of it all, but he canāt play forever.
āMohamed Salah, in that league, tops Ronaldo. The interest that it spikes and the revenue that he brings to that league.
āThat will be the biggest deal that the Premier League has ever seen, I have no doubt.ā
Salah has been the Redsā standout star since his reported Ā£34.3million move from AS Roma in the summer of 2017.
Across 332 appearances for Kloppās side in all competitions, Salah has bagged 204 goals and 88 assists and has become the clubās fifth all-time top scorer.
His form this season has reiterated his importance to Liverpool, having netted 18 goals and provided nine assists across all competitions.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR fans are loving the Ange Postecoglou thrill ride and they will be hero worshipping the big Aussie if he can end their trophy drought by getting his hands on the FA Cup this season.
Burnley provide the first obstacle on the road to Wembley and it’s a tricky tie for Spurs with the Clarets finally finding a bit of form after a punishing start to the Premier League campaign.
Like Postecoglou, Burnley boss Vincent Kompany is refusing to abandon his principles after leading his side back into the top flight so this should be an entertaining cup tie with chances at both ends.
While Postecoglou’s high-risk football has gone down a treat with supporters starved of entertaining football, a few punters were upset with him fielding a weakened side as Tottenham crashed out of the League Cup to Fulham in August.
They haven’t lifted any silverware since winning that tournament in 2008 and you have to go all the way back to 1991 for Spurs’ last FA Cup triumph, on the day Paul Gascoigne infamously crocked himself by flying into X-rated tackles.
The Tottenham boss should field his strongest available team for this one but Burnley are still dangerous opponents and have the firepower to hurt a defence missing some key players.
Kompany’s side remain in the drop zone but they’ve only lost four of their last seven games and two of those defeats came against high-flying Aston Villa and Liverpool.
Burnley’s priority will be staying in the top flight but knocking Tottenham Hotspur out of the FA Cup would inject a welcome shot of self-belief into the Clarets squad.
How the bookies view it
Tottenham Hotspur are red-hot favourites for this one and their best price is just 1/2 at Bet365. Burnley are as big as 5/1 at Coral while the draw pays 15/4 at Paddy Power.
Recent head to head
Spurs battered Burnley 5-2 at Turf Moor back in September on a great day for our man Slips Tips as both of his recommended bets landed. That continued their recent domination of this fixture, with the Clarets only winning one of the last eight meetings. Burnley haven’t beaten Tottenham in London since 1983 and lost 1-0 on their last visit two seasons ago.
Players to watch
Son Heung-Min netted a hat-trick when he last faced Burnley but is now off to the Asia Cup with South Korea. It’s a good job Richarlison has started scoring regularly and his tail will be up after five goals in as many appearances. The Brazilian is 8/5 at Paddy Power to add to that tally here.
Wilson Odobert has impressed on the wing for Burnley this season and has chipped in with four goals in his 14 appearances. Spurs leave space behind their full-backs for teams to exploit so he could get some joy here. Odobert is 5/1 at Bet365 for a goal but an assist might be more likely at 13/2 with SkyBet.
Anything else catch the eye?
Going for goals looks the best bet here after we saw seven in the last meeting. Both teams like to play out from the back and Kompany isn’t the type of manager to park the bus. BTTS pays just 3/4 at Betfair and over 2.5 goals is even shorter at 13/20 but combining those picks in a bet builder pays evens at Bet365. I also like over 1.5 first-half goals and that pays 31/20 with Betfair.
Corners are another good option when both teams set up to have a go and we saw 11 at Turf Moor when Spurs came calling. Over 10 corners pays evens at Bet365 but I’m more drawn to the 6/5 they offer on Tottenham -2 in that handicap.

Liverpool kicked off 2024 in style with a thrilling 4-2 victory over Newcastle United at Anfield that took them three points clear at the top of the Premier League. However, it was a victory that may well have come at a cost.
As Reds boss Jurgen Klopp admitted after the game that midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai was injured. “We wanted to take him off,ā Klopp said. āIt was the plan but unfortunately it was a minute late because in the last situation he felt the hamstring.
āNow we donāt know the extent of it, obviously. We have to wait.ā
It was the last thing Liverpool needed given Thiago Alcantara and Stefan Bajcetic remain sidelined and given Wataru Endo will now miss a numbers of matches due to his participation in the Asian Cup with Japan, who the midfielder captains. The Reds have also waved goodbye to talismanic top scorer Mohamed Salah, who delivered the perfect leaving gift by scoring twice in the Newcastle win before joining up with Egypt for the Africa Cup of Nations.

