Liverpool survives Luis Díaz injury scare as star left fuming at referee against Tottenham

Liverpool supporters were left with their hearts in their mouths for a few minutes on Sunday after fit-again Luis Díaz was left rolling in agony following an ugly challenge.

The Colombian winger wasn’t making his first start since October after a six-month lay-off with a knee injury, and he wasted no time treating thrilled fans to an example of his clinical finishing by turning in the Reds’ second goal of the game from a tight angle after just five minutes.

The sight of Díaz back on the pitch running at defenders has been long overdue, but a nasty incident in the first half could have brought his afternoon to a premature end, or even worse.

Díaz was left seething in agony after a late challenge from Oliver Skipp saw the Spurs midfielder plow his full boot into the front of the Liverpool star’s ankle.

But Díaz and his teammates were left fuming when Paul Tierney failed to award a free kick to the Reds and despite the gravity of the tackle, there would be no VAR intervention either.

Díaz required treatment on the pitch from medical staff and was thankfully able to continue, much to the relief of supporters at Anfield and millions more watching around the world on TV.

But the 26-year-old showed why he is held in such high regard on Merseyside, collecting the ball and nutmegging Skipp as soon as the match restarted.

Liverpool.com says: Díaz’s selection by Klopp was quickly justified by a superb early goal and bright opening 45 minutes, but a poor tackle from Skipp demonstrated just how fine the margins can be when it comes to keeping important players fit. Thankfully, Díaz was not seriously hurt and we can see plenty more of him before the season comes to a close.
