Jurgen Klopp says 19-year-old Liverpool youngster has been in first-team training all week

Jurgen Klopp is on record claiming that Liverpool should not be facing Manchester City immediately after an international break.

The manager is undoubtedly right. The clashes between the best two teams of the past five years have often been some of the highlights of the Premier League season in recent times. An early kick-off at this stage of the campaign has the potential to dilute that.

It also means that both teams could come into the game a little undercooked. With first-team stars flung across the world, training can be difficult for manager’s to structure.

However, one such benefit is that it can give young players the chance to step in and make up the numbers. Speaking in his pre-match press conference today, Klopp suggested that that chance was given to young Kaide Gordon this week, as he continues to recover from long-term injury.

“Only the long-term absentees are still out, no new concerns before I entered this room,” said the boss, after being asked about the fitness of his side.

“Conor Bradley completed normal in training but now he needs to play games, starting with the U21s. Kaide Gordon trained with us all week, which is really exciting, looks really good. [He] is now to gain minutes, but I think that’s it.”

Klopp brings Gordon back
If Gordon can return to the kind of level he was at before his injury at the start of 2022, he’ll be in Klopp’s plans.

The manager liked what he saw from Gordon as a 17-year-old. By that young age, the former Derby County prospect looked set to be a fixture in the first-team.

But then came the injury. And as a result of various set-backs since then, the forward hadn’t featured in a Liverpool squad since January 2022 before making the bench against Toulouse two weeks ago.

However, Klopp isn’t one to forget and disregard young players because of injury. If he can get up to speed, you can imagine Gordon will be given a chance to prove himself again.

With a couple of Europa League group games still to come, you get the feeling that could end up being that chance for Kaide.

Do well, and he can pick up where he left off with the senior squad.

As Jurgen points out, he does need minutes having missed a lot of football of late. But once he’s got those games in his legs with the underage sides, don’t be surprised to see Gordon become a regular in matchday squads once again.

In the short-term it may count against the teenager that Liverpool’s front line is so stacked. This season he needs to focus on getting back match fit, before a loan potentially awaits next year. Great to have you back, Kaide.

Switching Sides: 10 players to play for both LFC and Stoke
Dominic Raynor

Liverpool are back in action on Wednesday night as Jürgen Klopp’s men make the trip to Stoke City for a midweek Premier League fixture.

The Reds will encounter a few familiar faces at the Bet365 Stadium, with four former teammates now plying their trade for the Potters.

But the current quartet are not the only players to make the switch between Liverpool and Stoke down the years.

So ahead of Wednesday’s clash, we’ve picked out 10 players to feature for both clubs…

Peter Crouch

Despite taking his time to open his account for Liverpool after joining from Southampton in 2005, Peter Crouch became popular with the Anfield faithful immediately.

The talented England international scored a perfect hat-trick – left foot, right foot and header – as the Reds beat Arsenal 4-1 in 2007 and his stunning overhead kick in a 3-2 Champions League win over Galatasaray was voted into UEFA’s top 10 all-time goals in European competitions.

After spells with Portsmouth and Tottenham, Crouch signed for Stoke in 2011 and is still an important squad member at the age of 36. Stoke. Crouch recently earned a place in the Guinness Book of Records for scoring the most headed goals in Premier League history.

Joe Allen

Allen followed Brendan Rodgers to Anfield from Swansea City in 2012 and established himself as a popular squad member under both Rodgers and Klopp.

He joined Mark Hughes’ Stoke in July 2016 in search of regular first-team football and scored some vital goals in his debut season in the Potteries.

Glen Johnson

Johnson signed for Liverpool from Portsmouth in 2009 and marked his home league debut with a goal and an assist in a man-of-the-match performance against Stoke.

The England international’s forward forays remained a trademark of his six seasons at Anfield.

He left Liverpool to join Stoke in the summer of 2015 and made his Potters debut against the Reds on the opening day of the season – losing 1-0 at the Britannia Stadium.

Charlie Adam

Adam arrived at Anfield in 2011 after starring in Ian Holloway’s Blackpool side following their promotion to the Premier League.