However, there was some welcome injury news for Klopp when the fit-again Alexis Mac Allister stepped off the bench to thread a beautiful pass through to Diogo Jota that has almost been forgotten about given the furore around the penalty decision that followed it.
Both Jota and Mac Allister could now make their first starts since returning from injury in Sunday’s FA Cup third-round clash at Premier League title rivals Arsenal. But along with the departed Salah and Endo, Liverpool could be without a further seven players…
Dominik Szoboszlai
It was clear that Szoboszlai was in discomfort when he held the back of his leg before limping his way around and off the Anfield pitchBut what isn’t clear is just how long the Hungary captain will be out for.
That is something the Reds’ medical team at the AXA Training Centre will be looking to get to the bottom of in the coming days. But, given Klopp confirmed it was a hamstring injury, in appears unlikely that Szoboszlai will be fit to face Arsenal this weekend.

Andy Robertson
Robertson is set to make a timely return this month after being out since dislocating his shoulder on international duty with Scotland in October. The left-back, was forced to undergo surgery and has therefore missed Liverpool’s rise to the top of the Premier League and Scotland’s successful Euro 2024 qualification bid.
Discussing Robertson’s condition recently, Klopp said: “Robbo still needs more range in his shoulder. Obviously it was a big surgery. (He is) still not even close to team training or whatever.
ā(He) can do a lot, everything without using the arm properly, which is obviously good but on the other side shows us we still have a long way to go. For sure, I think, the full January he has to get closer and closer.ā

Liverpool are currently operating without an out-and-out left-back after Tsimikas, who had been deputising for Robertson, suffered a nasty injury in the 1-1 Premier League draw at home to Arsenal last month.
Following a challenge from Gunners winger Bukayo Saka, Tsimikas clattered into Klopp on the touchline and landed awkwardly on his shoulder. It was clear immediately that the Greece international was in a lot of pain. And after the game, his manager confirmed the bad news. Klopp said: “He broke his collarbone at least. That’s really bad for us.”
Joe Gomez, who has made his name as a centre-back or right-back, is currently filling it at left-back. Although the Reds have recalled youngster Owen Beck from his loan spell at Dundee.

Thiago Alcantara
Thiago hasn’t featured for the Reds since their win over West Ham United back in April. A hip issue has proven problematic for the midfielder, who underwent surgery in a bid to bring an end to the problem. The last update issued on Thiago came on Friday.
āI think Thiago will be at one point in team training (in January),ā Klopp said. āThiago is in a very good moment as well but we just have to make sure we donāt use him then too early. The hip thing in and around that area is just a long-term thing as well.
āThere were for sure days where he could have easily trained but itās all about how can he be back then in the long term, and thatās what we are working on.ā

Joel Matip
Matip is recovering from surgery after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury. The 32-year-old, who is the final months of his contract at Anfield, is likely to miss the rest of the season.
The centre-back was left stricken on the Anfield turf in the 70th-minute of the dramatic 4-3 win over Fulham after an off-the-ball incident. “Itās an ACL, ruptured, so thatās what I unfortunately expected from the first second. Everything looked like that. Very unfortunate,” Klopp said.

Ben Doak
Doak was recently forced off in an under-21s match against Chelsea, sustaining a bang to the knee. It came as a huge blow to the young winger, who had enjoyed first-team outings in both the Carabao Cup and Europa League.
The Scot is not expected to be rushed back anytime soon. Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders said of Doak’s condition recently: “Thatās not a good one. He teared his lateral meniscus, which needs surgery.
āThat one will take (a) longer time. He is young, he is a fit guy, he is a positive guy so for sure he will come back stronger, and we need him to come back with the same fire he has with the ball, how he was. He can take time and we will wait for him.ā

Stefan Bajcetic
Bajcetic has endured a frustrating period in his fledgling Liverpool careeer after a number of injury problems.
He enjoyed a strong debut campaign last season but saw it end prematurely after suffering a stress response in his adductor in March. Bajcetic returned in September with outings in the Carabao Cup and Europa League but his involvement against LASK Linz proved to be his last after suffering a calf issue.
A recovery date for the midfielder remains unconfirmed. Discussing Bajcetic during a recent press conference, Klopp remarked: “With Stefan, if you ask Stefan how he feels, he says āgoodā. āCould you train?ā Yes, he could. Itās just we have to be sensible. Thatās how it is.”
