Manchester City suffer blow ahead of Community Shield against Manchester United with Ederson an injury doubtby

Manchester United have been handed a boost ahead of the FA Community Shield against Manchester City on Saturday after Sky Blues manager Pep Guardiola confirmed that his side have suffered a major injury blow.

The Premier League reigning champions faced Chelsea in their last game of pre-season yesterday, running out 4-2 winners, but they were without first-choice goalkeeper Ederson, who was an unused substitute.

The Brazil international did not even warm up before the game and Guardiola revealed that he did not train ahead of the game too.

It now remains to be seen if he will be available to face Man United this weekend.

“Ederson had niggles, we didn’t want to take a risk,” the Man City boss said.

“Yesterday he didn’t train. Today is much better. I think next week will be better but I didn’t want to take a risk.”

Man United lost their last game of the pre-season 3-0 to Liverpool and manager Erik ten Hag will hope things change by the time they take on Man City.

While they have a solid second-choice goalie in Stefan Ortega, being without Ederson is a blow for the Etihad Stadium club, and the Red Devils could pounce if he is not available on Saturday.

However, Man United have injury woes of their own, with Leny Yoro and Rasmus Hojlund out of action going forward.

The defensive trio of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans all started the game against Liverpool but were taken off with varying degrees of concern, while young centre-back Will Fish had to be stretchered off after 28 minutes.

Harry Maguire did not feature at all and was omitted as a precaution, with Lisandro Martinez the only fit centre-back Man United have right now.

The Red Devils won their last game of last season, lifting the FA Cup at the expense of Man City at Wembley, and starting 2024-25 with a piece of silverware after another victory against their bitter city rivals will be a solid way to kick off the new campaign.