He was part of the Liverpool team that won the 2012 League Cup and joined Stoke later that year.

Patrik Berger

Berger arrived at Anfield following his outstanding displays with the Czech Republic en route to the final of Euro 96 and his explosive long-range shooting quickly made him a Kop favourite.

Nearly half of his 28 league goals for the Reds came from outside the box, including his incredible 30-yard net-buster of a free-kick that helped secure a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford in March 2000.

Berger also provided the pass for Michael Owen’s winner in the 2001 FA Cup final as Liverpool scooped the treble. He joined Stoke on loan from Aston Villa in 2006.

Michael Owen

Owen burst on to the scene for Liverpool in 1997, scoring just 16 minutes into his debut. Within a year, he’d had become one of the hottest properties in world football, due to his brilliant goalscoring record and an incredible strike against Argentina at World Cup 1998.

By the time he left Anfield for Real Madrid in 2004, he had won a treble and the European Footballer of the Year award. He ended his career with Stoke in 2013.

Bruce Grobbelaar

Bruce Grobbelaar is one of Liverpool’s most decorated players of all time, winning 13 major trophies across 13 years with Reds.

Towards the end of his Liverpool career, Grobbelaar played four games on loan for Stoke.

Dominic Matteo

Matteo joined Liverpool as a youngster in 1990 and came through in the same youth team as Robbie Fowler and Jamie Carragher.

Adept at either left-back or centre-back, he actually made his Reds debut against Manchester City in 1993.

He left for Leeds United in 2000 and joined Stoke seven years later, captaining the Potters as they won promotion to the Premier League a year later.

Mark Walters

Walters became the first Liverpool player to score a hat-trick in the Premier League – during a 4-0 win over Coventry City in 1992 – and was the first full-time resident of the No.11 shirt when squad numbers were first introduced for the 1993-94 season.

But the former Rangers midfielder had actually been at the club a number a years prior to that, having joined Graeme Souness’ Reds in 1991.

He won the FA Cup (1992) and League Cup (1995) during his four seasons at Anfield and also spent time out on loan at Stoke during the 1993-94 season.

Alex Raisbeck

Scottish defender Raisbeck is regarded as Liverpool’s first star player and was an inspiring figure to those that played alongside him.

He was made captain after just one season on Merseyside and led the club to each of its first two league championships and helped win promotion back from the Second Division in between.

Signed from Stoke in 1898, his Anfield career spanned 11 seasons, during which time he evolved into one of the best defenders of his generation.

‘A bit silly to say’… Gary Lineker suggests ‘world class’ Liverpool player might still be underrated

Charles Jones
Fri 24 November 2023 11:45, UK
When all is said and done, Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah may well go down as the greatest player in Premier League history.

The Egyptian truly is a world-class player. He’s scored at a rate that very few others ever have in this league, and he’s been doing it for a long time now.

However, despite Salah’s ongoing brilliance at Liverpool, he isn’t spoken about in these terms very often.

Indeed, while everyone recognises that Salah is fantastic, he’s rarely mentioned in that all-time greatest conversation, and perhaps he should be.

Speaking on the BBC Match of the Day Top 10 Podcast, Gary Lineker has been making a similar point about Salah, claiming that the Egyptian may not always get the recognition he deserves.

Salah slightly underrated
Lineker shared his verdict on the ‘world class’ attacker.

“He’s driven isn’t he? He seems a really good guy. He is rated and it’s a bit silly to say he’s underrated, but do you think he gets the recognition he really deserves?” Lineker said.

Not recognised
Lineker is absolutely right, as daft as it may sound, Salah is still slightly underrated.

It’s very difficult for any footballer to be recognised within their own time, but we really should all be talking about Salah as one of the very best players we’ve seen in the Premier League.

Maybe it’s because it’s been going on for so long, but Salah’s brilliance seems to have been normalised a little bit at this point, and that is why he’s not necessarily spoken about in these terms in the way he probably deserves to be.

