‘Magical’ – International media lauds ‘standout’ Liverpool star as 9/10 rating speaks volumes

Liverpool’s Conor Bradley earned rave reviews after his performance for Northern Ireland against Romania. His display saw him also pick up a 9/10 player rating.

Liverpool defender Conor Bradley was the star man as Northern Ireland drew 1-1 with Romania during an international friendly on Friday evening.

The 20-year-old was deployed in a new role that allowed him to make an impact at both ends of the pitch, and he won back possession early on for his side’s opening goal in the seventh minute, beginning a performance that saw him picked out as the Man of the Match by Belfast Live.

Bradley was handed a 9/10 player rating for his display, which received praise for his work ethic and being the ‘standout player’ on the pitch for the Green Army.

His performance was also deemed ‘magical’ by the Belfast Telegraph, which was impressed by both the Liverpool star’s attitude and ability. Both elements of his game that have previously been praised by club manager JĂŒrgen Klopp.

Bradley recently spoke about Klopp while on international duty with Northern Ireland to BBC Sport. “He’s just good with me and helps me out when I need help,” he said.

“He’s helped me loads and given me my first chance so I’ll be forever grateful to him. It would be lovely [to win the Premier League] but there’s still hard work to go to get that and there’s still loads of games left.

“Hopefully at the end of the season with Liverpool I’ll have a couple more medals to my name, which would be brilliant and give the gaffer the send-off he deserves.”

Liverpool.com says: Conor Bradley is improving quickly since being handed a run of games in the first team, and it looks as though he is replicating the performances for Northern Ireland that Liverpool fans have been enjoying. It’s nice to see him receive the praise he deserves after what has been an excellent campaign so far, and it’s exciting to see how good the 20-year-old could get. He showed the best of both his attacking and defensive abilities against Romania, with further signs of his limitless potential.

As Trent Alexander-Arnold prepares to return, Klopp could even consider deploying both of them in some games where the vice-captain is played in midfield. Sporting director Richard Hughes certainly won’t need to be looking at right-backs as potential signings this summer.

Liverpool will go into the business end of the season full of confidence. Despite the FA Cup quarter-final defeat to rivals Manchester United — and the manner of the defeat — the Reds are still in the hunt for two more trophies and could end the JĂŒrgen Klopp era with a treble.

Liverpool faces Atalanta in the quarter-final of the Europa League and Klopp will want to win the one trophy that has so far eluded him during his time at Anfield, with the German losing in the 2016 final of the competition to Sevilla.

Liverpool is second in the Premier League table, level on points with Arsenal but behind on goal difference. Yet with the Gunners having a run of difficult games coming up, Liverpool could take top spot in the coming weeks.

Before the club game kicks into high gear once more, Klopp will be hoping his players return to Merseyside unscathed after the latest round of international games. Klopp needs as many players back as possible after enduring a horrendous run with injuries over the past few months. Here are two L.iverpool.com articles today that you shouldn’t miss.

Richard Hughes could repeat Pep Lijnders trick as ‘next Xabi Alonso’ wants transfer
Incoming sporting director Richard Hughes will have a lot of things to sort through when he officially takes over his role at the club on June 1. Hughes may have a list of players he believes he could sign for the Reds already at this stage, and he could present Liverpool’s new manager, whether it’s Xabi Alonso or someone else, with a gift in the shape of Atalanta’s Teun Koopmeiners.

The Dutchman has been one of the best midfielders in Italy this season, and the former AZ Alkmaar player has told the Italian side that he intends to leave at the end of the season. Learn more from James Findlater and Ben Bocsak by clicking here.

Andy Robertson left fuming as Liverpool star leaves international duty early
Many of Liverpool’s players featured for their respective nations this week, with mixed results. Dominik Szoboszlai scored a penalty in a 1-0 win for Hungary against Turkey, while Luis DĂaz captained Colombia to a 1-0 win against Spain.

Left-back Andy Robertson was left fuming after Scotland were demolished 4-0 against a Dutch side that contained Liverpool pair Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo. Following the game, Robertson spoke out in his post-match interview, and didn’t hold back on what he saw.

Alexis Mac Allister, Kostas Tsimikas and Conor Bradley were also in action for their countries in what is the last international break of the season. Read more from James Findlater by clicking here.

Man United summer transfer plan demolished by ‘£380m’ reveal – Kieran Maguire

Man United are “dancing on the head of a pin” to comply with financial regulations because they still owe £380million in transfer instalments.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that United’s huge transfer debt has stopped the club from signing players in recent windows.

It is understood that the Red Devils are close to the limit of the Profit and Sustainability Rules after their heavy spending in recent years.

United failed to sign a single player in the January window due to their budget being restricted by the regulations.

Man United ‘specialist’ must tackle £380m transfer problem
Maguire admitted that he was shocked that a football finance manager wasn’t already in place at Old Trafford and believes the new role will “pay for itself” if they can tackle the club’s £380million transfer debt.

“It does seem late for somebody to be brought into Man United for this role,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

“At the same time, we have noted in recent windows that Manchester United have been dancing on the head of a pin to comply with the regulations.

“The level of spending has been below the expectations of many fans.

“Part of the reason for this is that those fans don’t realise that Manchester United have £380million in outstanding instalments which are due for previous signings.

“People don’t look at their credit card bill when they’re spending money.

