Liverpool are expected to appeal the red card shown to Curtis Jones in their 2-1 Premier League defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday afternoon.

The midfielder was dismissed in the 26th minute after his initial yellow card was overturned to a red card by referee Simon Hooper. Jones’ challenge on Yves Bissouma was seen as serious foul play by VAR and the decision was made after Hooper reviewed the footage at the pitchside monitor.

Jurgen Klopp’s misfortunes with the video assistant referee continued throughout the contest with Luis Diaz’s strike wrongly ruled out for offside. The goal was checked by VAR and disallowed, although the PGMOL later released a statement admitting the decision was incorrect.

Many have criticised VAR’s performance in north London over the weekend and Liverpool are now reportedly set to appeal Jones’ red card. However, should they fail in their appeal, the 22-year-old could have an extra game slapped onto his ban.

According to the ruling, if the appeal is deemed ‘frivolous’, Jones’ ban could be extended from three games to four meaning he would miss the games against Brighton & Hove Albion, Everton, Nottingham Forest and Luton Town.

Liverpool do not believe that Jones used excessive force with his challenge and will look to overturn the versatile midfielder’s ban with an appeal lodged to the Football Association.

Elsewhere, after PGMOL chief Howard Webb appeared on Sky Sports Monday Night football to give a behind-the-scenes look some of VAR decisions, GOAL have reported that the audio from Diaz’s disallowed goal will soon be released to the public after a formal request to hear the conversation between the officials at Stockley Park and Simon Hooper was made by Liverpool.
