Mbappe reluctant to extend contract with PSG–Liverpool and Real Madrid ready to pounce

Kylian Mbappe caught everyone by surprise last summer when he decided to ditch the prospect of joining Real Madrid to renew his contract at Paris Saint-Germain.

While official reports told the 24-year-old’s new deal would tie him to the Parc des Princes until 2025, it was actually a two-year extension with the option of an extra season.

Fast forward a year, and the Frenchman has deeply regretted that decision following another disastrous Champions League campaign, which could finally cut short his prolific career in Paris.

According to L’Equipe, Mbappe is no longer interested in continuing with PSG despite becoming the club’s all-time record goalscorer this season, meaning he could be free to go at the end of next term.

The France national team captain has played a pivotal role in helping Christophe Galtier’s side move within touching distance of a record-breaking 11th Ligue 1 title with 28 goals from 32 league appearances.

But it could be his parting gift after he decided against taking up the option to extend for a further year, and in turn, will enter the final 12 months of his contract at the end of 2022/23.

Les Parisiens, who were in the same predicament last summer, have a hard choice to make – they can either sell him now or run the risk of losing him for free in a year.

PSG fended off Madrid’s staggering £154 million bid for their headline performer in 2021, but after rolling over in the Champions League this term, they may have to give up Mbappe in the coming months.

Although that must be music to Los Blancos’ ears, they’re not alone in the race to sign one of the deadliest finishers in the world, with Liverpool ready to reignite their interest in the ex-Monaco star.

The Reds enquired about Mbappe at the end of last season before finding out about the forward’s exorbitant monthly wages that make him the highest earner in Ligue 1 by some margin.

Considering Liverpool will likely miss out on Champions League qualification following an underwhelming season, their hopes of landing the Frenchman may decline even further.

Mbappe recently shared his admiration for the Anfield outfit and Jurgen Klopp’s football philosophy, suggesting a switch to Merseyside cannot be ruled out just yet.