“If this role and the person involved is able to help Manchester United create a strategy for recruitment, then that job will pay for itself many times over very, very quickly

Klopp quickly angered at Salah probe as Liverpool boss gives his side of Henderson saga
Samuel Bannister 15 Sep 2023 2:04 PM
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and forward Mohamed Salah
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has reacted angrily to suggestions that the Saudi Pro League could continue its pursuit of Mohamed Salah in January.

Al-Ittihad recently tempted Liverpool with a huge bid for Salah while the transfer window remained open in Saudi Arabia. Liverpool stood firm, though, avoiding another of their players moving to the Middle East after Jordan Henderson, Fabinho and Roberto Firmino.

One of the main reasons Liverpool were inclined to reject Al-Ittihad’s advances was the fact that they could not have immediately signed a replacement. When the transfer windows re-open in January, though, that will no longer be the case, which has led to plenty of speculation about suitors from the Saudi Pro League testing their resolve again at the next opportunity.

But when pressed on the topic of selling Salah in the winter, Klopp hit back at reporters during a Friday press conference.

The Liverpool boss responded: “A week after it closed you ask me about the January transfer window! You can’t wait until December to ask these questions?

“I’m not worried about and wasn’t until you opened the wound again. I’m not worried.”

While Salah has stayed put, the Saudi Pro League now contains several players who used to be at Klopp’s disposal. As well as the trio mentioned above, the likes of Sadio Mane and Georginio Wijnaldum have also ended up there.

Klopp reacts to Henderson interview
Probably the most controversial Saudi swoop for a Liverpool player, though, was when Al-Ettifaq bought Jordan Henderson.

The former Liverpool captain recently claimed he felt unwanted by the club towards the end of his time at Anfield. Now, Klopp has confirmed Henderson’s revelations that he could not offer him guarantees about gametime.

Klopp said: “I didn’t read the interview at first, then read it so I can make my own opinion. Hendo said the truth. That’s how it was.

“We had talks, I told him I wanted him to stay but we talked about maybe not playing regularly.

“I cannot tell a player they can have 50 games because I don’t know that. In our relationship, I thought it was important we speak about ‘what happens if’.

“Hendo, I love him but he was not great when they didn’t play, Milner and Lucas were the same. So we talk about that now.

“So in Hendo’s ears and mind, he thought I didn’t want him there. If I said Hendo would be the main man for me he would stay but I couldn’t. That’s why it’s better he moved on.

“Not a bit of bad blood. Captain of the best Liverpool team in the Premier League era.”

Klopp was speaking ahead of Liverpool’s return to action against Wolves in the Saturday lunchtime kick-off. You can see Robbie Savage’s prediction for TEAMtalk here.

Ex-Liverpool goalkeeper explains why Dutch media are “jealous” of Virgil van Dijk
March 22, 2024
Sam Millne
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk is arguably one of the greatest defenders to ever play, but in his home country, not everyone holds him in such high regard.

Van Dijk is also skipper of the Netherlands and has 64 appearances for his nation across nearly nine years.

Having proved himself as the world’s best defender, you would think he’d be held in high esteem back home.

This isn’t necessarily the case, though, with journalists and notable ex-players, including Marco van Basten and Ruud Gullit, taking aim at the Dutchman – especially last season when he was underperforming.

The latter once even told Ziggo Sport that Van Dijk “thinks he’s better than the rest.”

Former Liverpool goalkeeper Sander Westerveld, who earned six Netherlands caps, has lamented the attitude and questioned why some have been so critical.

He told This Is Anfield: “We have a tendency in Holland like, if you saw the documentary about Beckham for example, I think in England it’s sort of similar.

“It’s like a really strange mentality and it’s also like why we don’t have legends games.

“I think the way they treat legends in England and in Spain is so much different than in Holland. In Holland, I always said the people are negative, jealous, so yeah.”

Westerveld went on to name several former players, including Mark van Bommel and Frank Rijkaard, explaining how “when they came back to Holland after a great career and played for PSV or Ajax, they’re getting criticised, being old.”

“Even Henderson now, they still criticise him after one game, like ‘uh, he’s too old’. That’s just the way people think in Holland, or especially the media,” the 49-year-old continued.

“Fortunately Van Dijk doesn’t care so he’s just playing his game. With the national team it’s different so they love him. The people love him, but the media is always criticising everybody.

“If he has one bad game then he is too old, that’s how they think in Holland. Shortsighted I think we call them.”

During Liverpool’s post-League Cup final celebrations against Chelsea, Van Dijk said to the camera: “They thought I was finished.”

Less than six months ago, pundit Johan Derksen said Van Dijk was “on his last legs” – how wrong he was.

It seems Liverpool’s defender isn’t alone in being castigated in parts of the press. It hasn’t just been the media either, who have been critical of Liverpool’s Dutch players.

After signing for the Reds at the end of the summer transfer window, Ryan Gravenberch opted to stay on Merseyside and get acquainted with his new surroundings instead of going on a short training camp with the Netherlands U21s.

This brought anger from senior manager Ronald Koeman, who said: “We are not happy with [him] refusing to play for his country.”

Best sticking to Liverpool, boys.

Liverpool star hailed for his ‘enormous quality’ after brilliant 17-minute cameo for his country

A number of Liverpool players have flown out to represent their countries.

The international break is a really annoying period for fans of domestic football, but this gives players an opportunity to show their class in their national team’s colours.

The Euros are coming up this summer, as is the Copa America, and players who will participate in those tournaments will be dreaming of winning it.

Liverpool have a decent-sized South American contingent in their squad, and a number of their players will battle it out to win the Copa America this summer.

Alexis Mac Allister’s Argentina may just be the favourites.
