IBRAHIMA KONATE RETURNS! GRAVENBERCH READY, THIAGO & TRENT STILL OUT | LIVERPOOL TRAINING REPORT
If there is one sliver of salvation from a poor season, it’s that it offers plenty of opportunity for improvement. Liverpool has made a very encouraging start to 2023/24, winning three and drawing one of its first four games, yet it only has two points more than it took from the corresponding fixtures last season.

Saturday offers an opportunity to take a stride forward on this front. There were so many poor performances from the Reds last season that you will not find uniform agreement over what was the ultimate nadir.

The 3-0 defeat at Wolves would be in the running though. Jürgen Klopp cannot afford a repeat of that result and there will be some similarities within the Liverpool starting XI from that match which do not bode well.

The Reds’ team selection is vital, particularly in defense. What won’t help is having a lunchtime kick-off immediately following the international break, something Klopp has bemoaned in the past and did so again in his pre-match press conference.

Having been an unused substitute in Brazil’s two matches, Alisson Becker will be fine to take the goalkeeper spot. In front of him is where the major questions lie.

Liverpool’s defeat at Wolves last season was the only match in the campaign for which both Ibrahima Konaté and Virgil van Dijk were unavailable. Joël Matip’s own goal that day showed the issue their twin absence can bring.

With Van Dijk suspended this weekend, Liverpool will need Konaté. Klopp confirmed on Friday that Trent Alexander-Arnold will not be available at Molineux so Joe Gomez will need to play right-back. That should be possible as the Liverpool boss also mentioned that Konaté had trained for two days, so he should be available to accompany Matip at center-back.

Aside from Thiago Alcântara, Klopp has a full complement of midfielders from which to select his central trio. This will feel like a real luxury after the lengthy absences seen in that area of the team in years past.

Liverpool supporters will be keen to see Ryan Gravenberch make his debut in red. And he might, just not from the start. Similarly, Stefan Bajčetić played 26 minutes for Spain’s U21 side last week, his first football since March. He is getting closer to a return to action for Liverpool but will likely be on the bench here too.

With the quality of performance that the Reds delivered last time out, beating Aston Villa 3-0, Klopp will be tempted to retain the same midfield trio and he likely can. Curtis Jones did not play in the break — he is no longer eligible for England U21s — while Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister last played on September 10 and 12 respectively. The latter may miss out thanks to the traveling undertaken so Wataru Endō could get the nod in holding midfield.

In attack, Mohamed Salah will play because Mohamed Salah always plays. The logical choices to accompany him would be Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota, for two reasons.

Firstly, they played less recently than Luis Díaz and Darwin Núñez, both of whom have also had to deal with journeys to and from South America. As the latter was withdrawn at half-time of Uruguay’s 2-1 loss to Ecuador with a muscle problem, he has to be considered a long shot here.

Gakpo and Jota also had more productive international windows than their attacking colleagues. The former scored twice for Netherlands, and though one was a penalty, it should give him confidence having not yet netted for Liverpool in 2023/24.

Jota, meanwhile, scored twice and assisted another goal last time out. It may only have been against the might of Luxembourg, but it will have given his self-belief a little boost too. But it is in defense where the true question marks lie. Liverpool’s hopes of success at Molineux may hinge on Klopp’s selections in his back four.

Liverpool predicted line-up vs Wolves: Alisson; Gomez, Konaté, Matip, Robertson; Szoboszlai, Mac Allister, Jones; Salah, Gakpo, Jota.