Everyone knows how good Salah is right now, but it may be time to rethink the Egyptian’s standing in the history of football, because he’s genuinely one of the best to ever do it.

Liverpool put eye-watering price tag on Mo Salah amid renewed Saudi interest

Liverpool will reportedly hold talks with Mo Salah over his future in the ‘coming months’.

Viewed as the Pro League’s ideal marquee signing, Salah, 31, is expected to join the lucrative Middle Eastern league before he retires. The biggest question is whether or not he’ll cut his time with Liverpool short to pursue a move though.

Salah’s contract at Anfield expires in 18 months and with Al-Ittihad already seeing a £150 million offer rejected in the summer, renewed interest from the Jeddah-based club is expected once again.

However, despite the winger’s contract running down, Liverpool won’t part ways with their prolific number 11 for a discounted price.

And according to a recent report from Spanish outlet Fichajes, the Premier League giants will demand a mammoth £200 million in exchange for their biggest star.

Whether or not Saudi clubs will turn their noses up at such a high fee, especially considering the 31-year-old will be a free agent in 2025 remains to be seen, however, one thing is for sure, if Liverpool can receive such a massive fee for a player that would be well into his thirties and has undoubtedly already given his best years to the club, the deal would be considered one of the most impressive pieces of business in modern football.

Micah Richards can’t believe Liverpool didn’t sign £30m midfielder as Jordan Henderson’s replacement
Fri 24 November 2023 08:00
James Brooke
Liverpool had a big decision to make when choosing to replace captain Jordan Henderson this summer.

At 33, Henderson was going to have to be replaced sooner or later. But having pushed for a move to Al Ettifaq, that happened far quicker than anyone anticipated. In the event, his successor had already been chosen, with Dominik Szoboszlai brought in ahead of the skipper’s departure.

So far, Szoboszlai has proven to be a hit. The legendary John Barnes is the latest to give the Hungarian his stamp of approval. But speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, pundit Micah Richards has questioned why Liverpool didn’t go for now West Ham star James Ward-Prowse instead.

“He is one of the signings of the season as well, Ward-Prowse,” co-host Alan Shearer raved. “What did they pay for him, £30 million? What a bargain! What a season he’s having. The assists. We did a piece on Match of the Day about him and those set pieces and where he puts the ball time after time, week after week, it’s just phenomenal what a dead ball player he is.”

Playing devil’s advocate, Gary Lineker questioned whether any of the Premier League’s ‘so called bigger clubs’ would regret not picking the 29-year-old up from Southampton.

“100%,” replied Richards. “Liverpool should have bought him. He was destined for Liverpool. Replace Henderson, he does exactly what Henderson can do and he has delivery as well. I’m thinking why has that not happened?”

Liverpool questioned on Ward-Prowse
In all seriousness, there’s no way Liverpool should have been in for Ward-Prowse this summer.

As they have been for a number of years now, the Reds were linked with a potential swoop for the England midfielder. But with respect to him and what he’s doing at West Ham, Ward-Prowse is a step below Liverpool’s level.

MORE LIVERPOOL STORIES
Given how well he’s started the season, that might sound like a ridiculous thing to say. However, at 29 this is as good as Ward-Prowse is ever going to be.

He’s effective at what he does, but there’s a reason West Ham haven’t markedly improved since bringing him in.

James Ward-Prowse
Photo by Vincent Mignott/DeFodi Images via Getty Images
The fact that the Hammers are no better off is not all down to Ward-Prowse of course, just as Liverpool’s improvement isn’t all down to Szoboszlai. But the Reds needed a transformative figure to come in and play the role Henderson was.

Szoboszlai is a superstar in the making. Ward-Prowse is a solid Premier League player with an exceptional set-piece delivery.

After 12 games, the West Ham man has more goals and assists than Szoboszlai, that’s true. But football is more than just numbers on a piece of paper, and we’d take the Hungary captain any day of the week.

So, although the question posed by Shearer, Lineker and Richards is a legitimate one, we don’t think Liverpool – or any of the other big sides – will be kicking themselves too hard.
